Overview

While it might not seem too impressive at first glance, Hariyama's abilities and stat distribution make it more than meets the eye. Hariyama's massive HP stat and Thick Fat help to patch up its shallow defenses and lack of resistances, but despite this, it still cannot face off one-on-one with the powerful attackers in the tier. However, Thick Fat also lets Hariyama perform quite well against hail, and it boasts a base 120 Attack stat, the second-highest of the Fighting-types in the tier. Despite this, Gallade still poses as the superior Fighting-type in RU as it is faster, can use Swords Dance or use a Bulk Up set, and has a secondary STAB move. Nevertheless, Hariyama still holds a valuable niche as a bulky and powerful attacker.

Status Orb

Toxic Orb / Flame Orb Guts Adamant
Moveset EVs
~ Close Combat
~ Stone Edge
~ Fake Out / ThunderPunch
~ Bullet Punch
252 Atk / 172 SpD / 84 Spe

A status Orb paired with Guts raises Hariyama's Attack stat to terrifying heights without the need of a boosting move. Close Combat is the first move on this set—as well as being a STAB move—2HKOing many Pokemon, such as Tangrowth, Steelix, and Quagsire, with Stealth Rock in play. Stone Edge gains super effective damage on Fire- and Flying-type switch-ins, such as Entei, Moltres, and Sigilyph, and acts as a solid neutral move to hit many other Pokemon. Fake Out guarantees that Hariyama's status Orb activates safely. In conjunction with Bullet Punch, Hariyama's dual priority is useful for beating frail Pokemon, such as Gavantuala, Aerodactyl, and Sceptile. On the other hand, ThunderPunch deals considerable damage to Slowking and acts as Hariyama's best attack against Qwilfish, whom otherwise would wall this set with ease. Bullet Punch is handy for picking off weakened opposing Pokemon, patching up Hariyama's non-existent speed.

RestTalk

Leftovers Thick Fat Careful
Moveset EVs
~ Whirlwind
~ Force Palm
~ Rest
~ Sleep Talk
12 HP / 244 Def / 252 SpD

This set focuses more on team support and prolonging Hariyama's longevity. Whirlwind allows Hariyama to function as a reliable phazer, racking up hazard damage on the opponent. Having Whirlwind also gives Hariyama a better chance of waking up. Force Palm is a STAB move and can spread paralysis, allowing the rest of your team to outspeed certain threats. Rest keeps Hariyama healthy, allowing it to tank multiple hits from moderately powerful attackers such as Manectric. Sleep Talk prevents Hariyama from being dead weight while asleep and can bypass Whirlwind's negative priority, but does have a risk factor to it. In addition to team support and prolonging longevity, this set also takes advantage of Hariyama's good bulk. This set helps Hariyama check threats, such as Typhlosion, Lilligant, and Cryogonal, as well as Pokemon commonly used in hail like Rotom-F.

Other Options

A SubPunch set is possible for Hariyama to use, but Hariyama has difficulties maintaining a Substitute because of the powerful special attackers, such as Moltres and Sigilyph, found in RU. Hariyama has access to Bulk Up, but is not recommended, as Hariyama is too slow and has trouble finding time to pull it off. A set based around Hariyama's Dream World ability, Sheer Force, using Rock Slide, the elemental punches, or Iron Head, has merit, but is outclassed by the status Orb set. A Choice Band set is always plausible, but only hits as hard as the status Orb set without giving Hariyama the freedom to switch moves.

Checks and Counters

Strong special attackers such as Moltres and Sigilyph can take advantage of Hariyama's low base Special Defense and beat it down. Defensive Pokemon, such as Uxie, Mesprit, and Slowking, can take Hariyama's onslaughts with ease and beat Hariyama one-on-one. Bulky Psychic- and Ghost-types such as Musharna and Sprirtomb or Misdreavus are the number one checks to Hariyama, as they resist or are immune to its STAB moves, respectively. Other defensive tanks, such as Tangrowth and Qwilfish, can wall the RestTalk set, but cannot take repeated hits from the status Orb set. Faster Pokemon, such as Swellow, Braviary, and Scyther, can come in and revenge kill Hariyama with powerful STAB Flying-type moves but have to watch out for priority attacks.
