I got a :) face...

3. something, I didn't really care, it's not semester grades anyway.

Also, some games do make you smarter but addicted, I stopped doing my homework a lot to play video games and sports. *shrug*

I think that any GPA above 4.0 is fake, the damn thing is based on a set 0-4 scale.

Also, GPAs are historically only used in college, not high schools.
we are not quite as old as you!

My school (and district) weights classes; Regulars are out of 4.0, Honors out of 4.5, and AP/IB out of 5.0. I'm in 2 Honors classes and 5 AP/IB Classes right now, so i'm not doing amazingly this semester with a 4.22 though it may seem so. Overall, my cumulative GPA is around 3.94, since I did practically nothing in freshman year (I even blew off my science fair project and got a 69 in Biology lol).

Just to add a bit more to the discussion (especially regarding Bologo's post), I'm not sure if I'll get into the colleges I want to go to. I'd like to get into chemical engineering, and want to stay close to the Tri-state area, so my options are limited. Optimally I'd want to go to Princeton University, but... that's a bit of a stretch for anyone so I'm not getting my hopes up.

Other places I'm interested in include Lafayette and Lehigh, both of which I think I'd get into, as my grades are a good bit higher than the average person accepted. I'm also no slouch in extracurriculars so I think I have an ok chance. Lately I've been feeling anxious, like I'm not going to get in anywhere :/ I guess everyone feels like that sometimes though?

Can somebody tell us their crappy grades please? We won't flame you(I hope.......).

One year I got a 3.0 because I got two Cs right at the end of the quarter.

87 American Lit- My teach messes up my grades too much
86 H.Chem- dunno i jsut dont read tests carefully
97 Govt- by god its like 8th grade all over again
87 Health- i got a c on one thing it goes from 97-87
95 US.Hist- once again a repeat of 8th grade, geesh
101 Spanish 2-lul easier than spanish 1
83 Pre-Calc-now that it some useless hard crap one grade i dont think will reach the A range

Guess there's a school your aiming for question?

Well im only sophmore so im not completly set on anyone school right now im going for Chapman, but going to any hobo school in Colorado's a back.

As for the whole "what school" part of the conversation, I'm shooting for an Ivy. It might be out of the question at this point though. In reality I either want Mechanical Engineering or Pharmacy, or even some combination of the two. I'm looking at the DC/Metro area for schools (Johns Hopkins, University of Virginia, George Washington). My safety school is University of Rhode Island, due to it being quite close, and having good a good Pharmacy and Engineering school.

Fine, I'll share.

Out of a 4.3, I got a 4.1 in high school (pretty smart right, well keep reading).

Its freshman year of college, and as of now, I have an A, two B+'s, and a B. Pretty pitiful, GPA comes out to like 3.43 or something like that. I'm pretty sure I will have no problem bumping the B+'s to A-'s with finals and all, but the B is in writing, the most subjective piece of shit ever. And since I'm at Stern, the curve is absolutely ridiculous, meaning its really hard to maintain a 3.8+, which is kinda necessary to get a good job out of school in our crappy economy.

Basic point, high school and college are completely different.

Mmmmmm..... the sweet taste of homeschooling, with an extra sprinkle of this thread.

Just like American prosciutto.

But before then, it did look a little something like this:

Sophmore Level Math(It's how they classify it) C
English A
Focus/Geography A
Animal Science B
Spanish 1 -A
PE -A
Physical Science(Yeah, im not quite sure either.) B

Some of these are guestimations but hey, no one will take the time to rummage through my grades on this forum.

Curriculum now? Well a mighty fine one sinced it is based off my interests.

Astronomy
Cooking
Computers

Might throw some math in since ive always been pretty ok with it, and later learn a language and perhaps personal finance.

I don't see many people but I am reaping the benefits of non suicidal thoughts.

so... If I have an A+, A+, A+, A+ , A-, B, then that would be a ~3.83 gpa?

1st is PE- in middle school, it's hard not to get an A

2nd is sophmore geometry. It's easy as hell.

3rd is English, where I somehow pass even though I hate it, and my teacher despises me.

4th is social sciences, US history. It's also easy.

5th is freshmen biology. It's hardest.

6th is technology, and for thatbone the teacher has not updated the grades online.

So yeah, that's all of my classes.

If your not in college, your 5.3 bullshit GPAs don't matter... its on a fucking 4.0 scale.. I just don't get it. My high school didn't let you get higher than a 4.0!

In high school, I graduated with a 3.5...

College now, I have a 3.21 in the College of Engineering. Yeah, the only majors that feel any sort of pain similar to me are Sciences (No, Political Science and shit doesn't count). Not to start contraversy, but my easiest class in college so far was English 110, what an easy A (ironic cause I can't spell for shit). Black American studies was also easy too.. I think I got a 98% without a curve...

Argh, all of you with your good GPA's...

So far through high school (and I'm a senior now) I've had a 2.1. More because I'm lazy than because I'm dumb, as I've got really good test scores, but I just have literally no motivation to actually do homework.

Um Im not sure right now Im a sophmore in highschool.
Spanish 4-B
Soccer Tech-A (we play soccer all hour, its great)
Honors Chem-B+ (hoping to get that up to an A-)
Honors Algebra 2- B- (i will be so happy to keep this in the b range. Thats one hard class)
English- A- how i only have an A- in that class i dont know.

Any ways discussion part.

Im kind of nervous about college. To get into the school I want I need atleast a 3.7 or something around there and I only have about a 3.6. Ive been working pretty hard recently, but to no avail. My other choice of college you only need a 2.5 so ill get some serious schollership money.

No motivation? You mean your entire future isn't motivation enough? I was in a similar situation in middle school, but when I started high school I realized "ok these grades actually matter" and that was motivation enough.

Good luck getting into a good college!

Astronomy
God this sounds awesome.

Currently:
Calculus - 91 (should be much better)
English Honors - 83 (which is, horrifically, the class average)
Mandarin - 92
US History II - 96
AP Biology - 84 (need to try harder, a pretty low grade compared to all the smart asians and seniors in my class)
Journalism - 96
Phys. Ed- 97 (lol it's only weight lifting right now)

If this is addressed to me, I'll agree with you. I mean, I attend a magnet school (or something similar) and I have phenomenal test scores, so I'll have no problem getting into an 'okay' college, and I think I have a chance at a school like Amherst College. I accept that my future is enough of a motivation for me to do well, but to a certain degree I think that the difference between an Ivy League and a school like Hampshire College (my safety school) isn't going to be huge. I hesitate to write more at the risk of a really egotistical rant, but I think that I'm doing well enough to make up for my low high-school GPA.

on whom the three Fates smile
why do all of you make excuses for <A grades? who are you trying to impress?

in college, i have a 3.0 flat. something that needs to be worked on but most certainly not "trash" like some of you seem to think.

I don't think "bullshit" is the right word for people who are taking obviously harder classes and do well in them. Why should a A in a non honors class that took only 1/4 of the work of an AP class count the same GPA wise? In the end, GPA is really only good for class rank which does not vary in different schools!

As for colleges I am thinking of, Boston College and Villanova would have to be my top picks depending on how well the economy is doing. Loyola Maryland and University of Delaware are also up there on my list. Right now I am really interested by European/more specifically History of England. That could change in a year or so though.

I'm in college and the semester's not over yet, so no idea.

Doesn't really matter because this is my last year and I'm applying to graduate school, and they don't take my grades from this year. But I still want them to be good.

edit: Of course I get bullshit test scores to stress out over instead. Fucking hell.

For the person who asked about the University of Toronto, I am currently studying in my first year of engineering there and had an average of around 86% (data management, english, advanced functions, calculus/vectors, chem., and physics) in grade 12, which turns out to be on the low end in terms of acceptance averages for this program. :(

As for the campus itself you can’t really go wrong it’s in the middle of downtown Toronto. Outside of the engineering and life sciences programs at UofT I cant really give you any useful information but all I can say is that I’m really enjoying everything about the campus outside of the lecture rooms.

For scholarships I don’t really think that UofT gives out any really substantial ones unless your average is ridiculously high. For example I was offered a $10,000 scholarship (over 4 years) from the University of Ottawa and nothing from UofT for the same program.

In terms the difficulty I am finding the work manageable right now but the engineering program at UofT is known for being one of the harder undergraduate programs in all of Canada. As for the math courses I’m currently taking, Calculus I has mostly been review of high school but we are now starting to learn new stuff like integration, and Linear Algebra where barely any of the material you will learn in an Ontario public high school will prepare you. You do learn about matrices slightly in data management and at the end of vectors (in order to solve systems of equations) but you will basically be learning everything for the first time if you take linear algebra, which I assume you would have to if you want to go into mathematics.

In terms of the difference in difficulty between high school and university even though this is the internet and such and you may think this is a lie, I didnt do any homework and barely studied for tests in grade 12 and I am now finding myself working on problems sets for around 4 hours every night (5 days a week) just to understand the material being taught.

Can somebody tell us their crappy grades please? We won't flame you(I hope.......).

One year I got a 3.0 because I got two Cs right at the end of the quarter.
Geometry - F
Spanish 2 - F
P.E - F
Computer Graphics - A+
English 3-4 - F
American History - C-

I miss a lot of school, how I got a C- and an A+ is beyond me. I missed so much this year that they called my house on Friday saying if I don't start going to school they're going to have to send a police officer to escort me.

Reading this thread made me feel like shit. Hopefully I can make all this up during community college or something :/

Honors English - A-
Spanish - B+
Honors Physics - A
Honors Integrated Math (Statistics, Algebra, and pretty much everything else all in one year) - C
Principals of Engineering - A-
Digital Electronics - A
P.E./Health - A
Concert Band - A+

4.0 right on the dot for me. I only got one C and that was in my Math class thanks to my dumbass Student Teacher, who fucked over the grades of half of the people taking that class, and a B in my spanish class, which mysteriously appeared when I got A's on every assignment, as well as an 89% on the quarter final. I guess it helps when you have 5 honors classes, but even then, a 4.0 is pretty bad for that =/

Edit: My school runs on a 4.0 regular scale and 5.0 honors scale in case you are wondering.

American History: A (95%)
English III: A (93%)
Spanish IV Comp Lit: A- (90%)
Adv Math/Trig: A (93%)
Physics: A (93%)
Printmaking: B+ (88%)

Stupid Printmaking. I love the class to death, but I want my 4.0. ;_;

I think that's like a 3.86. Last year... Not so hot. <_< Seeing how bad I did last year motivated me to do better, as I believe colleges really look at junior year.

Edit: To respond to Bologo's "what college do you want to go to?" question, I'm thinking about somewhere in Arizona. Northern Arizona University looks extremely appealing. Having slopes nearby is especially a plus. Always love snowboarding in winter. =] I also like the idea of a school in California, where I live now. Perhaps UC Davis? Don't really know if my fuck-up sophomore year will let me get into there though. My parents went there, for the record. I really like the idea of NAU though. I guess I'll know in about a year's time...
