Traits:

130 SpA-Exceptional Special attack, can burn everthying to cinders with a flash fire boost.

Unique typing-It has defensive great typing, neutral to stealth rock, and able to easily switch in because of it's steal typing.

Flash Fire-This makes it a bit more threatening, with +1 Fire moves, it becomes massively poweful, even things that resist it's stab moves are gonna take a lot of damage.

Potential Sets:

Set #1

@

Heatran @ Life Orb
Nature: Timid/Modest
Ability: Flash Fire
6 HP/252 SpA/252 Spe
~Nitro Charge
~Fire blast
~Earth power
~Dragon Pulse/Hidden power ice/grass

With this set, Heatran can attempt to sweep, with 130 base Spa, and LO, it becomes pretty threatening. With a +1 boost it can outspeed pretty much everything with out a choice scarf. If it nabs a Flash fire boost, than barely anything can stand up to it's fire blasts.

Set #2

@

Heatran @ Leftovers
Nature: Timid
Ability: Flash Fire
252 HP/6 SpA/252 Spe
~Substitute
~Will-O-Wisp

~Flamethrower
~Earth power/Roar

With this set, Heatran takes a more defensive approach, you can force something out, and then use substitute, and burn them. A lot of heatran's counters hate being burnt, and this set takes advantage of that.

Set #3

@

Heatran @ Life Orb
Nature: Naughty
Ability: Flash Fire
252 Atk/6 SpA/252 Spe
~Explosion
~Fire Blast

~Hidden Power Electric/Grass
~Earth Power/Will-O-Wisp

Bait Tran, destroys blissey with explosion, and the Hidden Power of your choice deals with Swampert or Gyarados, While you can also burn Tyrannitar, and the other ground types that switch in. Explosion has the potential to OHKO Blissey after Stealth rock.

Set #4

@

Heatran @ Balloon
Nature: Timid
Ability: Flash Fire
6 HP/252 SpA/252 Spe
~Stealth Rock
~Fire Blast

~Hidden Power Grass
~Protect

The 5th generation of Shuca berry tran, but even better, because it allows it to completely avoid a earthquake that would otherwise do massive damage to it. Hp grass is mainly for the ground types, particularly Swampert.

Set #5

@

Heatran @ Choice Specs
Nature: Modest/Timid
Ability: Flash Fire
6 HP/252 SpA/252 Spe
~Fire Blast/Overheat

~Hidden Power Grass
~Earth Power
~Dragon Pulse

The mighty Specstran, The most powerful Special attacker in 4th generation OU. Fire blast is the powerful STAB, Hp grass destroys the water switch ins, Earth power is for other fire types, and Dragon pulse is for all those new dragons, such as Sazando, and Ononokusu.

Set #6

@

Heatran @ Leftovers
Nature: Calm
Ability: Flash Fire
252 HP/6 Def/252 SpD or
252 HP/124 SpD/132 Spe
~Protect
~Taunt
~Roar
~Lava Plume

A pretty good stall breaker, When paired up with a wish user, Heatran can cause severe damage damage to stall teams, taunt screws up most entry hazards users, and roar can go along with your entry hazards. Protect is for more leftovers recovery, and for scouting. The alternative spread lets it out speed, taunt skarmory.

Set #7

@
or

Heatran @ Passho Berry/Heat Rock
Nature: Timid/Calm
Ability: Flash Fire
252 HP/6 Def/252 Spe or
252 HP/6 Def/252 SpD
~Sunny Day
~Fire Blast
~Earth power
~Toxic

The weather changing heatran, Can actually change the weather on rain dance teams, with a passho berry it can usually survive one water attack and change the weather back to sunny day. Toxic helps it ware down the weather changing pokemon that like to switch in it.

Set #8

@

Heatran @ Life Orb
Nature: Timid/Modest
Ability: Flash Fire
6 HP/252 SpA/252 Spe
~Nitro Charge
~Metal Sound
~Fire blast
~Dragon pulse

If this thing sets up, your in for a world of pain. It is a generally reliable set, however Metal Sound's accuracy is only 85%. Fire blast is the powerful stab move, and dragon pulse provides perfect coverage, except for other Heatran.

Set #9

@

Heatran @ Choice Scarf
Nature: Timid/Modest or Naive/Rash
Ability: Flash Fire
6 HP/252 SpA/252 Spe or X Atk/X SpA/252 Spe
~Fire Blast/Overheat
~Earth Power
~Dragon pulse

~Hidden Power Ice/Electric or Explosion

Bascially, probably the most antimetagame move set there is. But without, Explosion because of the recent change, However, I reckon you could use still use explosion with a specific amount of Atk Evs, If you wanted to get rid of specific threats.

Set #10

@

Heatran @ Leftovers
Nature: Calm
Ability: Flash Fire
252 HP/6 Def/252 SpD or 252 HP/124 SpD/132 Spe
~Torment
~Protect
~
Taunt
~Magma Storm/Fire Spin

-This set could be the next Tran-trap set, With the improvement of torment, this set could easily trap and stall blissey to death, while it can't really do anything back. With toxic spikes on the field, Stall teams are going to have a exceptionally difficult time taking Heatran down.

Set #11

@
or
(closest thing I could find to a bulb)
Heatran @ Bulb/Balloon
Nature: Modest
Ability: Flash Fire
22 HP/252 SpA/236 Spe
~Nitro Charge
~Fire blast
~Dragon Pulse
~Hidden Power Grass

Another "lure" set, With this set, you have the potential to beat many of your counters, say if you have a +1 speed boost, and scarf flygon or a swampert wants to wall you, ballon lets it dodge the earthquake, and Hp grass will OHKO most swamperts and and do massive damage to flygon.

XxbraedonxX's sets, please check his post for the descriptions.

Set #12

@
or

Heatran @ Leftovers/Wide Lens
Nature: Modest
Ability: Flame Body

~Flamethrower/Fire Blast/Magma Storm

Set #13

@
or

Heatran @ Leftovers/Wide Lens
Nature: Modest
Ability: Flame Body/Flash fire
252 HP/80 Def/176 SpD
~Torment
~Protect
~Flamethrower/Magma Storm/Lava Plume

~Substitute/Will-o-Wisp

KokoaKiwi's set:

I don't really like Heatran, but I do have to constantly keep him in mind when battling. One thing I noticed was that lead Heatran can GREATLY benefit from using balloon as a hold item. We still don't know the specifics of the item, but it seems that he's at least guaranteed to dodge one ground move. Sounds a hell of a lot more useful than shuca berry, that's for sure.

Nitro Charge is gonna be great for Heatran. Basically a Scarf Heatran after one Nitro Charge but still having a Life Orb boost and being able to change moves. That Heatran set is going to be pretty dominant.

Come in on anything that is not a threat to Heatran and then use Nitro Charge on whatever switches in, and that Pokemon will have to be prepared to be blasted by any of Heatran's powerful moves.

The fact that Explosion doesn't half the opponent's defense anymore isn't good for Heatran, because now it can't reliably take out Blissey.

Uh... what's the point of running nitro charge? bulky waters (vaporeon and suicune for example) still wall it hard. That and explosion is weak as shit now.

If we in fact get a Shadow Tag clause for Shanderaa, I think these 2 pokes will play mildly similar roles.
Shanderaa trades Heatran's defensive capabilities for raw power and one more immunity.

Now Heatran has a good item in Balloon and a good boosting move in Nitro Charge, but now in the metagame, Pokemon like Sazandora and Rotom-W can be very dangerous opponents for it, and Explosion is not the same thing as before.

Nitro Charge boosts, its mediocre speed, and it can attempt to sweep, when most of it's counters are out of the way. Expolsion for the most part, isn't worth using, unless it's on that LO mixed set, because that guarantees a OHKO on Blissey.

Nitro Charge is just a great move for Heatran, Expolosion is worth using if it has LO.
Dragon Pulse need to be used to counter Dragons.

Small nitpick but flash fire doesn't boost special attack, it boosts fire moves by 50%.

Also Fuck yeah! Heatran is still as awesome as ever and is the best offensive counter to Genosect.

Heatran doesn't seem to be any less (or more) awesome then before. Something that comes to mind is that torment blocks the move tormented entirely (or so I've heard) and that makes torment tran all the more deadly (Seismic Toss blissey without a second attack is laughed off). I can see the weather heatran becoming more viable as the game is torn by a weather based conflict but it wont compare to the auto inducers and it might take a while for people to realize with the auto inducers running rampant that if they lose their inducer and dont have a back up nonauto inducer their team will fall, that's where sunny day heatran comes in. Other then that, heatran seems like it is unchanged by the coming storm.

Oh yeah thanks. I changed that, I also added a few more sets. Heatran is a great counter to that steel/grass thing as well.

Nitro charge is exactly what heatran needs. It boosts heatran's worst stat and allows for incredible power to boot. All you have to do is eliminate blissey and vaporeon (which is tough because heatran itself is probably one of the best lures) then sweep. Flygon and rotom scarfers stop heatran unless he has two nitro charges, which is isn't too tough considering you can just finish weak stuff off with it.

Although Nitro Charge does boost Heatran's speed, I honestly don't think it will be receiving that much use in the new gen. Heatran is used primarily as a revenge killer, not a sweeper, and when you have to attack something first in order to get a speed boost, you're just risking a switch (into what may possibly be another Heatran, or Scarf Flygon, 'insert other Pokemon who wreck it here').

Nitro Charge is a good move, but I think for Heatran it's going to be best to stick to its Scarf.

I just made 2 variations of a defensivetran if anybody is interested

Heatran@Leftovers/Wide Lens
Flame Body, Modest
252 Hp, 128 Def, 128 SpD
-Torment
-Protect
-Substitute
-Flamethrower/Fire Blast/Magma Storm

Pretty straightforward. Ony use Wide Lens with Magma Storm, to bring it up to 82 acc. Trapping can actually be useful :) Flamethrower for more PP.

Heatran@Leftovers/Wide Lens
Flame Body/Flash Fire, Modest
252 Hp, 176 SpD, 80 Def
-Torment
-Protect
-Flamethrower/Magma Storm/Lava Plume
-Substitute/Will-o-Wisp

The point of this set is to burn. Use Flame Body if using Substitute, and Flash Fire if running Will-o-Wisp, as they are already burned. Lava Plume should only be considered on Sub versions of this set. Once again, Wide Lens if running Magma Storm, Leftovers otherwise.

Trapping may actually be of use in this gen, as the traps last 5-6 turns. I can see it working, gimmicky as it may be. But the only other viable trapper is Power Share Trapper Shuckle

Heatran walls shanderaa ALL DAY (unless it has HP ground) so it is officially my favorite pokemon so far .
Not to be rude but, you pick your favorite pokemon based on its competitiveness or what can it counter? °A°
On topic:
So, standard Gen IV sets, replacing Explosion with Nitro Charge, seem viable so far, right?

Imo, there's still going to be the majority of Heatran with their standard Scarf sets (which carry Explosion)
But who knows, Heatran could find a niche as a Speed-Boosting Sweeper

Explosion is still a TM, but it no longer halves the foe's Def. In other words, explosion's power now is 250 instead of 500.

Thank you XxbraedonxX for thinking up those sets!

I don't think most heatran will carry the explosion though because its only half as powerful now. Nitro charge should find it's way on most offensive sets

Oh alright thanks guys.

Agreeing that its (Explosion) use will go down...
But still not sold on Nitro Charge > .<
