So as we step into March we see last month's usage stats come out. This is the last month before tier shifts happen again and we'll see then what could be coming and what could be going. I have the basic three stats in and in a little while I will add NU movesets, position changes and possible mons moving down. Discuss the usage for now.

No but I really am surprised that Vileplume has gotten that high. It's pretty good but jeez people lol. Ampharos's rise might also be due to the fact that people are copying Iron Maiden or are at least using the template of Ampharos as a screener. Agility isn't that bad either though, I need to test that out sometime! Kinda funny how Tangela is rising in usage while Leafeon, who is hard countered by Tangela, dropped whole 20 points.... JEEZ people its not that bad lol.

Why is mesprit still at number 1? I don't find it too incredibly useful, except for possibly as a lead. I guess it can also form a menagerie of roles kinda well, or at least well enough to compete with specialized pokemon (i.e. Lead Mesprit can set up SR just as often as Lead Golem does, while being able to mess with the opponent who might think its a screener set). Speaking of leads, I'm kinda glad to see both Golem at no.2 (!!!!!! f u butterfree) and Electrode at no. 5, which comes as a bit of surprise to me but w/e. It sets up rain which allows Gorebyss to be godly, considering how most of its counters are owned in rain after a smash.

Losing Miltank and Magmortar is HUGE imo, two extremely staple Pokemon leaving the tier is sure to leave its mark. The Pokemon we gain, however, is also extremely interesting: we get Rhydon back as our hard counter to the birds instead of having to rely on Golem, and we get Crustle as a Spiker/Stealth Rock setter, instead of having to rely on Garbodor. Once Crustle moves down I expect a large drop in Garbodor, but not a complete drop off though considering Toxic Spikes are going to continue being useful. Ludicolo and Sawsbuck give weather teams some new toys, but beyond that I don't see them making a large impact. Also, Linoone leaving isn't that big of a deal, or is it?

Crustle here will be very, very big. Rock STAB is kind of a big deal in NU, and Spikes are even bigger of a deal, especially as they're so hard to spin away. Shell Smash set isn't that great, but I can see it having a moderate success as a surprise "#2 set" type of thing.

Sawsbuck and Ludicolo means weather, and I mean, weather is really not that bad in NU as of now, and Ludicolo + Gorebyss + Mesprit + w/e means that rain will be ridiculously good. Thank god for some reason the usage of weather in both RU and NU ladder is disproportionately low considering how good they are. Perhaps the 'weatherless meta' identity of these two tiers play a role in that.

As for the loss, I've played with Miltank a lot recently, and Heal Bell is worth its weight in gold for balanced teams. Stealth Rock + Heal Bell in one mon is quite a niche. I'll miss it if it does leave, but we'll see what happens!

Would be glad to see Magmortar leave because that thing is the devil. It and Jynx can both go to RU just so I don't have to sit there and get repeatedly wrecked by them (ok seriously Jynx you can stop using that 100% accurate Lovely Kiss on Lickilicky and getting successive 3 turn sleeps ok thank you). Rhydon is really really cool and definitely underestimated offensively; whenever I used it in Round 0, I only used a fast 3 attacks + SR set or a Rock Polish set, and both will be really good imo. I don't understand why people use bulky variants when it has such a beautiful base 125 Attack and excellent coverage. :(

Linoone leaving is good. If that gets in an untimely Belly Drum and you don't have Tangela, good luck beating that shit. Ludicolo is interesting because we get a decent check to Gorebyss (I haven't calced anything yet but being 4x resistant to its main STAB and neutral to the accompanying ones, plus with access to STAB Giga Drain it should be pretty damn good) but at the same time I envision that it'll be really, really, really good with Rain Dance. Ludicolo is almost assuredly going to be very high in April stats if it does drop down, just because it's going to be incredibly useful both on defensive and offensive teams alike. Sawsbuck is similar but it's really fucking strong and fulfills Miltank's role as Sap Sipper...er. Even without Sun, it's fast and hits like a truck, with the same Speed and an extra Normal STAB over Leafeon. I don't imagine Leafeon will go higher at all if Sawsboss drops... Also because I forgot, fuck Miltank it can go to hell. Curse Miltank is really awful. :(

Crustle is by faaaaaaaaaaar my favorite potential drop. An actually good, offensive Spikes user with decent STAB moves and moderate bulk? Please and thank you! I imagine Crustle will also get a huge jump as soon as it arrives, as Spikes are amazing and Crustle actually threatens a lot of spinners with its STAB moves (sans Wartortle...?). It'll be pretty fucking awesome and I guarantee you that, at the very least, it'll be on nearly all of my teams.

As for changes in the metagame, expect even more Tangela, really. You're losing two prime Tangela switch-ins with Magmortar and Miltank, and Tangela handles Rhydon and Sawsbuck easily, as well as sort of threatening Crustle. I think that Rotom-S and other Scarf users might slowly start fading away to other, more interesting sets, as weather becomes more popular and Ludicolo becomes a solid check to Gorebyss. Offensive weather teams will wreck house for a little while until people start discovering good checks to them (Rain Dish, specially bulky Ludicolo with Giga Drain and perhaps a way to hit opposing Ludi would probably be one of the best checks to rain, though I'm not really sure about sun yet). Spikes will become easier to set with more users available, and Wartortle will probably rise in popularity as it's one of the few spinners that can easily handle Crustle. All just conjecture, but I love talking tier changes so yeah!

Well. Interesting to say the least! Crustle is going to be gigantic, and it's the first user of shell smash in this tier to not be weak to electric type attacks. I'm on my iPad ATM but I'll edit in more stuff ASAP

edit: Ok SO Magmortar is just a huge influence on NU, I'm really looking forward to giving stall of break now that one of the best wallbreakers in the tier is gone. Miltank is also awful, though Heal Bell is gonna be missed, and Curse Miltank is just a shit lol. Another thing - I'm really surprised to see Linoone go to RU, considering that the only types of team using are Screens more often than not. I guess that kinda just shows the popularity of Iron Maiden (or people realizing how good this thing is).

Weather is gonna be pretty much THE offensive playstyle for this round of stats, what with Ludicolo providing solid Rain support or Swift Swim (probably the best one in the tier behind LO Gorebyss). An offensive Grass-type with a way to get past Fire-types and Flying-types is also amazing. Rain Dish may also seem interesting if you're using a stallbreaker set or something of that nature. Swift Swim is probably just gonna be exponentially popular though due to its ability to take advantage of limited rain better. Sun might also see a small spike, or CB Sawsbuck will be spamming Horn Leech and Megahorn. Say, CB Jolly Megahorn 2HKOes Tangela after SR + 1 layer of Spikes. If that doesn't say something I don't know what does. SD Sawsbuck might also be amazing both in and out of sun.

Rhydon is gonna find some niche in NU but with all the new drops it's not gonna do nearly as well as it did r0 - Ludicolo murks it, Sawsbuck kills it, etc. and Tangrowth doesn't give a shit about any defensive Rhydon sets (hoping for the fall of Tangela and the rise of offensive Tangela-weak mons xD). Crustle outclasses it as a pure hazard setter, considering it gets Spikes and SR (plus Rock Blast to put any unsuspecting Glalie in its place). Speaking of Crustle, Sturdy + Lum Berry lets it basically act like a Golem with Spikes and without the ability to check birds as effectively. I mean sure a Braviary locked into a Return is bait maybe but aside from that the only way you're KOing birds is if you have Sturdy active.

it's amazing to me how stale the lead stats really are (or varied, i guess, if you really want to look at it that way) - i mean, you have two pretty common leads and then the whole rest of the metagame. i've seen maybe one electrode lead to every ten, twelve mesprit leads when i play... that's just idek.

not really surprised by any of the usage stats at all, though. vileplume is a boss and needs to be used more tbh, because it trolls a ton of pokemon. i wish people would be more creative like that and find those niche threats that absolutely wreck the meta! also subcm mesprit is still really cool, aside from that i really don't see why people are using it like natgeo said (reliable sr + paralysis, maybe? there are better pokemon to handle fighting-types...). thing is with gorebyss - maybe it's just me, but its pretty hard to get in a smash during rain, especially when playing offensive teams. it sounds godly on paper but ive never really been able to get it to work right (but then again i suck at weather teams too sooo idk lol).

I'm disappointed in the lack of Torterra, Regice, and Weezing in the usage stats. Seriously, I see no reason why Torterra is not in the top 10. While RP has trouble sweeping sometimes, CB hits like a truck, and tank/defensive sets are amazing as well. Regice, while it has a few flaws, is good enough to be quite useful in NU! It's a very effective Thunder Wave spreader and can check most special threats! Weezing's resistances and Defense are just too good to resist.

I'm glad Tangela, Scraggy, Vileplume, and Ampharos are starting to get the usage they deserve, though!

well, guess i done went and ran linoone one too many times, haven't i? seriously, this is bumming me out more than anything. i was playing him errwhere, he's just, like, the best late-game sweeper eva. but i guess thats that, i'll deal. another poke i'm a tad upset about is magmortar. its not like i really abused him or anything (hell, i don't even recall ever using him), but in my mind he's a cornerstone of nu. having him go up is like yanking dnite outta ou. sure, the metagame will adjust, people will find something else (back to 'mence, whatever), but there would just be a gap. it'll be extremely odd for me, that's all i'm saying.

on the up and up, i'm loving a.miltank going up (fuck you monocurse, you never fucking die) and b.crustle/rhydon going down. crustle's just a bro, and ss is sexyfun. not only that, with spinners sucking for the most part (run offensive cryogonal yo) crustle would be awesome as a set-hazards-and-die poke, and spinners/natu can't even try to switch in on account of his rock stab. fun times for me, i tell ya what. rhydon is, as mentioned, a hugely underestimated offensive threat. round 0 i was rockin' that sr+3 attacks guy, and he was just a pleasure to work with. sub+3 attacks and rp were pretty legit too, so i'm excited for him coming down.

ludi and sawsbuck are just sorta hitting a neutral chord for me. though i do appreciate ludicolo, and this may very well lead to a surg in rain teams, i sorta just am generally apathetic to it. dunno why. whatever, offensive tank ludi is sexy, so coolz for me. plus x4 resist to water means gorebyss is really kinda much easier to handle, so i'm game i guess. sawsbuck is just sorta gonna be another option over sd leafeon. both are just so similar in my eyes. if ya want normal stab+hitting steels, run sawsbuck, if ya want better bulk and utility, run leafeon. thats all that is to me. but i guess if cb sets become popular, then it may turn into something interesting...

bah real torterra runs earthquake/roar/stealth rock/synthesis. It is so good at coming in to stop anything that relies on stonequake for offense and phazing around to get some rocks damage in.
Also whats with cryogonal falling? Do people just not like to spin anymore? I mean the only ghosts in the tier that see use are haunter and misdreavus, and cryogonal can outspeed and ice beam haunter and outstall missy with toxic and recover. Seriously it's so easy to spin it's unbelievable.

That's modest, not Jolly with a Life Orb, if it's L.O it's easy enough to kill with a Scarfer, if it's Choiced, Miltank is a decent check for it.

Like I said, Miltank doesn't wall a LO set because for it to be considered a counter/wall against it it can switch into any move and force it out.

Followed up by: Timid LO Focus Blast : 76% - 89%

Using the absolute minimum damage numbers: Miltank switches into Fire Blast and it ends up with 78% after Lefties. Chances to kill with Focus Blast are huge, not to mention if hazards or you get average damage on either one you'll get the kill anyways.

IMO, I'll stick to Grumpig and Camerupt to take it on. Especially Grumpig, I started running a pretty good team with a Grumpig(T Wave / Heal Bell / Taunt / Psyshock) to beat Magmortar, Jynx, Cryo at at once 3 weeks ago and it works damn well with Wish support. Made me happy that a few days after I used the crap out Grumpig, tons more people were using it.

I run a set of Poision Jab/Pursuit/Sucker Punch/Taunt, although I might occasionally use Crunch over Poison Jab depending on how badly my team needs to get rid of Psychic types. It's ironic how Skuntank has extremely horrible coverage but still suffers from 4 move-slot syndrome :/

EDIT: As for Medicham possibly dropping to NU, I think people will handle it the same way people deal with Sawk sans Poison-types like Vileplume or Amoonguss. Missy FTW, I guess? Jolly Scarf Zen Headbutt Vs. Standard Missy : 33% - 39% 3HKO hits as hard as CB Sawk Stone Edge.
Though if even Scarf Sawk is falling out of favor for CB, then CB Medi will wreak shit up: CB Zen Vs. Missy: 49% - 58% O_O The best thing to handle it is Defensive Mesprit and it doesn't have reliable recovery. :(

I need bouffalant to drop so bad. That thing would eat tangelas for breakfast (almost literally) and nu could finally have a physical sweeper that reliably beats tang.

Emboar and rapidash.

Sawsbuck also has a good chance of dropping down and can beat tangela if it has sap sipper and can even run megahorn if you really dont like mesprit and tangela, or just dont care about steel types.

Edit: yeah sleep powder is a grass type move. woops

Sap Sipper gives +1 atk to Sleep Powder since its technically Grass-type. At least, it works that way for Spore.
