Lapras (QC 2/2) (GP 2/2)

[Overview]

<p>With respectable bulk and good abilities in Hydration and Water Absorb, Lapras can be a potent threat in the VGC 2012 metagame. A low base 60 Speed makes Lapras a good candidate for Trick Room teams, and it is able to work well in different weather conditions. While it does have these perks, Lapras also has its drawbacks; Lapras's paltry base 85 offensive stats mean that even a physical Latios will hit harder. Still, with the right team support, Lapras is a threat that must be prepared for.</p>

[SET]
name: Hydration
move 1: Surf
move 2: Thunder / Ice Beam
move 3: Rest
move 4: Protect
item: Absorb Bulb / Leftovers
ability: Hydration
nature: Calm
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

<p>This set takes advantage of Lapras's main attributes: bulk and access to Hydration. The idea is to come in while rain is up, take a Water-type attack to activate Absorb Bulb, and proceed to repeatedly attack with STAB rain-boosted Surf. The choice of Thunder or Ice Beam comes down to what you need Lapras to take out. Thunder has perfect accuracy in the rain, but leaves Lapras susceptible to Dragon-types. On the other hand, Ice Beam is an option to take out the Dragon-types that will stop Lapras, but it will allow rain teams to walk all over it.</p>

<p>The final two moveslots are the bread and butter of this set. Rest provides full recovery, and, in the rain, Lapras's sleep is cured at the end of the turn, courtesy of Hydration. Protect is standard in the VGC metagame to ease prediction and recover HP, if opting for Leftovers.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

<p>The above EV spread allows Lapras to only be 3HKOed by Zapdos's Discharge while being able to 3HKO back without an Absorb Bulb boost, or 2HKO with an Absorb Bulb boost. Politoed stands out as one of the best teammates for Lapras, as it sets up rain, indirectly keeping Lapras alive. Politoed can also help by using Surf to activate Lapras's Absorb Bulb. Other good teammates include Amoonguss, who resists Fighting-type attacks, as well as any other Pokemon that can take out Fighting-types.</p>

[SET]
name: Offensive
move 1: Blizzard / Ice Beam
move 2: Surf
move 3: Ice Shard / Thunderbolt
move 4: Protect
item: Ice Gem / Water Gem
ability: Water Absorb
nature: Modest / Timid
evs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

<p>While Lapras is typically seen playing a defensive role, this set aims to capitalize on an incorrect prediction and KO specific threats that counter Lapras. For example, Yache Berry Garchomp will survive a +1 Ice Beam from the defensive set; however, the same Garchomp is OHKOed by an Ice Gem-boosted Blizzard. Other examples include Dragonite (with Multiscale), Latios, and even Zapdos.</p>

<p>The other three moves come down to supporting the primary STAB option, Blizzard. Surf provides a secondary STAB move, taking out Fire-types that resist Blizzard as well as 2HKOing Tyranitar outside of sand. Ice Shard will help deal with Focus Sash users such as Chandelure; however, if they aren't problems, then Thunderbolt can be used to take out Water-types, most of whom would otherwise wall this set. Protect is, once again, standard in VGC.</p>

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

<p>This set has a couple of EV spreads that can be used. With a neutral nature and 252 Speed EVs, Lapras gets the jump on Gyarados and can KO with Thunderbolt. With a Timid nature and 252 Speed EVs, Lapras can Speed tie with Honchkrow, meaning that it will beat Pokemon such as Hitmontop and Metagross as well. Another option would be to use this set in Trick Room, with a Quiet nature and 0 Speed IVs. Lapras functions extremely well with both hail and Trick Room active.</p>

<p>Abomasnow is welcomed for this set, as it will allow Blizzard to hit with 100% accuracy. Reuniclus also can be a good partner if you are looking to use Lapras in hail and Trick Room simultaneously, as it is immune to hail, takes out Fighting-types, and can set up Trick Room effectively. Zapdos can help by taking out Water-types if you decide not to run Thunderbolt on Lapras. Once again, Amoonguss is a good partner to draw in Fighting-type attacks. Finally, Kingdra and Ludicolo are beneficial for this set, as their STAB Surf attacks will heal a lot of Lapras's HP due to Water Absorb. However, these two partners are really only beneficial if used in rain.</p>

[Other Options]

<p>Outside of what is listed, Lapras has a very shallow movepool. Perish Song can be used, but you have to make sure that you have at least one Pokemon left in reserve. Sheer Cold is somewhat viable due to Lapras's bulk, but is gimmicky at best and viable only on the Hydration set. Sing is another option as sleep is always beneficial, but its accuracy is shaky. Psychic can be used to stop Fighting-types, but the only notable OHKO that it gets is on Toxicroak, who can KO Lapras after a Fake Out anyways. One final change you could make is to use Scald or Hydro Pump as Lapras's STAB move. Scald would be beneficial for the Hydration set by providing burn support for the team, while Hydro Pump could help the offensive set by providing a more powerful STAB attack; the choice comes down to a matter of power versus accuracy.</p>

<p>There are two other item options Lapras can use. First, Sitrus Berry can be used to improve Lapras's longevity. Chople Berry is another option, helping against the Fighting-types that threaten Lapras. However, Pokemon such as Infernape and Terrakion can still OHKO it with Close Combat whether or not Lapras carries a Chople Berry.</p>

[Checks and Counters]

<p>Fighting-types, such as Hitmontop, Terrakion, and Infernape, are the best counters to Lapras, as they can all OHKO it with Close Combat. Water-types in general wall Lapras well, though they must be careful of Thunder or Thunderbolt; Rotom-W stands out among the bulky Water-types, as it is able to wall Lapras even if it has Thunder or Thunderbolt. Lapras depends very much on the weather for it to be successful; as such, Tyranitar stands out as a good counter—it gains a Special Defense boost in the sand and can hit Lapras hard with its STAB Rock Slide. Finally, in rain, Ludicolo and Abomasnow are major pains to Lapras, taking only neutral damage from any of its moves and KOing Lapras with a Grass-type attack.</p>

Absorb Bulb doesn't give the SpAtk boost if the Pokemon is immune to Water attacks, so you'd have to run Shell Armor or Hydration along with it. A bulkier spread could also be useful with Hydration and Rest on a Rain team and I think Perish Song should be mentioned as you can use it to take out your opponent's last two Pokemon.

-What exactly are you planning to outrun that you need 252 Speed in Lapras? Unless there is some sort of specific threat, I'd say it's probably better to move it to 252 HP.

-Blizzard actually will NOT OHKO Pokemon such as Zapdos and Latios, due to the attack being multitarget in doubles, reducing the damage to 75% of normal.

-Add Pokemon that run Surf as partners, as they can help heal Lapras

-Add that most Fighting Types can easily destroy Lapras in counters.

Also, you're completely missing the "Other Options" portion of the analysis.

I was going to add a bulkier support set, the only problem with that is Lapras really doesn't have much for support moves outside of Hail (which there would be no reason to use that with the presence of Abomasnow)

I ran those calcs with Ice Gem, just forgot to switch the items. (Facepalm) With the correction on Absorb Bulb, Ice Gem would become the top item, and those would OHKO.

I think the other options needs a lot of looking at. I can only echo the sentiment, of moving the EV's out of Speed, and getting it into Bulk. That's one of Lapras' big appeals in my opinion, so I think you're wasting it by now bulking up that part of his spread. Even the nature could be something more defensively minded, to keep lapras around for longer.

I could go on, but you need to consider the fighing weakness, you don't seen to mention any partners that can counter these. I think you need to spend a lot more time thinking about partners for Lapras in general, as the analysis is really lacking here.

Yeah, I was in the process of updating as you posted that :P Now that I have the sets up I'll be working more on the teammates and counters as well as the other options.

EDIT: Updated the teammates and counters and the other options.

Agreeing with Dozz in that you need to think about partners; stuff that can draw away attacks (Amoonguss with Rage Powder, Lightningrod users, etc) would work really well. Remember that teammates should go in Additional Comments (which you need to add on the first set). This really needs a lot more added to it, and I'd like to see it written up before I make any further changes or QC approve it.

Offensive Set said:
- Absorb Bulb works well due to Lapras having immunity to Water-type attacks
This needs to be removed, as Absorb Bulb is no longer on the set. Also, the Other Options section right after that point should go after Additional Comments, as the AC section is part of that set.

A number of things to fix here, I'll go over them in order:

-mention about Protect in the Hydration set's Set Comments
-likewise, mention about Ice Beam and Thunderbolt's relevance in the Offensive set's comments
-State that it's specifically an Ice Gem Blizzard that will be KOing Garchomp through Yache, Multiscale Dragonites, Zapdos, and Latios

-mention Sitrus Berry either in Offensive set's AC, or in the OO section
-add Chople Berry into OO
-it's spelt "Perish Song"
-remove Thunder from OO, since it was in the Hydration set
-add Scald and Hydro Pump as alternate Water-type moves
-add Sing into OO, while the accuracy is awful, sleep status is still sleep status, which can be good for a gamble

-the last part is supposed to be checks and counters, so most of the points with regards to Lapras's teammates should be moved into the AC of the appropriate movesets
-in addition, add Rotom-W in as a counter
-I would sort of say Tyranitar counts as a check, as Rock Slides do a large amount of damage and have a chance to flinch, while Sandstorm allows Tyranitar to take Lapras's Special Attacks
-mention that Water-types in general will wall Lapras in general if it does not run Electric-type moves

R Inanimate echoed most of what I was going to say about this analysis, but I'd just give a good mention to Ludicolo in checks and counters. It either resists or is neutral to every move listed, has great special bulk to tank hits and can simultaneously beat you + recover off all damage you inflict to it with Giga Drain.

Sorry, missed another thing.
-for the Hydration set, mention something about the EV spread in the AC
-For the Offensive set's AC, the EVs talk about Modest or Timid 252 Speed, but the set has been changed to have 252 HP now. So be sure to change the comments about its EVs.

after that, QC 1/2

Slipped my mind, but give Abomasnow a mention in counters as it's in the same boat as Ludicolo. Once that's done and R Inanimate's changes are put in,

fix the first set where you say "ev's:" to make it say "evs:"

be sure to put spaces between the headers and the paragraph itself

checks & counters not counters & checks

Note that there shouldn't be spaces right after the <p> tags and right before the </p> tags. I took them out but I didn't show that explicitly in the markup so yeah!

Reuniclus is immune to hail, takes out Fighting-types, and can set up Trick Room effectively. Zapdos can help by taking out Water-types if you opt out of Thunderbolt on Lapras. Once again, Amoonguss is a good partner to draw in Fighting-type attacks. Finally, Kingdra and Ludicolo are beneficial for this set, as their STAB Surfs will heal a lot of damage from LaprasLapras's HP due to Water Absorb. However, these two partners are really only beneficial if used in rain.</p>

[Other Options]

<p>Outside of what is listed, Lapras has a very shallow movepool. Perish Song can be used, but you have to make sure that you have at least one Pokemon left in reserve. Sheer Cold is somewhat viable due to Lapras's bulk, but it is very gimmicky at best and is best runused on the Hydration set. Sing is another option as sleep is always beneficial, but its accuracy is shaky. Psychic can be used to stop Fighting-types, but the only notable OHKO isthat it gets is on Toxicroak, who can KO Lapras after a Fake Out. One final change you could make is to use Scald or Hydro Pump as Lapras's STAB move. Scald would be beneficial for the Hydration set, by providing burn support for the team. Hydro Pump could help the offensive set, by providing a more powerful STAB attack, but the choice comes down to power versus accuracy.</p>

<p>There are two other item options Lapras can use. Firstly, Sitrus Berry can be used to improve Lapras's longevity. Chople Berry is another option, helping against the Fighting-types that threaten Lapras. However, Pokemon such as Infernape and Terrakion can still OHKO with Close Combat.</p>

[Checks and Counters]

<p>Fighting-types, such as Hitmontop, Terrakion, and Infernape, work asare the best counters to Lapras, as they can all OHKO with Close Combat. Water-types in general all wall Lapras well, though they must be careful of Thunder or Thunderbolt. Rotom-W stands out among the bulky Water-types, as it is able to wall Lapras even if it has Thunder or Thunderbolt. Also, to be successful, Lapras is very dependent on the weather to succeed; a. As such, Tyranitar stands out as a good counter. I; it will gain a Special Defense boost in the sand and can hit Lapras with its STAB Rock Slide. Finally, in rain, Ludicolo and Abomasnow are major pains to Lapras, taking only neutral damage from any of its moves and KOing with Giga DrainLapras with a Grass-type attack.</p>

[Overview]

<p>With respectable bulk and good abilities in Hydration and Water Absorb, Lapras can be a potent threat in the VGC 2012 metagame. Base 60 Speed makes Lapras a good candidate for Trick Room teams, and it is able able to work in different weather conditions. While it does have these perks, Lapras also has its drawbacks. Lapras's base 85 offensive stats mean that a physical Latios will hit with more power. Still, with the right team support, Lapras is a threat that must be prepared for.</p>

move 2: Thunder / Ice Beam
move 3: Rest
move 4: Protect
item: Absorb Bulb / Leftovers
ability: Hydration
nature: Calm
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

<p>This set takes advantage of Lapras's main attributes: bulk and access to Hydration. The idea is to come in while rain is up, take a Water-type attack to activate Absorb Bulb, and then abuse a STAB rain-boosted Surf. The choice of Thunder or Ice Beam comes down to what you need Lapras to take out. Thunder has perfect accuracy in the rain, but leaves Lapras susceptible to Dragon-types. Ice Beam is an option to take out the Dragon-types that will stop Lapras, but it will allow rain teams to walk all over Lapras.</p>

<p>The final two moveslots are the bread and butter of this set. Rest provides full recovery, and, in the rain, Lapras's sleep is cured at the end of the turn due to Hydration. Protect is standard in the VGC metagame to ease prediction and to recover HP if opting for Leftovers.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

<p>The above EV spread allows Lapras to only be 3HKOed by Zapdos's Discharge while being able to 3HKO back without an Absorb Bulb boost, or 2HKO with an Absorb Bulb boost. Politoed stands out as one of the best teammates for Lapras, as it sets up the rain that keeps Lapras alive. Politoed can also help by using Surf to activate Lapras's Absorb Bulb. Other good teammates include: Amoonguss, who resists Fighting-type attacks, as well as any Pokemon that can take out Fighting-types.</p>

[SET]

move 1: Blizzard / Ice Beam
move 2: Surf
move 3: Ice Shard / Thunderbolt
move 4: Protect
item: Ice Gem / Water Gem
ability: Water Absorb
nature: Modest / Timid
evs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

<p>While Lapras is typically seen playing a defensive role, this set aims to capitalize on an incorrect prediction and KO specific threats that counter Lapras. For example, Yache Berry Garchomp will survive a +1 Ice Beam from the defensive set; this same Garchomp is OHKOed by an Ice Gem-boosted Blizzard. Other examples include Dragonite (with Multiscale), Latios, and even Zapdos.</p>

<p>The other three moves come down to supporting the primary STAB option, Blizzard. Surf provides a secondary STAB move, taking out Fire-types that resist Blizzard, as well as 2HKOing Tyranitar outside of sand. Ice Shard will help deal with Focus Sash users such as Chandelure; however, if they aren't problems, then Thunderbolt can be used to take out Water-types that would otherwise wall this set. Protect is, once again, standard in VGC.</p>

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

<p>This set has a couple of EV spreads that can be used. With a neutral nature and 252 Speed EVs, Lapras gets the jump on Gyarados and can KO with Thunderbolt. With a Timid nature and 252 Speed EVs, Lapras can speed tie with Honchkrow, meaning that it will beat Pokemon such as Hitmontop and Metagross. Another option would be to use this set in Trick Room with a Quiet nature and 0 Speed IVs. Lapras functions extremely well with both hail and Trick Room active.</p>
