The tier shifts were not kind to Roserade. Meleotta, Mew, and Tornadus all posing a huge threat, Roserade continues to drop. The same goes for Hitmontop, it lost quite a few spots. It was inside top 10 last time around. (Cofagrigus can be to blame for that.) The new threats will continue to push the old dominating forces down. Except Heracross, which continues to prance around at #1, because it is still awesome. (arguably broken.)

I could be wrong on this, but I can't find the September stat thread to double-check. Chandelure was 2nd overall last time, but I think (could be wrong) I remember it being up above 21%. So while it still is second, it still took a big hit in usage. I could just be misremembering, though.

Mew down at 19th is surprising. Last time it was UU it ran rampant, and demlolished teams, but it seems like the new Pokemon (like Scrafty and Moxie Heracross) we have this time are keeping it at bay. Maybe it's not as broken as everybody thinks it is. Mew at 19th is also the HIGHEST of all of the new drop downs. This is really surprising, normally people spam them until they realize that they're not as unbelievable as they think they are. I expected Mew and Tornadus to be much higher than where they are at now. Tornadus didn't even crack top 30. Virizion is pitifully sitting at 45th.

Gligar jumped 10 spots, but that's probably due to the Rock Bottom challenge. A couple of other mons (Weavile, Azumarill) seem to have jumped as well, but it's probably for the same reason.

Also people are still continuing to use Froslass and Sharpedo waaaaay the hell less than they should be.

I'm also under the impression that Umbreon jumped a bunch of spots. I thought it was outside the top 20 last time, and it is now at 16th, but again, I could be misremembering. I can't find the September Stats thread so I couldn't tell you for sure.

I think it just points out how badly UU is controlled by hazards even in it's current state that a normally completely outclassed third tier mon like Blastoise is no.3. It's not helped by UU players finally beginning to pick up on Cofagrigus as the premier UU ghost after Chandelure.

The fact Bronzong is directly after it in no.4 I believe is really telling of this issue as I find most teams HAVE to rely on Bronzong for any semblance of defense and/or a guaranteed SR setup. It just shows how horrendously balance and defensive teams are completely outclassed in UU.

Mew is a case similar to stuff like Gothitelle, Chansey and Wobbuffet in my opinion where usage never highlighted the severe problems it causes for UU. Because for all the uproar you see about it not belonging in UU and should be considered for a ban it is rarely if hardly ever even hit the top 10 in UU. This is mostly because it requires specific team setups to really show how broken it is.

Usage stats do not necessarily reflect the viability or performance of a pokemon to come to the assumption that Mew may not be as broken as people make out considering that its ranked 19th... Goth was never particularly ranked high either during its stint in UU, and neither was Wobb, to name some examples of mons that wreaked havoc despite not seeing as much. Mew just doesn't appear all that threatening at the moment because it doesn't have much usage but from my experience when I do face Mew in a team, handled by a fairly competent player, I certainly am gnashing and grinding my teeth as I lose momentum in trying to approximate what sort of Mew I am facing so as to minimize damage. From there it becomes a cat and mouse game of trying to take Mew down, which isn't exactly a walk in a park as it has bulk to protect it from Pursuit (and baton pass variants well they Baton pass) and speed. I find its best to always assume that the Mew set you're facing is probably the one you'd least like to face with your current team and so you act accordingly, but most of the time its still a guessing game I just get lucky with the gamble.

I'm kinda surprised you'd mention Scrafty given how difficult it is for Scrafty to perform in a metagame completely unkind to him, who has gone down in usage so he's not exactly gaining popularity with Mew coming back. I think Forsety pretty much hit the nail in that certain team set ups benefit more from its support, not saying that Mew needs heavy team support to fulfill its role just that when Mew is added to certain teams it becomes an incredible glue that holds the team together by filling in roles and performing them with little trouble (support or offense). Case and point is baton pass teams its a team type that exists even without Mew but when you add Mew to the team it becomes far more difficult to handle as as Mew is a glue that has the option of both boosting+passing or boosting+attacking or taunting your haze (in all scenarios you can only guess as until you see more of its moves). The team doesn't necessarily need to heavily support Mew it just fits right in without hassle and makes said team more difficult to defeat than normal.

As for its usage I don't think it has much to do with its viability as the metagame is just settling, for most part early on the metagame many were concentrated on making rain work with the return of Nadus. In addition to the challenges which may have affected some stats. I think when people begin to realize what a great go to Pokemon Mew is in team building, much like P2 as a sort of band aid to many problems or roles for a team, it will jump in popularity. Otherwise we can speculate why it doesn't have any more usage as we tend to ask about Ambipom consistently in the top 30 still its just the first month so its not exactly representative.

I realize that usage does not completely show the viability of a pokemon, but I thought the last time it was UU it was consistently hitting the top. Everybody was dreading its return to UU, and all of a sudden it's not hitting the top of usage anymore. I guess I should not have implied that this doesn't mean Mew is broken, I didn't mean to do that. I really just wanted to point out how much lower it was that last time, and how surprising it is given that it's a pretty versatile pokemon.

How is Blastoise so high? Whenever I play against it is just a sitting duck and the only thing it can is spinning. It is outclassed by every water n the tier except for spinning. Just having something that sets up at those spikers is enough. Cofagrigus is a beast and it needs more usage than #24. It rips teams apart, with a little previous damage. 4 turns is enough for it. It tanks hits easily and it spinblocks.

Rain is really good. Choice Specs Kingdra with rain 2 HKOs the whole tier. I have used a standard team that consisted of Crobat with rain dance over u-turn. Set-up rain while he is killed and than going crazy with Hydro Pump/Surf. And the best thing was; nobody saw it coming. They thought it was just a standard crobat and a standard specs kingdra. It 2hkos shaymin and Snorlax with Hydro Pump.

Because when you realize that the only two other viable spinners are Hitmontop and Claydol (not good), Blastoise is all of a sudden really cool. It also doubles up as a sponge to dangerous Pokemon like Darmanitan and Victini, which neither of the other two can do.

Well, to be fair, you could always use Kabutops... It may be weak to the plethora of Fighting-types in the tier, but it's still more viable than Claydol and hits harder than Top and Blastoise ever will. Its typing is a double-edged sword, but it can always double up as a Fire resist.

Anyway, I don't like what these stats are telling me. The metagame is becoming more offensive every day, with people opting to use sheer power over versatility and balanced stats. There are many things up there that deserve their spots, but that doesn't mean the metagame is as healthy as I'd like. Personally though, I don't believe anything is broken, maybe Mew, but that's about it.
Heracross continues to stand tall, even when every team packs at least two checks to it.
Crobat and Slowbro should see more usage, I've been using them and they're awesome (hell, I was about to lose a match to Scarf Raikou, but Slowbro survived the Thunderbolt with 5% HP left and KOed back... That's resilience right there)

I think anyone who uses a spinner on any team that isn't heavy / full stall is playing sub-optimally.

Guys, you do not need Rapid Spin! The prevalence of spinners is a relic of UU when Deo-D and Roserade were at the top, when spikestack offense reigned supreme. Spikestack offense is not nearly as common anymore (and rightfully so), meaning that often you use mediocre Pokemon and give up momentum for little benefit. Okay, so you spun Stealth Rock away, that's great, except you had to use Blastoise / Hitmontop and they're probably sitting at 30% and about ready to die. That may have been worth it when you also had to deal with spikes, but it's not right now. Stop using Blastoise. If you need to use a bulky water, use Milotic, there's no way it deserves to be #37. Or Swampert.

And just don't use Hitmontop.

Surprised that no one has commented on the Viri / Tornadus' extremely low usage. Not unexpected, but still.

I personally thought it was a shame Virizion usage was so low. My experiences with it are mainly using the SD set and I've found it pretty satisfying. Crobat walls its STABs to no end but its fairly easy to hit him with a Stone Edge on the predicted switch. Regarding Blastoise, yes it's mediocre but a lot of great Pokemon just function so much better without Stealth Rock on the field (and looking at your other options for a spinner I don't really blame people for resorting to using it, though Kabutops does intrigue me). Zapdos, Crobat, Weavile, Chandelure, Darmanitan; all great options that benefit from Blastoise's utility as a spinner. Nobody really likes using him, but he's the best there is at what he does in the tier (I miss the days when Donphan was UU).

When you're running Yanmega or another powerful but x4 Stealth Rock weak Pokemon such as Articuno or Moltres, you kind of do. If you're running multitudes of hyper offense Pokes who just happen to be weak to SR, you kind of need a Rapid Spinner to make their job easier to perform. When dealing with Froslass or Roserade, you could easily use a Rapid Spinner (but it's not necessarily needed for Spikes, since Levitators are quite a common sight, as are Flying-types) and then make the Spikes a complete waste.

I also used Blastoise as a Choice Specs surprise revengekiller. It's surprisingly good at this, and still fits Stall for this (although honestly his Rapid Spin tank set is better, there is no doubt that an offensive Blastoise holds some merit - I lost to quite a few Choiced Blastoise due to the surprise value it held alone, not to mention my tendency of being weak to Blastoise).

Blastoise is still a good Pokemon at the end of the day. Other Rapid Spinners tend to be average/bad at their roles, but also have other sets they could run which make them at least resemble "decent" in UU.

good god man what are you revenging with a specs blastoise and how are you making it fit on anything that is remotely reminiscent of a stall team....

On another note, lol at these teammate stats. Apparently everybody loves Heracross as a teammate!!! I am thinking Rapid Spin is still very useful on any type as team as long as they have stuff like Volt Switchin Zapdos or U TUrning Crobats since they do so much switching...of couse whenever I do something like that I will be using Xatu because i suk at spinning against Sableye x_x

Considering that Blastoise's base Speed is 78 and using a Specs set makes you run 252 EVs in Speed, he can safely outspeed a couple of things (I also use Timid nature in conjunction). Being able to revengekill the likes of Honchkrow, Machamp, CB Rhyperior, and BU Scrafty is actually pretty nice (although it still loses to some threats who sit in similar speed tiers, like Togekiss).

That said, even I know there are more viable things to do with Blastoise in the long run (again, his tankier sets are better, by far).

I'd say HO and VolTurn need the support equally as much if not more, imo. Both team types suffer from hazards about as much as full stall, so they need the support, especially in UU where common wallbreaking cores consist of multiple fire types.

Technitop isn't bad, but I've recently fallen in love with a CB Rapid Spinner I randomly came up with for the latest UU teambuilding challenge. Not THAT useful, but it has a niche over Blastoise for Intimidate, Rock resistance, and superior special bulk. I find that it gets more opportunities to come in than Blastoise, which is important. It just has that nasty inability to get around spinblockers.

I'm actually not too surprised Virizion isn't being used. The meta's not too friendly to it right now, because Tornadus, Ambipom, and co. have ways to 1hko it. Tornadus is just extremely underrated right now; I think it may jump if someone posts up a successful RMT or something with it.

I already agreed with the reasoning of flareblitz, but I'd like to respond to this because there are a few things I feel are somewhat wrong with the responses here. Firstly volturn shouldn't be running a spinner at all because it kills the momentum of u-turns and volt-switches since no spinner gets either move, I think. At most, volturn will use Xatu if they are concerned about hazards, which is rather different to a spinner altogether. As for HO, I wasn't aware they were even concerned with spinning when its more likely to be a suicide hazard lead + 5 pokes to bash you into oblivion with. Rather I'd have thought they'd be more concerned with winning the match before hazards can take their toll, or simply kill the setters outright before too many go up.

As for the example you posted, while it might be relevant, its not exactly one that could be reliably replicated. There are certainly points in games where many could agree with you, but the example in question does ignore otherwise key factors to your argument; damage rolls and crits, perhaps even prior lefties recovery/LO damage from a previous turn. Your example is certainly noteworthy to rapid spins importance, but it does not tell the full story of the match, nor is it replicable enough to demonstrate the importance reliably.

The second problem with the bolded response is the fact you're essentially a pokemon down from the start, all to support one other pokemon. Admittedly I only really have played balance teams but it seems ridiculous to me to waste a team slot just to help a pokemon that may not have even needed the spin support to begin with. Of the pokemon available to us in the UU tier, I'd argue only yanmega and Darmanitan really require the spin support. Every other possible example of pokemon in UU I feel would fall into these categories
1. Can easily heal off the damage: E.G Crobat, Zapdos using roost.
2. It does not matter at this stage of the game: E.G SD weaville going for a late-game sweep.
3. They should've done their job long before hazards take their toll: E.G specs chandy tearing holes into the other players team.

Of course, full stall might try and make your life hell in this regard, but I guess its up to you whether you consider this as a factor or not, or possibly, whether you can play around stalling pokes setting hazards.

For your final point, I don't think pokemon used for a challenge are the best idea to make a point, though from a predictive perspective, I guess no-one would suspect a CB rapid spin (though the amount of damage dealt may cause suspicion...) But even then that's an awful move to get locked into, let alone the possibility of a hazard setter coming in and proceeding to reset hazards in your face (e.g frosslass and roserade don't really mind hitmontop).

As for my own thoughts, I'd say this. Ask yourself the following
1. Do any of my pokemon actually need the spin support?
2. Can I play around SR/Spikes? (e.g win long before, bounce back with xatu, perhaps a bulky team with recovery?)
3. If it does need spin, could its job be done better by another pokemon in the tier?

Even though they can heal off the damage, Stealth Rock is still a big limit on their effectiveness. For example, Physically Bulky Zapdos is 3HKO'd by Scarf Heracross' Stone Edge but this turns into a 2HKO with Stealth Rock. The same situation applies with Scarf Flygon's Outrage and Scarf Krookodile's Stone Edge. Stealth Rock just brings so many Pokemon into a HP range that makes them a lot less capable from the get go. There are times I wish it didn't exist (or at least if there was some kind of SR-less server) but sadly it does. And as long as this is the case spinners will be popular.

Blastoise is so braindead easy to use that you might as well toss him on the team whenever you have Victini just to make sure it can do whatever it wants all game. Pick a defensive stat to invest in, use Scald/Roar/Rapid Spin/filler, and go to work. One of the few Pokemon in UU I find who always does his job. Makes the team take like 100%+ less per game and tosses around Scald like an asshole.

Claydol and Hitmontop would be a lot better if they had Roar. And Scald. And Water typing.

But really though. 100% Victinis running everywhere. Yeeeeaaaah, no. Hold onto your balls and your spinblockers; Blastoise ain't goin' nowhere.

Good points. I've never played anything more defensive than balanced, with my teams having an average of 1 wall, so it stands to reason I appreciate lack of SR to enhance my survivability a lot more. My example was rather extreme - not very likely, perhaps, but I did damage calcs and ascertained that with rocks I would most certainly have died, while I had a 100% survival rate with them down. It's the extra 12.5/25% that makes the difference between a 2hko and a 3hko.

I don't think you understand how SR-weak offensive teams are, especially those that rely on Focus Sash. For example, I occasionally run Focus Sash Swords Dance Weavile, which gets trolled doubly because of SR weak AND no FS, which is sometimes my last-ditch backup against boosting sweepers: take a hit, then revenge. Then there's Darmanitan, who loses enough of his health from a single hit already and loses his ability to bait counters effectively with U-Turn, as he will be taking another 25% every time he swaps in. Then there's Victini, who suffers arguably more because it's almost literally forced to swap out after a V-Create. Another example? Victini, and Arcanine both definitely survive a CB Aqua Jet from Azumarill at full health, though one wouldn't stay in unless it had to. With SR, no dice at all. Specs Chandelure can 1hko Azumarill with Overheat about 50% of the time, but it's guaranteed with SR. Cofagrigus loses handily to Darmanitan when SR is up, as Flare Blitz 1hkos only then. Togekiss loses to Heracross ONLY when there's SR up (CC and Stone Edge both do upwards of ~75%, but not enough to 1hko). There's a large list of things that SR turns from 2hkos to 1hkos, and from 3hkos to 2hkos. Many teams have more than 1 SR weak Pokemon, and many players do tend to swap around a lot, racking up hazard damage.

Yeah, CB Hitmontop is mainly for lulz but surprisingly, not too bad. Blastoise is a valuable team member for its defensive capabilities as well as spining.

I'd like to answer your questions based on my own perspective:
1. Darmanitan definitely, Togekiss is a maybe depending on the opponent. Depending on the team, Weavile needs it, as does Chandelure.
2. Sure. But would you rather run Xatu over Blastoise or Hitmontop? And what if the game lasts long? Can you guarantee a victory before SR takes its toll?
3. Maybe. Darmanitan can't, though - there's nothing that does the same as it, except Victini, who appreciates the spinning more. Togekiss might be replaced by Mew.

Hm... While I just came back from a hiatus (school/fun/etc) I'm surprised to see some of these; mainly Bisharp and Qwilfish. I mean, both are out of the top 50, and I find both of them to be amazing. Despite useful type and Intimidate awesomeness, I can understand Qwilfish I guess. I mean, it is RU, but Bisharp... I don't get how it's 51. SD, Sucker Punch, cool typing and stats? I feel like it deserves to be above Claydol at least. :/
And also, Hitmontop: iirc, it was in top ten; poor guy's dropping just a tad ;-;...
But, I'm excited to see the changing metagame! Didn't Umbreon and Crobat were that high, two of my faves.

I'm really confused as to why Virizion is so low in usage. I've had a lot of success with a SD +3 attacks set. CC, Stone Edge, and Leaf Blade get ridiculously good coverage, and 108 speed is pretty good in this metagame. If you can take out the one or two Pokemon your opponent has that outspeed you can pretty much ensure a sweep. The common defensive cores are wrecked by Virizion's STABs (just watch out for Sableye). He really needs to be getting some more love.

Virizion isn't exactly a bad Pokemon (its actually pretty good), but it is not well equipped to take on UU.
