Most battles have it restricted to 2 recovers and 5 chills, although you can do it differently if you want. You'd also be more likely to get someone to battle you if you allow training items, and those won't affect how well you do in the battle, just the rewards afterwards. You also should post the queue, which consists of every battle that doesn't have the needed participants (missing a ref, a battler, or some combination thereof, or waiting for a subref).

You also can't post any challenges in the battle tower until you get at least 1 pokemon and have it approved.
