Qwilfish

[Overview]

<p>While Qwilfish is definitely not the first thing that comes to a person's mind when they select a Pokemon for their rain team, it has numerous niches that allow it to perform well in the Uber tier. With its ability Swift Swim, Qwilfish reaches an incredible Speed stat of 538, allowing it to outrun many Scarf users in the metagame. Qwilfish can function not only as a support unit, absorbing and setting up Toxic Spikes, in addition to disrupting walls and sweepers, but also as an offensive rain sweeper. However, Qwilfish does have its faults. Its minuscule defenses make it struggle to take even resisted attacks and will not last long unless played with great care. Overall though, with the right support, Qwilfish can function well even in Ubers, and can surprise unprepared teams.</p>

[SET]
name: Uber Support
move 1: Spikes / Toxic Spikes
move 2: Taunt
move 3: Destiny Bond
move 4: Waterfall
item: Life Orb / Splash Plate
ability: Swift Swim
nature: Adamant / Jolly
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

<p>With Qwilfish's ability Swift Swim, it reaches a high Speed that allows it to fulfill many roles. In fact, it is the fastest user of Toxic Spikes in rain. It can easily get one layer of an entry hazard with its spectacular Speed, or cripple a wall with Taunt. Boosted Waterfall in the rain dents even bulky Pokemon, and should a wall attempt to take down Qwilfish, it can drag them down along with it using Destiny Bond. It will also stop bulky sweepers such as Dialga, Zekrom, and Ho-Oh from sweeping a team thanks to playing mind games on the opponent when it alternates between Taunt and Destiny Bond. The bulky sweeper must either have let both Pokemon be KOed or try to waste Destiny Bond's 8 PP. Taunt can easily stop that and force the sweeper to switch, or have both Pokemon KOed. The final thing that Qwilfish is useful for is that it can absorb Toxic Spikes. Many offensive rain teams fall prey to Toxic Spikes, and Qwilfish will render any attempt to set up Toxic Spikes useless.</p>

<p>However, Qwilfish's lack of bulk will always be its Achilles' Heel. It will often be 2HKOed by even weak resisted attacks, not to mention being easily OHKOed by any sweeper's attacks. This will make very difficult for Qwilfish to switch in. Life Orb recoil does not help too much either. A Splash Plate may be used if Life Orb recoil is undesirable. However, Qwilfish is so frail that 10% of its HP matters little. Even with defensive EV investment, it lacks the bulk to take neutral attacks and must employ a hit-and-run strategy while setting up entry hazards or stopping sweepers.</p>

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

<p>An Adamant nature is generally preferred for Qwilfish just for the extra damage, as the Jolly nature only allows it to outrun +2 Blaziken, Scarf Darkrai, and Shaymin-S. However, if one considers that important, then it is usable, especially due to the fact that Qwilfish may not attack very often anyway. Poison Jab may be used as a secondary STAB over Waterfall if one favors dealing damage to Water-types over taking down walls, beating sweepers, or setting up entry hazards, depending on which move it chooses to replace. However, the supporting moves are generally what allow Qwilfish to be so versatile. Qwilfish can be only used in the rain, as it allows it to double its Speed and increase the power of its STAB Waterfall.</p>

<p>Qwilfish generally does not rely too much on teammates to fulfill its role due to its ability to prevent sweeps on its own and set up at almost any time. However, Kyogre is essential to provide the rain for Qwilfish. Giratina-O also makes a great teammate for Qwilfish, as it blocks any attempt to remove entry hazards that Qwilfish has set up. Grass Arceus resists a large number of Qwilfish's weaknesses, and can take care of Groudon, one of the best checks to Qwilfish.</p>

[SET]
name: Uber Swords Dance
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Taunt / Destiny Bond
move 3: Waterfall
move 4: Poison Jab
item: Life Orb
ability: Swift Swim
nature: Adamant / Jolly
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

<p>Qwilfish may also fulfill the role of an offensive sweeper in the rain. With its reasonable Attack and excellent Speed due to its ability Swift Swim, it can potentially set up and sweep. Qwilfish's dual STABs provide great coverage, and are able to OHKO Palkia, Kyogre, Lugia, Ho-Oh, Chansey, Mewtwo, and more after Stealth Rock and a Swords Dance boost. If Qwilfish is facing a Pokemon it struggles to harm, such as Giratina, it can render it useless with Taunt, attempt to drag down along with it using Destiny Bond, or set up with entry hazards. Qwilfish's Poison typing also allows it to fulfill the great utility role of absorbing Toxic Spikes, and being immune to poison prevents it from being worn down like other Swift Swim sweepers such as Kabutops and Kingdra.</p>

<p>Qwilfish's primary weakness, as mentioned before, is its poor bulk. It must really rely on prediction in order to pull off a Swords Dance, or it may get KOed immediately or after a couple of turns of Life Orb recoil. Qwilfish must attempt to force out something it can check, such as Chansey, and set up Swords Dance. Once it successfully gains a Swords Dance boost, it can severely punch holes in the opposing team or even sweep it. If it encounters something it struggles to take down, it can lay an entry hazard or drag it down with Destiny Bond in order to have the last laugh. When Qwilfish is in no condition to attempt a sweep, it still has the power to revenge weakened Pokemon with Destiny Bond.</p>

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

<p>Rain support from Kyogre, of course, is essential for Qwilfish's success. The Speed boost will allow it to outrun almost anything. This allows it to sweep entire teams late-game. It is inadvisable to allow Qwilfish to attempt a switch before an opponent's Groudon is removed from their team. Removing Qwilfish's rain almost immediately stops it from sweeping. Explosion may be used over Taunt in order to take out something when it has no options left. This is especially useful in case a Groudon switches in. Waterfall cannot do much to it due to the sun, and Explosion can cause a lot of pain for Groudon. Team Preview is very useful to mark out the threats that can take Qwilfish down.</p>

<p>Due to its frailness, Qwilfish can never prepare a sweep by switching in on anything. Even switching in on a resisted attack can prevent it from sweeping. Maintaining Qwilfish's health is critical. It must instead come in after a teammate has fainted, threaten the enemy Pokemon out, and set up. Wish support from Chansey may prove useful although it would be hard for it to switch back in when it is at low health. However, using Wish and then switching to Qwilfish when on relatively high health may prove useful, since if Qwilfish switches in on a resisted attack and survives it, the health provided by Wish will replenish its health, preparing Qwilfish for a sweep. Mewtwo may also be a good partner for Qwilfish as it can take down Pokemon such as Ferrothorn, Rayquaza, Groudon, and Giratina, which Qwilfish cannot harm.</p>

[Other Options]

<p>Due to Qwilfish's limited movepool, there are not many extra options that it may run. The utility set may run Poison Jab over Waterfall in order to deal with Water-types such as Kyogre and Palkia, but lacks the power to deal significant damage. Due to Qwilfish's frailness, Flail can also be used to deal strong neutral damage to Pokemon that resist Waterfall. Pain Split is an option that allows it to cripple Pokemon with high HP, but it cannot survive long even with replenished HP. Aqua Tail allows Qwilfish to do some extra damage at the cost of accuracy. Explosion can be used over Destiny Bond as it acts similarly, but does not guarantee a kill due to its lack of power. Toxic can also be used in order to cripple Groudon and Giratina-O as they switch in.</p>

[Checks and Counters]

<p>Groudon is a surefire counter to Qwilfish. It provides the sun that cuts Qwilfish's amazing Speed and weakens Waterfall. Rayquaza renders rain's effects useless so that it can outrun and destroy Qwilfish. Its immense physical bulk allows it to take even a boosted attack with ease. Dialga, Giratina, and Ferrothorn resist Qwilfish's dual STAB, and can easily KO it but must be wary of Taunt and Destiny Bond dragging them down as well. Any Pokemon with a priority move will easily take care of Qwilfish due to its minimal bulk. Scarf Mewtwo also outruns Jolly Qwilfish, and can OHKO it with Psycho Break.</p>

Qwilfish should use Adamant Nature in my opinion. Adamant already gives enough speed for outspeeding Scarf Latios and Terakion. With Adamant Qwilfish has a greater chance of OHKOimg Scarf Kyogre with +2 Poison Jab. Spikes should be slashed in the Swords Dancer since Rain abusers like Gyarados Kingdra loves Spikes support.

Groudon is a hard counter thanks to Drought. A slower and bulkier Lugia can be problematic as it can Reflect or even Earthquake to KO poor fishy. The Poison Stab should be mentioned a lot since it kills Shaymin-S and Grass Arceus. Nattorei will be extremely annoying to fishy.

I would rather have Tspikes as the main option for the Utiliy Set. Qwilfish isn't very bulky and likely won't get as many layers of Spikes as it should. While it can get up 2 Layers of Toxic Spikes a bit more often. You even said it was the fastest TSpikes user with rain so it can almost always get a layer up of TSpikes. Even 2 in some cases. This can be a big blow to stall teams for things like Palkia which they rely on to usually beat Kyogre.

I think that they are equally viable. If your team already has a spiker, toxic spikes is more viable. If you don't, then spikes is fine.

I have used Qwilfish quite a bit myself, its still pretty good! I would prefer Adamant to be the first slash in though.

Adamant is better for the SD set, but I do prefer Jolly on the Spiker set, letting you outspeed Scarf Darkrai and Scarf Skymin and kill it with Waterfall or Destiny Bond.

Anyway, have you tested the gen 4 lead set??

(Straight out of the Gen 4 Ubers lead thread)
Qwilfish @ Focus Sash
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 Atk/6 Def/252 Spe
Adamant
- Payback
- Aqua Jet
- Toxic Spikes / Spikes
- Destiny Bond

In case you may have noticed, this looks and plays a lot like the physical Cloyster lead (it even has the same attack stat!). At first it may seem outclassed, as it lacks Rapid Spin and actually loses to Shaymin-S. However, Qwilfish has some very specific advantages over Cloyster. First of all, Swift Swim is a very helpful ability. Thanks to it, this means that you will always get two layers of Toxic Spkes up (barring parahax) against Kyogre, Choice Scarf or not. This also means that if Qwilfish has the disadvantage in the lead situation and you have Kyogre, it can later abuse its Speed to set up Toxic Spikes or use its other advantage over Cloyster, Destiny Bond. Thanks to Destiny Bond, if a lead such as Dialga decides to lay down Stealth Rock and then attack, you can potentially get a surprise kill. If that doesn't suit your style, Explosion is still a worthy move. Qwilfish can also absorb Toxic Spikes, which is a very rare but helpful quality in the Ubers metagame. Finally, unlike Cloyster, Qwilfish is not weak to Stealth Rock, which, when combined with rain support, can make Qwilfish more useful if you face a lead that beats you (Darkrai, Shaymin-S, and Deoxys-A mainly) Something to note against Deoxys-A is that if it does not have Shadow Ball or Thunder, Qwilfish may actually defeat it. I may test more bulky Qwilfish spreads later to see if I can beat Deoxys-A consistently, but don't count on it. Otherwise, Qwilfish plays in a very similar manner that physical Cloyster does.

The problem with the lead set though, is now there is a wifi clause. Probs most times qwilfish won't even be lead. It is similar to the support set and now no one even uses deo-s anymore.

With the adamant/jolly thing, qwilfish still can't do much to skymin but destiny or tspikes and scarf darkrai is really uncommon now. I don't know, though. Personally, I think they all have their merits and the SD set would also like to outrun scarf darkrai and skymin too. I think they are pretty much equal.

Maybe a mixed set can be viable? Also, I'm surprised as to why Nattorei isn't mentioned in counters. It's immune to Poison and resists Waterfall

Set Comments

- Intimidate (Salamence?) is rare in Ubers, as is Spikes. Qwilfish makes good use of both thanks to max Defense, and Thunderwave providing Parahax for more heals.

-Black Sludge makes it useful for Item Clause, and punishes Trick users, especially if you have Giratina-O, or Arceus on your team, you can prevent Black Sludge from being Tricked back onto a teammate.

- Absorbs freaking Toxic Spikes, and is Immune to Toxic (allowing it to outstall Chansey with Taunt and Destiny Bond; forcing a switch).

- Destiny Bond is great for taking down sweepers and dragging down extra Pokemon when on low health, which becomes easier after Thunderwave cuts foe's speed to 1/4.

- Taunt works decently as you will be surprised by Qwilfish's longevity with Intimidate support backed by Bug, Fighting, Ice, Steel, Fire, and Water resistances... (physical moves of course).

- Thunderwave is very helpful for team support, and makes better use of Spikes than Toxic Spikes for this set because it buys more turns and doesn't interfere with the Poison status.

- Can provide many roles in 1 Pokemon slot for your team: Entry hazard user, Status platform, Revenge killer (Destiny Bond), and check to Choiced physical foes (think Scarf Palkia, Scarf Jirachi, Band Scizor, etc.) due to Intimidate and typing.

If you use intimidate, then no Swift Swim ability. Without Swift Swim, Qwilfish is too slow to be effective. In fact base 85 speed is slower than all ubers, and with your ev spread, it is way to slow and isn't bulky either. I doubt you even tested the set as it is gimmicky at best.

With just 334 HP and 272 Def isn't great either even with Intimidate especially when you are slower than every other Ubers. If you are looking for an Intimidate user, try Gyarados. Even though Gyarados isn't great, he can actually wall most physical Arceus formes, Ho-Oh, Kingdra, some Groudons and retaliate with Dragon Tail. Qwilfish absorbs Toxic Spikes and that's about it.

Even with access to the invaluable Spikes, Qwilfish should be abusing Swift Swim not Intimidate. The scarfers you mentioned: Scarf Palkia (It OHKOes you with everything not named Outrage meaning you can only switch in on that move), Scarf Jirachi? It can just U-turn out or even Trick the choiced item to Qwilfish. What's more Scarf Jirachi is very rare in Ubers. Choice Band Scizor can just U-Turn out of Qwilfish who can't do anything back to Scizor and it doesn't have to worry about powerful Waterfalls from the Standard Ubers Qwilfish. Also the only scarfed moves that your Qwilfish set can take are Palkia's Outrage, Scizor(who doesn't mind it since he will U-Turn out), Jirachi who can Trick or just U-turn away, Terakion (who can smack you hard with Earthquake or Stone Edge anyway), Heracross (if he get's guts from Thunder Wave, you are dead), Sazandora's U-Turn (who OHKOes you with Draco Meteor). The list of moves Qwilfish can take stops here.

Also, any Special attacking Scarfer who are the most common in Ubers will easily KO your Qwilfish set: Reshiram, Palkia, Dialga, Kyogre, Latios, Shaymin-S, Darkrai, Mewtwo, and a buckload more.

Without Swift Swim (since you are using Intimidate which is the dumbest option for poor fishy), your Qwilfish sits at 206 speed meaning you are not revenge killing anyone with that sluggish Speed. If you want to paralyse them, Qwilfish needs to survive 2 attacks, one it switches in on the opponent and the other turn to paralyse the opponent first. Asking Qwilfish to survive two turns of powerful attack is just suicidal.

Next you are not killing Chansey, it is Chansey who walls you. She Seismic Tosses you 3 times then switch to Forretress who you can't touch it at all and spin away everything. A smart opponent can just switch out or stall out the 8 PP Destiny Bond.

Quilfish...in uber? I've used it on my OU rain team before, but it's only been OK at best. Definatly not like some others who are up for debate. (like Blaziken and Chandelure) I don't know, maybe it's just me.

Qwilfish is seen in Uber since last gen, it might be rare but this little fish definitely works in Ubers provided you give it the right support.

In Ubers, you have permanent rain from Kyogre who is bulky and hits hard. Kyogre is almost seen in every 2 Uber matches and this is no exaggeration. Toxic Spikes kills many Ubers such as Groudon, Kyogre, Arceus, Zekrom, Palkia, Darkrai, Mewtwo and a lot others. The ability to remove Toxic Spikes from the field is amazing. Qwilfish can setup it's own Spikes as well.

Unlike OU, Swift Swim + Drizzle isn't banned in Ubers. With it's blazing Speed, Qwilfish can just Swords Dance up and break through walls.

Even with defensive EV investment, it lacks the bulk to take neutral attacks and must employ a hit and run strategy with setting up entry hazards or stopping sweepers.</p>

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

<p>An Adamant nature is generally preferred for Qwilfish just for the extra damage, as the Jolly nature only allows it to outrun Scarf Darkrai and Shaymin-S. However, if one considers that important, then it is usable, especially due to the fact that Qwilfish may not attack very often anyway. Poison Jab may be used as a secondary STAB over Waterfall if one favors the ability to deal damage to Water-types more important than the ability to either take down walls, beat sweepers or set up entry hazards, depending on which move it chooses to replace. However, the supporting moves are generally is what allows Qwilfish to be so versatile. Qwilfish can be only used in the rain, naturally as it allows it to double its Speed and increase the power of its STAB move, Waterfall.</p>

<p>Qwilfish generally does not rely too much on teammates to fulfill its role due to its ability to prevent sweeps on its on own and set up at almost any time. However, Kyogre is essential to provide the Rain for Qwilfish. Giratina-O also makes a great teammate for Qwilfish as it blocks any attempt to remove entry hazards that Qwilfish has set up. and Grass Arceus resists as large number of Qwilfish's weaknesses as well as taking and can take care of Groudon, one of Qwilfish's banes.</p>

[SET COMMENTS]

<p>Qwilfish may also fulfill the role of an offensive sweeper in the rain. With its reasonable Attack and excellent Speed due to its ability Swift Swim, it can potentially set up and sweep. Qwilfish's dual STABs provides great coverage and is are able to OHKO Palkia, Kyogre, Lugia, Ho-Oh, Chansey, Mewtwo, and so on after Stealth Rock and a Swords Dance boost. If Qwilfish is facing a Pokemon it struggles to harm such as Giratina, it can render it useless with Taunt, attempt to drag down an enemy with Destiny Bond or set up on it with entry hazards. Qwilfish's Poison typing also allows it to fulfill the great utility role of absorbing Toxic Spikes and being immune to Poison allowing it not to get worn down unlike prevents it from being worn down like some other Swift Swim sweepers such as Kabutops and Kingdra.</p>

<p>Qwilfish's primary weakness, as mentioned before, is its of bulk. It must really rely on prediction in order to lay pull off a Swords Dance or else it may get KOed immediately or after a couple of turns of Life Orb recoil. Qwilfish must attempt to force out something it can check such as Chansey and convince the opposing player to switch, not stay in and attack. Once it successfully gains a Swords Dance boost, it can severely punch holes in the opposing team or even sweep it. If it encounters something it struggles to take down, it can lay an entry hazard or drag it down with Destiny Bond in order to have the last laugh. When Qwilfish is in no condition to attempt a sweep, it still has the power to revenge weakened Pokemon and then try finish them off with Destiny Bond.</p>

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

<p>Rain support from Kyogre, of course, is essential for Qwilfish's success. The speed boost will allow it to outrun almost anything. This allows it to be able to to sweep a team late game. Waterfall cannot do much to it due to the sun provided and Explosion can cause a lot of pain for Groudon.

It must instead come in after a teammate has fainted, and threaten the enemy Pokemon out, and set up. Wish support from Chansey may prove useful although it would be hard for it to switch back in when it is on at low health.

The utility set may run Poison Jab over Waterfall in order to deal with Water-types such as Kyogre and Palkia but lacks the power to deal significant damage. Due to Qwilfish's frailness, Flail can also be used to deal strong neutral damage to Pokemon that resist Waterfall. Pain Split is an option that allows it to cripple high HP Pokemon but it cannot survive long even with replenished HP. Aqua Tail allows for Qwilfish to do some extra damage at the cost of accuracy. Explosion can be used over Destiny Bond as it acts similarly but does not guarantee a kill due to its lack of power. Toxic can also be used in order to cripple Groudon and Giratina-O on the switch in.</p>

[Checks and Counters]

<p>Groudon is a surefire counter to Qwilfish. It provides the sun that halts Qwilfish's amazing speed and it weakens Waterfall. Rayquaza renders rain's effects useless so that it can outrun and destroy Qwilfish. Its immense physical bulk allows it to take even a boosted attack with ease. Dialga, Giratina, and Ferrothorn resists Qwilfish's dual STAB and can easily KO it but must be wary of Taunt and Destiny Bond causing them to be dragged dragging them down as well. Any Pokemon with a priority move will easily take care of it due to Qwilfish's minimal bulk. Scarf Mewtwo also outruns Jolly Qwilfish and can OHKO it with Psycho Break.</p>

[Dream World]

<p>Qwilfish has the ability Intimidate as a Dream World ability. It has little use as the main reason to use Qwilfish is thanks to to take advantage its ability, Swift Swim.</p>

Some minor mistakes, mostly from missing words and capitalization errors. Not bad.
