Overview
The ancient golem stirs, fortifying his defenses, and is ready to face the onslaught from those in the NU tier that would dare defy him. Sadly, Regirock's long hibernation has taken a toll on his once-legendary defenses—he is OHKOed by Pokemon such as Exeggutor and Gorebyss, and can barely scratch the hides of Lickilicky and Camerupt without Toxic. Taking a quick glance over the base stats of the King of Rocks, one immediately notices his colossal Defense and good HP, as well as decent Special Defense and Attack, which allow him to act as an efficient tank. Possessing the best physical bulk in the game, Regirock can be a nightmare to take down for any team lacking strong special attackers with super effective STAB moves. He also has access to some excellent support moves, such as Stealth Rock and Thunder Wave. In addition, his pure Rock typing allows him to be one of the best Swellow checks in NU. Unfortunately, Regirock's pure Rock typing also burdens him with weaknesses to very common attacking types, including Fighting-, Water-, and Ground-type attacks. He lacks reliable recovery outside of Rest, meaning he can often be setup fodder while asleep. Nevertheless, Regirock is still a prominent Pokemon in the NU metagame.
While Regirock's stats might scream "defensive wall providing support," this set lets Regirock take advantage of his good Attack stat and his solid support movepool himself. Stealth Rock is a necessity, as Regirock can almost always find an opportunity to set it up with his excellent bulk. Drain Punch is a vital part of this set; it allows Regirock to heal damage taken, and works great with Regirock's impressive bulk. Drain Punch works even better with Thunder Wave, as this allows Regirock to move first and heal before the opponent can land a blow, which might otherwise end Regirock. Stone Edge is the mandatory STAB move of choice, while Earthquake hits Fighting- and Steel-types harder than Regirock's other moves and prevents Regirock from being a free switch-in for Golurk. Ice Punch nails opposing Torterra on the switch-in and hits Golurk harder than anything else, but otherwise isn't as useful as Earthquake.
Team Options & Additional Comments >>>
Regirock is pretty easy to wear down, but Leftovers helps mitigate that. It's easier to wear down Regirock when it doesn't have Leftovers, but Rocky Helmet allows Regirock to pivot into powerful attacks it resists and weaken said Pokemon that hits it. It is especially useful for the powerful Normal-type Pokemon in the tier as all of the offensive ones, besides Tauros and certain Kangaskhan sets, lose a lot of health fast. Rock Slide is a more reliable option for a STAB move, but the power drop is noticeable. Rock Slide paired with Thunder Wave can create the infamous paraflinch combination, which can save Regirock in tough situations but makes it much more susceptible to Golurk. Regirock pairs well with Audino, which can provide cleric support. Leafeon is another great option, as it can deal with both Ground- and Water-types that might threaten Regirock. As Regirock might have trouble healing sometimes, Audino's and Leafeon's Wishes can easily restore Regirock's health, enabling him to continue to put offensive pressure on the opponent. Heal Bell support from the two is also great for Regirock as status will hinder him. Try using a Psychic-type, such as Exeggutor, if you're using Audino, as they can take incoming Fighting-type attacks that hit both Regirock and Audino for super effective damage. Exeggutor can also handle Water- and Ground-types for Regirock thanks to its Grass typing. A Ghost-type Pokemon such as Misdreavus works great as well, as it is immune to Fighting-type attacks. Entry hazard support is great if Regirock lacks Stealth Rock, as it can help Regirock secure some needed KOs. Armaldo can provide Stealth Rock and Rapid Spin support, keeping the field clean, while handling Grass-types fairly well for Regirock. Whirlipede and Garbodor have access to both Spikes and Toxic Spikes, and threaten most Grass-types as well.
This set aims to provide as much support to the team as possible with Regirock's excellent movepool, while checking a large amount of dangerous threats such as Swellow and physical Eelektross. Due to Regirock's fantastic Defense, many physical threats struggle to get past him, making him a good switch-in for most physical attackers in NU. Stealth Rock provides a great way to spread residual damage across the opponent's team, especially with the numerous Pokemon in NU that are weak to Stealth Rock. Regirock is a reliable and bulky user of Stealth Rock, and will get it up more often than not. Stone Edge and Earthquake are attacking moves in order to prevent Regirock from being Taunt bait, and together create the famous EdgeQuake combination, hitting nearly everything in NU for neutral damage, only missing out on Torterra and the rare Eviolite Baltoy, and packing solid power off Regirock's decent Attack. Thunder Wave can cripple fast, offensive Pokemon, such as Gorebyss and Sawk, both of whom love to switch in, whereas Toxic will break the walls that switch into Regirock, such as Lickilicky or Tangela; in either case, the last move is used for stopping Pokemon that cause problems for your team. The EV spread allows him to take neutral special hits fairly well, as without investment he is OHKOed or 2HKOed by many more special hits. Despite being uninvested in, his Defense is still titanic, taking physical hits better than even 252 / 252+ Deoxys-D.
Team Options & Additional Comments >>>
Rock Slide is slashed with Stone Edge for those who prefer the better accuracy of the former, but it is much weaker, and thus is not advised. Rocky Helmet can be used over Leftovers; however it is not advised on this set because Regirock needs all of the HP it can get considering how easy it is to wear down. Rest can be used in any of the slots if you already have Stealth Rock somewhere else, or just want to give Regirock more longevity, but it must be used with cleric support. Luckily, many clerics, such as Misdreavus and Meganium, share good synergy with him, as both have great Special Defense to complement Regirock's fantastic physical bulk. Lickilicky is also a good option thanks to having both Heal Bell and Wish if Regirock is not running Rest, but make sure you bring something to take Fighting-type attacks. Exeggutor is a great partner, resisting all of Regirock's weaknesses while Regirock handles the Fire- and Flying-types who trouble the multi-headed tree. Exeggutor especially appreciates Swellow being taken down. Different EV spreads can be run, such as 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD for a monster that doesn't die to physical hits, but he now dies to many more special hits, as previously stated.
With its impressive defensive stats, Regirock becomes an excellent sun supporter, being able to easily set up Sunny Day. Stealth Rock further bolsters Regirock's supporting prowess, and it can help Regirock's teammates score some needed KOs or punish the opponent for switching. Stone Edge prevents Regirock from becoming total Taunt bait, while it hits quite hard off Regirock's base 100 Attack stat. The last move comes down to your own preference. Fire Punch is a great move for Regirock, allowing it to hit opposing Grass-types for a surprise, as well as take advantage of the power boost provided by the sun. For example, Regirock can 2HKO Exeggutor with Fire Punch in the sun, while Choice Specs Exeggutor might fail to 2HKO Regirock with Psychic, and fails to OHKO it with -2 Leaf Storm. Explosion, however, can be used to safely bring in a teammate by blowing Regirock up. Be careful when using Explosion though; take the situation at hand into consideration and only explode Regirock when it isn't needed anymore.

The sun also aids Regirock; not only does it boost the power of Fire Punch, but the sun also allows Regirock to tank powerful Water-type moves. +2 Gorebyss fails to OHKO Regirock in the sun, and after some combination of prior damage, Defense drops, and entry hazards, Regirock can possibly OHKO Gorebyss back. Gorebyss has a hard time defeating this Regirock, and will more often than not lose, especially if Spikes and Stealth Rock are on the field. There are a few other options that can go in the last slot. Thunder Wave and Toxic can be used to add to the support Regirock provides. Thunder Wave cripples faster opponents and Choice Scarf users, while Toxic wears down bulky opponents that won't go down in one hit. As for alternative offensive options, Earthquake and Drain Punch can be useful. Earthquake hits certain Steel-types, such as Probopass and Lairon, harder than Fire Punch does, while Drain Punch can be used to heal any damage Regirock might have suffered. In particular, Drain Punch works well against frail, Fighting-weak Pokemon, such as Zangoose.
Chlorophyll users are obviously the most important teammates to this set. The Chlorophyll users that fare best in the tier are Exeggutor, Victreebel, and Shiftry, and all three have attributes that Regirock benefits from. Exeggutor and Victreebel both resist Fighting-type moves that Regirock is weak to. Exeggutor receives a special mention, as it has both better bulk and super effective STAB Psychic-type moves to get rid of those pesky Fighting-types. Shiftry, on the other hand, can hit Ghost-types hard, which can be useful to some extent if Regirock carries Explosion; Ghost-types block Explosion, meaning Regirock will be sacrificed without benefit. Unlike other sun supporters, most of whom are partially Grass-typed, Regirock can also take care of Flying- and Fire-types that threaten these Grass-types with ease, as it resists their STAB moves. Hard-hitting Fire-types, such as Charizard and Camerupt (and to some extent Rapidash and Simisear), can take advantage of the power boost their STAB moves get from the sun, while also being able to take care of Metang for Regirock if it lacks Fire Punch or Earthquake; Metang resists both Stone Edge and Explosion.
While Regirock provides support for its teammates, it still needs its own support. Cleric support is fantastic, as Regirock can't heal itself or cure itself of status outside of Rest. While Lickilicky might seem like the most promising choice, Leafeon has a special niche as a Wish passer in the sun. With Leaf Guard, Leafeon is immune to status and can switch into status moves for free in the sun, allowing it to easily support the team. Leafeon has access to Heal Bell, Toxic, and Roar as well, while being able to handle various Water- and Ground-types, notably Seismitoad, with Leaf Blade. As Steel-types, more specifically Bastiodon, Probopass, and Lairon, will give Regirock trouble if it lacks Earthquake or Drain Punch, Fighting-types such as Sawk are helpful to dispose of them. Water-types are a big no, however, as their STAB moves are weakened by the sun.
Other Options
Regirock has a vast movepool, but not many of his moves are very useful. Swagger and Psych Up can be used as a pseudo-Swords Dance, but Regirock doesn't have the Speed to be an all-out sweeper, and Curse is generally preferred. This is also outclassed by Carracosta, not to mention very gimmicky and luck-dependent. Iron Defense is in the same boat, as Curse is preferable in nearly all situations. Regirock can also use Counter effectively, given his astronomical Defense. A Rock Polish set is also usable, but is outclassed once again by Shell Smash Carracosta, as is an all-out offensive set of four attacking moves. Seismic Toss can also be used to break nearly all the Substitutes in NU, when a STAB move is not enough. Explosion used to be a good option, but with the nerf, it has become too weak to do too much damage and is not recommended on any set besides the Sunny Day Support one. In addition, Regirock is primarily used to check threats, not to open up holes in the opponent's team.
Checks and Counters
Samurott can set-up Swords Dance on Regirock and isn't too threatened by paralysis. Gurdurr and Throh can come in and set up on Regirock or scare him out, and the worst Regirock can do is Toxic, which doesn't bother either of the aforementioned Pokemon too much. Sawk can pick off weakened Regirock below 70% with its powerful STAB Close Combat. Exeggutor and Gorebyss can come in and fire away powerful STAB attacks, or simply set up in Gorebyss's case.
Unreleased
Regirock receives Sturdy from the Dream World. While Sturdy has its merits, Clear Body's ability to prevent stat drops are often more beneficial. Due to Regirock's superb bulk, nothing that doesn't already destroy Regirock can OHKO it anyways.
