CAP 10 CAP 10 - Name Submissions

Putting this out there for some feedback.

Sparikrill [SPAR-eh-krill]

A portmanteau of 'spark' and 'krill' with an extra syllable added for good taste. I was looking for something I could hear Ash shouting before "I choose you!" or the Pokedex say before "The electric shrimp Pokemon." Was I close?
I think it sounds much better without the added 'i' to it. "Sparkrill" sounds very smooth and has a great flow to it.

I just think that the actual convolution of the name doesn't matter as much if the name still manages to be simple and catchy. I mean, I didn't even realize that the name "Mew" could be interpreted the way Deck Knight interpreted it, and I certainly don't think that it detracts from the name. I'm barely even aware of the "-ohm" in "Cyclohm" most of the time, either. It just rolls off the tongue so that I don't have to care.

But maybe all this is irrelevant to what we've been talking about.

I think simple and catchy is top priority here. Nevermind what makes the name. So long it's not Fred, Ted, or Doug, you can tell by looking at it whether or not it really fits the Pokemon.

Exactly my thoughts. It's annoying and pointless to find a letter that a shrimp ends with and electricity begins with as the same letter, therefore creating an overly punny name. Or, just combining two words together. Or, overlapping them. (Ex. Krillectric, which doesn't even fit the maximum 10 letters.)

If you are going to do that, please be creative if you want my vote. I'm just saying.

Well, I guess I'll suggest a name, not sure if people will like it, or if it's already been suggested, but, whatever. I think Zapprawn is a very catchy name, and will be my Final Submission, unless it has already been suggested.

I think the "crustacean" aspect of this does not get communicated well by the name. The most prominent part of "Crustacean" is the "Crust", and without it, "acean" alone could very well refer to something else like "cetacean", "testacean", "phocacean", etc. The ending "-acean" by definition is something that belongs to a certain "-acea". I'm not really sure how you can bring out the "crustacean" aspect of this better without completely changing up the name. Spending 5/10 chars on "-acean" is a waste, I feel. Perhaps you can rearrange the name somehow?
Hmmm, I dunno because having "crust" without "acean" sort of makes crust more important and implying that he has something to do with...well...crust, which is not what is intended.

Pulsacean still seems to work and sounds good. Maybe...Crustacemp?

So, like this:

Final Submission:
Crustacemp (Crustacean and EMP): Mixing crustacean, which is what the pokemon is, and EMP (electromagnetic pulse), referring to its part-electric typing.

I like Pulsacean better, but I guess this sort of makes more sense according to your logic.

My final submission: Krillo

Not gonna get any attention thanks to Krilowatt. Although I honestly do like the cuteness of my name better.

Some of my favs:
Ebion
Gloebi

You might. It has two L's, so they might pick yours since the don't like the one L on mine. I made sure to put Krilowatt up ASAP so no one else would take the idea. Apparently I did my part. ;) Sorry, Dr. Attack.

Final Submission

I've had a name for CAP10 ever since I saw aragornbird's shrimp. I suggest the name Prawnzap. It's (obviously) a combination of prawn (shrimp) and zap (electricity).

EDIT: Wow, I just realized assassinfred posted "zapprawn" just a short while before me. I think prawnzap is a bit easier to say, but I'm not sure how much credit you guys will give me for this idea. (even though I've had this name picked out for a while.)

I really don't want this guy to have prawn in his name or I will think of porn everytime I read it.

Maybe you shouldn't have such a dirty mind, then.

I found Voltrawn to be highly amusing, and Krillowatt is a solid option as well. I'll always pull for the home team, though.

I don't want to be a threadhog, but I'd like to express my support for three similar-sounding submissions: Jibaku's Jumbolt, heatran1919's Gumpolt, and my own Gumbolt. I'd like to think that the reason I haven't seen a lot of discussion over them is that they're buried way back in the first few pages under a lot of wierd puns. They may look a bit unorthodox, but they're actually quite easy to pronounce, and have a nice flow to them. In addition, they're some of the only name's I've seen that manage to reference both shrimp and electricity without getting overly technical.

I'd pick Gumbolt mainly because I live in the state of gumbo: Louisiana. It touches close to home. If I was required to pick a fifth, it would probably be that. It's just more opinionated than the others I picked.

The funny thing is I really wasn't going the krilowatt route. I was thinking Krill+Glow=Krillow and then I took off the w. =]

Krilowatt seems to be popular enough and I would vote for it above any of the other puns. :toast:

My final submission would be Amberite, essentially stealing for the latin translation of electricity (amber-like), along with the link to Ammonites, an extinct type of cephalopod.

I assumed you didn't base it off of Krilowatt, so no worries. I was just talking toward those arguing that Krilowatt doesn't have as much of a Krill reference with one L. So, due to their dislike to that, they might find yours better.

This thread isn't going to be open for that much longer, probably like 3 days at the absolute MAXIMUM. So I urge you to mark final submissions. For the record, your name will NOT be considered a final submission if it's not marked as such. You must have "final submission" in your post somewhere.

There is a very large number of names in this thread, more and more final submissions coming in even after I made that initial post. The criteria for allowing names into the poll is a combination of good feedback in the thread AND my liking the name, so if there's really no feedback in here, I will basically have to go with what little there is combined with choices that I primarily like over others. Another reason why it's not the best idea to just keep submitting names as a collective is the fact that there are so many of them, and so few of them are actually going into the poll. There will be under 10 names in the first poll, and possibly as few as 5. I'm letting you know this in advance so that you aren't shocked by my decision to leave out so many names when I do it. A lot of them are inevitably going to be either contrived or superfluous, so at this stage it's probably best to be practical and look at the choices we have (and there are PLENTY).

Final Submission:

Shrimpulse

portmanteau of shrimp and pulse for this electrocute pokemon

edit: additionally shrimp and impulse

(personally Krilowatt is an amazing name and by far the best)

Hey, this is actually a really nice name! Only one thing: have you considered dropping the second 'i' and using "Lithrill"? It rolls off the tongue better, I think. Also, be sure to put the words "Final Submission" in your actual post body, or your submission will not get counted!
Thanks, i thought having it in the title was enough.

Final Submission:

Lithirill:
(Lithium Battery+ Krill)

I like the extra i, without it, to me it would sound like a synthesis item you pick up in FF, like mythrill. Thank you for input.

H2Ohm really is that bad, yes. Only one other Pokemon in the game has a number in its name, and that's Porygon 2, who might be the only Pokemon it could make sense on. In addition, H2O is already an abbreviation and when spoken, H2Ohm is very harsh-sounding and grating. It's just not what it would be named if it were a Pokemon.

Crevolt is ok, it reminds me more of Crevice + Volt, and not that Crevette de Volt thing it should. It doesn't remind me of anything remotely watery, and really isn't that catchy. It doesn't flow. Not sure what else I can say. Shockateur isn't that clever, really, as the saboteur reference is largely lost. Furthermore, the use of shock is too blunt and the way it rolls off the tongue isn't as exciting as some other entries by other people.

It's difficult to rate some names, because largely it's how the word sounds when spoken aloud that determines how well it seems to "feel right" or "fit" CAP10. When submitting these things, try to say it aloud, and do so while not looking at the art. If you can truly conceive something close to the art from the name (most people can't and just pretend they can), then your name might fit.

Raimaron
Rai - from Japanese 雷 (thunder, lightning) or 瀬 (rapids)
Camaron - Spanish word for shrimp
(final submission)

I've come up with a few more name ideas. I'd really like some feedback... telling me that my ideas are utter failures are better than nothing... <.<;

Neomi
(Neon, as in electric neon lights, and its neon glow + Nami, Japanese Romaji for Ocean Wave)

Pulseidon
(Pulse, as in electric + Poseidon, fabled Greek god of the sea)

Peresea

(Amperes, a unit of electrical measurement, and... sea... which I hope you all know what that is... Also, it's pronounced "Percy," as in, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief... What? Sabrina was a pop-culture reference...)

I'm unsure as to which name to place my bets on... this CAP has really surprised me, in the sense many ideas appearing to have the most support, in the actual polls don't... My personal likings so far are Krillowatt, and Shoqua.

I think Neomi is probably your best bet here, since its cutesy-ness matches that of the art design and stuff. The other two, with their mythological godliness references, don't really fit at all, unfortunately. :\

As far as 'Neomi' goes, though, I don't think it sounds quite fitting enough for the shrimp. I like the use of the word 'neon' in there, though... maybe something else with that.

...although really, we should just be looking at preexisting names to support.
