Metallica: The band's first two studio albums were great, their next two were good but steps down in quality. Everything after ...And Justice for All is pretty shit. The Black Album, people hate it for many reasons. Some people hate it because it's the band's sell out album (that's a reason I hate Metallica as a band today). I hated that album because IT'S NOT WHAT I FUCKING LIKED ABOUT METALLICA! Metallica was very in your face, aggressive, awesome and fast thrash metal. "Enter Sandman" isn't a bad song by any means, but it isn't that good either. It pales in comparison to the likes of "Whiplash", "Trapped Under Ice", and "Master of Puppets" for song examples. "Sad But True" comes play on The Black Album, and I couldn't take any of that bull shit of what became of a band I really loved.
About some months ago I decided to check out their latest single "The Day That Never Comes". Everybody was hyping that song up as well as Death Magnetic as the second coming of Metallica. With all the hype surrounding it, I was disappointed. "The Day That Never Comes" fucking sucked. Music wise, it sounded like a poor attempt to rehash the sound of their glory days (think of a modern day version of "One"). Lyric wise, the lyrics were so simple and wouldn't sound out of place in an emo rock or core song. "Love… is a four letter word, and never spoken here. Love… is a four letter word, here in this prison." I mean what the fuck James? The lyrics aren't as bad as let say "All Within My Hands" or "Invisible Kid", but James could do a whole lot better.
Megadeth: Part of the reasons I loved Metallica's first two albums the most was because of the stuff Dave wrote. Dave showed a lot of stuff to the rest of the band as well. Megadeth's first four albums are all fucking awesome. Countdown to Extinction and Youthanasia are good too, but notches down. Cryptic Writings had it's fair share of good songs too, but a lot of okay average and just plain boring was on that album. Risk and The World Needs a Hero is where I lost it. The System Has Failed had some surprising good material. It's kind of a shock that what was suppose to be Dave Mustaine's first solo album ended up a lot stronger than Megadeth's return to form album (The World Needs a Hero). The band let me down again on United Abominations, "Sleepwalker" is about the only memorable song on there. Endgame was steps up in quality from UA, but I like The System Has Failed better. "44 Minutes" is the best song Megadeth has written in years though.
So I prefer Megadeth > Metallica any day.
Slayer: I love Show No Mercy and Hell Awaits, as well as the band's EP Haunting the Chapel. Slayer gets real boring after Hell Awaits to me. While Reign in Blood is an important album, it really feels lacking from the band's third album, same with every other album after Reign in Blood. Not to mention, Kerry King's solos all sound the same and they are pretty bad. Seasons in the Abyss was another boring album, but Jeff was doing some different things with the guitar. Just hear his solo on the album's title track. I can see why people would like Slayer. They are not a BAD band, but I don't understand all the love for them much either.
