I think meter and rhyme is incredibly important for something like this. Whenever I'm writing stuff like this (which, admittedly, isn't too often) I always imagine it being read by someone over the top of events, like a trailer [I'm not being very clear here]. Meter and rhyme adds to the tempo, and entrances the reader.
This cryptic style will suit NaNoWriMo perfectly...
