I’ve come up with another Pokémon idea
inspired by TV Tropes. This one is meant to be a legendary Pokémon inspired by
Beelzebub, the Lord of the Flies. This is a three-stage pseudo-legend line that’s absolutely ferocious on the defense. First up is Baalzegrub, the Maggot Pokémon!
Name: Baalzegrub
Type: Bug
Ability: Poison Heal/Immunity
Dream World Ability: Shed Skin
Generation of Origin: Gen V
Egg Group: Bug
Base Stats:
HP: 25
Attack: 25
Defense: 25
Special Attack: 25
Special Defense: 25
Speed: 25
Base Stat Total: 150
…Uh, yeah. Baalzegrub is just a joke. It’s a lot like Caterpie, Weedle, or Wurmple – only the completely paranoid would take it seriously. The only Pokémon it could beat one-on-one would be Sunkern… its evolution, Beelzekonch, the Chrysalid Pokémon, isn’t much better.
Name: Beelzekonch
Type: Bug/Rock
Ability: Regenerator/Shed Skin
Dream World Ability: Sturdy
Generation of Origin: Gen V
Egg Group: Bug
Base Stats:
HP: 80
Attack: 10
Defense: 100
Special Attack: 10
Special Defense: 90
Speed: 10
Base Stat Total: 300
Beelzekonch has great abilities, but its poor stats let it down. It’s little more than a wannabe Shuckle. Yeah, sure, the HP doesn’t suck, but Shuckle more than makes up for that with its vastly superior defenses. Like many cocoon-based Pokémon, the only thing notable about it is its defenses, which aren’t even strictly better than those of its evolved form, since the line is ultimately a defensive one. The only notable thing about it is its name, which refers to a conch, which was an important symbol in William Golding’s “
Lord of the Flies”. So while this line’s dang near-useless at early levels, it becomes a nasty foe when fully grown. The final stage is Beelzebeest, the Decay Avatar Pokémon!
Name: Beelzebeest
Type: Bug/Dark
Ability: Poison Touch/Tinted Lens
Dream World Ability: Hyper Reflexes (Evasion is boosted by 1 stage at the end of every turn.)
Generation of Origin: Gen V
Egg Group: Bug
Base Stats:
HP: 145
Attack: 90
Defense: 95
Special Attack: 90
Special Defense: 90
Speed: 90
Base Stat Total: 600
I was tempted to just call this guy “
Beelzeboss” and call it a day, but I didn’t want to rip off of
Tenacious D. So I made another reference to
Lord of the Flies, this one to the “beast” that turns out to just be the corpse of an ill-fated parachutist, but nonetheless ends up taking on mythical, demonic proportions to the boys stuck on the island. Ultimately, it ends up symbolizing their fall into the darker side of human nature, with only Ralph, Piggy, and Simon resisting the descent into savagery. Beelzebeest is essentially an enormous demonic fly, similar to certain depictions of Beelzebub. Other than HP, its stats are rather average. Its standard abilities are pretty good, but not really suited for a defensive role. The Dream World ability, on the other hand… dear God. Just like a real-world fly, Beelzebeest is incredibly adept at dodging attacks (despite its huge size), and not being good at taking hits is rather irrelevant if you never get hit in the first place, right? Granted, it’ll probably be banned in competitive matches, what with the evasion clause and all (though I could see it being used to take out Insego, assuming it can manage to avoid being wiped out in its first few turns on the field.) When the Evasion Clause isn’t in effect, though, you’d better bring Aerial Ace! (As a side note, I deliberately designed this family to change its ability with every evolution in order to mirror the Larvitar line, which does the same thing with Guts/
Sand Veil, Shed Skin, and Sand Stream/
Unnerve for Larvitar, Pupitar, and Tyranitar respectively – Dream World abilities in bold type.) Beelzebeest’s movepool also puts a big emphasis on survivability and stalling, all the better to rack up Hyper Evasion boosts and poison damage with (yeah, even though this line isn’t Poison-type, I still wanted to give it lots of Poison-type moves to correspond with real-world flies’ penchant for spreading filth and disease). So, here it is now…

…Yeah, I expected it to suck. With half the stats of Candito, Baalzegrub’s movepool is the only thing keeping it from being a bigger joke than the likes of Caterpie and Weedle. I mean, honestly, I think
Magikarp could probably beat it one-on-one (even if Baalzegrub has Recover, it’s not going to like the possibility of Magikarp packing Bounce). Beelzekonch is up next… and, no, I don’t expect it to surpass Shuckle in
anything except
maybe sweepiness by a slim margin (not like it’ll matter.) So, let’s move on to more laughing at an NFE Pokémon…

Nope, not getting anywhere. The Sweepiness ratings are ridiculously low (though, yes, a little higher than Shuckle’s thanks to being marginally faster), and it’s thoroughly outclassed by the majority of defensive Pokémon, including Shuckle (yes, even if it has Regenerator; 80/100/90 defenses just don’t cut it). Of course, in three-stage Bug lines, the first two forms are
never competent. The final form, on the other hand… okay, so Butterfree, Beedrill, Beautifly, and Dustox should never show their faces in a competitive environment unless they want to be brutally pwned, but they’re still decent enough for in-game use. Beelzebeest, on the other hand, is a pseudo-legendary and has the stats to match. No way it’s gonna be subpar, right?

O_o; Dear
God… the Base Stat Rating is just about 3 points shy of the 400 mark! That’s pretty scary. And when Hyper Reflexes, Roost, Toxic, and Beelzebeest’s other options for messing with the opposition come into the equation… why do I get the feeling that this monster fly would be assigned to the Uber tier in a heartbeat? Also, is it just me, or was my earlier hypothesis about Smogon favoring specialization horribly, horribly wrong? Either the metagame has changed much more drastically than anyone could anticipate since Generation IV, or there’s plenty of advantages to foregoing extreme strength in one area at the expense of being a pushover in another. After all, a Pokémon can get by with only one good offensive stat, but if one defensive stat is much better than the other, everyone’s going to go after the inferior defensive stat. *points to
Blissey being pummeled with physical attacks*
