Standard UU Bulky Water and Bulky Ground in one. Quagsire takes hits well with its good defense and HP, then strikes back on anything it can get a super effective hit on. Ice Beam provides the best coverage alongside Earthquake, especially as it hits the Grass-types that plague Quagsire. However, a lot of them in UU are quite bulky (Meganium and Vileplume, for example), so you may prefer Stone Edge, as it offers more power against most Flying-types. Stone Edge is highly recommended if you wish to use Quagsire in OU battles, as it makes a fine Gyarados counter. As Quagsire's offensive "power" is rather lackluster you can use Toxic to help him wear down enemies. Some of Quagsire's common switch-ins, however, are Grass/Poison-types, so you may want to opt for Yawn, which also makes a safer choice should a Pokémon with Guts or Quick Feet switch in. Protect works nicely alongside both Toxic and Yawn. It helps with compounding poison damage from Toxic or avoids taking a hit if you just Yawned at your opponent. It is also helpful for providing a little healing from Leftovers and scouting your opponent. Surf or Waterfall can also be used in either of the last two slots. Surf is the more useful option of the two as it makes it easier to take out other Ground-types, such as Sandslash.
Quagsire survives nearly all manner of physical assaults, so he can easily grab a surprise KO with Counter. Yawn or Encore can prove very useful in the last slot. If you give away the Counter surprise too early, opponents may try to set up. Either put them to sleep or force them to repeat their setup move, letting a counter get in safely.
If you don't want to rely solely on Leftovers and Water Absorb for healing, Rest and Sleep Talk help to keep Quagsire alive, increasing his tanking ability. The problems with using Quagsire to absorb sleep is how badly he is screwed by Grass-types, who are common sleep inducers. Still, this is a good switch in on Milotic.
Curse up and attack. Yawn can help Quagsire set up, by giving him the chance to Curse against a sleeping or switching enemy. Rest and Chesto Berry heal him after a couple of Curses.
Thanks to its fantastic typing in conjunction with Water Absorb, Quagsire makes up for its lackluster base stats and can function as a solid support pokemon in Ubers. The immediate and obvious niche Quagsire fills is as a counter to most, if not all, variants of the seemingly omnipresent Kyogre. With an immunity to Electric and Water-type attacks, Quagsire only fears the paltry power of a non-STAB Ice Beam. Specs variants can only offer a 3HKO, even with Stealth Rock on the field. Meanwhile, an unboosted Ice Beam will only threaten a 5HKO. Similarly this can also serve as a decent check against Palkia and Manaphy (lacking Grass Knot). Encore prevents several Ubers who would otherwise laugh at Quagsire's pitiful attacking power, such as Tail Glow Manaphy and Bulk Up Dialga; two set-up sweepers who couldn't care less about status effects. Toxic is a superb option against other walls such as Lugia, Groudon and Latias, while Yawn can help in forcing switches. The choice between Ice Punch and Brick Break depends more on utility, rather than sheer stopping power. Ice Punch is a good check (and a 2HKO) against Garchomp and Rayquaza, while Brick Break can shatter Reflect and Light Screen. It should be noted that Quagsire should not be handled as a wall or tank; instead its immunities should be used to force switches or force opponents into selecting particular moves. For example, Kyogre will be forced into Ice Beam in order to actually dent Quagsire, allowing you to bring in bulky Tyranitar or Metagross and wear it down with Pursuit. As almost every Uber team carries a Kyogre, Quagsire will have ample time to switch in, while Toxic and Yawn will make several Ubers think carefully before attempting to switch in. Other OptionsYou can use Body Slam as another status option, which can go in the third slot of the Bulky Water set. Waterfall can hit a few Levitating enemies harder than Ice Beam, Ice Punch or Stone Edge. Safeguard is a decent support option, which protects Quagsire's team mates from the status attacks that the inevitable Grass-types switch-ins like to throw around. Quagsire is a rather average user of Haze, so you will only get any kind of use out of it against something like Suicune. EVsYou'll want lots of HP and Defense so Quagsire can take physical hits, which is his main role. Some Attack and Special Defense is often helpful too, especially on the Curse set. Opinion"The UU Swampert" comes back for another round, albeit with unique competition from Gastrodon, who sports Recover. Still, Quagsire's Water Absorb and more effectively placed stats still make it perfectly useful. CountersLike Swampert, Quagsire tends to dislike anything it can't hit for super effective damage. Also like Swampert, Quagsire really hates Grass attacks. As such, Meganium and Vileplume make excellent counters. Most other Grass-types can take him, since his Ice attacks lack the power to KO the majority of them. Mantine will shrug off everything except Stone Edge, and almost always carries Toxic itself, which is an issue for any Quagsire set that lacks Rest. |
