oh yeah as for decent public channels... smogon irc has taken a bit of a dive but here are some popular and at least semi-decent ones - #warau / #grammar

well the community as a whole is on synirc (just a heads up if you didn't know!)
honestly the best channels are splinters which you get yourself eventually invited to as you establish yourself with a group of people (less clique-ish behaviour and more of just finding the people you like)
although i think you're pretty damn cool so just pop into #pokemon briefly and we'll talk briefly vis a vis splinters hint hint
