Dugtrio [Life Orb] [QC: 0/3]

3 Heads are better than one

Code:
Why this deserves to be on site:

- Always beats Blissey 1 v 1
- Has the immediate raw power, so it isnt crap
- Doesn't rely on super-effective hits for solid damage input
- Strong Sucker Punch lets it pick off wekened threats like Choice Thundurs-T and Jolteon
- Arena Trap makes Choice Band great, since it almost always secures the revenge kill
- Memento makes it great, so when its work is done, its not useless
- Still OHKOes Tyranitar and Ninetales with Earthquake
- Isn't utter crap against health Politoed: 252 Atk Choice Band Dugtrio Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Politoed: 225-265 (58.59 - 69.01%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
[SET]
name: Life Orb
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Stone Edge
move 3: Sucker Punch
move 4: Stealth Rock / Memento
item: Life Orb
ability: Arena Trap
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
  • Choice Band means immediate power
  • Earthquake 2HKOes Politoed, and OHKOes Tyranitar with some prior damage + barely OHKO Ninetales (95% = minimum)
  • Earthquake is main STAB and hits pretty hard
  • Arena Trap eases prediction making it a more flexible revenge killer
  • Stone Edge is beast since it forms EdgeQuake combination
  • Sucker Punch is to take out faster foes and Choice Scarf users when significantly weakened
  • Stealth Rock is Stealth Rock
  • Memento rounds off the set providing a nice little aftermath allowing something like Shell Smash Cloyster to set-up and sweep the opponent's team.
[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
  • Facade allows Dugtrio to act like Poison status absorber, and hits really hard. Return is an option too, but is generally too weak and both don't hit anything that notable harder
  • Choice Band, but leaves Dugtrio set-up bait, after revenge killing
  • Rock Slide
  • Night Slash is good on paper, but a super-effective night slash is outdamaged by a neutral earthquake
  • Pursuit if you're nuts about Gengar
  • Dugtrio should support its team, others really shouldn't support it but it apprecitaes Tyranitar weakened a bit, since it can score a nice KO with the aforementioned prior damage
  • pairs up nicely with tornadus
  • this set functions best on rain teams, but can work on sun teams, but 248 HP politoed will have to be at half health for dug to KO
  • ariel ace if you hate breloom and virizion
  • softens toed for tyranitar to pursuit on sand teams
  • lol, dont use sand force, arena trap is the only reason you want to use dugtrio in ou, and if you want a sand force user, hippo is there

It pairs up really nice with Tornadus because it's guaranteed to OHKO Specially defensive rachi after a tornadus u-turn, same for tyranitar.
Might also be worth mentioning it OHKO's standard tentacruel over half of the time.

Im kinda torn on this set. On the one hand, there is nothing inherently wrong with this set, it does its job, and thats that. On the other hand, whenever I use this set, I always find myself wanting sash or something, for the survivability, as well as the fact that im not utter set up fodder with this set, which really turns me off as whenever I tested it, Dragonite, Landorus-I, Landorus-T, Gyarados, anything with a Ground immunity etc would switch in and get a free boost.... and that ticked me off to no end. Would welcome QC input on this due to my polarizing opinions on this set.

Yea, I know. That ticks me off too, but it's pretty much there to revenge kill, however, I've been thinking that I want to switch Choice Band to Life Orb because of this. You don't lose too much power, but you can use Stealth Rock and not be crap set-up bait to these Pokemon, so I will change this to Life Orb soon. I don't really like Choice Band that much either :(

not ohkoing ttar after rocks is kind of shit, but i guess you can still sub reversal with LO?? sounds like bullshit though.

Banned deucer.
A lot of your AC moves seem like purely OO material (sand force too). SR seems viable, except since you can't force a switch, your trapped enemy has no choice but to stay in and attack/set up, which will likely lead to your death or something else bad. (Unless you trapped a chansey/blissey/choiced electric move.)

with the possible exception of HP fire for sun teams, although that still seems a bit sketchy (do sun teams even mind them all that much?)

You never actually mention LO as an option but then reference it, might want to do that

It's weird how you mention a pursuit trapper for toed, both because tar and scizor aren't great at pursuit trapping it and because either you have a ttar already, another weather, or a hippo (i wouldn't use CB duggy with hippo, bad synergy type and concept wise generally). Maybe mention how he softens toed for tar to pursuit, and that Scizor can do this for other weathers

Yea, I'ma just make Life Orb the main option. I did some more testing and Life Orb is better, since you can go with rocks, and memento when you want, sucker punch, so you aren't set-up bait after. Pretty pathetic.

EDIT: Also, I made your changes tehy, and i made the set life orb since cb sux

Don't like LO

Missing out on OHKOing Tyranitar really sucks (after SR as welL) especially when you factor in Sash succeeding provided SR isn't up. Like, I guess LO / CB are not terrible sets, but do they really deserve a set on their own, and to what degree would you use them over Sash set, which is prolly its best set. I don't have a problem ACing in CB on the sash set, with a line about how its useful for getting key KOs on specially defensive Jirachi, Tenta, Tar etc (with a line also mentioning the negatives of CB such as set up fodder) but as far as giving LO / CB a full set on its own.... I am unconvinced.

Opening up the floor to any decent battlers that have actually used CB / LO sets and found them highly successful because I personally never had any success and thus would likely reject unless anyone can convince me otherwise.

I have used CB Dugtrio extensively, and i agree that it is OO material. It has its use, (OHKOing offensive Starmie with Sucker Punch after SR and OHKOing Jirachi with little residual damage) but is very situational and the vast amount of times you will want to have Sash + Reversal.

Thanks for listening to me but

Night slash really is worthless, all i can think of is for SubDisable gengar (Since you now have two sub-breaking moves)

Sand force similarly so, don't even mention it.

Really, what's the point of return, it's barely stronger than Stone Edge and while it is more accurate it eats a moveslot. If it's for Edgequake resistors, you can use Aerial Ace for the relevant ones

Stealth Rock should really not be the first slash on Life Orb Dugtrio. Really I don't think it should have it as a slash at all. Unlike Focus Sash Dugtrio, Life Orb Dugtrio can not set up SR in front of its trapped target. Life Orb Dugtrio can only set up SR after its killed its target, where it is susceptible to being revenged killed / set up on.

Honestly if you are not using Memento, you're doing it wrong. The whole point of using Life Orb Dugtrio in addition to its increased power is to prevent it from becoming setup bait, which is where changing up moves and Memento come in. Let me explain the beauty of Memento though: Dugtrio will nearly always get it off in front of the opponent because of its crazy high speed. Not only does it prevent your opponent from countersweeping you, but it gives you the chain of trapped counter to pokemon x ---> Memento ---->>> set up with pokemon x on Memento'ed pokemon ---->>> sweep. Some ideal pairs include Life Orb QD Volcarona, CM Latios, and Substitute Tornadus-I. Sometimes I find myself saving Dugtrio for latter, bringing it in on a U-turn, and then "sniping" a Pokemon to Memento on so another sweeper can set up. I really can not understate why Memento >>>>>>>>>>>>>> SR, it allows for easy sweeps once a Pokes counter has been trapped.

EDIT: A good example of what you can do with Memento here.
