The second quarter of 2009 sees, as usual, the updating of the tier lists. However, this quarter sees a major difference: the first official DP UU List!

First of all, the OU List. It is almost exactly the same as its predecessor, except for two Pokemon:
  • Smeargle is now OU
  • Yanmega is now UU
This means that, from now on, Smeargle is banned from UU but Yanmega is allowed in UU (unless it becomes a Suspect, which is something that isn't at my discretion).

The OU list is thus:

Code:

Now, behold the very first official Smogon UU list:

Thanks again X-Act! Huh, maybe Porygon 2 will be heading up to OU (eeked out 1 rank above Yanmega this last month), even though it kind of sucks in UU compared to how it does in OU.

Well, can't say this is incredibly surprising, Smeargle is one of the most versatile Pokemon in the game and Yanmega has been on the decline since Platinum. Will have to check out the UU list at some point.

cool! yanmega is a pretty good pokeyman. it'll be fun tearing shit up in uu

also, question. if a poke isnt on either list, what does that mean? for example: hitmonchan, regice

If a Pokemon isn't on either list, it's NU. So yes, Regice is NU. To be fair though, Chansey is the better special wall in UU, and Blissey is the better special wall in OU. Happiny, is most certainly not a good special wall though, so Regice needn't worry in NU. :)

So yes, you can start playing NU now, although there isn't a ladder, so I don't see much point. It certainly looks like an interesting tier though.

Oh, and Rhydon was THAT close to being UU!

So... if a pokémon did not make it on either list (besides the Ubers), are they NU or BL? Or, a better question, is it possible the missing ones are BL?

I am curious as to the position of Gastrodon.

About the (supposedly) NU list, there areally are a lot of good guys to play with. Articuno, Dodrio, Drifblim, Entei, Floatzel, Lapras, Leafeon, Lickilicky, Marowak, Medicham, Pinsir, Regice, Tangrowth, Tauros and Walrein will all be very fun to use (so far these are what hit me the most)

Gastrodon is NU. There currently are no BL pokemon, though we have 6 up for BL nomination.

edit: Looking at the list (thanks Zarator), there are a LOT of pokemon who were "formerly BL" who are now in NU (Ramparados, Entei, Pinser, etc. etc.), while most of the good "formerly UU" pokes are still UU (Clefable, Steelix, [Scyther!? really??]).

That just serves to make me think even more that "old UU" was really screwed up. xD

Ah, I see, I see... So, we are currently working on the first official BL list or, dare I say, tier? It is unusual to see pokémon such as Medicham, Pinsir, and Tauros NU.

Pretty much what my thoughts were. Apparently, we didn't understand at the beginning how deep was the difference between Adv and DP in the UU balance.
However, I think this will improve NU too. Adv NU was - forgive me if i offend in any way your feelings^^ - a "game of losers" (the losers being the Pokémon, not the players ofc). Really, they coolness value may be a lot, but I hate when I have to resort to Chimecho for walling and to Castform for sweeping.

Rhydon shouldn't be promoted to UU. Its usage was a few points outside the UU cutoff though.

Surprised by Medicham, honestly. Judging by the February and January stats alone, it would have been solidly UU. However, its use declined so much in March that it didn't even make it to UU.

Also Porygon2 was exactly the last Pokemon that made the cut-off point in UU... and was also the exact first Pokemon that didn't make the cut-off point in OU!

yeah p2 is a pretty common sight these days, being a pretty reliable counter to the oversaturated gyarados in ou, and can work as a mence counter in a pinch as well.

and i am surprised by inclusion of electivire, barely see his ugly mug ever
same with donphan

Can somebody explain me why marowak, venomoth, pinsir, medicham and tauros are NU?
Yanmega UU?
It just makes no sense

It makes perfect sense to me! Those Pokemon didn't get enough usage to be OU, so they were put in UU. Then, they didn't get enough usage to be in the 'OU of UU', so they were NU.

And if, say, Tangrowth, or Regice, or Rhydon, or whataver, doesn't get enough usage to be in the 'OU of NU', then they'll be in the usage tier below it.

It may seem weird that something like Regice is in a tier that we previously associated with Pokemon like Delibird, but we've got to get over those associations. The tiers used to be a lot of educated guesswork, which was very flawed, they are now, however, calculated through the use of statistical manipulation of data, which is somewhat less flawed.

If people are seriously that troubled, we can just call the new tier 'UU2', or 'RU' or something, but it makes no difference whatsoever to the competitive battling.

And, there's no need for people to worry about Pokemon like Medicham being in the tier. Remember, they can still be banned if needs be, and you can always popularize the Pokemon in UU if you're that desperate for it to go.

God damn it Donphan!

Thanks a bundle X-Act. Gonna go bang my head on a wall a few times.

Also, pretty cool to see Smeargle make OU (again?). It's really not a bad pokemon.

I for one would like to see the run-off tier from whatever didn't get the UU cut to get a better name than NU, what with historical associations...RU would probably be the best.

140 pokemon...and a lot of cool ones, too, like my favorite, Medicham.

I agree. I mean, I can see the logic behind the process, but I don't think a pokémon like Yanmega should be made UU without a previous test. Nobody uses normal Deoxys in Ubers, should it go to OU?

What if everybody stopped using Scizor? Would it be UU until voted otherwise?

If something like Froslass is currently a Suspect, I don't understand how Yanmega is being allowed.

You are not understanding how things work. First of all, Ubers is not a tier, it is a ban list. Secondly, OU is not doing suspect tests the way UU is doing them, so again, that points is moot. Thirdly, because of the current way we are testing UU, yes if everyone stopped using Scizor, it would be UU until proven it breaks the teir.
