Hey guys. I saw that one fellow’s Dragon thread, and while Bug type ‘mons might not be quite as important metagame-wise, I still wanted to make a topic to discuss what we might be getting from my favorite type in Gen 5.
The new pokemon:
Hahakurimo
75/103/80/70/70/92
Swarm/Chlorophyll
Lv1: False Swipe, Lv1: Tackle, Lv1: String Shot, Lv1: Bug Bite, Lv1: Razor Leaf, Lv8: Bug Bite, Lv15: Razor Leaf, Lv22: [M522], Lv29: Slash, Lv32: Helping Hand, Lv36: Leaf Blade, Lv39: X-Scissor, Lv43: [M494], Lv46: Swords Dance, Lv50: Leaf Storm
Looks like Kricketune, with better stats. I like how it gets both STAB Leaf storm and SD’d X-scissor, but it’s still nothing special. Maybe a contender for UU or NU?
Pendora
60/90/89/55/69/112
Poison Point/Swarm/(Quick Feet)
Lv1: Megahorn, Lv1: Defense Curl, Lv1: Rollout, Lv1: Poison Sting, Lv1: Screech, Lv5: Poison Sting, Lv8: Screech, Lv12: Pursuit, Lv15: Protect, Lv19: Poison Tail, Lv23: Bug Bite, Lv28: [M474], Lv30: Baton Pass, Lv33: Agility, Lv39: [M537], Lv44: Toxic, Lv50: Rock Climb, Lv55: Double-Edge
What a cool design! Too bad it has such crappy stats, lol. 60/89/69 defenses assure it probably isn’t going to be doing much with Poison Point, and 90/112 attack/speed means it isn’t hurting much at all. It does get Baton Pass there, so maybe it’ll be Agility or SD passing in NU.
Iwaparesu
70/95/125/65/75/45
Sturdy/Shell Armor
Lv1: [M504], Lv1: Rock Blast, Lv1: Withdraw, Lv1: Sand-Attack, Lv5: Rock Blast, Lv7: Withdraw, Lv11: Sand-Attack, Lv13: Faint Attack, Lv17: [M479], Lv19: Rock Polish, Lv23: Bug Bite, Lv24: Stealth Rock, Lv29: Rock Slide, Lv31: Slash, Lv38: X-Scissor, Lv43: [M504], Lv50: Flail, Lv55: Rock Wrecker
This might be the first usable guy. His stats seem a little low for OU though, so I see this guy as a big player in UU as it is one of the only pokemon that can learn Stealth Rock in all of Gen 5.
Shubarugo
70/135/105/60/105/20
Swarm/Shell Armor
Lv1: Peck, Lv1: Leer, Lv1: [M501], Lv1: Twineedle, Lv4: Leer, Lv8: [M501], Lv13: Twineedle, Lv16: Fury Attack, Lv20: Headbutt, Lv25: False Swipe, Lv28: Bug Buzz, Lv32: Slash, Lv37: Iron Head, Lv40: Iron Defense, Lv44: X-Scissor, Lv49: Reversal, Lv52: Swords Dance, Lv56: Giga Impact
I’m sure you all know them by heart, but just for comparison Scizor’s stats are 70/130/100/55/80/65. So it’s basically a much slower, slightly more defensive version. Maybe it’ll find a niche somewhere?
Denchura
70/77/60/97/60/108
Compound Eyes/Anxiety/(Swarm)
Lv1: String Shot, Lv1: Leech Life, Lv1: Spider Web, Lv1: Thunder Wave, Lv4: Thunder Wave, Lv7: Screech, Lv12: Fury Cutter, Lv15: [M527], Lv18: Bug Bite, Lv23: Gastro Acid, Lv26: Slash, Lv29: [M486], Lv34: Signal Beam, Lv40: Agility, Lv46: Sucker Punch, Lv54: Discharge, Lv60: Bug Buzz
Here’s one everyone was excited about. And look, it got Bug Buzz after all! I can imagine some really great low OU/high UU sets coming out of this guy. 97 Sp. Atk isn’t great, but Choice Specs Thunders (thanks to compound eyes) have to leave a dent in something. Maybe it’ll get that Electric U-turn move as well?
Agirudaa
80/70/40/100/60/145
Hydration/Sticky Hold/(Unburden)
Lv1: Leech Life, Lv1: [M491], Lv1: Double Team, Lv1: Quick Attack, Lv4: [M491], Lv8: Double Team, Lv13: Quick Attack, Lv16: [M522], Lv20: Mega Drain, Lv25: Swift, Lv28: Me First, Lv32: Agility, Lv37: Giga Drain, Lv40: U-turn, Lv44: Bug Buzz, Lv49: Recover, Lv52: Power Swap, Lv56: [M515]
Oh man, that base speed is something else. I can see this guy being a great scout, especially on Rain Dance teams because it’ll be immune to Paralysis. A bit concerned with that Defense though... Priority moves are going to HURT.
Aianto
58/109/112/48/48/109
Swarm/Hustle
Lv1: Vicegrip, Lv1: Sand-Attack, Lv6: Fury Cutter, Lv11: Bite, Lv16: Agility, Lv21: Metal Claw, Lv26: Bug Bite, Lv31: Crunch, Lv36: Iron Head, Lv41: Dig, Lv46: [M494], Lv51: X-Scissor, Lv56: Iron Defense, Lv61: Guillotine, Lv66: Metal Sound
This guy seems kinda “wait and see” to me. Hustle lowers accuracy, but boosts his already decent Attack. I bet this guy gets Earthquake as well, because he already learns Dig.
Urugamosu
85/60/65/135/105/100
Flame Body/(Swarm)
Lv1: Ember, Lv1: String Shot, Lv1: Leech Life, Lv1: Gust, Lv10: Leech Life, Lv20: Gust, Lv30: Fire Spin, Lv40: Whirlwind, Lv50: Silver Wind, Lv59: [M483], Lv60: Heat Wave, Lv70: Bug Buzz, Lv80: [M476], Lv90: [M542], Lv100: [M552]
Here’s the one I’m most interested in. Since I can freely spin away Stealth Rock now, I think this guy might just have a chance. He might not have the same qualities as the chandelier (60/55/90/145/90/80), but he is decently fast and pretty bulky too! In addition, that move he learns at level 100? [M552]: Special Fire PP: 10 Power: 80 / Accuracy: 100 Effect: May increase user's Special Attack by 1 stage. Cool.
Insekuta

Lv1: [M546], Lv1: Quick Attack, Lv1: Magnet Rise, Lv1: Metal Claw, Lv1: Screech, Lv7: Fury Cutter, Lv11: Lock-On, Lv18: [M488], Lv22: Magnet Bomb, Lv29: Slash, Lv33: Metal Sound, Lv40: Signal Beam, Lv44: Tri Attack, Lv51: X-Scissor, Lv55: Bug Buzz, Lv62: [M493], Lv66: Zap Cannon, Lv73: Hyper Beam, Lv77: SelfDestruct
This will probably go to Ubers, but darn is it COOL. I bet a mixed/wall breaker set with Bug Buzz and SelfDestruct would be nice.

New Bug Moves:
[M476]: Other Bug PP: 20 Power: --- / Accuracy: --- Effect: Whenever an opposing PokÈmon uses an attack with a target of "single non-user" or "single opposing PokÈmon" this round and there is a Pokemon at the position of this attack's user, it is directed to the Pokemon at the position of this attack's user instead of to any other non-user of that attack. Remains effective even if user is replaced. Priority level 3.
[M483]: Other Bug PP: 20 Power: --- / Accuracy: --- Effect: [E122]
[M522]: Special Bug PP: 20 Power: 30 / Accuracy: 100 Effect: May decrease opponent's Special Attack by 1 stage.
[M537]: Physical Bug PP: 20 Power: 65 / Accuracy: 100 Effect: May cause opponent to flinch. Power is doubled if Minimize is in effect for opponent.
Uh, yeah, these seem pretty useless. I do wonder what 483 does though… Anyone know where I can see what the effects do (like [E122])?
Anyways, I hope this doesn't seem like too much just for Bug types, but I thought we could discuss possible competitive roles the new guys might have in the metagame. How do you think Bug will do Offensively vs. Defensively in Gen 5?
