Celebi (Offensive & Defensive Nasty Plot)

[Set]
name: Offensive Nasty Plot
move 1: Nasty Plot
move 2: Psychic
move 3: Grass Knot / Recover
move 4: Earth Power / Hidden Power Fire
item: Life Orb / Occa Berry
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
nature: Timid

[SET COMMENTS]

<p>Celebi is capable of being a very formidable sweeper when running a Nasty Plot set, able to lure many of its common switch-ins and retaliate with gusto. Nasty Plot is the crux of the set, doubling Celebi's already respectable Special Attack stat. Psychic is Celebi's main STAB attack, dealing big damage to any Pokemon who does not resist it. Grass Knot, Celebi's other STAB option, is excellent for hitting bulky Water-types for a greater amount of damage. Alternatively, Recover can be used to increase Celebi's longevity. The fourth moveslot is entirely up to personal preference and the team's needs. Earth Power scores a OHKO on Heatran, while Hidden Power Fire OHKOes Scizor, Forretress, and Skarmory after Stealth Rock damage. It is important to note that Hidden Power Fire variants are helpless against Heatran, while Earth Power only musters a 3HKO on standard 248/0 Scizor.</p>

<p>The EV spread is a straightforward, generic one that you'd likely find on any other special sweeper. 252 Special Attack EVs allow Celebi to maximize damage output, while 252 Speed EVs with a Timid nature enable Celebi to outpace Jolly Lucario and Gliscor and Speed tie with other base 100s (at worst). Life Orb is the preferred option in order to achieve certain KOs as well as dealing as much damage as possible, but Occa Berry is also a viable option as it allows you to beat Infernape who lack U-turn and Heatran 100% of the time.</p>

[Additional Comments]

<p>To demonstrate the sheer power of this set, here are some damage calculations:</p>

<h3>Damage Calculations</h3>
<ul class="damage_calculations">
<li>+2 Grass Knot vs 252/0 Vaporeon 95.7% - 112.9%</li>
<li>+2 Psychic vs. 252/0 Rotom-A 98.7% - 116.4%</li>
<li>+2 Psychic vs 252/0 Zapdos 90.6% - 107% (Guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock)</li>
<li> Grass Knot vs 4/0 Tyranitar 123.4% - 146.2%</li>
<li>+2 HP Fire v. 0/4 Def Celebi / Shaymin 96.5% - 114%</li>
<li>+2 HP Fire v. 252/252 Careful Skarmory 89.2% - 105.4%</li>
<li>+2 Psychic 0/0 Dragonite 109.9% - 129.4%</li>
</ul>

<p>Nasty Plot Celebi has quite a few Pokemon who are capable of stopping it cold. Infernape and Gengar can switch in on any move except for Psychic (and also Earth Power for Infernape) and OHKO with Fire Blast and Shadow Ball, respectively. While Occa Berry can be used to lure Infernape and KO it, a reliable check is still recommended. Bulky Water-types, such as Gyarados and Vaporeon, work well as they can safely switch into Infernape while Celebi can switch into the Electric and Grass attacks that are aimed at them. Scizor, Bronzong, and Specially Defensive Skarmory and Jirachi are good options to sponge Gengar's Shadow Balls. Ironically, these Steels also wall variants of Celebi who lack Hidden Power Fire. Having a partner who can easily handle these Steel-types, such as Heatran or Infernape, is necessary in order for Celebi to properly sweep the opponent. Heatran walls Celebi if the pixie does not have Earth Power. Again, bulky Waters are recommended to combat Heatran should you choose to not run Earth Power. They also help check Choice Scarf Flygon, who can switch in and U-turn for the KO on Celebi. In addition to bulky Waters, Skarmory and Scizor are good switch-ins to Flygon. Blissey and Snorlax are both specially defensive walls who easily take Celebi's attacks. Having Pokemon capable of breaking special walls is necessary for Celebi to function successfully. Mixed Infernape or Dragonite in particular do a great job at this. Scarfed Tyranitar can switch in on Celebi and use Crunch to OHKO. Dark resists, such as Scizor or Machamp, are recommended to combat Tyranitar as well.</p>

[Set]
name: Defensive Nasty Plot
move 1: Nasty Plot
move 2: Energy Ball / Grass Knot
move 3: Recover
move 4: Earth Power / HP Fire
item: Leftovers / Occa Berry
evs: 120 HP / 252 SpA / 136 Spe
nature: Timid

[SET COMMENTS]

<p>Unlike the Offensive Nasty Plot set, this set takes a more defensive approach to sweeping with Nasty Plot. Energy Ball is the main form of attack, threatening all Pokemon who do not resist it. Grass Knot is another viable option, but it lacks power against lighter opponents. Recover is used to abuse Celebi's natural bulk, allowing for increased longevity. The fourth moveslot is entirely up to personal preference and the team's needs. Earth Power OHKOes Heatran, while Hidden Power Fire is used to OHKO Scizor, Forretress, and Skarmory after Stealth Rock damage.</p>

<p>The EVs maximize Celebi's bulk without sacrificing power. 252 Special Attack EVs are used in order to maximize damage output, and 138 Speed EVs with a Timid nature are used in order to outpace Timid Suicune. The remaining EVs are placed into HP in order to sponge attacks as efficiently as possible. Leftovers is the preferred option in order to have constant HP recovery, but Occa Berry is also a viable option as it allows Celebi to beat Infernape who lack U-turn and Heatran 100% of the time.</p>

[Additional Comments]

<p>Defensive Nasty Plot Celebi's counters are nearly identical to those of Offensive Nasty Plot. Infernape and Gengar can come into any move and proceed to OHKO with Fire Blast and Shadow Ball, respectively. As previously mentioned, Occa Berry can be used to help Celebi lure Infernape and KO it, but a reliable check is still recommended. Bulky Water-types such as Gyarados and Vaporeon do well as they can safely switch into Infernape, while Celebi can switch into the Electric and Grass attacks that are aimed at them. For Gengar, Specially Defensive Jirachi, Scizor, Bronzong, and Specially Defensive Skarmory are all good options to sponge its Shadow Balls. Skarmory, Forretress, Bronzong, and Scizor all counter this Celebi as well if Hidden Power Fire isn't used. Having a partner who can easily handle these Steel-types, such as Heatran or Infernape, is necessary in order for Celebi to successfully pummel the opponent. Heatran walls Celebi if it is not using Earth Power. Again, a bulky Water is recommended to combat Heatran should you opt to not run Earth Power. Choice Scarf Flygon can switch in and U-turn for the KO. Skarmory and Scizor make excellent switch-ins to Flygon. Blissey and Snorlax are both specially defensive walls that are easily capable of taking Celebi's attacks. Having Pokemon capable of breaking special walls, such as Mixed Infernape, is necessary for Celebi to function as well.</p>

I believe Celebi is best baton passing NP. Azelf is better in most aspects to the offensive version, having flamethrower over earth power and higher speed and SpA. (Celebi is, however, more bulky and has STAB grass knot.)

Defensive Nasty Plot is worse than CM. Sure, you get 33% more power, but as its defensive, CM is more useful. In addition, Togekiss is a better defensive nasty plotter

GK / Psychic / EP hits everything common in OU for neutral Damage Bar Skarmory.

You can't compare azelf and celebi, they are completely different. Anyway, what do you think about a mention of recover on the offensive celebi? Celebi can get by with psychic ep recover NP. Bulky water's don't exactly enjoy a +2 psychic and none of them can fight back too hard except starmie (kinda irrelevant though as it outspeeds you) and offensive suicune (this does matter if you want to come in and revenge it). Tyranitar can be hit with earthpower and while i realise it won't OHKO it should do quite a bit. So yeah, I think recover deserves a mention here.

Otherwise looks alright.

oh i didnt think about NP baton passing, ill look into that. and comparing NP Celebi to azelf is illogical. Celebi has different defensive weakness's/resistances, has a GK STAB and is actually capable of taking hits.

as for the Defensive set, NP is actually able to pose more of an immediate threat, so its not "worse". NP has advantages over the CM set which prevents it from being outclassed. Having used CM Celebi before, i can say that while its a great set, its lack (or at least less in comparison to NP) immediate damage output had cost it a lot (being severely weakened or even being KOd).

Comparing NP Togekiss to Celebi doesnt make sense at all. Togekiss is SR weak, Celebi resists SR, Celebi typing makes it played farrr different Togekiss.

I will look into NP Baton Passing though

Offensive NP should have Recover slashed with Grass Knot on it, IMO. Psychic/Earth Power provide good enough coverage as it is, so Recover can allow Celebi to Recover off SR+LO damage and continue to destroy things. +2 Earth Power has a good chance to OHKO 4/0 Tyranitar after SR anyway (ScarfTar never OHKOs back), while after 2 SR switch-ins, it's also OHKOing Scizor.

yea im gonna slash it in.

Needs an Occa Berry Baton Pass set IMO. Also, is the nature locked for NP Celebi? I thought it was?
nop, i checked Serebii and it can be any nature thankfully. And i put up a seperate baton pass update thread for celebi so ill slash Occa there

more like occa berry slashed into every set that uses earth power
I considered Occa berry when i was posting this but i figured it might not have limited use since the only threats are scarftran and ape (+2 ep OHKO's through Shuca) and both can be taken care of by proper prediction but i see your point. The loss of LO really hurts its damage output. Im not sure if it deserves a AC mention or a slash but ill slash it in for now.

Quick Questions:

What does 110 HP EVs achieve on the Defensive Nasty Plot set, and why can't a few EVs from Special Attack be invested in Speed or any defensive stat if you're going a defensive route? Subtracting Special Attack EV's won't hurt much since you are primarily boosting your Special Attack. I would rather survive stupid things like Infernape Fire STAB.

the HP EVs ensure that Celebi survives a crunch from Tyranitar but the point is that it gets as much Bulk as possible. The whole point of Defensive Nasty Plot is to boost its high SpA to a point where CM Celebi couldn't reach. The Speed EVs that i put allow Celebi to Outpace most of the things it has to. So pretty much the point of this set is to: Maximize damage output while taking hits as well as possible. I'd like to have more HP EVs so Celebi could be Bulkier, but he doesn't really have any EVs to spare.

Hey Megan Fox, I want to suggest using enough EVs to hit over 306 Spe on the Defensive NP set for Jolly SD Lucario and Timid Roserade; I think you needs 180 Spe Evs. You could also use enough EVs to hit 295 Spe for Offensive CM Suicune and dump the rest in to HP b/c 300 Spe is unnecessary. The Offensive NP Celebi set looks fine. Good Job!

oh good point ENZO. I actually put max 300 speed as it allows Celebi to outspeed Max speed Rotom-A. This could be important due to sets such as Specs or Subsplit Rotom-A, sets that arent scarfed that dont run Max speed. But your suggestion makes since, ill put enough for Jolly Luke as the main spread and enough for Offensive Cune in AC. Thanks

Choice Scarf Flygon can switch in and
U-turn for the KO. Skarmory and Scizor make excellent switch-ins to Flygon. Blissey and Snorlax are both specially defensive walls that are easily capable of taking Celebi's attacks. Having Pokemon capable of breaking special walls, such as Mixed Infernape, is necessary for Celebi to function as well.</p>
nice job (by the way, what's up with the weird spacing?)
