A set I truly fell for is:

Gengar @ Leftovers/Expert belt
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP/252 SAtk/252 Spe
Modest nature (+ SAtk, -Atk)
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball
- Substitute
- Pain split

Simply put a sub up and wail away at others, using pain split to heal. Blissey also falls for this gengar if she isnt carefull and lets you Sub your hp down to painsplit and then focus blast her. I sometimes run expert belt for the extra push needed for some kills :). Same goes with the possibility of runing Timid nature over Modest.

My epic Gengar

Gengar @ life orb
EVs 4 HP/252 SATK/252 speed
Timid nature (+Speed,-atk)
-Shadow Ball
-Focus Blast
-Destiny Bond
-Thunderbolt

Sweep with moves, destiny bond if i'm going to die (because of sandstorm, life orb, etc.) This set ensures i get a kill on a team

For that sub/pain split gengar, try timid with a life orb.
You can PS off recoil, and it helps you get kills, its more powerful than modest with leftovers, and ghost/fighting dosen't hit enough super effective for expert belt.

Usual Gengy, but I prefer Explosion as there's less guesswork involved then with Destiny Bond. 4 Atk EVs for a microscopic Explosion boost!

EVs: 6 HP/252 Sp.Attack/252 Spd
Moves:
Thunderbolt
Shadow Ball
Sludge Bomb
Will-O-Wisp

Awesome Sp.Sweeper.Almost as good as Alakazam.

glad gengar is rising. He makes a great lure for scizor and tyranitar with his sub/pain split/shadow ball/focus blast @ life orb. You don't need hp:fire, since focus blast does like 70%, and scizor takes a lot of stealth rock damage anyway (and i use spikes, so...)

I love Gengar :)

Sludge Bomb may be a viable option...
