Flygon and Shuckle save the day!(an OU Warstory)

Hello, Smogon! This is my first post here, though I've read a lot on the forums. I've finally decided to register. That's not important, though.

This (Shoddy) battle took place on Saturday, October 11, 2008. Wow, I sound so formal. Anyway, I just lost to a battler named jacknak, and I wanted to finish playing after a win. I pressed the “Find Match” button and who should show up but jacknak again! I hoped I would win this time. (I'm not very good, as can be seen from my rating, which currently hovers around 1400-1450.)

My (Non-Smogonite's) team:

I'll show jacknak's team at the end, so you can have a better idea of what I was thinking.

Formatting info:

Scores will be posted after each fainted Pokémon in this format: the number of my Pokémon left (the ones he'd fainted; the ones he'd seen) - the number of jacknak's Pokémon left (the ones I'd fainted; the ones I'd seen).

HP left and status for the Pokémon involved will be posted after each turn. They'll be in italics and color-coded.(by the way, some of the percentages may seem a bit off, but I included the excluded decimals of leftovers, burn, etc.)

Toxic will also have the number of turns it has had to build power.

Me and my Pokémon will be in green.

jacknak and his (I don't think “her”, do you?) Pokémon will be in blue. Also, his Dusknoir will have an asterisk (*) after it to distinguish it from mine.

Pokémon fainting will be in red.

Battle log will be bolded.

My commentary will be in regular font.

After-turn effects will not be omitted. (I just think that they do affect the battle, so they should be there.) However, for your convenience, their font size will be lowered and they'll be unbolded.

So it begins. Now, I just battled him now and Tyranitar beat up his Azelf with Crunch, so I'll take his (hopeful) switch for a chance to stat-up. Yeah, that's the "benefit" of battling someone twice in a row: you can have an idea of what they're going to do.

Ah. This is bad. I have almost nothing against bulky waters, and pretty much waters in general. Well, at least I got a boost. All I can think of doing is just breaking through its defenses with Stone Edge, since he'd figure out Dragon Dance, and 2 +1 Stone Edges do more than 1 +2 Stone Edge. I just hope it'll be enough.

Well, that's unlucky. I could have had a much better switch-in, but I guess I'll just go with what I've got. At this point, I don't want to send in Tyranitar because of the Calm Mind boost, since even with Sandstorm helping his Sp Def, Surf would really hurt, if he has that. I wonder if the Random Number Generator will allow me to somewhat ameliorate the bad switch-in with an attack boost (dumb move #1).

I'll try to make sure he either uses Nasty Plot again (yeah, right) or uses a move either a) weak against Shuckle to prevent Flygon from getting in or b) not too strong against Flygon.

So, in the end, it's Flygon who pulls through for me with less than 1/4 of his HP left and a Burn. Take that, Garchomp! You are NOT simply “better” than Flygon! And great game, jacknak.

Positive:

Flygon! For beating half of the opponent's team. And winning the game for me.
Shuckle! For being annoying and living on in Dusknoir's and Azelf's Toxics even after fainting, among other things. I love you, Shuckle!
Tyranitar. For Sand Stream's extra damage, which goes before Leftovers, thankfully (even though it hurt my team, too).
Sandstorm. For the Sp Def boost without which Shuckle wouldn't have survived (Azelf's Psychics).
Suicune... For demolishing my team... or my sanity...
Shoddy's Random Number Generator. For a lack of any real game-changing luck.
pokemonelite2000 and gamespot. For the sprites.
jacknak. For one of the best battles I've had. (sorry if it doesn't seem very good)

Negative:

Suicune. For demolishing my team and making me make many, many, many stupid mistakes.
Me. For sending Breloom up against a 3x boosted (though 0.5x resisted) Surf.
Me. For trying to use Meteor Mash on Suicune.
Basically everything I did or tried to do related to Suicune.
Me. For not having something to take care of Water Pokémon.
Me. For making so many stupid errors.
Me. For being so self-negative.

Neutral:

Some general luck on both sides. For having nothing to do with anything whatsoever.

Comments, critiques, etc. would be welcome. I'd prefer criticism on the warstory itself (commentary, formatting, et al), not the battle, which I admit is not up to par with others I've read and seen. I'm not asking for this to get sent to the Archive (if it's worthy, then I won't complain). I just want to get better at writing these. Thanks for reading all the way up to here!

By the way, about that Garchomp comment, that's just my opinion. It will be very controversial (and therefore irritating) to talk about. I'm just saying that Flygon has some things Garchomp doesn't, even if it's very few things. Most people would say that Garchomp does many (most?) things better, and I'd have to agree. Good thing, though: Flygon's allowed into OU!

This is certainly eye-catching (if that's the word I want...)

I read your warstory, seemed all right, and was about to post when I realised your warstory had almost entirely disappeared.

Did you use the 'remove formatting' button in the options tab?
Did you copy and paste this into MSNotepad before transferring it here?
Did the Enter key on your computer fall off?

Anyway, from what I can remember from seeing this before it disappeared, the battle is certainly more entertaining than most of mine, and on top of that it was quite funny, and I acknowledge your appreciation of Bugs like Flygon and Shuckle.

Oh, and I agree with you about Flygon and Garchomp's plus points. Flygon has better defensive qualities (80/80/80 + Roost = Yay!) in my opinion, and it also has U-Turn, can viably use special attacks and is generally a lot less predictable than Chomp. It is also immune to Toxic Spikes.

There you go, it's better now.

That was a very cool warstory. You had some pretty neat prediction skills there (like flamethrower on skymin, encore DD) and the comments were good.

Anyways, welcome to Smogon, I hope you enjoy it here.

EDIT: How slow is your Breloom, you might want to run more speed... Suicune usually has either 206 speed or max speed. Since this was a Surf/CM/Rest/Roar I assume it was 206. So if Breloom had Speed EVs it should have outrun.

Please, remove some information we don't need to see. Like leftovers and constant damage from stealth rocks

Make your comments in a different color. Perhaps BOLD the battle itself.

The comments were sometimes lacking. You simply restating the previous turn with no thought on the turn ahead.

With the "toxic stall" you can remove the turns and say. "The next X amount of turns was the same thing" and then go back to when it changes.
I'm working on it! It will take a while, though. Couple days, maybe.

looks better already
Thanks. I'm still working on colors. That's the biggest thing right now.

And, by the way, I just think I should keep the Leftovers, Sandstorm, etc. there for the people who want to read them. They really played a major role in this match. If you don't, well, that's why I deformatted them. It's just me being weird.

I'm not a fan of the UUs in OU is cool thing, but Shuckle is an exception. The formatting I see now is nice. Some of the moves were clever (an equal amount were dumb though). Overall the thing that made me enjoy this was the Flygon winning the match since people where saying that it couldn't turn a game around like Garchomp could.

EDIT- Change the health thingies back to black. It's hard to see at the moment.

Change the health thingies back to black. It's hard to see at the moment.
Thanks! I'll try that. It simplifies things, too!

Done. Is it any better? Did I miss anything?

Skiddle: I think I'll do that. Breloom is really my only defense against Waters with Seed Bomb. Thanks.

Woah!!

That's the way to do it!! I really love Flygon (it's my second favorite pokemon) And well I really think it was a really cool battle (except for the stall battle, but hey Flygon won)... Yeah I must use my Scarfgon Again. Thanks.

That was fun! I love seeing Flygon killing it.

I gotta say though, your opponent really let you back in the game by #1 letting Shuckle encore Sally, and #2 being greedy with all those DDs.

I have to commend you though, once he let you back into the match, you made him pay.

Tsukate: Ah, yes. I thought someone might say that. I would think that there wasn't much that he could switch to. Shuckle would just provide a safe switch for Metagross or Flygon regardless of who he switched to. He got himself a free switch by sacrificing Salamence.
Thanks for the feedback!

P.S. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's just that people severely (okay, maybe not severely, per se) underestimate Shuckle.

I was at work and couldn't be arsed to go find it... =/

That said, now that all the formatting issues are out of the way, this really was a good warstory. One of my beefs, though, was that he should have switched Heatran in on Metagross because there was no way Metagross would use attacks other than Meteor Mash or Ice Punch on Salamence, both of which are 4x resisted, and ScarfTran does deal massive damage to Metagross, plus giving a free turn, given that you really didn't have much against Heatran other than Flygon, which was your ace in the hole. It also could have helped to have Salamence around to finish off Flygon. All in all, that was the only real misplay, IMO. Well, that and how you handled Suicune. But then again, your team looks like it has issues with Cune anyway. You might consider speeding up Breloom a little bit.

Well...I wouldn't say people underestimate Shuckle. I think Encore and Toxic are the two biggest things to watch out for with the Shuck. I'll concede that it has more value then people give it credit for, but your opponent should have figured Encore was coming.

You played pretty bad in the beginning (e.g. You know Suicune's going to roar when it wakes up, why even substitute = lose health + waste a turn when you could have got an extra swords dance or seed bomb in?), but yah, your opponent kind of let you come back and you didn't disappoint him. That's what made this story pretty interesting. Your Flygon was certainly quite surprising as well.

Thanks, and I agree. I really did play badly in the beginning, but these comments should help me get better. Anything about the Warstory itself and not the battle?

Excellent warstory, it was a thoroughly enjoyable read. The game was well played, predictions were hot, and your formatting was spot on. It was good to see a warstory where someone had taken the time to make it outstanding, instead of a quick job with Warmachine (no offence intended to the artic one, Warmachine is great, but if people take the time the warstories look more aesthetically pleasing).

Great job. Oh and the Suicune thing - I sometimes run 140 Spe EVs on my Crocune just to get the edge on Breloom and Metagross, so it isn't unheard of.

GG

I love this story! Shuckle is an underated pokemon and with good prediction skills and with a good trainer he is anoying and useful supporter aand is #fact# more bulkir than cresila with the right evs and in a snadstorm.

Thank you for proving shuckles usefulness.

I'm surprised this Warstory hasn't been added to the Warstory Archive yet.
Wow, I'm receiving a whole lot of praise for this! I'm really glad people like it. About the Archive, though, I don't think this is nearly good enough. Have you seen some of the stories there? It is up to a Moderator to decide (right?), but I don't know. Thanks a lot anyway!
