Zombachu's way of explaining it:
How to Invest:
You may hear the terms "Stocks and Bonds" when people are talking about the economy. Well, what are stocks?
Stocks are a very minute portion of a company that you can buy on the stock market. Stocks either make you money, or make you lose it, so it's a big gamble. When a company does well and you own their stock, its value increases.
Example:
I bought 1 stock of the company "asdf" 2 days ago for $10. Yesterday they did well, and their stock rose up $0.50! So now my stock is worth $10.50!
But what if the company did poorly?
Example:
My company did bad today! They lost $0.25! So now my stock is worth $10.25!
If you think the stock will continue to drop below your buying point, now would be a good time to sell!
Example:
I don't want to risk having my stock drop below $10 (my buying point), so I should sell it! If I sell it now, I will earn $0.25!
Note: You do not earn money from the stock, unless you sell it.
Like a collector's item after 20 years doesn't pay you unless you sell it.
You may also buy it in bulk too, but the risk and payoff is greater.
How we're doing it:
On Smogon, this is how we are going to do it. Instead of real money, we are using § as currency. So instead of $10, it would be §10. We are also investing in teams, so instead of company "asdf", it would be TRC (Team Rocket Corp.), or TNL (Team Neutral). Everything else is basically the same. Do all the action on the trading floor and have fun!
Note: The group's activity makes the price, so don't invest in dead ones!
Other notes:
The group's activity is the variable for the price. Don't invest in dead ones!
You start off with only §1000 so use it wisely
You only gain the money when you sell your stock. If you still own the stock, then its value can increase, but you don't get the money until you sell it
Group leaders start off with 50 of their team's stock for free
Tips:
• Invest in groups you know will do well! Ones with no activity will make you lose money.
• It is a bad idea to sell stock that is less expensive than when you bought it. If the unfortunate does happen and it drops below your starting point, if you bought it in bulk, sell some but leave some in there just in case it goes up
• "Rig it". If you buy a stock, help that team out instead of just piggybacking on them.
Symbols:

↓=Stock price went down from the previous day
↨=Stock price is the same as the previous day
