Here are the average movesets, EVs and Natures used for each Pokemon in July 2009 in the four main ladders in Smogon University server.

A reminder of the format used:

Code:
1. SCIZOR (Usages: 235860)

Average EVs: 144 HP, 240 Atk, 8 Def, 24 SpD, 92 Spe
Average Nature Boosts/Reductions: +9.3% Atk, -9.3% SpA

Typical moveset:
- Bullet Punch
- Superpower
- U-turn
- Pursuit

* Swords Dance can replace any of the four moves listed.
The average EVs are first listed. Note that this provides an average indication of how the EVs were distributed. However, if, say, there were many users maxing out HP EVs and an equal number of users not providing any HP EVs on the same Pokemon, the average HP EVs would be near 128, which isn't very indicative of how the HP EVs were provided. In that case, just look at Doug's stats to be sure.

Next is the average nature boosts/reductions. Note that this may suffer from the same point above. If, say, players make a particular Pokemon Modest and an equal number of players make the same Pokemon Adamant, the average nature boosts/reductions would be 0% in all stats.

The typical moveset provides a moveset that is guaranteed to have been used by at least one player. Most of the time, this is not done by four moves, however, and hence the fifth, sixth, etc. moves are listed afterwards (in order of actual usage). In the example listed above, Scizor's typical moveset consists of four moves out of Bullet Punch, Superpower, U-turn, Pursuit and Swords Dance, where the moves are in increasing order of usage.

I'm also providing the most often-used moves in all servers. The probabilities listed below are the odds of that particular move being among the four moves of a Pokemon.

For this month, I'm also giving a graphical representation of the move percentages of the top 50 used moves for each ladder.

I hope you find these stats useful. I might also post the May and June moveset stats, which I missed, if I get enough requests for them.

I'm not going to post the teammates information anymore, and I'm thinking of a way to make the metagame snapshots more interesting and intuitive, since most people either don't care about them or don't get what they're supposed to convey - which is sad, because they're practically the most important information out of all I post.

great work x-act!

it seems that thunder is the king of ubers mainly because of kyorge

edit:first post hooray!

Great stuff! Very interesting indeed.

I'm pretty surprised that DD is on the top 4 moves used on T-tar.

Ape is living in the past imo. I prefer the physical based mixed set.

Great job X-Act, my head would hurt compiling all this crap.

Only one person used Wooper? O.o Where is the love?

Thanks a lot for this, X-Act. This will help me with team-building, and improve my prediction game. This is some good stuff, you truly are genius.

1. ROSERADE (Usages: 18980)

Average EVs: 80 HP, 184 SpA, 44 SpD, 200 Spe
Average Nature Boosts/Reductions: -10.0% Atk, +1.9% SpA, +1.9% SpD, +6.2% Spe

Typical moveset:
- Sludge Bomb
- Sleep Powder
- Leaf Storm
- Spikes

* Energy Ball, Synthesis, Rest, Toxic Spikes and Hidden Power Fire can replace any of the four moves listed.
Interesting. So despite the fact that they are illegal together, Roserade typically has both.

Also...

-Leech Seed>Rock Polish on Torterra? What madness is this?
-I thought I was seeing more Overheat Blazikens. Good to see that was true.
-Swellow does not use Protect. Good. But who used -Def Swellow?
-Sceptile's quite versatile, apparently. And his "typical moveset" is unbelievably awful.
-Aerial Ace is typical on Dugtrio, but Night Slash and Shadow Claw aren't. Huh.

What amazes me every time is just how common Earthquake is. It's almost double that of the next most popular move in standard, and more than double on Suspect.

Substitute is so much more common in UU... probably because of the slower paced games there compared to OU.

This is a handy resource X-Act and thanks for posting them for the community to look through.

Anyways, I'm surprised that Stealth Rock was not more common on Metagross. I hardly see it outside of the lead position, and all lead Metagross carry Stealth Rock (or should).

Great work x-act, kinda surprised that hp-fire is underneath hp-ice in standard.

Interesting. So despite the fact that they are illegal together, Roserade typically has both.
The program that creates these typical movesets doesn't take illegal combinations into account. Also, the typical moveset is not just the four moves listed, but it's 4 moves out of the four moves listed plus any other moves listed afterwards. So, for your Roserade example, the typical moveset is any four moves out of Sludge Bomb, Sleep Powder, Leaf Storm, Spikes, Energy Ball, Synthesis, Rest, Toxic Spikes and Hidden Power Fire. The only reason why Sludge Bomb, Sleep Powder, Leaf Storm and Spikes appear as the first four is that they're the four most used moves out of all moves that Roserade learns.

And for Sceptile, the typical moveset is any four moves out of Substitute, Leaf Storm, Leaf Blade, Leech Seed, Dragon Pulse, Hidden Power Fire, Focus Blast, Swords Dance, Grass Knot, Dragon Claw and Earthquake.

As for Dugtrio:
Code:
| Dugtrio | Move | Earthquake | 99.9 |
| Dugtrio | Move | Stone Edge | 91.7 |
| Dugtrio | Move | Sucker Punch | 66.2 |
| Dugtrio | Move | Aerial Ace | 47.3 |
| Dugtrio | Move | Night Slash | 40.4 |
| Dugtrio | Move | Pursuit | 16.1 |
| Dugtrio | Move | Substitute | 14.7 |
| Dugtrio | Move | Stealth Rock | 8.4 |
| Dugtrio | Move | Shadow Claw | 7.1 |
| Dugtrio | Move | Other (2) | < 3.3 |
Of course, if you have any algorithm handy in which I can prevent illegal combinations from appearing in typical movesets, as well as maybe present typical movesets to appear less 'unbelievably awful', I'm all ears.

As a battler, this is very helpful.

But as an update writer, I'm a bit saddened by your decision to forgo Teammate information. It made it a lot more convenient to write the Team Options section. However, beggars can't be choosers, and I'm glad that you chose to put this up anyways. I hope that your new ideas of metagame snapshots will be interesting.

For the natures part of the data, what do you mean by +4 % attack?
This means that if you take all the usages of that Pokemon into account, the attack stat would be boosted by 4%.

For example, suppose a Pokemon was used 1000 times. 400 of these usages were Adamant and 600 were Jolly. In this case, 400 would have the attack boosted by 10% and the special attack hindered by 10%, and the remaining ones would have their speed boosted by 10% and their special attack hindered by 10%. In total we would have 400/1000 boost attack by 10%, 600/1000 boost speed by 10% and 1000/1000 hinder special attack by 10%. So the average boosts would be: Attack +4%, Special Attack -10%, Speed +6%.

Hope that was a bit clearer.

now how does that make much sense? sure earthquake is the most popular attack, and by a decent margin, but you can still take the next three attacks and they're all SE against flying types. Go down two more spots (after passing a neutral Surf and basically a KO on anything not Skarmory Explosion) and you'll find another SE attack against flyers in ice beam.

if anything i'd avoid using flying types and try to get levitating pokemon.

Haven't played in a while, but this is gonna help me catch up :).

Seems DD t-tar is common nowadays.

Of course they are accounting for EQ being on multiple pokemon in your party

for example a team can have at least 2 users of Earthquake, but typically teams only have 1 user of Stealth Rock

I've just calculated that if a move has 10.91% of usage or higher, then it appears in at least one Pokemon in at least half of the teams that you'll face.

For Standard, the moves that qualify for this definition are Earthquake, Thunderbolt and Stealth Rock.

For UU, the moves are Earthquake, Stealth Rock and Substitute.

For Uber, the moves are Thunder, Ice Beam, Earthquake, Surf, Stealth Rock and Outrage.

For Suspect, the moves are Earthquake, Surf, Thunderbolt, Stealth Rock and Substitute.

Earthquake and Stealth Rock are the only two moves that qualify for this definition in all metagames.

why is fake tears used so less?its useful vs vaporeon and jolteon. forcing switches, it almosts acts like a nasty plot.
