Pokemon Black and White In-Game Tiers

Thing is, when comparing Archen to Pidove, he doesn't EVEN need Fly: he gets Acrobatics a few levels after you get it, which is a lot stronger than Fly, especially when compared with Archen's raw offenses.

Palpitoad has Water Absorb iirc(I don't remember if that was the DW ability though) so it can swap in on water attacks if necessary.

No, they don't. Not even close. Have you looked at Palpitoad's TM list? It's terrible. It doesn't even learn Dig. Simipour learns Acrobatics, Rock Slide, Dig, Brick Break, Shadow Claw, Grass Knot, Blizzard, and Bite as coverage options. Palpitoad learns none of those (it gains a few when it evolves, but certainly not all of them).

And are you actually going to need most of those? Blizzard, Grass Knot, and Acrobatics are really the only ones that stand out, and of those, Seismitoad also learns Grass Knot, can learn Poison moves to cover Grass-types, and gets Drain Punch/Focus Blast for Hydreigon. It also has the benefit of being able to take on N's Zekrom if necessary.

The differences between their offensive stats are actually larger than the difference in their defensive ones. While Seismitoad certainly has a much better survivability, Simipour deals solid damage (since it has amazing coverage and decent offenses) and has a great speed for in-game, while Seismitoad's damage output is disappointing at best and is frequently outsped.

Wrong. Simipour only has 13 more base points in Special Attack and Attack than Seismitoad, but Seismitoad's 105/75/75 defenses are far, far superior to Simipour's flimsy 75/63/63. Seismitoad's 74 Speed isn't too bad for in-game, and its Swift Swim ability can potentially make it faster than Simipour with a quick use of Rain Dance, which it learns naturally and also allows it to sweep teams with boosted Water attacks. Palpitoad's superior typing also helps make up for the difference in offenses.

Also, the late game is kinda a joke aside from Marshal and Ghetsis, while Panpour is strictly better (aside from typing) from levels 22 through 36 since the difference in SpA means that Simipour's Scald will outdamage Palpitoad's Muddy Water.

You can pick up the Scald TM in Cold Storage, so the difference in damage output isn't as big for as long as you might think. Palpitoad can also boost itself with Rain Dance as I mentioned earlier.

There's also the fact that while Tympole is decent for most of the game, Panpour has a fairly long period of time where he is absolutely amazing compared to the rest of your team. And even though he isn't as amazing late game, that didn't stop Lillipup from being High Tier.

The reason Lillipup is in High tier is because he is good when you first get it and stays good throughout the whole game. Panpour absolutely sucks when you first grab it, does well once it gets Scald, but starts sucking again late game, whereas the Tympole line is decent when you first get it and stays useful throughout the whole game.

I really like the idea of an ingame tier it is a good reference and I must say I agree with the tier list.

Regarding the Simipour vs. Tympole debate, although I find both useful ingame, I think one factor worth noting is that the use of Simipour requires the choice of Servine, the weakest starter. Personally this is the dealbreaker for me, because I generally find grass pokemon to be limited in usefulness, and Servine leaves a lot to be desired for much of the game.

(Potential Spoilers below)
Also, do you all think it's worth making a tier list for fighting the Elite 4 a second time through? I suppose that would be considered post-game, however I bring this up because you don't actually get to be called champion until you beat Alder, all you do is stop team Plasma. I suppose making such a tier would be challenging because it probably contradicts the current tier in some ways. For example, I believe Terrakion is excellent for the second leg of the game, but a mediocre addition to the team during the first leg.

Snivy isn't exactly THAT bad though, its more of a team player with Leech Seed, and you can kill the masses of Sandiles with it...

Also, what's the point of making post-game? You can just do things like pokeshift your RNG'd EV-trained LV 100 Mewtwo over and rape face.

Does anyone else think that Emolga could be moved up to mid?
I've used Emolga and I found it to be quite an efficient way to beat the game. I know its stats are poor overall, but with Acrobatics it hits anything without a resist suprisingly hard, as in 1-2HKO hard (I'm aware that Archen does this better, but Emolga does it well too). It's quite useful for all those fighting types in the game that you face. It has other useful moves like Discharge and Thunderwave, though these take a back seat to Acrobatics. It's poor defenses are made up for by the fact that it has plenty of resistances and only 2 weaknesses (one of which is ice, which is a rare attacking type). It can actually survive for a while without having to run to the pokemon centre after every battle or spend money on healing items.

It's main flaw is that it can be difficult to obtain if you're unlucky, and also requires some grinding. It also didn't do a whole lot against the elite 4 other than OHKOing Meinshao. Still, I think it's attributes are good enough to allow it into mid.

I REALLY don't think outclassing should be factored in these tiers, and think a few positions should be changed here and there, but other than that this is a pretty dang nice list, kudos to you on making it! My only real gripe (aside from some of the listings) is the lack of a Mid split to Upper Mid and Lower Mid, and this makes quite a lot of Pokemon seem much better/worse than they actually are.

Now for the disagreements:

Cobalion - High to Mid (Upper Mid if ever made)

I am NOT, repeat, NOT bashing Cobalion as a Pokemon, I know darn well its a fantastic choice ingame and absolutely curbstomps the 2 gyms after it with no training whatsoever and also beats Grimsley easily. However, you can't just ignore backtracking to an otherwise optional location just to get it, its extreme difficulty in catching and its fairly meh performance in the Elite 4. The payoff is pretty brilliant, but these flaws in my opinion stop it from entering High. If there was a Mid split though, it would definately be in Upper Mid.

Frillish - Mid to Low

I have no idea why people think THIS thing has potential. Its stats are meh, you can't get it until Twist Mountain, its VERY underlevelled when you get it (the HIGHEST level you can find it at is level 25 -.-), it has a pretty mediocre level up movepool, a long time untill it evolves and can't be obtained without Surf. And since you most likely will have a Water type of SOME sort already to know Surf (Oshawott, Tympole, Panpour, hell, even Ducklett), why not just use them instead of wasting your time with this piece of crap?

Elgyem - Mid to Low

I'm sorry, does learning Thunderbolt and Shadow REALLY make up for its late appearance, late evolution, terrible level up movepool, awful speed, rarity, mediocre bulk and bad typing? REALLY? One of the worst ingame Psychic types, right next to Munna.

Sewaddle - Mid to High (or Upper Mid if it ever gets made)

I might be biased, but I personally think Sewaddle deserves High. Happiness evolution isn't a problem at all since you can just abuse the system, buy loads of potions, use them on it after every battle to raise its happiness and it should evolve easily within the early 20s at either Route 4 or the Desert Resort (and please don't try and say money limitations is a problem in that case, since Potions are incredibly cheap and money is very easy to obtain in B/W). Aside from that, it has powerful attacks early on in Bug Bite and Razor Leaf, nice stats for when you obtain it, early evolutions (including Leavanny) and is generally a nice choice. Admittedly, it's typing isn't particularly brilliant (but it does make it an awesome choice against Team Plasma) and it has an annoying period when it's stuck with just Bug Bite and Razor Leaf for ages, but most Pokemon tend to have that problem (coughJoltikbeingstuckwithElectrowebuntilIcirruscough). This is one example where it would be MUCH better if we had Mid split into Upper and Lower Mid, since Sewaddle isn't really High, but it definately is an above-average ingame choice.

Terrakion - Mid to Low

blablabla I know its super strong and fast blablabla yes I know about Sacred Sword being awesome blablabla, but you need to catch Cobalion to get to it first, its very difficult to catch, it needs to be grinded up to the level of the rest of your team and it comes at the literal last point of the game, where you most likely have already finalised your team.

Emolga - Low to Mid (Lower Mid if ever made)

Funnily enough, Emolga isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. Sure it's rare and has mediocre stats, but its typing is pretty nice overall and it learns numerous great moves, most notably Acrobatics at level 30 to compensate for this. It's by no means the most stellar Pokemon in the game, but it definately isn't terrible and definately doesn't deserve to be lumped in with the likes of Shelmet, Larvesta, Heatmor and Deino.

Pidove - Low to Mid (Lower Mid if ever made)

Many people here have already argued this for me, but I'll just add by saying Scope Lens, Super Luck and Air Cutter really compensates for the lack of power early on, and when this is about to wear off, it gets Return for good physical power and Fly later on to ensure it isn't deadweight. Definately in no way a Starly, but it deserves better than Low most definately.

Cobalion utterly destroys the Dark E4 and can sweep N and Ghetsis by himself. That is not meh performance against the Elite Four. Furthermore, it's like 10 minutes of backtracking...all you have to do is Fly to another City, walk a little ways to a river, and Surf to a short 3 floor cave. Not hard. Furthermore, Cobalion is at the level your team should be by that point, so you don't even have to waste time grinding it. Besides, you have to backtrack too if you want to revive Archen, who we all know is amazing.

Frillish - Mid to Low

I'll probably move this down to Low.

Probably going to knock this to Low too.

Sewaddle - Mid to High (or Upper Mid if it ever gets made)

This is one example where it would be MUCH better if we had Mid split into Upper and Lower Mid, since Sewaddle isn't really High, but it definately is an above-average ingame choice.

Sewaddle's typing is a huge disappointment (2 4X weaknesses? lol no) and it's not particularly useful against any of the gyms except Clay (but his main is packing Rock Slide so :/).

Will probably knock down to Low.

Emolga - Low to Mid (Lower Mid if ever made)

It's by no means the most stellar Pokemon in the game, but it definately isn't terrible and definately doesn't deserve to be lumped in with the likes of Shelmet, Larvesta, Heatmor and Deino.

Emolga's stats don't really cut it late game, and its not useful against any of the E4. (Except maybe Marshal, but most of his mons pack Rock moves)

Again, Archen>Pidove. There is literally no reason to use it over Archen or Sigilyph, who are leagues better, and there really isn't that pressing of a need for a Flying-type early game.

I actually feel really stupid about the whole Cobalion business considering at one point I argued it for High, and to be quite honest, I'm siding with Fire here on it, it may come late, but it doesn't even need to be trained to beat the next TWO Gym Leaders, and Swords Dance by the E4 is pure sex.

However, I do REALLY think that if possible Mid should be split into Upper and Lower Mid, as it gives a more accurate placing of numerous Pokes on the list (IE, putting Sewaddle in plain ol' Mid implies it's meh, putting it in Upper Mid implies it's a good choice, but not a top one, which is exactly what it is). It also can help settle long running arguments for Pokes like Lillipup, Petilil and Joltik (which BTW you should also mention the ingame trade Petilil is Black only). I also kinda disagree with the whole outclassing thing and feel that it also makes some Pokes appear worse than they actually are (IE, the point about Pidove mentioned above), but really that depends on the preferences of who makes the list. I still REALLY think the Mid split should be considered though.

Right, so this has been sitting for a while.

Tomorrow I'll add sprites then I'd say it's ready for G/P. In the meantime, please post any comments or feedback you may have. :)

Introduction

The best Pokemon is one who that [just keeping it consistent] is obtained at the start of the game, can OHKO enemies off the bat, and only loses only 1 HP when damaged. He also learns every HM, heals himself automatically, and has some neat ability to top it off. Such a Pokemon doesn't exist, of course, but this means that Pokemon closer to this ideal are the best.

The goal of this in-game tier list is to recommend a select group of Pokemon for an efficient run-through of the game. Those will be put in High tier. Very inefficient Pokemon will be put in Low tier. Pokemon who that are neither efficient nor inefficient—[use this dash]for example, Pokemon who have an initial downside but can eventually perform as well as High tiered ones—[use this dash]are put in Middle tier.

Pokemon are graded based on five factors: availability, raw stats, movepool, typing, and matchups against major in-game battles. Availability is a measure of how easy it is to obtain the Pokemon, and it ranges from very low (gift Pokemon) to very high (common “tall grass” "tall grass" Pokemon). It also takes into account the part of the game at which you are able to get the Pokemon. For example, a Pokemon could be extremely good, but he is would be worthless if you get him after every major battle. Raw stats affect the Pokemon's ability to KO others and to take hits in-game. Obviously, you want Pokemon with great stats, since that means they can easily KO many other Pokemon without fainting.

A Pokemon’s Pokemon's movepool is the variety of attacks the Pokemon learns. Does he need a lot of TMs to have a good moveset? Can he learn a lot of HMs to help you navigate in the overworld? Does he learn powerful attacks of his own type? Although TMs are reusable in Black and White, having good TM compatibility and level-up moves are still of great importance.

Typing and matchups go hand in hand. The optimal typing both gives a Pokemon STAB on useful attack types while leaving and leaves it him with few or no weaknesses. If a Pokemon is a dual type, his typing should complement it offensively and defensively. Typing also determines the major battles in which a Pokemon will be useful. (Major battles can range from Gym Leaders battles to Rival battles.) Therefore, it is useful to use Pokemon with good type combinations that give them an advantage in most of the game's major battles.

Don't confuse an efficient run with a speed run. Speed runs are often segmented and recorded while manipulating luck through resets; these aim for the absolute fastest on-screen time, but the real time spent on them is much, much more greater. If you want to play through the game in a relatively low time frame, then you’re looking for an efficient run.

A team is actually the most efficient (in terms of utility per team member) if it only consists of a single member.[period] This tier list will assume a team size of around three or four Pokemon, however, as otherwise the list would be extremely centralized around starters and early-game Pokemon—everything wouldn't be worth the effort. ; however, this tier list will assume a team size of around three to four Pokemon. Otherwise, the list would be extremely centralized around starters and early-game Pokemon while everything else wouldn't be worth the effort. this change is intended to keep the more related ideas in one sentence

High Tier

Archen

Availability: Mid-Game
Stats: High
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Available fairly early on, Archen and has excellent offensive stats and a great movepool. Its evolution has insane Attack and Speed stats and will rip through most in-game opponents with STAB Acrobatics alone.

Cobalion

Availability: Late
Stats: High
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Though coming late, Comes late, but it Cobalion is at the high level of 42, which should be slightly above your team average by that point. Its typing is excellent defensively, leaving it with many resistances and only a few weaknesses, and it is fast, fairly strong, and learns Swords Dance not too long after you get it, backed by reliable STAB attacks. It is capable of tearing through most of the late-game fights by itself.

Darumaka

Availability: Early-Mid
Stats: High
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Darumaka comes early with Hustle, which makes its STAB Fire-type attacks obscenely powerful. Couple this with its evolution's huge Attack stat and and Sheer Force, which sharply boosts the power of its most powerful STAB attacks Fire Punch and Flare Blitz, and you have a complete monster on your hands. It has enough Speed to outpace most of the game's enemies, decent bulk afforded by its great HP, and a good movepool.

Drilbur

Availability: Early
Stats: High
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Excellent Attack and good Speed stats combined with a useful typing, it Drilbur gets most if not all of its good moves (including Swords Dance) by level-up,[comma] and its evolution gains a ton of resistances. It is very useful versus the late game bosses.

Joltik

Availability: Late-Mid
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Though Joltik comes somewhat late, but it grinds easily against the Gym that will soon follow. Great Speed, good Special Attack, a useful STAB combination, and Compoundeyes Thunder make it very helpful throughout the rest of the game.

Lillipup

Availability: Beginning
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Lillipup comes very early and is extremely good early game with good Attack and early access Take Down. It also learns Crunch and elemental Fangs for coverage, has fast evolutions, and is fairly bulky. Although it loses a bit of its luster near the end, it remains a very useful Pokemon throughout the entire game.

Oshawott

Availability: Starter
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Probably the best of the few obtainable Water-types, Oshawott. It has a great movepool, good stats, and does well against most of the Gyms. It is also a Starter Pokemon, so you do not have to worry about trying to catch it.

Petilil

Availability: Early
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Shallow
Additional Comments: Although its coverage sucks, that doesn't matter for this Pokemon. Good Special Attack and decent Speed stats combined with Sleep Powder AND Quiver Dance make this thing a monster that can sweep through most opponents with great ease. It should be noted that there is a Petilil with good IVs and an excellent nature that can be obtained through in an easy trade in Nacrene City fairly early on. maybe mention what 'mon you trade for?

Sandile

Availability: Early
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: It comes fairly early and possesses a useful STAB combination with just enough Attack and Speed to back it up. Perhaps its most useful trait is the ability Moxie—[use this dash]with it, Sandile's attack will be raised every time it KOes something, which makes it a deadly threat that can solo most trainers, particularly ones with fuller rosters such as the Elite Four.

Sawk

Availability: Early
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: It comes early on and stays useful throughout the entire game. Fighting is an excellent STAB to have in Black and White and Sawk has great Attack and good enough Speed to abuse it. It also gets the ability Sturdy, which stops all OHKOes, and decent TM compatibility. Getting one of these is nearly guaranteed victory against the second Gym. However, Sawk is hard to find in White due to it being a shaking grass only Pokemon.

Scraggy

Availability: Early
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Excellent typing leaves it with a sick STAB combination that will destroy most opponents. It is bulky, has decent Attack, and an excellent movepool, including some very high power STAB attacks such as Hi Jump Kick. It beats three out of the four Eilte Four members by virtue of its typing alone.

Sigilyph

Availability: Early
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Sigilyph starts off strong and stays strong until the very end. It has a great movepool and is fast and powerful, with a surprisingly useful typing for countering the litany of Fighting-types in Black and White. It is also one of the few usable Pokemon that can also learn the useful HM Fly.

Tepig

Availability: Starter
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Fairly bulky and very strong, Tepig. It has a good combination of STABs and great TM compatibility, and is useful against most of the Gyms. Available as a starter.

Timburr (with Trade Evolution)

Availability: Early
Stats: High
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Its level-up movepool is excellent and it has a very meaty Attack stat. Although it is slow, it has the bulk to survive most attacks. Fighting-types are generally very useful in Black and White, anyway.

Timburr (no Trade Evolution)

Availability: Early
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Gurdurr is still very bulky with Eviolite and still has a decent 105 base Attack stat to work off of.

Throh

Availability: Early
Stats: High
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: It is bulky enough to take almost any attack,[comma] and has both decent Attack and a good movepool. It is a very reliable tank that is useful throughout the entire game. However, Throh is hard to find in Black due to it being a shaking grass only Pokemon.

Tympole

Availability: Early
Stats: Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Available early on, it has a good movepool, decent stats, and excellent Water / Ground <=spaces typing after evolution, leaving it with only one weakness. Tympole is probably the best Water-type aside from Oshawott.

Mid Tier

Axew

Availability: Late
Stats: High
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: It has excellent stats, great typing, and learns both Swords Dance and Dragon Dance to make it capable of sweeping entire teams. Unfortunately, it comes late and has late evolutions, so it will need some babying.

Basculin

Availability: Mid-Game
Stats: Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: It stats are only average and it comes only about mid-game, but it learns a lot of powerful attacks.

Blitzle

Availability: Early
Stats: Average
Movepool: Shallow
Additional Comments: Blitzle has very high Speed and has decent coverage, but it is very frail and only has modest offenses. While useful early game, but it really loses its touch late game.

Cottonee

Availability: Early
Stats: Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Although a good annoyer with Prankster and a variety of status moves, but it has poor type coverage, mediocre power, and no real way to sweep.

Deerling

Availability: Late-Mid
Stats: Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: It has a good movepool and decent stats, but it comes late and is a bit frail.

Druddigon

Availability: Late
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Though powerful and possessing a wide movepool, Druddigon Powerful and has a wide movepool, but it comes late and has a very low Speed stat. is extremely slow.

Ducklett

Availability: Mid-Game
Stats: Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Ducklett is a useful HM mule and has decent stats and a good type combination, but HMs aren't as important in Black and White,[comma] and it's rather mediocre until it evolves. It also only comes around mid-game.

Durant

Availability: Late
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Durant is fast and very powerful with Hustle, but it comes very late, will require some grinding, and isn't terribly bulky.

Dwebble

Availability: Early
Stats: Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Its extremely slow and burdened by many weaknesses, but it has a solid STAB combo, a great ability in Sturdy, and a useful sweeping tool in Shell Smash later on in the game.

Ferroseed

Availability: Late-Mid
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Ferroseed has great defenses, but comes somewhat late and it is extremely slow.

Gothita

Availability: Early-Mid
Stats: Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Gothita comes fairly early, but it is[it is] rather slow, has only modest power, and is outdone in most ways by Sigilyph.

Kilnk Klink

Availability: Late-Mid
Stats: Average
Movepool: Shallow
Additional Comments: Gear Grind and Shift Gear are amazing moves, but Klinkit has late evolutions and comes somewhat late. It also lacks good physical moves to abuse Shift Gear aside from Gear Grind and Return.

Litwick

Availability: Late
Stats: High
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Litwick is very strong and grinds easily against the seventh Gym, but it has late evolutions and comes somewhat late.

Mienfoo

Availability: Late
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Though it comes late and likely won't evolve until you are at the Elite Four's doorstep, but it Mienfoo has great Speed and offenses.

Mincinno

Availability: Early-Mid
Stats: Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Though very fast, but it is very frail,[comma] and its Attack is only modest.

Panpour

Availability: Beginning
Stats: Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Panpour is useful to beat the first Gym and learns a lot of moves, but its stats leave something to be desired.

Pansage

Availability: Beginning
Stats: Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Same as Panpour, pretty much.

Patrat

Availability: Beginning
Stats: Below Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Good early game,[comma] with a fast evolution and good moves such as Hypnosis and Crunch, but its stats are mediocre and its usefulness will fade quickly.

Roggenrola (with trade evolution)

Availability: Early
Stats: High
Movepool: Shallow
Additional Comments: Roggenrola is very strong and comes early, but it is incredibly slow and has quite a few weaknesses.

Sewaddle

Availability: Early
Stats: Average
Movepool: Shallow
Additional Comments: Sewaddle comes early,[comma] and learns pretty powerful moves,[comma] and has decent stats, but it has a bad type combination,[comma] and needing a friendship evolution is annoying.

Snivy

Availability: Starter
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Shallow
Additional Comments: Snivy comes very early because it's a starter. Comes very early as it is a starter. Though very fast and decently bulky, has decent bulk, but it has poor type coverage and mediocre offenses. However, it is saved somewhat lategame by Coil, which makes it pretty amazing against some of the last fights.

Solosis

Availability: Early-Mid
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Solosis comes fairly early. It is extremely powerful but very, very slow.

Terrakion

Availability: Late
Stats: High
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Terrakion comes extremely late and needs grinding, but it is fast and incredibly potent with high Attack and an excellent combination of STABs that make it very useful against the final fights.

Tirtouga

Availability: Mid-Game
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: It is very slow and is riddled with weaknesses, but it comes fairly early at a good level and it pretty powerful offensively. Tirtouga makes a good HM mule and is a dangerous sweeping threat with Shell Smash.

Vanillite

Availability: Mid-Game
Stats: Average
Movepool: Shallow
Additional Comments: Vanillite comes mid-game and has very good Special Attack, but it has a lot of weaknesses and poor type coverage.

Venipede

Availability: Early
Stats: Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: A bit weak until its final evolution, and it Venipede doesn't have very good defenses, but Scolipede, its evolution, just some more clarity is fast and can hit very hard with STAB Megahorn.

Virizion

Availability: Late

It should be noted that the in-game Petilil trade is only available in Black in exchange for a Cottonee and it's reversed in White, as otherwise Petilil are White-exclusive and Cottonee are Black-exclusive.

It also may or may not be worth mentioning the Basculin trade in Driftveil; Black just gets an normal (not sure about IVs) Adamant red-stripe form with Reckless, while White players get an Adamant blue-stripe form with the trade-exclusive Rock Head, giving it a recoil-less Take Down and later Double-Edge.

K I got the next one, should be done by tonight :)

EDIT: I lied, I'll try to finish it tomorrow xD

Introduction

The best Pokemon is one
that is obtained at the start of the game, can (remove space, there was an extra space) OHKO enemies off the bat, and loses only loses only 1 HP when damaged.

Those will be put in the High tier. Very inefficient Pokemon will be put in the Low tier. Pokemon 1 HP when damaged. He also learns every HM, heals himself automatically, and has some neat ability to top it off. Such a Pokemon doesn't exist, of course, but this means that Pokemon closer to this ideal are the best. that are neither efficient nor inefficient—for example, Pokemon who have an initial downside but can eventually perform as well as High tiered ones—are put in Middle tier.

Pokemon are graded based on five factors: availability, raw stats, movepool, typing, and match-ups (add hyphen) against major in-game opponents battles. Availability is a measure of how easy it is to obtain the Pokemon, and it ranges from very low (gift Pokemon) to very high (common "tall grass" Pokemon). It also takes into account the part of the game at which you are able to get the Pokemon. For example, a Pokemon could be extremely good, but he would be worthless if you get him after every major battle. Raw stats affect the Pokemon's ability to KO others and to take hits in-game. Obviously, you want Pokemon with great stats, since that means they can easily KO many other Pokemon without fainting.

A Pokemon's movepool is the variety of attacks the Pokemon learns. Does he need a lot of TMs to have a good moveset? Can he learn a lot of HMs to help you navigate in the overworld? Does he learn powerful attacks of his own type? Although TMs are reusable in Black and White, having good TM compatibility and level-up moves are still of great importance.

Typing and match-ups (add hyphen) go hand in hand. The optimal typing both gives a Pokemon both STAB on useful attack types and leaves it with little to few or no weaknesses. If a Pokemon has is a dual typing type, his typing should complement him both it offensively and defensively.

Speed runs are often segmented and recorded while manipulating luck through resets; these aim for the absolute fastest on-screen time, but the real time spent on them is much, much greater. If you want to play through the game in a <remove space>relatively low time frame, then you’re looking for an efficient run.

A team is actually the most efficient (in terms of utility per team <remove space>member) if it only consists of a single member. This tier list will assume a team size of around three or four Pokemon, however, as otherwise the list would be extremely centralized around starters and early-game Pokemon—everything wouldn't be worth the effort.

High Tier

Archen

Availability: Mid-Game
Stats: High
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Available fairly early on, Archen has excellent offensive stats and a great movepool. Its evolution has insane Attack and Speed stats and will rip through most in-game opponents with STAB Acrobatics alone.

Cobalion

Availability: Late
Stats: High
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Though it comes coming late, Cobalion is at the high level of 42, which should be slightly above your team average by that point. Its typing is excellent defensively, leaving it with many resistances and only a few weaknesses., (add period, remove comma) and It is fast, fairly strong, and learns Swords Dance not too long after you get it, backed by reliable STAB attacks. It is capable of tearing through most of the late-game fights by itself.

Darumaka

Availability: Early-Mid
Stats: High
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Darumaka comes early with the ability Hustle, which makes its STAB Fire-type attacks obscenely powerful. Couple this with its evolution's huge Attack stat and and Sheer Force, which boosts the power of its most powerful STAB attacks Fire Punch and Flare Blitz, and you have a complete monster on your hands. It has enough Speed to outpace most of the game's enemies, decent bulk afforded by its great HP, and a good movepool.

Drilbur

Availability: Early
Stats: High
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Excellent Attack and good Speed stats combined with <remove space>a useful typing, Drilbur gets most if not all of its good moves (including <remove space>Swords Dance) by level-up, and its evolution gains a ton of resistances. <remove space>It is very useful versus the late-game (add hyphen) bosses.

Joltik

Availability: Late-Mid
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Though Joltik comes somewhat late, it grinds easily against the Gym that will soon follow. Great Speed, good Special Attack, a useful STAB combination, and Compoundeyes Thunder make it very helpful throughout the rest of the game.

Lillipup

Availability: Beginning
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Lillipup comes very early and is extremely good early game <remove space>with good Attack and early access to Take Down.

Additional Comments: Probably the best of the few obtainable <remove space>Water-typesTake Down. It also learns Crunch and elemental Fangs for coverage, has fast evolutions, and is fairly bulky. Although it loses a bit of its luster near the end, it remains a very useful Pokemon throughout the entire game. Oshawott has a great movepool, good stats, and does well against most of the Gyms.

It should be noted that there is a Petilil with good IVs and an excellent nature that can be obtained through
an easy trade in Nacrene City fairly early on. (You will need to cough up a Cottonee.)

Sandile

Availability: Early
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: It comes fairly early and possesses a useful STAB combination with just enough Attack and Speed to back it up. Perhaps its most useful trait is the ability Moxie—with it, Sandile's attack will be raised every time it KOes something, which makes it a deadly threat that can solo most trainers, particularly ones with fuller rosters such as the Elite Four.

Additional Comments:
Sigilyph starts off strong and stays strong until the very end.

Additional Comments: Fairly bulky and very strong
, Tepig has a good combination of STABs and great TM compatibility, and is useful against most of the Gyms. Available as a starter.

Timburr (with Trade Evolution)

Availability: Early
Stats: High
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Its level-up movepool is excellent and it has a very meaty Attack stat. Although it is slow, it has the bulk to survive most attacks. Fighting-types are generally very useful in Black and White, anyway.

Timburr (no Trade Evolution)

Availability: Early
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Gurdurr is still very bulky with Eviolite and still has a decent 105 base Attack stat to work off of.

Throh

Availability: Early
Stats: High
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: It is bulky enough to take almost any attack
,[comma] and has both decent Attack and a good movepool. It is a very reliable tank that is useful throughout the entire game. However, Throh is hard to find in Black due to it being a shaking grass only Pokemon.

Tympole

Availability: Early
Stats: Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Available early on, it has a good movepool, decent stats, and excellent Water / Ground typing after evolution, leaving it with only one weakness.

It is also available in a trade in Driftveil City with an ideal nature. (You'll need a Mincinno.)

Blitzle

Availability: Early
Stats: Average
Movepool: Shallow
Additional Comments:
Blitzle has very high Speed and has decent coverage, but it is very frail and only has modest offenses. While useful early game, it really loses its touch late game.

Cottonee

Availability: Early
Stats: Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments:
Although a good annoyer with Prankster and a variety of status moves, it has poor type coverage, mediocre power, and no real way to sweep.

Deerling

Availability: Late-Mid
Stats: Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: It has a good movepool and decent stats, but it comes late and is a bit frail.

Druddigon

Availability: Late
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments:
Though powerful and possessing a wide movepool, Druddigon comes late and has a very low Speed stat.

Ducklett

Availability: Mid-Game
Stats: Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments:
Ducklett is a useful HM mule and has decent stats and a good type combination, but HMs aren't as important in Black and White, and it's rather mediocre until it evolves. It also only comes around mid-game.

Durant

Availability: Late
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments:
Durant is fast and very powerful with Hustle, but it comes very late, will require some grinding, and isn't terribly bulky.

Dwebble

Availability: Early
Stats: Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Its extremely slow and burdened by many weaknesses, but it has a solid STAB combo, a great ability in Sturdy, and a useful sweeping tool in Shell Smash later on in the game.

Ferroseed

Availability: Late-Mid
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments:
Ferroseed has great defenses, but comes somewhat late and it is extremely slow.

Gothita

Availability: Early-Mid
Stats: Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments:
Gothita comes fairly early, but it is rather slow, has only modest power, and is outdone in most ways by Sigilyph.

Klink

Availability: Late-Mid
Stats: Average
Movepool: Shallow
Additional Comments: Gear Grind and Shift Gear are amazing moves, but
Klink has late evolutions and comes somewhat late. It also lacks good physical moves to abuse Shift Gear aside from Gear Grind and Return.

Litwick

Availability: Late
Stats: High
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments:
Litwick is very strong and grinds easily against the seventh Gym, but it has late evolutions and comes somewhat late.

Mienfoo

Availability: Late
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments:
Though it comes late and likely won't evolve until you are at the Elite Four's doorstep, Mienfoo has great Speed and offenses.

Mincinno

Availability: Early-Mid
Stats: Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments:
Though very fast, it is very frail, and its Attack is only modest.

Panpour

Availability: Beginning
Stats: Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments:
Panpour is useful to beat the first Gym and learns a lot of moves, but its stats leave something to be desired.

Pansage

Availability: Beginning
Stats: Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Same as Panpour, pretty much.

Patrat

Availability: Beginning
Stats: Below Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Good early game
, with a fast evolution and good moves such as Hypnosis and Crunch, but its stats are mediocre and its usefulness will fade quickly.

Roggenrola (with trade evolution)

Availability: Early
Stats: High
Movepool: Shallow
Additional Comments:
Roggenrola is very strong and comes early, but it is incredibly slow and has quite a few weaknesses.

Sewaddle

Availability: Early
Stats: Average
Movepool: Shallow
Additional Comments:
Sewaddle comes early, learns pretty powerful moves, and has decent stats, but it has a bad type combination, and needing a friendship evolution is annoying.

Snivy

Availability: Starter
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Shallow
Additional Comments:
Snivy comes very early because it's a starter. Though very fast and decently bulky, it has poor type coverage and mediocre offenses. However, it is saved somewhat lategame by Coil, which makes it pretty amazing against some of the last fights.

Solosis

Availability: Early-Mid
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments:
Solosis comes fairly early. It is extremely powerful but very, very slow.

Terrakion

Availability: Late
Stats: High
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments:
Terrakion comes extremely late and needs grinding, but it is fast and incredibly potent with high Attack and an excellent combination of STABs that make it very useful against the final fights.

Tirtouga

Availability: Mid-Game
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: It is very slow and is riddled with weaknesses, but it comes fairly early at a good level and it pretty powerful offensively.
Tirtouga makes a good HM mule and is a dangerous sweeping threat with Shell Smash.

Vanillite

Availability: Mid-Game
Stats: Average
Movepool: Shallow
Additional Comments:
Vanillite comes mid-game and has very good Special Attack, but it has a lot of weaknesses and poor type coverage.

Venipede

Availability: Early
Stats: Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: A bit weak until its final evolution,
Venipede doesn't have very good defenses, but Scolipede, its evolution, is fast and can hit very hard with STAB Megahorn.

Virizion

Availability: Late
Stats: High
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments:
Virizion comes late, but has great stats and a useful typing, although it is not overly useful against the final battles.

A team is actually the most efficient (in terms of utility per team <remove space>member) if it only consists of a single member. This tier list will assume a team size of around three or four Pokemon, however, as otherwise the list would be extremely centralized around starters and early-game Pokemon—everything wouldn't be worth the effort.

doesn't matter articles only use smogon hosted sprites when uploaded, and on the forums as long as people can read the name of the Pokemon it's supposed to be the sprite it currently shows isn't a problem.

The sprites are all off. There are a bunch of Arceus too. Someone beat me to it.

Also, throwing a good note for Tynamo out there - if you get lucky enough to find one, it is actually not too hard to train (albeit it requires a bit of babying), is excellent against the Flying gym, and is actually incredibly powerful as an Eelektross. Still in low tier, but be nicer to it.

Also, Tynamo itself is adorable. Probably too late for that though :/

Ok, sorry for the delay, working on a second check now, should be done sometime soon!

Introduction

The best Pokemon is one
that is obtained at the start of the game, can OHKO enemies off the bat, and loses only loses only 1 HP when damaged. It also learns every HM, heals itself automatically, and has some neat ability to top it off. Such a Pokemon doesn't exist, of course, but this means that Pokemon closer to this ideal are the best.

The goal of this in-game tier list is to recommend a select group of Pokemon for an efficient run-through of the game. Those will be put in
the High tier. Very inefficient Pokemon will be put in the Low tier. Pokemon that are neither efficient nor inefficient—for example, Pokemon who have an initial downside but can eventually perform as well as High-tiered (add hyphen) ones—are put in the Middle tier.

Pokemon are graded based on five factors: availability, raw stats, movepool, typing, and match-ups against major in-game opponents. Availability is a measure of how easy it is to obtain the Pokemon, and it ranges from very low (gift Pokemon) to very high (common "tall-grass" (add hyphen) Pokemon). It also takes into account the part of the game at which you are able to get the Pokemon. For example, a Pokemon could be extremely good, but he would be worthless if you get him after every major battle. Raw stats affect the Pokemon's ability to KO others and to take hits in-game. Obviously, you want Pokemon with great stats, since that means they can easily KO many other Pokemon without fainting, or at least taking repeated trips to a Pokemon Center.

Typing and match-ups go hand in hand. The optimal typing gives a Pokemon both STAB on useful attack types and leaves it with little to no weaknesses. If a Pokemon has a dual typing, it his typing should complement him both offensively and defensively. Typing also determines the major battles in which a Pokemon will be useful. (Major battles can range from Gym Leaders battles to Rival battles.) Therefore, it is important useful to use Pokemon with good type combinations that give them an advantage in most of the game's major battles.

Don't confuse an efficient run with a speed run. Speed runs are often segmented and recorded while manipulating luck through resets; these aim for the absolute fastest on-screen time, but the real time spent on them is much greater. If you want to play through the game in a relatively low time frame, then you’re looking for an efficient run.

A team is actually the most efficient (in terms of utility per team member) if it only consists of a single member. This tier list will assume a team size of around three or four Pokemon, however, as otherwise the list would be extremely centralized around starters and early-game Pokemon—everything else wouldn't be worth the effort.

BW In-Game Tiers
[head]

[page]

By Fireburn.

Introduction

The best Pokemon is one that is obtained at the start of the game, can OHKO enemies off the bat, and loses only loses only 1 HP when damaged.

Those will be put in the High tier. Very inefficient Pokemon will be put in the Low tier. Pokemon that are neither efficient nor inefficient—for example, Pokemon who have an initial downside but can eventually perform as well as High-tiered ones—are put in the Middle tier.

Pokemon are graded based on five factors: availability, raw stats, movepool, typing, and match-ups against major in-game opponents. Availability is a measure of how easy it is to obtain the Pokemon, and it ranges from very low (gift Pokemon) to very high (common "tall-grass" Pokemon).

Typing and match-ups go hand in hand. The optimal typing gives a Pokemon both STAB on useful attack types and leaves it with little to no weaknesses. If a Pokemon has a dual typing, it should complement him both important to offensively and defensively. Typing also determines the major battles in which a Pokemon will be useful. (Major battles can range from Gym Leaders battles to Rival battles.) Therefore, it is use Pokemon with good type combinations that give them an advantage in most of the game's major battles.

High Tier

Archen

Availability: Mid-Game
Stats: High
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Available fairly early on, Archen has excellent offensive stats and a great movepool. Its evolution has insane Attack and Speed and will rip through most in-game opponents with STAB Acrobatics alone.

Cobalion

Availability: Late
Stats: High
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Though it comes late, Cobalion is at the high level of 42, which should be slightly above your team average by that point. Its typing is excellent defensively, leaving it with many resistances and only a few weaknesses. It is fast, fairly strong, and learns Swords Dance not too long after you get it, backed by reliable STAB attacks. It is capable of tearing through most of the late-game fights by itself.

Darumaka

Availability: Early-Mid
Stats: High
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Darumaka comes early, and with the ability Hustle, which makes its physical attacks obscenely powerful.

Additional Comments: Excellent Attack and good Speed combined with a useful typing, Drilbur gets most, if not all, of its good moves(including Swords Dance) by level-up, and its evolution gains a ton of resistances. It is very useful versus the late-game bosses.

Joltik

Availability: Late-Mid
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Although Joltik comes somewhat late, it grinds easily against the Gym that will soon follow. Great Speed, good Special Attack, a useful STAB combination, and Compoundeyes Thunder make it very helpful throughout the rest of the game.

Lillipup

Availability: Beginning
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Lillipup comes very early and is extremely good early game with good Attack and early access to STAB Take Down.

Additional Comments: Probably the best of the few obtainable Water-types, Oshawott has a great movepool, good stats, and does well against most of the Gyms.

It should be noted that there is a Petilil with good IVs and an excellent nature that can be obtained through an easy trade in Nacrene City fairly early on.

However, Sawk is hard to find in White due to being a shaking grass only Pokemon.

Additional Comments: Fairly bulky and very strong, Tepig has a good combination of STABs and great TM compatibility, and is useful against most of the Gyms. It is available as a starter.

Timburr (with Trade Evolution)

Availability: Early
Stats: High
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Its level-up movepool is excellent and it has a very meaty Attack stat. Although it is slow, it has the bulk to survive most attacks. Fighting-types are generally very useful in Black and White, anyway.

Timburr (no Trade Evolution)

Availability: Early
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Gurdurr is still very bulky with Eviolite and still has a decent 105 base Attack stat to work with.

Throh

Availability: Early
Stats: High
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: It is bulky enough to take almost any attack, and has both decent Attack and a good movepool.

/
Basculin

Availability: Mid-Game
Stats: Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: It stats are only average and it comes only about mid-game, but it learns a lot of powerful attacks. It is also available in a trade in Driftveil City with an ideal nature. (You'll need a Minccino.)

Blitzle

Availability: Early
Stats: Average
Movepool: Shallow
Additional Comments: Blitzle has very high Speed and has decent coverage, but it is very frail and only has modest offenses. While useful early game, it really loses its touch late game.

Cottonee

Availability: Early
Stats: Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Although Cottonee is a good annoyer with Prankster and a variety of status moves, it has poor type coverage, mediocre power, and no real way to sweep.

Deerling

Availability: Late-Mid
Stats: Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: It has a good movepool and decent stats, but it comes late and is a bit frail.

Druddigon

Availability: Late
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Though powerful and possessing a wide movepool, Druddigon comes late and has a very low Speed stat.

Ducklett

Availability: Mid-Game
Stats: Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Ducklett is a useful HM mule and has decent stats and a good type combination, but HMs aren't as important in Black and White, and it's rather mediocre until it evolves. It also only comes around mid-game.

Durant

Availability: Late
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Durant is fast and very powerful with Hustle, but it comes very late, will require some grinding, and isn't terribly bulky.

Dwebble

Availability: Early
Stats: Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Its extremely slow and burdened by many weaknesses, but it has a solid STAB combo, a great ability in Sturdy, and a useful sweeping tool in Shell Smash later on in the game.

Ferroseed

Availability: Late-Mid
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Ferroseed has great defenses, but comes somewhat late and it is extremely slow.

Gothita

Availability: Early-Mid
Stats: Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Gothita comes fairly early, but it is rather slow, has only modest power, and is outdone in most ways by Sigilyph.

Klink

Availability: Late-Mid
Stats: Average
Movepool: Shallow
Additional Comments: Gear Grind and Shift Gear are amazing moves, but Klink has late evolutions and comes somewhat late. It also lacks good physical moves to abuse Shift Gear aside from Gear Grind and Return.

Litwick

Availability: Late
Stats: High
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Litwick is very strong and grinds easily against the seventh Gym, but it has late evolutions and also comes somewhat late.

Mienfoo

Availability: Late
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Though it comes late and likely won't evolve until you are at the Elite Four's doorstep, Mienfoo has great Speed and offenses.

Mincinno

Availability: Early-Mid
Stats: Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Though very fast, it is very frail, and its Attack is only modest.

Panpour

Availability: Beginning
Stats: Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Panpour is useful to beat the first Gym and learns a lot of moves, but its stats leave something to be desired.

Pansage

Availability: Beginning
Stats: Average
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: Same as Panpour, pretty much.

Patrat

Availability: Beginning
Stats: Below Average
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: Good early game, with a fast evolution and good moves such as Hypnosis and Crunch, but its stats are mediocre and its usefulness will fade quickly.

Roggenrola (with trade evolution)

Availability: Early
Stats: High
Movepool: Shallow
Additional Comments: Roggenrola is very strong and comes early, but it is incredibly slow and has quite a few weaknesses.

Availability: Early
Stats: Average
Movepool: Shallow

Snivy

Availability: Starter
Stats: Above Average
Movepool: Shallow
Additional Comments: Snivy comes very early because it's a starter. Though very fast and decently bulky, it has poor type coverage and mediocre offenses. However, it is saved somewhat lategame by Coil, which makes it pretty amazing against some of the last fights.

Solosis

Availability: Early-Mid
