Analysis:

Gen 6 has gifted us with one of the pairs of the very odd version exclusive Fairy Types, a new type that has been introduced to balance out the Dragon Type, while also giving some new usage to the currently almost situational Poison and Steel Types, that were once known useful for only their STAB power; however, that changes today.

Most Fairy Types, other than Sylveon, Florges, and Clefable are often called mediocre nowadays. Slurpuff, however, has a few tricks up it's sleeve to keep it's new rivals from getting the long end of the stick. With a balanced BST Total of atleast 470, you'll have to wonder; "How is this UU Tier material?".

Well, first, let's go into it's movepool first: Slurpuff has access to some decent form of recovery, unlike it's Ubersternmann cousin, Aromatisse, in the form of Draining Kiss; a move that recovers at least 3/4's (75%) the damage dealt from the opponent, and restored to Slurpuff. While it is pretty nifty, the only problem is that Draining Kiss has low BP, which is 50.

But that isn't the rest. Slurpuff also is the only Pokemon as of now who has access to both Unburden and Belly Drum; when both are combined, along with a Sitrus Berry, it even rivals the likes of Azumarril for best Belly Drum Sweeper.

Other moves included in Slurpuff's Movepool include Wish, Aromatherapy, Safeguard, Calm Mind, and Cotton Guard, which is an obvious sign between Offensive Cleric, and Boosting Wall.

While Slurpuff has average stats, don't let it's sticked out tongue fool you; it knows how to play a good darn Heav-erh, Sweeper.

[Pros]
  • Slurpuff possesses excellent typing in just pure Fairy alone.
  • It's one of the most physically defensive Fairies with 82/86/75 defenses.
  • It packs a great utility movepool including Dual Screens, Aromatherapy, Wish, etc, including a decent Special and Physical movepool (Flamethrower, Draining Kiss, Rough Play, etc), including Recovery.
  • Sweet Veil provides immunity sleep, even in Singles, which is wonderful for countering support Pokemon (Although, Unburden is the superior ability, unless in Doubles)
  • It can pass high HP Wishes.
  • It's faster than Aromatisse and Umbreon.
  • Belly Drum + Unburden. That is all.
[Cons]
  • It's just a hair to slow from other UU Pokemon.
  • Slurpuff lacks the incredible special defense of other Fairy-types, such as Florges (Although, Calm Mind can mitigate this).
  • It doesn't have any way to deal with Priority (It doesn't have any, unlike Azumarill, in that matter either).
  • It's "balanced" stats are in the Master Of None category, and leave more to desire.

Potential Sets:

[COMPLETED AND QC APPROVED!] Belly Drum Fairy Floss Knight (Probably RU - OU)

Slurpuff @ Weakness Policy / Sitrus Berry
Unburden
- Belly Drum
- Play Rough
- Return
- Flamethrower

Nature: Naughty
EVS: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 76 SpA / 176 Spe

Slurpuff is the only Pokemon with access to both Belly Drum and Unburden, a combination that gives it a niche as a physical sweeper. The goal of this set is to bring Slurpuff in on something it can force out (such as a Choice-locked Dragon-type attack), use Belly Drum, eat the Sitrus Berry to restore 25% of Slurpuff's health and activate Unburden, and then sweep.

Play Rough is a pretty solid physical STAB; after a Belly Drum boost, it hits just about anything that doesn't resist it for major damage. Return is unfortunately the only other powerful physical move that Slurpuff has, but it does hit the majority of Poison- and Fire-type Pokemon that resist Play Rough for neutral damage. That's about the extent of Slurpuff's good physical movepool, so Flamethrower is chosen for the last slot because it is Slurpuff's best weapon against Steel-type Pokemon. If you hit them with Flamethrower on the switch, many bulky Steel-type Pokemon can be knocked out, opening up for a Belly Drum sweep later.

The EV spread is designed primarily to maximize Slurpuff's physical power and give it enough speed to outrun everything up to Choice Scarf Rotom-W after Unburden has been activated. The 4 HP EVs give Slurpuff an even HP number to ensure that the Sitrus Berry will always activate after Belly Drum is used, while the Special Attack EVs and Naughty nature give Slurpuff's Flamethrower enough power to 2HKO physically defensive Skarmory, 2HKO standard Ferrothorn, OHKO Forretress, and OHKO Choice Band Scizor 81.25% of the time after Stealth Rock damage.

A Naive nature could also be used to outspeed even some of the fastest Choice Scarf users after the Unburden boost, but the power loss is noticeable. Since the Sitrus Berry can only activate once, you only have one shot to sweep with this set. Slurpuff needs as much prior damage against the opponent as it can get to assist its sweep, so entry hazard support is a must. Ferrothorn is notable for covering Slurpuff's weaknesses and providing both Stealth Rock and Spikes support. Rotom-W is another viable teammate since it can cover Slurpuff's Steel weakness, cripple physical attackers with Will-O-Wisp to ease setup, and get Slurpuff in safely with a slow Volt Switch. Since Slurpuff relies on good prediction with Flamethrower to beat Steel-types, Magnezone can assist by trapping and removing those Steel-type checks, alleviating the need for Flamethrower.

Name: Cleric (Doubles)

Slurpuff @ Leftovers
Ability: Sweet Veil
EVs: 36 SpA / 252 HP / 216 SpD/Def

Bold / Calm Nature
- Wish
- Draining Kiss
- Aromatherapy / Toxic
- Flamethrower / Psychic

This is going to be Slurpuff's (Other) Staple Set In Doubles, and it's mostly going to be it's main job; Cleric and stall like it's no tomorrow. With a boosted Draining Kiss, and Wish, it can hold off a bunch of attacks easily with one fell swoop. Aromatherapy is for further making your fairy floss even more powerful as a cleric, while Toxic is just there if you want to stall even further.

You will have to choose a coverage move to deal with Steel/Poison Pokemon, respectively, while also adding more depth into annoying the enemy with well placed attacks; Flamethrower is for dealing with Steel Types, along with Pokemon who have no resistance to Fire with a High Attack stat, or Psychic, when dealing with Poison Types more often, along with Fighting Types who are not affected by Draining Kiss, or when low on PP. Sweet Veil is only viable, because it leaves Slurpuff's Allies immune to Sleep Powder, Spore, or any other Sleep Causing Move.

Using a Modest Nature will further increase Draining Kiss' power, along with Flamethrower/Psychic's, but it proves rather ineffective. Instead, choosing Defenses over Attack (Such as Bold or Calm) prove rather effective with Wish instead.

Name: Calm Mind (Fairy Floss Knight)

Slurpuff @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Unburden
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 HP / 4 Def
Modest / Timid Nature
- Calm Mind
- Draining Kiss / Dazzling Gleam
- Energy Ball / Surf / Thunderbolt
- Flamethrower / Psychic

Calm Mind is also another viable set of Slurpuff; pretty much, Unburden, along with a Kebia / Babari Berry will keep it's Weaknesses under control, but a Weakness Policy will completely make it a monster to deal with; along with adding more Speed, allowing it to outspeed most of the current tier, with 160+ Boosted Speed.

Modest or Timid will amplify Slurpuff's already great SpA/Speed respectively, and when combined with Calm Mind + Activated Weakness Policy and Unburden, it can become a very powerful Fairy Type Sweeper. Flamethrower, Energy Ball, Thunderbolt, Surf, and Psychic are all viable coverage move/

Fairy Floss Knight W/ Petaya Berry
Slurpuff @ Petaya Berry
Unburden
- Calm Mind
- Substitute
- Draining Kiss / Dazzling Gleam
- Surf / Thunderbolt / Flamethrower

"It's Sub-Pataya Empo--err, Slurpuff! Come in on a resist or your Dragon immunity, set up and substitute and grab any Calm Mind Boosts you can. Once your HP drops low enough, Pataya will activate and boost your SpA further.

Unburden will also activate, effectively putting you at +1/+2 on top of any CM boosts so you can sweep. Draining Kiss will allow you to restore your HP as you sweep but Dazzling Gleam has better power. Final move is for coverage. Fairy/Water is excellent neutral coverage, so Surf is the best option.

Double Boostin' Groosin' Fairy Floss Knight 2.0: Electric Boogaloo; Weakness Policy Edition

Slurpuff @ Weakness Policy
Unburden
- Calm Mind
- Cotton Guard
- Draining Kiss
- Aromatherapy / Substitute / Coverage Move

The idea would be to start boosting up your defence's ridiculously high (hopefully on a choiced Dragon move), Draining Kiss when you need to recover, and continue boosting until both your defenses and Draining Kiss gain enough power to sweep a team.

Aromatherapy and substitute are there to stop status from stopping your reign of terror (each having different strengths and weaknesses over the other, of course).

But, I suppose another coverage move could be used to muscle through something that resists Draining Kiss and would otherwise wipeout a Slurpuff with too few Calm Minds to achieve adequate recovery.
* Vandaleyes

Checks and Counters:
  • Steel-types. Pokemon like Scizor, Skarmory, Aegislash, Excadrill, or Mawile can easily switch in and set up, and either stampede it with priority, or boosting moves.
  • Poison-types, such as Venusaur, Roserade, and Gengar. They can KO with STAB Sludge Bombs, but only fear Psychic, and in the case of both Roserade and Venusaur, Flamethrower.
  • Bulky set-up sweepers in general that don't fear Dazzling Gleam, Draining Kiss, etc (Volcarona, etc).
  • Vulnerable to Toxic without Aromatherapy.

Conclusion:

Slurpuff
has almost all the right tools a Cleric and Sweeper should have: High amount of HP to pass Wishe's with, decent defenses, Sweet Veil to protect from Sleep (Including other teammates, even in single tiers), and even Aromatherapy.

Including that, it's also a great niche in Calm Mind Sweeper and Belly Drummer W/ Unburden; however, our little Fairy-Floss Dragon slayer isn't without his flaws, as it cannot learn Moonblast, and has to compensate with Dazzling Gleam/Draining Kiss as main Fairy Moves, and while it only has 2 weaknesses, it's somewhat easy to counter, even with decent defenses.

Overall, I'm expecting to see more out of our little Cotton Candy Warrior this Gen, hopefully gaining the rightful title of RU, or even UU.

all hail slurpuff

would be interesting if sweet veil worked on itself and it instantly woke you up from rest >_<

I wonder how that interaction works in doubles/triples

He seems pretty cool, here's to hoping it gets a good egg group

I'm still wondering...

Does Gardevoir learn Draining Kiss, if this is the case? I mea-

*Finds out that the Ralts Family isn't in the Fairy Egg Group.

Gamefreak.

pls.

But aside from constant ranting, Draining Kiss is a very great move for Slurpuff, especially since it has BOTH Draining Kiss, AND Wish-meaning you can heal almost every turn, included with Leftovers-

Woah, I think I just had my Mind Blown for a second there.

(Yeah, Slurpuff is going to be a great cleric this Gen)

Dazzling Gleam should be used over Draining Kiss on the CM Unburden set. Kiss's 50 BP isn't going to do anything with its mediocre SpA stat. It needs the power of Dazzling Gleam.

Also, Surf + Flamethrower are the best coverage for that set as along with Dazzling Gleam the combo is only resisted by Tenta, Qwilfish, and Skrelp.

EDIT: Also it really needs the full 252 EVs in Spe to outspeed anything. It's slower than Drifblim who runs a similar-ish Unburden set and also usually uses full Spe EVs.

I guess it should be used, but then again, you won't get any recovery with Dazzling Gleam, so I'll just leave both in with eachother.

Anyone knows if the ability protects Slurpuff as well as the ally?
The flavour text makes it seem like it does, in that case it's basically a buffed Insomnia which is pretty cool.

Shroomisaur

Smogon's fantastical fun-guy.
For starters, Serebii's listed stats are:

82 / 80 / 86 / 85 / 75 / 72

I've been looking into Slurpuff lately, his stats are forgettable at best but there's potential. The Cleric set is unfortunately something that every Fairy like Sylveon or Florges can do, it has slightly more physical bulk but is likely outclassed due to low special stats. I think the only way Slurpuff can really differentiate itself from them is by utilizing Unburden. The set in the OP can't guarantee that Unburden will activate, so I'd go with a set like:

Slurpuff @ Pataya Berry
Unburden
- Calm Mind
- Substitute
- Draining Kiss / Dazzling Gleam
- Surf / Thunderbolt / Flamethrower

It's Sub-Pataya Empo--err, Slurpuff!

I don't see any way in which this can be UU when Clefable is around, with superior overall stats except for speed, a massively useful ability, a better movepool and reliable recovery (Wish isn't reliable)... and we don't even know if Clefable is UU material yet! Sure, Slurpuff has Aromatherapy, but so do Roserade and Shaymin which both have vastly superior stats (though both are grass types), reliable recovery / more powerful draining moves, more speed and power, and the fantastic Natural Cure. Roserade also has a Fairy-resistance and STAB Sludge Bomb to annihilate competition such as Slurpuff, while Shaymin's superior bulk, speed, power and ability let it be a far better supporter despite its more common and numerous weaknesses.

Slurpuff may see the dim light of RU, but the upper tiers are far beyond its reach unless UU suddenly becomes a Dragon clusterfuck like BW OU was.

Draining Kiss boosted +Unburden is reliable, especially since you heal 75% of damage done, unlike Drain Punch, which has more BP, yet, less recovery.

Who knows, maybe Slurpuff will deem the light of UU, just wait and see.

It's very possible that Clefable could be OU material. If so, Slurpuff has a chance to be in UU.

I think it has more potential than Aromatisse because it at least has a good ability.

Hmmm, well i'm not sure about OU, Clefable is outclassed by Reuniclus as a bulky Magic Guard user and by Alakazam as a magic guard sweeper, and by Sylveon as just a bulky Fairy type. But yeah, it outclasses Aromatisse and Slurpuff with its superior ability.

How would a double boosting set fair?
Calm Mind
Cotton Guard
Draining Kiss
Aromatherapy/Substitute/Coverage Move

Although supplementary leftovers recovery is tempting, not abusing unburden just feels wrong. Unfortunately, I'm still not sure which item would be ideal for this set. Weakness policy definitely comes to mind, raising the damage and recovery of this little guy, but perhaps a resisting berry or even sitrus berry would be best until slurpuff has enough defensive boosts under it belt? I will venture to say that sweet veil+leftovers+aromatherapy ensures that you will not ever be liable to sleep and have additional recovery in exchange for doubled speed but riskier status evasion. This is all just speculation though, what do you guys think?

Unfortunately, as much as I like the idea behind this set, I plain and simply don't see it having the stats to ever be OU. Phazers and bullet punchers in particular worry me. I think slurpuff will probably end up being low UU. (And for what it's worth, I can see Clefable being OU, but that's a different story)

This may not have much to do with the present discussion, but I personally think Slurpuff looks hideous. Not that I understand what its aesthetic value exactly has in a competitive battling, and hence I am bemused as to why the first post seemed to be making such a huge deal about somebody's personal preference for the Pokemon...?

Anyway, I doubt Slurpuff is getting higher than RU. It has thoroughly mediocre stats all around, and very little other than a decent cleric movepool and an ability that could be useful to pair with Rest (if it instaneously awakes Pokemon who have gone to rest while still allowing them to heal, which I honestly doubt). There are simply too many better Pokemon that can do everything Slurpuff can do, and better (namely, Clefable).

Unburden is an interesting option, but I find that even when it's fast, Slurpuff is middling at best and stuck between choosing to try to sweep with unexciting offenses, or trying to wall with forgettable defenses.

Prevents sleep. Meaning it can't sleep at all like insomnia

Slurpuff can run unburden + red card pretty well, allowing it to get rid of potential counters and gain another free turn of setup.
This is a REALLY cool idea man. What kind of spread/set will you run with unburden+red card? I am genuinely interested.

Belly Drum + Unburden is an interesting option for Slurpuff, though unlike its special movepool, its physical movepool doesn't have much variety.

Play Rough, maybe Thief, and... Substitute? Flamethrower?

Slurpuff @ Red Card
Ability: Unburden
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SAtk / 4 SDef
Modest Nature
- Cotton Guard
- Calm Mind
- Draining Kiss
- Thief

This set at the very least causes your opponent a world of problems. If you can use it well. I don't really bother with the speed evs. Most things that still outspeed it can't deal enough damage to deal with it after one Cotton Guard (or even two), the only notable exception being gengar. With a little ev investment you could actually get it to outspeed gengar but I haven't really done much in the way of maths. A better spread could probably be optimized once the threats in this meta are known. HP is really important since Slurpuff is pretty much mixed defending and SAtk is really important 'cause Draining Kiss stab is your method of sweeping. Thief seems gimmicky but phasing with Red Card, then stealing leftovers/life orb/whatever from your opponent is less than gimmicky in practice - and a huge benefit to you as well as a problem for your opponent.

Your method of play should be to switch Slurpuff in on something it can stall against, or will force a switch against. Predict your opponent's switch in and use Cotton Guard/Calm Mind accordingly. Use Cotton Guard/Calm Mind again as their "counter" hits you, and gets switched out by red card. And then the chances are whatever they're switched into can't fight you - feel free to use Cotton Guard/Calm Mind again, or get some HP back with Draining Kiss. At this point there isn't really much your opponent can do.

Pretty commonly I find my opponent tries to set up on me, then gets phased out by red card and swept by fully set up Slurpuff.

Yeah, Slurpuff is one of the most successful pokemon on my team. RU you say? We'll see.
