Quagsire (Update) (QC 3/3) (GP 2/2)

phantom

Banned deucer.
[Overview]
 • Has a lot of competition for a bulky water-type
 • mostly outclassed with mediocre defenses getting it 2HKOed by a lot of attacks and offenses which make it setup bait
 • it does have one saving grace, unaware
 • it can stop setup sweepers like SD gallade (though it loses if gallade carries Leaf Blade or anything other than a lum berry -.-), which no other bulky water can claim
 • like other bulky waters, it can check aggron, entei, Aerodactyl, while also faring rather well against some CM users, setting it apart
 • Quite mediocre and only works to beat certain set up sweepers and a handful of CM users

[SET]
name: Physically Defensive
move 1: Recover
move 2: Scald
move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Toxic / Encore
item: Leftovers
ability: Unaware
nature: Relaxed
evs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]
 • Recover + unaware is what allows it to consistently beat SD lum gallade
 • Scald allows it to spread burns and better wall most physical attackers
 • Earthquake takes advantage of Quagsire's higher offensive stat, letting it do some actual damage
 • Toxic cripple walls and sweepers, though it conflicts somewhat with scald
 • encore trolls substitute users like walrein and lilligant who try to set up on it

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
 • Pairs well with Fire-types and sap sipper Pokemon, as it loathes grass-type attacks
 • rapid spin support is helpful, as quagsire tend to lure in spike users like roselia and ferroseed
 • despite how much it hates them, it has good synergy with grass-types like amoongus
 • Has no way to deal with status afflictions and will deteriorates its walling capabilities, so roselia and clefable also make okay partners as they can provide arometherapy and heal bell support
 • partners really well with defensive steel-types like magneton and Escavalier, as they can sponge grass-type attacks, while it can take Fire- and some Fighting-type moves
 • yawn works as a pseudo-phazing move, giving its team some momentum, though, just like toxic, it conflicts with scald as well
 • Ice Beam can be used to hit sigilyph, druddigon, and grass-type switch-ins
 • specially defensive

[Other Options]
 • Water Absorb
 • Ice Punch
 • Stone Edge
 • Swagger
 • Counter
 • Curse
 • Stockpile

[Checks and Counters]
 • Grass-types like sceptile, lilligant, and ferroseed to a lesser extent
 • amoongus and roselia can even absorb toxic
 • speaking of toxic, quagsire hates the aforementioned status affliction
 • Clefable and Sigilyph
 • Guts users like hariyama can plow away at it
 • Powerful attackers like medicham and esca, though they need to watch out for a burn
 • Anything with Grass-type coverage, really like galvantula, Cinccino, and omastar, though they can't really switch into it

[Overview]

When one thinks of bulky Water-types in RU, Quagsire isn't the first Pokemon that comes to mind, and it shouldn't be. Quagsire is largely outclassed by other bulky Water-types, such as Slowking, Alomomola, and Poliwrath, due to their superior typing and supportive capabilities. Moreover, Quagsire's mediocre defenses often leave it 2HKOed by a vast array of neutral STABs, such as Medicham's Hi Jump Kick and Druddigon's Outrage. However, it does have one saving grace: its ability Unaware. Like other bulky Water-types, Quagsire can deal with Pokemon such as Aggron, Entei, and Aerodactyl, but Unaware gives it the added benefit of being able to take on Calm Mind users, such as Uxie, as well as Swords Dance users such as Gallade. Keep in mind, though, that while Quagsire can work in the right situations, its walling capabilities are far too specific to be considered for most teams. When deciding on a bulky Water-type, there are plenty of other options to consider over Quagsire.

[SET]
name: Physically Defensive
move 1: Recover
move 2: Scald
move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Toxic / Encore
item: Leftovers
ability: Unaware
nature: Relaxed
evs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

With Recover and Unaware, Quagsire has the ability to wall threatening setup sweepers such as Swords Dance + Lum Berry Gallade. Scald is Quagsire's most important attack, as it patches up its Defense by potentially crippling a physical attacker with a burn. Earthquake is Quagsire's best shot at inflicting any serious damage on Fire-types, such as Magmortar and Entei, and makes good use out of its higher Attack stat. Toxic works exceptionally well with Recover, as the combination gives Quagsire the opportunity to outstall a plethora of defensive Pokemon, such as Slowking and Uxie. Alternatively, Encore works well by snatching momentum away from setup sweepers and team supporters who attempt to set up on Quagsire. Encore also helps stop Lilligant and Sceptile from boosting, forces entry hazard user into using Stealth Rock repeatedly, and potentially limits dual screens users, such as Uxie, to one screen.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Quagsire can make use of a few other moves to use in the final slot. Ice Beam can be used to dent Grass-type switch-ins, Druddigon, and offensive Sigilyph. Yawn can also prove to be useful, functioning as a pseudo-phazing move, though it can sometimes interfere with Scald. Quagsire can also opt for a specially defensive spread so that it can beat Calm Mind users with greater ease; however, it's best to use Quagsire to wall physical attackers, not special attackers.

Quagsire often lures in Grass-types, and as such, Sap Sipper Pokemon, such as Miltank and Bouffalant, make great partners for their ability to absorb these threats' STAB moves. Fire-types also work as acceptable partners for their ability to dispose of Grass-types; Moltres and Entei are good choices, as Quagsire can take any Rock-type moves aimed at them. Ironically, Quagsire can even work well with Grass-types themselves. Amoonguss is useful for its ability to cover Quagsire's Grass-type weakness, while Roselia can set up Spikes or Toxic Spikes to help Quagsire stall. Defensive Steel-types, such as Magneton, work quite well with Quagsire too, as they can take Grass-type moves aimed at it and it can sponge the Fire-type attacks that they loathe. Status afflictions severely cripple Quagsire, as it will be unable to stay in and repeatedly tank hits. To fix this issue, pairing Quagsire up with Aromatherapy users, such as Clefable and Roselia, can prove to be useful.

[Other Options]

Water Absorb is a great ability, as it allows Quagsire to counter Kabutops; however, Quagsire relies on Unaware to establish a niche in RU, so Water Absorb is generally not recommenced. Ice Punch can be used to hit Grass-types on the switch, but it's too weak to warrant much use. Stone Edge can be used to OHKO Moltres and Scyther. Due to Unaware ignoring Attack boosts, Swagger can be used to annoy the opponent. Quagsire often finds itself 2HKOed by quite a few physical attackers, so it can utilize Counter to get a surprise KO on Pokemon such as Medicham. Curse can be used in an attempt to sweep, though this version of Quagsire is prone to luring in Toxic and Scald users. Protect can do a few things: help Quagsire Toxic stall (especially when entry hazards are down), accumulate Leftovers recovery, and scout the moves of its opponent. Finally, Stockpile boosts both of Quagsire's defenses, which can make it impenetrable after a few boosts should the opponent lack strong Grass-type attacks or Toxic.

[Checks and Counters]

Grass-types have no difficulty inflicting large amounts of damage on Quagsire. Sceptile, Lilligant, and even Ferroseed, can use Quagsire as setup bait. Although, all three must be wary of Encore. Amoonguss and Roselia are solid defensive Grass-types that counter Quagsire, as their immunity to Toxic and great bulk prevents it from harming them. Speaking of Toxic, the status move can render Quagsire almost useless, as it will greatly deteriorate Quagsire's walling capabilities. Magic Guard Pokemon, such as Clefable and Sigilyph, do not care about anything Quagsire can do and can either set up on it, should it lack Encore, or inflict heavy damage. A lot of physical attackers have difficulty switching in on Quagsire due to Scald; however, Hariyama isn't one of them, as it can take advantage of the Scald-inflicted burn to acquire a Guts boost and destroy Quagisre with Close Combat. Medicham and Escavalier are both powerful enough to plow right through Quagsire, though they won't enjoy a burn. Finally, Pokemon that carry Grass-type coverage moves can beat Quagsire; Galvantula, Cinccino, and Omastar are all examples of such Pokemon.

Toxic as main slash on the physically defensive set.... Yawn doesn't really cut it at all and Toxic atleast cripples some mons that you can't touch otherwise (Slowking, Tangrowth, Alomomola)

I agree Curse sucks, but if you decide to keep it i'd change the nature to Careful because Calm lowers attack.

Mention Stockpile in other options because its fairly decent and Quag can really annoy a lot of teams with Stockpile

Some checks and counters off of the top of my head: Amoongus and Roselia because of Toxic immunity. Most Grass-types can check. Hates status so Wisp / Toxic will wear it down.

Does this really need an update ?_? Not much changed since BW1

I know this is a WIP but i have a few comments that i'd like to contribute right away :).

Agreeing with August that Toxic should probably be the first slash on the physically defensive set, its usually the move that i use and the one i find most effective overall to be honest. Encore seems pretty interesting actually, i have to test that out sometime to see how it does lol (didnt know it learned it). Yawn seems kinda strange to me and i'd probably put it either last in the slash order or in the AC (i actually haven't seen yawn quagsire in action, so if you feel Yawn should be in the second or first slash instead of the third just provide me and the rest of QC with some logs of it being effective and we'll see what we think :).

You should probably mention that although Gallade is one of the few good defensive checks to SD Gallade, that Gallade can always use Leaf Blade to OHKO it if need be, and if the Gallade happens to be a Life Orb varient it can actually 2HKO Quagsire with CC iirc lol.

I agree that the curse set is really bad and probably shouldn't be listed, its always been crit/toxic/burnbait from what i've seen, and Quagsire really needs the physical bulk to perform its role effectively tbh, the ease of which Quagsire can be forced out and its somewhat mediocre special bulk doesnt help Curse Quag's case either :/.

Lastly maybe give Swagger a little mention in OO? Its pretty gimmicky but it lets Quagsire force a few switches and daze potential switchins such as Sceptile on the switch. Unaware allows Quagsire to avoid any boosts the opponent may have accumulated from repeated swaggers as well, which it also a plus.

[Overview]
 • The reason why Quagsire is inferior to other waters like Alomomola is because it has surprisingly bad bulk. It gets 2HKOed or nearly 2HKOed by a lot of things, which makes it have to Recover often and slows down its team's momentum.
 • Basically the only reason to use it is if you have limited team slots left and need to counter both physical and special setup sweepers (Kabutops, Absol, Gallade, Sigilyph, Uxie, etc.)
 • Quagsire is pretty mediocre and should drop to NU, so you need to emphasize these things and don't try to sell the mon

[SET]
 • Yawn to AC
 • Mention Ice Beam in AC for Sigilyph, Druddigon, and hitting Grass-type switch-ins
 • Focus on strong cores in AC, since Quagsire should be a part of one on a defensive-oriented team

water absorb (perfect kabutops counter), ice punch, and stone edge to OO

specially defensive ev spread in either oo or ac

Clefable and Sigilyph to checks and counters

just be sure to mention that while stuff like medicham and escavalier hate hate hate burns, they are strong enough to blow straight through quagsire

realllllly stress how toxic wrecks it

mention heal bell support sine it hates status so much

remove this: quagsire really needs the support of Fire / Water / Grass cores to work well and should be centered around that, not the other way around. i don't think you have to say that quagsire really needs the support of a FWG core because FWG cores are kinda overrated and quagsire is perfectly capable of performing well without one

change this to a better example: rapid spin support is helpful, as even unboosted, gallade has a small chance to 2HKOes quagsire after stealth rock

a 1.17% chance is definitely not enough to warrant rapid spin support lol. i would rather mention that quagsire has trouble with spikes and tends to attract pokemon who set spikes (roselia and ferroseed) so using it in conjunction with a spinner is recommended.

just change those and qc approved 2/3, gj so far

Looks alright so far. Unique niche but very limited.

Add Protect on Other Options to scout grass attacks randoms and help to avoid 2HKOed by LO hard hitters, also if is paired with Toxic Spikes or Toxic support is neat.

Grass-types have no difficulty inflicting large amounts of damage on Quagsire. Of them, Sceptile, Lilligant and even Ferroseed can use Quagsire as set(space)up bait. TAlthough all three must be wary of Encore. Amoonguss and Roselia are solid defensive Grass-types that counter Quagsire, as their immunity to Toxic and great bulk prevents Quagsire from harming them. Speaking of Toxic, the status move cans render Quagsire useless, as ithey (Keep the subject and pronoun the same in terms of numbers [singular; plural].) will deteriorate Quagsire's walling capabilities. Magic Guard Pokemon, (AC) such as Clefable and Sigilyph, (AC) do not care about anything Quagsire can do and can either set(remove space)up on it or inflict heavy damage. A lot of physical attackers have difficulty switching in on Quagsire due to Scald; however, Hariyama isn't one of them, as Hariyama can take advantage of the Scald-inflicted burn to acquire a Guts boost and destroy Quagisre with Close Combat. Medicham and Escavalier are both powerful enough to plow right through Quagsire, though they won't enjoy a burn. Finally, Pokemon that carry Grass-type coverage moves can beat Quagsire; Galvantula, Cinccino, and Omastar are such Pokemon.

Sorry, I'm not providing a c/p because I think that writers need to see their mistakes and read the comments the checkers gave them. Also because if writers don't agree with one of the changes, they can argue against them instead of blindly implementing them. Other than that, excellent work!

EDIT: Please ignore all of my "setup" and "set up" changes. I got mixed up with the two, "setup" is the adjective, while "set up" is the verb. Sorry :(

[Overview]

When one thinks of a bulky Water-type in RU, Quagsire isn't the first Pokemon that comes to mind, and it shouldn't be. However, Quagsire it does have one saving grace: its ability Unaware. Like other bulky Water-types, Quagsire can deal with Pokemon such as Aggron, Entei, and Aerodactyl, but Unaware gives Quagsire it the added benefit of being able to take on Calm Mind users, such as Uxie, while also being a good check to Swords Dance Gallade, among other dangerous stat-boosting Pokemon. Keep in mind, though, that while Quagsire can work in the right situations, its walling capabilities are far too specific to be considered on most teams. So when deciding on a bulky Water-type, there are plenty of other options to consider over Quagsire.

[SET COMMENTS]

With Recover and Unaware, Quagsire has the ability to wall threatening setup sweepers such as Swords Dance + Lum Berry Gallade [You already mentioned Gallade. Mention someone else. Also, mention more than one to demonstrate how useful Quagsire can be]. Scald is Quagsire's most important attack, as it patches up its Defense by potentially crippling a physical attacker with a burn. Earthquake is Quagsire's best shot at inflicting any serious damage to Fire-types, such as Magmortar and Entei, while making good use out of its higher Attack stat. Toxic works exceptionally well with Recover, as the combination gives Quagsire the opportunity to outstall a plethora of defensive Pokemon, such as Slowking and Uxie. Finally, Encore works well by snatching momentum away from setup sweepers and team supporters who attempt to set up on Quagsire. Encore also helps to stop Lilligant and Sceptile from boosting, forces an entry hazard users such as Steelix into using Stealth Rock, and potentially limits dual screens users, such as Uxie, to one screen.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Quagsire can acquire a few other moves to use in the final slot. Ice Beam can be used to dent Grass-type switch-ins, Druddigon, and offensive Sigilyph. Yawn can also prove to be useful, functioning as a pseudo-phazing move, though it can sometimes interfere with Scald. Quagsire It can also opt for a specially defensive spread so that it can beat Calm Mind users with more ease; however, it's best to use Quagsire to wall physical attackers than special attackers [Why is this the case? Wouldn't you think the Scald burns would help accommodate for the lack of physical bulk against physical sweepers?].

Quagsire often lures in Grass-types, and as such, Sap Sipper Pokemon, such as Miltank and Bouffalant, make great partners for their ability to absorb those attacks their STABs and Leech Seed. Fire-types also work as acceptable partners for their ability to dispose of Grass-types; Moltres and Entei are good choices for Fire-type partners, as Quagsire can take any Rock-type moves aimed at them. Ironically, Quagsire can even work well with Grass-types themselves. Amoonguss is useful for its ability to cover Quagsire's Grass-type weakness, while Roselia can set up Spikes or Toxic Spikes to help Quagsire stall. Defensive Steel-types, such as Magneton, work quite well with Quagsire too, as they can take Grass-type moves aimed at it while Quagsire can sponge the Fire-type attacks that it they loathes. Status afflictions severely cripple Quagsire severely, as it will be unable to stay in and repeatedly tank hits. To fix this issue, pairing Quagsire up with Aromatherapy users, such as Clefable and Roselia, can prove to be useful.

[Other Options]

Water Absorb is a great ability, as it allows Quagsire to counter Kabutops by giving it a handy Water-type immunity; however, Quagsire relies on Unaware to establish a niche in RU, so Water Absorb is generally not recommenced. Ice Punch can be used to hit Grass-types such as Lilligant on the switch, outside of this though, but it's too weak to warrant much use. Stone Edge can be used allows Quagsire to OHKO Moltres and Scyther, which is always useful. Due to Unaware ignoring Attack boosts, Swagger can be used to annoy the opponent. Quagsire often finds itself 2HKOed by quite a few physical attackers, so Quagsire it can utilize Counter to get a surprise KO on Pokemon such as like Medicham. Curse can be used in an attempt to sweep, though this version of Quagsire is prone to luring in Toxic users and Scald burns. Protect can do a few things: help Quagsire Toxic stall (especially when entry hazards are down), accumulate Leftovers recovery, and scout the moves of its opponent. Finally, Stockpile boosts both of Quagsire's defenses, which can make it impenetrable after a few boosts should the opponent lack strong Grass-type attacks and Toxic.

Nicely written analysis. There's only one problem that I found within the write-up. You mention Quagsire way too much. Like, to an extent that makes the reading painful. Use "it" more often to relieve of this pain, otherwise, good job.

Overview:

However, Quagsire it does have one saving grace: its ability Unaware.

This should remain as Quagsire. Technically speaking, you can't use "it" (or "him" or "her") to refer to possessives. You just want to be clear who you are talking about in this case.

added benefit of being able to take on Calm Mind users, such as Uxie, while also being a good check to Swords Dance Gallade, among other dangerous stat-boosting Pokemon.

A more concise and better worded way to put this is like so:

added benefit of being able to take on Calm Mind users, such as Uxie, as well as Sword Dance users, such as Gallade.

I'm very particular about using the word "while". In this case, it sounds like Quagsire is checking Uxie and Gallade at the same time. This is not the case; Quagsire can check Uxie and Gallade, but these are separate instances. Therefore, "as well as" is the better phrase. "while also being" also just sounds awkward.

Additional Comments

Keep "Quagsire can also opt...". You want to re-mention the Poke you are talking about.

Amoonguss is useful for its ability to cover Quagsire's Grass-type weakness, while and Roselia can set up Spikes

Here, "while" makes it sound like you can only choose one: Amoonguss or Roselia. I don't know much about the tier, but I would guess a good team can still be made with both. Therefore, "and" is the better word.

Quagsire too, as they can take Grass-type moves aimed at it while , and Quagsire can sponge

Checks and Counters

Of them, Sceptile, Lilligant,[comma] and even Ferroseed,

Other than that, nice job everyone.
