Ursaring (GP 1/2)

[Overview]

Ursaring looks good at first glance, then seems bad after a second look, but rarely disappoints trainers on the battlefield. The ferocious bear has the power of the Death Star thanks to his combination of Swords Dance and Guts. He also has perfect coverage with just three moves. He is capable of using two great abilities that complement his role as a physical sweeper perfectly. However, his lack of speed and bulk severely hampers his effectiveness, so it may seem as though Ursaring is forced into a niche. He's also often compared to Swellow, a fellow Guts abuser who has a higher Speed and access to dual STAB. Lastly, with a variety of Fighting-types in the tier, Ursaring often has a hard time finding an opportunity to switch in. Overall, Ursaring is a mixed bag, and when played to his strengths, has no problem sweeping teams.

[SET]
name: Quick Feet
move 1: Facade
move 2: Close Combat
move 3: Crunch
move 4: Swords Dance / Protect
item: Toxic Orb
ability: Quick Feet
nature: Jolly
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This set combines Ursaring's access to a great ability in Quick Feet with his amazing Attack. Thanks to these two attributes, he is both quick and strong. Facade is Ursaring's main STAB move, and it works well with Toxic Orb. Close Combat hits Steel- and Rock-types who switch in, predicting a Facade, for super effective damage. Crunch serves as a way to hit Ghost-types who are immune to the rest of this set. With a Swords Dance under his belt and the Speed boost from Quick Feet, not much can stand in Ursaring's way. However, with his poor defenses, he can't always get off a Swords Dance, so Protect is an acceptable alternative to ensure his Orb activates.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

A Jolly nature is recommended to outspeed everything in RU up to unboosted base 108 Speed Pokemon. Toxic Orb is the only acceptable choice, because Quick Feet doesn't nullify the Flame Orb's effect of lowering Ursaring's Attack. Quick Feet is the obvious choice of ability to allow Ursaring to outspeed and KO a majority of the tier.

Cofagrigus is an indirect counter to this set; its Mummy ability will erase Ursaring's Quick Feet, allowing him to be outsped by a majority of the tier. Even with the Quick Feet boost, Ursaring is still very slow, so almost every Choice Scarf user in the tier (and even some naturally fast Pokemon) can outspeed and KO him. Choice Scarf Medicham can outspeed even after a Quick Feet boost and threaten Ursaring with its STAB Hi Jump Kick. Durant naturally outspeeds Ursaring, resists two of Ursaring's three attacking moves, takes Ursaring's hits with its high Defense, and sets up on him. Wynaut is a good teammate because it shares defensive synergy with Ursaring and can allow him to set up through Encore. Wynaut can also get rid of Pokemon with a Choice Scarf who would otherwise give Ursaring trouble. Paralysis support for Ursaring is appreciated, as he is not particularly fast. Dual screens support lets Ursaring set up with ease. Entry hazard support is very helpful, allowing Ursaring to nab OHKOs and 2HKOs that he wouldn't be able to get otherwise.

[SET]
name: Village Crusher
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Facade / Return
move 3: Close Combat
move 4: Crunch
item: Toxic Orb / Life Orb
ability: Guts
nature: Jolly
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

As the name says, Ursaring can crush villages with brute force. This set is designed to use the natural raw power of Ursaring and mix it with the power that Guts and Swords Dance provide. Thanks to the boost from Guts and Toxic Orb, Facade hits everything but Rock-, Steel-, and Ghost-types hard. Return is an acceptable replacement for Facade and should only be used with Life Orb. Close Combat and Crunch serve to eliminate the aforementioned types.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Toxic Orb is the recommended item, working in tandem with Facade and Guts nicely; however, a Life Orb may also be used for the decreased recoil. There is also the chance that Ursaring can receive a status ailment by other means than by an Orb, further adding to his massive strength. Flame Orb is also an option if Ursaring is going to be staying in for a while, because unlike Toxic Orb, Flame Orb will not accrue in residual damage over time. A Jolly nature with maximum Speed allows Ursaring to outspeed most walls in RU and eliminate them with a powerful attack.

Cofagrigus indirectly walls this set, replacing Ursaring's Guts with Mummy, allowing most walls to survive an attack with ease and either stall Ursaring out or take advantage of his pitiful defenses and KO him. If Ursaring is using Life Orb, Cofagrigus can halve Ursaring's Attack with Will-O-Wisp, as Ursaring will not be protected from being burned since it will not be poisoned. Virtually any Pokemon could then proceed to switch in and eliminate Ursaring.

Any Pokemon with as much prowess at eliminating physical walls as Ursaring likes having physically-oriented Pokemon as teammates to take advantage of the lack of physical walls. Ursaring gets rid of Pokemon such as Alomomola and Steelix, allowing teammates such as Electivire, Durant, and Entei to sweep. Ursaring also has a hard time setting up, so Wynaut is a recommended teammate. Wynaut is recommended because it traps opposing Pokemon into a non-attacking move via Encore, allowing Ursaring to switch in and set up with Swords Dance. Reflect and Light Screen are also good ways to allow Ursaring to switch in and set up. Two more things that Ursaring needs are paralysis support and entry hazards. The former allows Ursaring to outspeed and KO more than just the slower walls, while the latter allows him to score some crucial OHKOs and 2HKOs.

[Other Options]

Ursaring has a plethora of other options, but a majority of them are not viable simply because they are outclassed or provide no useful coverage. He is capable of using many boosting moves, such as Belly Drum and Work Up, but they are all outclassed by Swords Dance in some way. Hammer Arm, Low Kick, and Superpower are all bested by Close Combat and should never be used. Ursaring has perfect coverage in three moves, so many of his other options are not viable. Some examples are the elemental punches, Stone Edge, and Seed Bomb. Night Slash could be used over Crunch to hit Ghost-types if you feel very lucky about your critical-hit ratio.

[Checks and Counters]

As stated before, Cofagrigus is an indirect counter to Ursaring, as it can remove Ursaring's ability, making the bear Pokemon useless. Ursaring is very frail, so most priority will KO him or do heavy damage. Hitmonlee can deliver a swift, powerful Mach Punch to deal heavy damage. A Sucker Punch from Honchkrow also dices up Ursaring. Even with a Quick Feet boost, Ursaring is still relatively slow, so any base 108 Speed Pokemon or higher can outspeed naturally and KO him. Virtually any Pokemon with a Choice Scarf and Speed investment can outspeed him as well and end the razing of their villages. Sceptile and Choice Scarf Rotom-F are good examples of this, outspeeding and KOing him with their powerful STAB attacks. Take note, however, that most Pokemon who are fast enough to outspeed Ursaring are generally too frail to survive a STAB Facade, and most Pokemon who are bulky enough to survive an attack are often too weak to deal very much damage to Ursaring; if Ursaring sets up, you will lose at least one Pokemon.

Make Toxic Orb the only slash on the second set, and slash Protect with Swords Dance on the first set.

It takes 4 turns to make any difference, and Ursaring probably won't be living that long or staying in that long. Flame Orb is inferior in almost every way. You should put it in the AC, trust me, QC will agree with me.

fine

Edit: and this is finished

Ursaring with jolly nature and max speed only hits 342 after quick feet, thats only enough to outspeed base 105's. Also why do you keep saying hes not very fast in the Quick Feet set base 106 speed is pretty damn fast.

because even though he's relatively fast after the quick feet boost ursaring is still prone to being revenged by even non-scarf mons

I would put a ResTalk set in the OO. It's a mini-4th Gen-Heracross that way with Guts and Rest gives you extended longevity.

^ He's not that frail... 90/75/75 is still decent if you max HP and the power is good. Still, it's an OO mention. It can have failing points, and it probably should have a few or it shouldn't be in OO.

There are a lot of unnecessary spaces between some words. I did the best I could to find them and fix them in my revision. I did not note where every double space happened since it would make it harder to read.

As stated before, Cofagrigus is an indirect counter to Ursaring, as it can remove Ursaring's ability, making the bear Pokemon rather useless. Ursaring is very frail, so most priority attacks will either KO him or do heavy damage. Hitmonlee can deliver a swift, powerful Mach Punch to deal heavy damage,(comma) and a.(period) A Sucker Punch from Honchkrow also dices up Ursaring. Take note, however, that most Pokemon who are fast enough to outspeed Ursaring are generally too frail to survive a STAB Facade, and most Pokemon who are bulky enough to survive an attack are often too weak to deal very much damage to Ursaring; in most cases, if Ursaring sets up, you will lose at least one Pokemon.

Implemented the check, this is ready for upload if someone wants. I took out the "like the first set" part that Engineer added, fyi.

[Overview]

Ursaring looks good at first glance, then seems bad after a second look, but rarely disappoints trainers on the battlefield. The ferocious bear has the power of the Death Star thanks to his combination of Swords Dance and Guts. Moreover, he has perfect coverage with just three moves. He is also capable of using two great abilities that complement his role as a physical sweeper perfectly. However, his lack of speed and bulk severely hampers his effectiveness, so it may seem as though Ursaring is forced into a niche. He's often compared to Swellow, a fellow Guts abuser who has higher Speed and access to dual STABs, which may make him seem inferior. Lastly, with a variety of Fighting-types in the tier, Ursaring often has a hard time finding an opportunity to switch in. Overall, Ursaring is a mixed bag, and when played to his strengths, has no problem sweeping teams.

[SET]
name: Quick Feet
move 1: Facade
move 2: Close Combat
move 3: Crunch
move 4: Swords Dance / Protect
item: Toxic Orb
ability: Quick Feet
nature: Jolly
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This set combines Ursaring's access to a great ability, Quick Feet, with his amazing Attack. Thanks to these two attributes, he is both quick and strong. Facade is Ursaring's main STAB move, dealing large amounts of damage when coupled with Toxic Orb. Close Combat hits Steel- and Rock-type Pokemon who switch in, predicting a Facade, for super effective damage. Crunch serves as a way to hit Ghost-types who are immune to the rest of this set. With a Swords Dance under his belt and the Speed boost from Quick Feet, not much can stand in Ursaring's way. However, with his poor defenses, he can't always get off a Swords Dance, so Protect is an acceptable alternative to ensure his Toxic Orb activates.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

A Jolly nature is recommended to outspeed everything up to unboosted base 108 Speed Pokemon. Toxic Orb is the only acceptable item choice, because Quick Feet doesn't nullify the Flame Orb's effect of lowering Ursaring's Attack. Quick Feet is the obvious choice of ability, as it allows Ursaring to outspeed and KO a majority of the tier.

Cofagrigus is an indirect counter to this set; its Mummy ability will erase Ursaring's Quick Feet, allowing him to be outsped by a large number of Pokemon. Wynaut can also get rid of Choice Scarf Pokemon who would otherwise give Ursaring trouble. Paralysis support for Ursaring is appreciated, as he is not particularly fast; Dual Screens support lets Ursaring set up with ease. Entry hazard support is helpful as well, allowing Ursaring to nab OHKOs and 2HKOs that he wouldn't be able to get otherwise.

[SET]
name: Village Crusher
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Facade / Return
move 3: Close Combat
move 4: Crunch
item: Toxic Orb / Life Orb
ability: Guts
nature: Jolly
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

As the name says, Ursaring can crush villages with brute force. This set is designed to use Ursaring's natural raw power and mix it with the power that Guts and Swords Dance provide. Thanks to the boost from Guts and Toxic Orb, Facade hits everything but Rock-, Steel-, and Ghost-types hard. Return is an acceptable replacement for Facade and should only be used with Life Orb. Close Combat and Crunch serve to eliminate the aforementioned types, giving him perfect neutral coverage.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Toxic Orb is the recommended item, working nicely in tandem with Facade and Guts; however, a Life Orb may also be used for the decreased recoil. There is also the chance that Ursaring can receive a status ailment by means other than his Orb, adding further to his massive strength.

Cofagrigus indirectly walls this set; Mummy replaces Ursaring's Guts, allowing most walls to survive an attack with ease and either stall Ursaring out or take advantage of his pitiful defenses and KO him. If Ursaring is using Life Orb, Cofagrigus can halve Ursaring's Attack with Will-O-Wisp, as Ursaring will not be protected from being burned. Virtually any Pokemon could then proceed to switch in and eliminate Ursaring.

Any Pokemon with as much prowess at eliminating physical walls as Ursaring likes having physically oriented Pokemon as teammates to take advantage of the lack of physical walls. Ursaring gets rid of Pokemon such as Alomomola and Steelix, allowing teammates such as Electivire, Durant, and Entei to sweep. Ursaring has a hard time setting up, so Wynaut is an excellent teammate.

Ursaring has perfect coverage in three moves, so many of his other options, such as the elemental punches, Stone Edge, and Seed Bomb, are not viable. Night Slash could be used over Crunch to hit Ghost-types if you feel very lucky about your critical-hit ratio.
