Dodrio

[Overview]

Dodrio has always been a dangerous offensive threat in lower tiers thanks to its combination of good Speed and Attack, as well as two decent STABs in Normal and Flying. However, Dodrio's movepool is very limited, as it has access only to Normal-, Flying-, and Dark-type moves for coverage. Dodrio's horrendous abilities put it behind fellow Flying-types, such as Braviary or Swellow. Finally, Dodrio's bad defenses and weakness to Stealth Rock means it won't be sticking around too long.

[SET]
name: Choiced
move 1: Brave Bird
move 2: Return
move 3: Quick Attack
move 4: Pursuit / Toxic
item: Choice Band / Choice Scarf
ability: Early Bird
nature: Jolly/Adamant
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This is probably the best set Dodrio can run. With 110 base Attack and 100 base Speed, it can hit hard and fast. Brave Bird is its main STAB, hitting most foes in the tier for neutral damage with an amazing Base Power of 120. Return is a secondary STAB, free of recoil, allowing Dodrio to sweep late game, and hit Electric-types. Quick Attack is a good priority move to hit faster or boosted foes, especially if you are using Choice Band. However, Quick Attack is pretty much redundant when using Choice Scarf. Pursuit traps frail sweepers such as Jynx or Haunter, and KOes them, whereas Toxic cripples opposing walls, such as Golem or Regirock. Early Bird is the prefered ability as it's the only useful ability Dodrio has.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

A Jolly nature allows Dodrio to outspeed all Pokemon with base 95 Speed. and a Speed boosting nature, as well as tie with other base 100 Speed Pokemon; however, Adamant gives it a bit more power to break through bulky opponents such as Tangela more easily. Spinners are necessary because Dodrio is weak to Stealth Rock and it will be switching a lot. Wish passers help Dodrio heal any passive damage it may take. Dodrio struggles against Rock- and Steel-types, so partners such as Samurott, Whiscash, or Torterra (all of who benefit from the elimination of Grass-types) are welcomed. Fighting-types, such as Sawk and Throh, as well as Magnet Pull Probopass, can be good partners as they deal with the Pokemon Dodrio has trouble with. Dodrio really appreciates entry hazards, as they complement Dodrio's ability to force switches, so Pokemon that can set up Spikes, such as Cacturne and Garbodor, make good teammates. Rock- and Ground- types such as Regirock or Golem, are great partners due to the ability to take on common Dodrio's checks such as Rotom-S. This set suffers from status, so status absorbers such as Gurdurr or clerics like Lickilicky, make decent teammates.

[SET]
name: Taunt
move 1: Taunt
move 2: Brave Bird
move 3: Return
move 4: Roost
item: Sharp Beak/Life Orb
ability: Early Bird
nature: Jolly/Adamant
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Taunt sets Dodrio apart from other birds such as Swellow or Braviary. This set also focuses on making Dodrio more durable throughout the match thanks to Roost. Taunt stops status users from hampering Dodrio, and sweepers from setting up on Dodrio. Brave Bird is Dodrio's strongest move and its preferred attacking move. Return is a recoil-free secondary STAB and helps take down Electric-type Pokemon that resist Brave Bird. Roost is a great move, softening the passive damage caused by Stealth Rock, Brave Bird, and Life Orb recoil, thus extending Dodrio's lifespan and utility.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Life Orb gives Dodrio more power, but Brave Bird, Stealth Rock, and Life Orb recoil may cause Dodrio to get KOed, so Sharp Beak is usually the preferred item. The choice between Adamant and Jolly depends on whether you want Speed or power. Toxic can be used on this set to cripple walls and hamper stall teams, but take into account that Dodrio is not a Toxic staller as it has horrendous defenses, so don't try to stall anything.

Since this set doesn't pack as much power as the Choice Band set, it is more dependant on entry hazard support, making Garbodor, Glalie, and Cacturne great partners. Similar to the Choice Band set, Pokemon that take down Rock- and Steel-type Pokemon are good partners, as well as those who benefit from the removal of Grass-types, so Pokemon such as Gorebyss or Torterra, which can even set up against Dodrio's counters, are great teammates. As this set's purpose is survivability, Pokemon that take Ice-, Electric-, and Rock-type moves are really helpful, so partners like Quagsire, Whiscash, Golem, or Probopass, are great assets because they can wear down opponents with the support of Stealth Rock or Toxic.

[Other Options]

Assurance, Faint Attack and Payback can hit Ghost- and Psychic-types for super effective damage, but their Base Power is too low to be of any use. Endeavor weakens a counter if Dodrio is at low health; since Dodrio has awful defenses, this situation may arise quite often, thus making Endeavor a useful move. Double-Edge is an option over Return if you want more power, and are willing to take the recoil. Steel Wing hits Rock-types for super effective damage, but it has little use otherwise.

[Checks and Counters]

Most Rock- and Steel-types, such as Golem, Regirock, and Probopass, can switch in on Dodrio with impunity, resisting both of its STAB moves and can KO Dodrio with their own STAB moves. Pokemon with high Defense, such as Torkoal or Weezing, can take Dodrio's attacks and threaten to burn it. Dodrio can also be revenge killed by faster foes, such as Swellow or Simipour, as well as by Choice Scarf users such as Rotom-S. Strong priority attacks, such as Absol's Sucker Punch, also KO Dodrio.

[Overview]
 • High Attack and Speed
 • Good STAB in Brave Bird
 • Access to utility moves like Roost and Taunt
 • Low defenses with few resistances, but 2 immunities.
 • Shallow Movepool (Lack of coverage and U-Turn)
 • Stealth Rock Weakness
 • Bad abilities

[SET]
name: Choiced
move 1: Brave Bird
move 2: Return
move 3: Quick Attack
move 4: Pursuit/Toxic
item: Choice Band/Choice Scarf
ability: Early Bird
nature: Jolly/Adamant
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
 • With High 110 Base Atk and 100 Spe, it can hit hard and fast.
 • Brave Bird is a STAB with good coverage and power.
 • Pursuit traps ghost and psychic pokemon trying to switch out, while Quick Attack allow it to hit faster or scarfed foes, especially if running choice band.
 • Toxic is there to cripple pokemon who resist Dodrio's moves, such as Golem.
 • Knock Off to harm counters (mostly eviolite users like Rhydon) can be used on the last or third slot.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
 • Choice Scarf allow it to be an effective revenge killer, while Choice Band give him power to break through physical walls.
 • Jolly Nature allow it to outspeed base 95 pokemon with a positive nature as well as tying (at worst) with other base 100s
 • Needs rapid spin support due to SR weakness
 • Wisher helps since it will take a lot of residual damage from brave bird and SR
 • Struggles against Rock and Steel types, Dugtrio and Magneton are good partners.

[SET]
name: Taunt
move 1: Taunt
move 2: Brave Bird
move 3: Return
move 4: Roost
item: Sharp Beak/Life Orb
ability: Early Bird
nature: Jolly/Adamant
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
 • This sets focus on making dodrio more durable along the match.
 • Taunt distings Dodrio from other Flying- type fellows.
 • Taunt allows it to beat physical walls like Misdreavus, who is unable to touch Dodrio after taunt.
 • Roost to heal itself from SR and Brave Bird recoil.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
 • Toxic can be used to cripple walls, however, dodrio is not a toxic staller, pidgeot outclasses it at this (lol).
 • Jolly Nature allow it to outspeed base 95 pokemon with a positive nature as well as tying (at worst) with other base 100s
 • Needs rapid spin support due to SR weakness
 • Life Orb give more power, but the recoil from Brave Bird+LO will often make Dodrio kills himself, so Sharp Beak is the prefered option.
 • Partners who can take Rock, Ice and Electric moves are good partners, as well as others that can take down Steel- and Rock- types, especially if not using toxic.

[Other Options]
 • Assurance, Faint Attack and Payback are coverage moves for hitting ghost types, but have low base power.
 • Endeavor to weaken a counter if Dodrio's at low health. Baton Pass to scout but it's illegal with Brave Bird.
 • Double-Edge over Return for more power.
 • Steel Wing to hit Rock-types.
 • Baton Pass set is outclassed by others like Lopunny, due to Dodrio's frailty and lack of boosting options.

[Checks and Counters]
 • Most Rock- and Steel- types (like Regirock, Probopass or Golem) can switch in Dodrio's attacks with ease and set up or threaten Dodrio with their STAB moves.
 • Piloswine, Torkoal and Weezing have all high defense stat and can threaten with a burn or supereffective moves.
 • Strong priority such as Absol's Sucker Punch or Sneasel's Ice Shard can KO it most of the time.
 • Even considering Dodrio's high speed, there are some pokemon that can outspeed it if it's not holding a scarf, like Zebstrika, Kadabra, Cryogonal or the monkey trio.

[Dream World]
Dodrio gets Tangled Feet from Dream World, which is very situational and not very useful, so Early Bird should be picked first as it is the only somewhat useful ability.

Tested and added Taunt set, it's kinda useful to beat things like seismic toss miltank, stopping klinklang for setting up (obviously switch after taunting), and a lot of eviolite users such as Standard Misdreavus or non-scald frillish.

I always thought that a Revenge killer and Wallbreaker should have each set on its own but...I guess the QC Members will say something so yeah. So far it isn't really a problem.

Mention LO in QC.

EDIT: k sorry missed that

Can we mention something about entry hazards weakening switch-ins? I'd also like to see something about Pokemon that benefit from the removal of Grass-types. Alomomola, Sudowoodo, Torterra, and Whiscash are a few, but I'd like to see some more examples. I'd like to see something about a status absorber or cleric as well, because without Taunt, Dodrio is vulnerable to status moves. When you mention Pokemon that can get past Steel- and Rock-types, can you mention Fighting-types, Torterra, and even Magnet Pull Probopass. You can expand on this a lot more. The set comments on the Taunt set are slightly lacking as well. Can you find a way to bulk them out, and mention something about Return as well. Possibly say something about Roost helping restore damage from Brave Bird's recoil as well. Make some of these changes and we'll look at this again, but for now, it's not ready for GP checks. Thank you :)

Some of the content is very vague and does not really reflect the NU metagame and should be fixed. I've fixed most of the errors that I've noticed, but tennisace has told me that he will clarify tomorrow content-wise with what should and shouldn't be mentioned in the analysis. With some of these changes, I will stamp this check, but this analysis will require a 3rd GP check on this with tennis' changes.

DestinyUnknown, you didn't by any means correctly implement that check. Did you even read the analysis as you have it now? "Dodrio's horrendous abilities abilities, which let him outclassed by put him behind fellow Flying-types such as Braviary or Swellow."

As Steven listed at the top of his check, red text indicates a removal, while blue indicates an addition or replacement.

I was going to include a copypastable version, but I want you to go through every one of the changes and understand why they are being made. A few tips:
-Your sentences need to be shorter, don't just keep adding commas and continuing sentences. Use periods and make each sentence short and concise.
-The word "Pokemon" should always have the letter "p" capitalized.
-Parallelism, if you describe Dodrio as an "it", then throughout the analysis, you must use "it"
-Don't add random stuff just for the heck of it, it must make sense.
-Buff up your OO and Checks & Counters section. This should help out
-Just as StevenSnype said, be specific. Don't be vague.
-Read through the comments I've made, it will give you a better idea of what needs to be done. Make those changes.
-Read this.

Once you make all the changes that need to be made:

Roost is a great move, softening the passive damage caused by Stealth Rock, Brave Bird and Life Orb recoil, thus extending Dodrio's lifespan and utility.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Life Orb gives it Dodrio more power, but Brave Bird, Stealth Rock and Life Orb recoil may cause Dodrio to get KOed, so Sharp Beak is usually the preferred item. The choice between Adamant and Jolly depends on whether you want Speed or power. Toxic can be used in this set to cripple walls and hamper stall teams, but take into account that Dodrio is not a toxic staller as it has horrendous defenses, so don't try to stall anything because Dodrio will just die.

Since this set doesn't pack as much power as the Choice Band set, it depends more on entry hazard support, making Garbodor, Glalie, and Cacturne great partners. As this set's purpose is survivability, Pokemon that take Ice-, Electric-, and Rock-type moves are really helpful, so partners like Quagsire, Whiscash, Golem,(add comma) or Probopass, are great assets because they can wear down opponents with the support of Stealth Rock or Toxic.

[Other Options]

Assurance, Faint Attack and Payback can hit Ghost- and Psychic-types for super effective damage, but their Base Power is too low to be of any use. Endeavor weakens a counter if Dodrio is at low health; since Dodrio has awful Defense, this situation may arise quite often, thus making Endeavor a useful move. Double-Edge is an option over Return if you want more power, and are willing to take the recoil. Steel Wing, hits Rock-types for super effective damage, but it has little use otherwise. Dodrio has access to Baton Pass, but its too frail and doesn't have any boosting moves that it can pass on to its teammates. Thus it is outclassed by other Pokemon in the tier, such as Mr. Mime.

[Checks and Counters]

Most Rock- and Steel-types such as Golem, Regirock, and Probopass can switch in on Dodrio with impunity, resisting both STABs and killing it with their own STAB moves. Pokemon with high Defense such as Torkoal or Weezing can take Dodrio's attacks and threaten to burn. Dodrio can also be revenge killed by faster foes such as Swellow or Simipour, as well as by Choice Scarf users such as Rotom-S. Strong priority attacks, such as Absol's Sucker Punch,(add comma) also KO Dodrio.

Set comments, first set:

This is probably the best set Dodrio can run,[remove comma].[add period] With with 110 base Attack and 100 base Speed, it can hit hard and fast. Brave Bird is its main STAB, hitting most foes in the tier for neutral damage with an amazing Base Power of 120. Return is a secondary STAB, free of recoil, capable of sweeping allowing Dodrio to sweep late game and hitting Electric-types. Quick Attack is a good priority move to hit faster or boosted foe's foes, especially if you are using Choice Band. However, it's Quick Attack usefulness is pretty much redundant when using Choice Scarf. Pursuit traps frail sweepers,[add comma] like such as Jynx or Haunter,[add comma] and KOes them, whereas Toxic cripples opposing walls,[add comma] like such as Golem or Regirock. Early Bird is the prefered ability as it's the only useful ability Dodrio has.

AC, first set:

A Jolly Nature nature allows Dodrio to outspeed all Pokemon with base 95 Speed. and with a Speed boosting nature, as well as tie with other base 100s Speed Pokemon; however, Adamant gives it a bit more power to break through bulky opponents such as Tangela better more easily. Spinners are necessary because Dodrio is weak to Stealth Rock and it will be switching a lot. Wish passers help Dodrio heal from any passive damage it may take. Dodrio struggles against Rock- and Steel-types, so partners like such as Samurott, Whiscash,[add comma] or Torterra (all of who benefit from the elimination of Grass-types) are welcomed. Fighting-types, such as Sawk and Throh, as well as Magnet Pull Probopass,[add comma] can be good partners as they deal with the Pokemon Dodrio is weak to has trouble with. Dodrio really appreciates entry hazards, as they complement Dodrio's ability to force switches, so Pokemon that can set up Spikes, such as Cacturne and Garbodor,[add comma] make good teammates. Rock- and Ground- types,[add comma] such as Sudowoodo Regirock (no one uses Sudowoodo) or Golem,[add comma] are great partners too due to the ability to take on common Dodrio's checks like such as Rotom-S. This set suffers from status, so status absorbers such as Gurdurr or clerics like such as Lickilicky,[add comma] make decent teammates.

Set comments, second set:

Taunt sets Dodrio apart from other birds like such as Swellow or Braviary. This sets also focuses on making Dodrio more durable throughout the match thanks to Roost. [Overview]

Dodrio has always been a dangerous offensive threat in lower tiers thanks to its combination of good speed and attack, as well as two decent STABs types in Normal and Flying.
There also need to be spaces between the headings and paragraphs.

[SET]
name: Choiced

So Choice Scarf + other Choice item sets are referred to as Choice, and between slashes, always use a space before and after.

Done.

Sorry for the delay, I have had problems with my internet and exams and haven't been able to implement changes, sorry.

@WillSO: I mentioned Acupressure but one of the GP checks decided to remove it (that's what was commented at first about Baton Pass, but w/e)
