can we stop with the steelix please? it's a terrible excuse for a wall these days, skarmory outclasses it in almost every way imaginable. skarm has hazards, better phazing, better typing, better stats, and instant recovery to boot. steelix has what? an electric immunity? great, but every electric type in the game right now carries something to hit steelix hard with, minus maybe jolteon who isn't a big deal anyways...and being able to ohko gengar and aerodactyl, two incredibly weak pokemon, after investing over 130 evs in attack isn't a big deal, stop flaunting it like it is. look at like every single common physical threat these days, stuff like terrakion, garchomp, breloom, and lucario. every single one of them fails to hit skarmory for se damage (except fblast chomp which isn't that common) and every single one of them hits steelix super-effectively with their main stab attack. it stands to reason that if the physical wall you're marketing crumbles to the four most common physical attackers in the game, it isn't a great physical wall.

Halcyon.

Hippowdon doesn't resist Icicle Spear from Cloyster, nor does it resist the rest of the multiturn moves, just to clear that.
Steelix doesn't resist Icicle Spear either. I think the combination of Steelix having relatively no niche in the current metagame and the fact that I don't think I've ever seen one in my three years of online play make me think it's probably not suited for the OU tier. Though I will say that Steelix is pretty high up on the Coolest Looking Pokémon Thread.

I didn't mention it because it looks cool, but because I think it has some viability. Have a look at Steelix's defense stat and tell me if it resist it ;)

I have used it, and found it to be a great supporter. I think all the advantages/weaknesses have been mentioned now, so there is no reason to discuss it further. Just watch out for my overpowered Steelix when it breaks your necks ;)

No. Electivire and Charizard are unviable in the current OU metagame, and adding them to the list gives the implication that they can somehow be used successfully. An E tier is also highly superfluous, since the list would expand for miles with all sorts of non-viable crap. For simplicity's sake, assume everything not on the list that isn't Uber is not viable.

Also, "overpowered Steelix" has to be one of the most oxymoronic statements I've ever heard. #justsayin'

EDIT I: I agree with Lavos Spawn. Please stop marketing Steelix. It simply does not work. It's outclassed as a SR-setting lead by Terrakion, Garchomp, and Custap Skarmory, and as a physical wall by Skarmory, Hippowdon, Landorus-T, and even Cresselia.

EDIT II: Warning: wall of text below this post.

EDIT III: Never mind.

I didn't even bother to read them, please tell me how steelix does anything better than either Skarmory or Ferrothorn (heck even Forretress). Sure it's Defense Stat is HUGE, but what else does it have to offer? Stealth Rock is everywhere, Roar/Dragon Tail is common enough and by far not a niché that Steelix can have on it's own, Gyroball: a STAB attack with high damage thanks to general slow-ness 1HKO's Gengar with an ATK investment, what. Not to mention the fact that steelix lacks any special moves that make other pokémon at least usable despite their flaws (speaking of things like Spore, Wish, even T-wave >.<!), and that without any reliable way of healing other than rest and lefties?

Not to mention every single weather has three ways to shit over Steelix. Yes, even hail.

You're absolutely right, there is no more need to discuss this any further ;)

It's still not going on the viability rankings in case you're wondering, mainly because it offers nothing over our current Steels. This thing is RU for a (boatload of) reason(s).

Alright, so we are not stopping the discussion?

All I'm saying is that on my team, Steelix does the job quite good, with a little prediction and the right support. You guys make it sound like Steelix has to be able to kill and counter a bunch of poke's, but that's not what I use it for at all.

As I already said, I agree that Skarmory does have more advantages, mainly because of it's ability to heal itself, but on some teams, Steelix can do a good job of setting up rocks and function as a physical wall.

I'm not saying it works on all teams - just on some. And I can only write from own experience, where it's been a good team mate. I'm sure it could function for other OU teams as well :)

Let's stop it here, and move on :) It was a suggestion, not an attempt of starting a war!

Yeah tbh Steelix is a Pokemon we shouldn't even be discussing right now. Steelix holds no place of usefulness, value, or viability in the OU metagame. It shouldn't be even mentioned in an OU thread, and this is very much reminding me of the Dusclops discussion back in page 44 (iirc).

Since I might as well nominate something, I could suggest that Scolipede be added to C-Rank. Scolipede has quite the admirable Speed tier, at a nice 112, outpacing the Latis and Terrakion. Scolipede has access to Spikes, which means he can be an excellent hazard setter for offensive teams, as he gets Spikes up quite quickly. A STAB Megahorn is good too as it can scare Starmie and Espeon away so they can't freely come in to stop Scolipede from doing his job. QuakeSlide coverage also is a nice boon so Scolipede can put some nice dents on the opposing team while laying Spikes. Toxic Spikes is also pretty cool. Overall I think Scolipede is pretty solid when it comes to spiking and should be at least C-Rank.

I think Accelgor could make it there as well though, since he's about as good as Scolipede at Spiking.

I agree with that, Scolipede is definitely a really cool Pokemon. It may not be the best, but it does have some use in offensive Spikestacking team; it can lay down a layer of either Spikes depending on the opposing team and dish out a powerful attack or two. I also think that if it has an OU analysis, it should at least be somewhere on this list: if it was completely unviable, it wouldn't have an analysis right?

I'd also rather use Scolipede than Froslass (currently in C rank), both Forretress and Starmie beat it which eliminates it main advantage.

ElectivireRocks

Forretress easily defeats Scolipede if it has Gyro Ball, while Scolipede can't do anything in return.
And Froslass can potentially beat Starmie with Shadow Ball.

Froslass OHKOs Starmie with LO Shadow Ball, but Starmie OHKOs uninvested Froslass with LO Hydro Pump after Rocks.

252 SpA Life Orb Froslass Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Starmie: 283-335 (108.42 - 128.35%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Life Orb Starmie Hydro Pump vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Froslass: 286-337 (101.77 - 119.92%) -- guaranteed OHKO

If Steelix has to be included, D Rank (or below) is the best fit.

* He is immune to Electric, but vulnerable to Ground. Ground moves are often physical however, meaning that he can survive them unless they are STAB.
You are misunderstanding how Ground (and Fighting) moves affect Steelix's performance in OU. The fact that Steelix can survive super effective Physical attacks is not the key point here. The problem is that these attacks are hitting for SE, and therefore, are doing significant damage.

The most important thing to note is that every physical offensive pokemon in OU relies on Fighting, Ground, or Water attacks in order to complete coverage. EVERY SINGLE ONE. There are no physical attackers in OU who don't hit Steelix for super effective damage-- AND it has no reliable recovery. Even though Steelix is far bulkier than Skarmory, every physical Pokemon in OU can hit it harder than Skarmory just because of its weaknesses.

This means there are literally zero opponents Steelix can switch in on easily (enemy skarm/forry? They set up all over Steelix; physical jirachi? woo-hoo)-- a ridiculous problem for a defensive Pokemon. A defensive Pokemon that isn't a full stop to at least a handful of threats is pretty much worthless.

Furthermore, SR and phazing alone just aren't enough support to justify a spot on a team-- not when competing against hippowdon, skarmory, and foretress.

Skarmory--
-Has no weaknesses to the majority of physical attacks, as physical fire/electric moves are very rare (and Victini/Darmanitan would destroy Steelix anyway; physical electric moves are basically non-existent).
-Roost gives it a lot more survivability (phazing is infinitely more useful on a Pokemon that has recovery)
-Spikes gives it something to do against the foes it walls (since it does wall some foes, unlike Steelix)
-STAB Flying is a MUCH better mono-STAB for a defensive Pokemon-- nothing resists it, it's a powerful offensive type, and BB has 120 base power. Big difference from Steelix's EQ, which almost half the meta is immune to.

Foretress--
-Has no weaknesses to common physical attacks
-Spikes is key; as Foretress almost always has a way to take advantage of the switches its defensive abilities force
-Rapid Spin also lets Foretress provide key support
-Even though it will eventually get worn down (like Steelix), its key support options let you get a lot of bang for your buck

Bronzong
-That immunity to Ground is sooooo clinche; Dragon + Ground, Ice + Ground, Rock + Ground, etc.
-Neutrality to Fighting and Water helps too
-Bronzong's defensive type allows it to STOP KEY THREATS that nothing else can.
-Compare this to Steelix being hit very hard by EVERY offensive Pokemon in the entire metagame

I know the weaknesses of Steelix well enough to know that some moves do significant damage to him, but that can be said for any pokemon. I can't see how that is an argument.

Also, there is absolutely no reason to keep Steelix out in the open against pokemons that threat him, which is why he needs strong team support, as mentioned several times before. I already mentioned a handful of pokemons that he blocks. Depending on the opponent, he can be a good lead, or he can easily get into battle later as he takes pitiful damage from all toxic spikes and stealth rock.

Following your logic, pokemons like Espeon and Alakazam would also be useless simply because they have weaknesses that can lead to OHKO on them (which Steelix prevents with sturdy).

Coming up with a list of pokemons that do the job better in certain circumstances isn't helpful, as I already mentioned that depending on the team and the situation, other pokemons can do the job better, though mostly Skarmory. Forretress and Bronzong doesn't use the same strategy as Steelix and Skarmory as they can't use Roar/Whirlwind/Dragon Tail.

You do realize that the main point of his post was that almost every physical attacker in OU threatens him, right? Same goes with Special attackers to a degree, since Steelix doesn't really want to take a special hit. Like the others before me, I really can't see any reason to use Steelix in OU over something like Skarmory. Basically the only benefit it has is an Electric immunity, which isn't going to be helping it much since the most common users of electric attacks carry coverage moves that hit Steelix super-effectively. Aside from that small advantage, there isn't much point for Steelix to be in OU in the first place. I'd say it probably shouldn't be on the Ranking list at all.

Seeing some of the pokemons mentioned here, I'd vote for a mention of Steelix. He more or less guarantees SR, and has the ability to use Roar/Dragon Tail along with it, causing havoc for unprepared teams.

With Sturdy, he is impossible to kill with 1 hit, and is immune to Toxic Spikes while resisting Stealth Rock. His numerous immunities and resistances makes it easy to switch him into certain powerful threats, such as a Salamence with Outrage for example.

Steelix have powerful STAB attacks as well, 1hko'ing Gengar among others. Here's an example of a moveset for him.

Steelix
Nature: Relaxed
Ability: Sturdy
Item: Leftovers
EVs: 252 HP, 132 ATK, 126 DEF

~ Stealth Rock
~ Earthquake
~ Roar/Dragon Tail
~ Gyro Ball

The EV Spread allows Steelix to 1hko Heatran, Aerodactyl and Gengar most of the time, while 2hko’ing Jirachi. With 220 Attack, Steelix will 2hko Metagross and guarantee a 1hko on Gengars who don’t hide behind a substitute with Gyro Ball.

Further, the fact that he can roar most threats away makes him good against Ninjask and other Baton Passers or stat raisers who think they can set up on him.

I hope you'l consider Steelix as worthy of mention in a thread like this :)
FIrst off, Aerodactyl and Gengar are very frail, and the former doesnt even see much use in OU.
Heatran is 4x weak to EQ but offensive Heatran will outspeed and (OHKO with Sturdy down) with Fire Blast. Offensive Tran is immune to EQ via Air Balloon and 4x resists Gyro Ball. Even if u hit it to break the balloon, so many teammates carry fighting coverage so its not too hard to beat the steel snake.

Ground/Steel is a bad STAB combo.

To give you an idea of what resists both

Gyarados
Thundurus
Rotom Wash
Rotom Heat

These pokemon (bar Rotom H) are pretty common in the OU environment and have ways of CRAPPING on Steelix. Rotom W can Hydro Pump, Gyarados can intimidate it, making Steelix's already bad attack even worse, and 2HKO with Waterfall, and Thundy T can Focus Blast it or even use Grass Knot to 2HKO. Even Rotom Heat OHKOs with Overheat.

Keldeo blows through it with Hydro Pump/Surf or can even deal good damage with Secret Sword.

Terrakion 2HKOs it with CC

Conkeldurr just smashes it to pieces with Drain Punch.

Breloom rapes it with LO Technician Low Sweep/Mach Punch

Scizor deals good damage to it with Superpower

Reuniclus beats it with Focus Blast

So sorry, but to put it plainly, Steelix sucks in the OU meta. Ground Steel typing maybe decent, but really only on a sweeper (hence one of the reasons Excadrill was banned to Ubers, immune to Twave and toxic, 4x resists SR). For a defensive pokemon, Ground/Steel is one of the crappier typings to have, and to make it worse, Steelix's average HP stat just adds insult to the wound.

At least Ferrothorn has a great set of resistances, and can beat spinners.
At least Forretress sets up hazards, spins and starts momentum
At least Jirachi can troll everyone with Paraflinch.

So Steelix is purely outclassed in everyway. Theres a multitude of reasons why its RU (don't even bother bringing up Amoonguss, that has a killer ability and a good defensive typing)

I really don't think we are getting anywhere now :) I appreciate the debate, but I have said everything I wanted to say. Every pokemon has a list of threats that can defeat them.

If you're dropping it, I don't want to chase a dead argument, but I thought I'd at least respond to your post. I also don't mean to discourage you, and we're not trying to attack you for bringing up Steelix. It just seems out of place for very obvious reasons.

I know the weaknesses of Steelix well enough to know that some moves do significant damage to him, but that can be said for any pokemon. I can't see how that is an argument.
The point is that it's not "some moves", but moves that are used by almost every offensive Pokemon in the metagame. There are no threats that don't hit Steelix hard, and that's a problem.

Also, there is absolutely no reason to keep Steelix out in the open against pokemons that threat him, which is why he needs strong team support, as mentioned several times before.
The problem is that almost every Pokemon can significantly hurt him-- so there is almost nothing you can freely switch him into or leave him in against. Essentially, even if we play by your logic here-- he'll be doing nothing then; a waste of a team slot.

Following your logic, pokemons like Espeon and Alakazam would also be useless simply because they have weaknesses that can lead to OHKO on them (which Steelix prevents with sturdy).
Espeon and Alakazam have 110 and 120 Speed respectively. They don't rely on their bulk at all for Survivability. Their Speed and offensive abilities allow them to take out foes without getting hit.

Steelix is a slow defensive Pokemon that uses bulk for survivability. The problem arises because:
a) His Special defense is crap-- EVERY SPECIAL ATTACKER CAN BEAT HIM
b) Every physical attacker uses Ground-, Fighting-, and Water-type attacks-- EVERY PHYSICAL ATTACKER CAN SEVERELY HURT HIM
c) He has no reliable recovery-- SO EVERY HIT TAKES ITS TOLL
d) Despite the above facts, Steelix is supposed to be a defensive Pokemon-- HOW DOES THAT WORK!?

I think you are right on most points, but as I already mentioned, he can function against a handful of pokemons in the tier, such as Heatran and Jolteon. My team had problems with Jolteon for example, a problem that Steelix fixed.

Also, his strength is not in 1 on 1's, but rather in SR/Roar and in switching in on pokemons that are locked into certain common moves, such as Outrage sweepers. If the opponent switches, he can use Roar on the switch, building up more damage and weaknening the opponent, so my priority moves can kill them. I realise this is a small niche, and not a unique one since Skarmory can do the same (thought it's less bulky) but it happens to me more often than I would like, if I didn't have Steelix. For these reasons, Steelix functions better than Skarmory on my team (who would be weak against Jolteon).

I agree that other leads/supporters does the job better in most cases, all I'm saying is that on a few teams, Steelix can be an asset because of his immunities to Electric moves, and his physical bulk. Not every pokemon carries Life Orb, many have choice items where Steelix can take advantage of it.

He's not an Uber pokemon of course, but he usually succeeds in setting up SR at least, and might get a chance to cause a little havoc with his Roar/STAB attacks. That's fine for my team. Since I was so surprised of his capabilities, I thought I wanted to discuss his worth in OU, which I feel we have done now. As long as I can use him in OU, I'm happy, so it matters little. Just a heads up :)

Hi,
I think you are right on most points, but as I already mentioned, he can function against a handful of pokemons in the tier, such as Heatran and Jolteon. My team had problems with Jolteon for example, a problem that Steelix fixed.
Steelix is pretty much a waste of a team slow and every role it wants to take on is done better by something else. Also, its flaws are compounded by its aforementioned weaknesses to common types such as Ground, Fighting and Water.

Heatran beats Steelix 1 on 1 -> 252+ SpA Heatran Lava Plume vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Steelix: 408-480 (115.25 - 135.59%) -- guaranteed OHKO

With Sturdy being negated by the ubiquitous stealth rock as well as all the 'walling' that Steelix allegedly does.

Steelix is almost completely outclassed by Skarmory. Sure - it might have a higher base defensive stats but as we can see in Gen V base stats mean very little compared to other factors including Fighting weaknesses, weaknesses to Stealth Rock and poor movepools (see: Kyurem-B). Steelix suffers from pretty much all of those, lacking any form of reliable recovery (rest is awful in Gen V) and can instantly be checked by almost any special attacker in the tier.

I agree that other leads/supporters does the job better in most cases, all I'm saying is that on a few teams, Steelix can be an asset because of his immunities to Electric moves, and his physical bulk. Not every pokemon carries Life Orb, many have choice items where Steelix can take advantage of it.
Again - better Pokemon can fill this niche. Need a bulky steel type with an electric resistance? Try Ferrothorn - who even has a water resistance as well as Leech Seed, Spikes and Thunder Wave (among other moves). The point is that Steelix is completely outclassed and cannot function well as a Defensive Pokemon due to how easily it is switched into, countered and has to take repeated damage in an extremely offensive metagame.

He's not an Uber pokemon of course, but he usually succeeds in setting up SR at least, and might get a chance to cause a little havoc with his Roar/STAB attacks.
Ferrothorn, Landorus-T, Skarmory amongst other Pokemon can all set up Rocks (and some phaze) and Steelix's attacks are pitifully weak in comparison to more offensive Pokemon in the game with it failing to do much noticeable damage to a ton of OU Pokemon without a hefty amount of offensive investment into its Effort Values.

Please add something new to the discussion if you want to continue it :)

1 on 1 Steelix vs Heatran leaves Steelix the victor, unless Heatran carries Air Balloon. Entry Hazards are not a factor in turn 1.

Okay, fair enough. If I ever have a team that's Jolteon weak (unlikely though... as Jolteon is one of the least threatening offensive Pokemon in the metagame...), and needs Steel resistances and SR + Roar, I'll think of Steelix.

Overall though, his poor special bulk and weaknesses to attacking types found on every physical attacker make him an unattractive option for OU. Usually in choosing a defensive Pokemon, you don't want to be relying on only prediction (switching it in against resists only) and the opponent using choice items. There are too many times when this is not the case.

Usually, when picking a defensive Pokemon, we want one that has very specific threats it checks/walls handily.

People want to rely on Celebi stopping Keldeo, Politoed, and Rotom-W cold. People want to see Hippowdon stop Terrakion and Tyranitar in their tracks. People want to rely on checkingg Haxorus, Scizor, Garchomp, and Landorus-T when they switch in Skarmory-- not praying that they doesn't use Superpower/Earthquake.

Usually speaking, you want a defensive Pokemon that has strong survivability over the course of the match, and is a clear and reliable check to a handful of strong threats. This is especially true in a metagame where there are simply so many Pokemon TO check.

Also, btw-- I would NEVER consider Steelix when thinking about how to deal with Heatran for my team.

You know that Steelix has 30 base speed, right? I never mentioned it being on turn one, either. If you left Heatran in without an Air Balloon / Shuca Berry on a lead Steelix you deserve to have it killed. Oh, and by the way:
Code:
0 Atk Steelix Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 360-424 (93.5 - 110.12%) -- 56.25% chance to OHKO
That's essentially a coin flip on a kill and that's not even considering a possible burn it could incur from a Lava Plume.

Nonetheless, Chou Toshio pretty much covered everything else. Steelix only brings some extremely specific use to the table which would much better be fixed with proper team reworking.

Always nice to hear second opinions. Let's leave it at that, and move on to discuss something else (still nothing new to discuss here).

Cloyster needs to be moved up to B rank.
The standard Shell Smash set is garbage because it relies on an item and a water attack that don't help Cloyster in the slightiest.

Here's the set Cloyster should be running:

Cloyster @ Life Orb
Trait: Skill Link
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 HP
Adamant Nature
- Shell Smash
- Icicle Spear
- Rock Blast
- Ice Shard

A Jolly nature can be used to outspeed up to Choice Scarf Keldeo and Terrakion, but Adamant nets more important OHKO's.

Here are a few notable damage calculations (Keldeo's first calculation uses a Jolly nature, all the others are Adamant):

Code:

These are the most common Cloyster switch-ins and/or revenge killers.
In other words Cloyster only needs SR and a layer of Spikes to have absolutely no safe switch ins and being guaranteed to OHKO something.
Even without that support, the list of things that are OHKO'd is huge.

A very important thing to keep in mind when using Icicle Spear and Rock Blast is that each of them has roughly a 28% chance to crit on at least 1 hit, which is almost the same as Scald's burn rate. A single critical hit will easily turn those OHKO's that rely on entry hazards into OHKO's regardless of them.

Notably Cloyster has the ability to sweep an entire sun team by itself, as they usually rely on Dugtrio, Scarf Latios and Chlorophyll Venusaur as revenge killers instead of priority attacks.

Of course Jirachi, Scizor, Starmie and Conkeldurr can easily revenge kill it, but that's with or without White Herb so I don't get the point of running it over Life Orb.
In fact the very idea of White Herb on Cloyster is an oxymoron: it doesn't help it grab the crucial OHKO's it needs, it's not good enough to save it from Scizor's Bullet Punch and Mach Punch, it doesn't help against phazers, it doesn't help with its SR weakness and it sure as hell doesn't help with Scarf Starmie.

Hydro Pump and Razor shell are unreliable and weak, respectively, and their only use is OHKOing Forretress (assuming Sturdy has been broken) and Magnezone.
Ice Shard also prevents Cloyster from being revenge killed by Breloom's Mach Punch, which is extremely helpful.

I see absolutely no reason not to run this set over the common White Herb one without Ice Shard.
Try it and you'll see why Cloyster is definitely not C-rank material.
Just remember that Cloyster is a late-game sweeper, much like Extremekiller in ubers.
