Hey guys, for a long time now I've found that Forretress is a pretty lackluster pokemon. That is, it seems that it tries to do too much: you try to set up Spikes and/or SR, as well as trying to Spin - and in the meanwhile, you're set-up bait for everything in existence. Worse, no form of recovery hinders your ability to repeatedly Rapid Spin, some of the common hazard setters in the tier don't really mind Forretress (i.e., Ferrothorn, Deoxys-D) and Spinblockers (Jellicent + Gengar) deal with you pretty easily. So, I had an idea: What if, instead of trying to fulfill heaps of different roles all at once, you specialised? Say, you forgo hazards altogether and make Forretress a Full-Time Spinner? It seems a massive shame to do this, but it also has the potential to make Forry far better at Spinning, which should be it's primary job anyway (as otherwise Ferrothorn outclasses it). I was thinking something like this:
Forretress @Leftovers
Sturdy
Relaxed - 252 HP/ 176 Def / 80 Sp. Def
-Rapid Spin
-Gyro Ball
-Earthquake/ Volt Switch
-Toxic/ Pain Split
The given EVs are just from the standard Forry set. Basically, Rapid Spin is the key player here as discussed above. Taking hazards out of it's moveset though allows Forretress to run more coverage, and therefore isn't setup bait so much. Gyro Ball is obligatory STAB, and hits Gengar (spinblocker) hard, while Earthquake nails Magnezone (and Tentacruel too, for that matter). You could run Volt Switch here, but I feel like the ability to outright kill Magnezone is kind of better than a super weak Volt Switch - VS does let you scout your opponent though. Finally, Toxic lets you hit Jellicent (other primary spinblocker of OU) on the switch, as well as just letting you get in on some statusing shenanigans. However, Pain Split is a really good move over this as well - the recovery is unreliable, but it will almost certainly help Forretress live - and thus spin - for longer.
So - Dedicated spinner set. Good idea or bad idea? I have no idea myself; this was just something I thought of, so now I'm off to test it :3
