Krilowatt is live on the CAP Server!

(Thanks to Elevator Music for the screenshot!)

The inaugural battle was fought between Beej (the CAP10 Topic Leader) and Umbreon Dan (the ATL for CAP10). Our intrepid TL came out on top by utilizing an unorthodox Guts Machamp sweep with Dynamicpunch. Some people (including Beej himself) claim that it was a hurried teambuilding accident. But, I think we all know that it was wily gamesmanship by the savvy veteran battler. Hax? Pshaw...

Anyway -- the server is hopping with activity. The CAP ladder has been reset, and all the other CAP pokemon have been removed. So for the next two weeks Krilowatt will have the limelight. At the conclusion of the testing period, the top-rated battler will win the custom title of "CAP Playtesting Champion"!

If you want reference information on Krilowatt -- check out Krilowatt's dex page on the CAP Website. It has all the info on our wonderful little electroshrimp. There is even a preliminary analysis to help newcomers get a jumpstart on playtesting. If you need help connecting to the CAP server, or downloading the CAP sprites -- the CAP Server Connection Guide should tell you all you need to know. So, head over to the server and start battling with Krilowatt!

This thread will serve as home base for all playtesting results and comments. If you post battle logs or long excerpts, please use hide tags, or code tags please.

so far, i gotta say, life orb krilowatt kicks butt. Outspeeds base 100s and still hase bulk. Magic gaurd is awesome.
Surprised im the only one using celebi, as he resists both grass and ground, has recover to keep coming in, and can beat slow krilowatt with leaf storm
first post FTW!

as you can tell from that log, i'm running a Surf / Ice Beam / Thunder / Rain Dance krill with timid and maximum special attack. it does its one job very well. trace is actually not underwhelming at all; without sandstorm, i'm not missing magic guard. i'm seeing a ton of tyranitar on the ladder though, so i think i'm going to have to drop rain dance for a bit.

i've had several speed ties already, so it appears everyone is maxing out the speed. most people also appear to using Life Orb with magic guard. i guess that's the set we predicted everyone to abuse, so let's just see how good it is. :)

gg beej. i will defeat you someday ;_;

lol I don't need 100% accurate Dpunch to beat dumbreon dan on a regular basis. (gg :D)

Anyway, I'm battling on the ladder with the team I used in the inaugural battle, and I'm using Krilowatt the way that reachzero said that one would probably be expected to: I built an offensive team without worrying too much about certain crucial weaknesses, then through in Krilowatt to patch up any remaining holes. So far it's doing surprisingly well, and I feel like I win a majority of my battles provided I don't act like an idiot. A lot of people are using Magic Guard, but I've found Trace to be very useful.

hmmm, i feel like, even though everyone running offensive krilowatt, i feel it's just because this is beggining and no one is running the things it would counter. However, i feel like once playtesting is over, it will really settle into the metagame and do exactly what it is supposed to. I think this was a complete success. Only time will tell though.
P.S. Beej has a huge agiligross weakness-so do most teams. :)

Yeah, right now everyone is just playing around and seeing what could work. Things will become much more organized in the coming weeks.

Yeah, it's a new pokemon, you really can't expect everything to be in order. All the hype is buzzing around, give it some time and you'll see a few sets become a lot more common, and some of the others dropping off.

I just did some fairly brief testing, so don't take these impressions as absolute by any means. Anyway, one thing I've found is that LO Krilowatt is a very powerful Pokemon against offensive teams and an extremely effective lategame cleaner in general. I run Surf/Thunderbolt/Ice Beam/Overheat, and it's amazing how much of standard offense that set outruns and ohkos (or 2hkos while taking little damage back). I'm not entirely certain why it performs so much better than, say, a Modest Starmie with Leftovers, but it definitely does perform better. I also briefly ran SD Infernape with Pursuit support (although after seeing literally no Latias I switched out my pursuiter) which worked very well; people are relying on Krilowatt as a kind of "catch-all" defensive pivot, which it's actually great at in general...but it fails miserably against SD Infernape in particular. Also been using a Shaymin and...well, maybe it's the relative lack of Scizor in the CAP metagame, but I just have no idea why Shaymin is as underused as it is. It's been my MVP more than once, threatening its would-be counters with Seed Flare SDEF drops, forcing switches with leech seed, and soaking up the EQs/Energy Balls directed at Kril. My team as it is has some pretty major issues (problems with blissey and latias being the most relevant ones) but besides those it's doing pretty well, relying on Krill's awesome synergy with its other members to win.

83x1.3 (from Life Orb)=107.9, so even not taking EVs into account Krilowatt has a higher base SpA. Comparing max SpA to max SpA, Krilowatt has 378.3 to Starmie's 328, about 15% higher. That combined with a relatively massive bulk, lack of Pursuit and Electric weaknesses, and the incredible ability Magic Guard make the difference pretty clear.

The speed difference is negligible for the most part.

Yeah but Krillowat has to run Timid, while Starmie can run Modest and still outspeed base 100s. Timid Krillowat's SATK with Life Orb is extremely similar to Modest Starmie's.

I've been testing around with the following set;
Krilowatt @ Life Orb
[Magic Guard]
Timid
252 Spa / 252 Spe / 4 SpDf
- Heart Swap
- Draco Meteor
- Overheat
- Thunderbolt

what peeves me is that Krilo is only base 105. It doesn't outspeed Latias, nor does it outspeed any boosted dragons. so Draco Meteor from the get go, KO them and then heart swap something else then continue sweeping.
So far, I've managed to pull this off 4 or 5 times, and it's quite hilarious. Sadly, this tends to be less-effective as the battle wears on, since they end up switching in things that Draco Meteor/Overheat don't touch and things that Heart Swap won't annoy. most notable of these is Snorlax.
Otherwise, a twist on standard offensive Krilo is always fun to try, just to mess with the foe.

Also a note to anybody using Offensive Krilo - Timid, Max Speed and Earth Power is the way to go if you want to beat other Krilos.

Magic Guard LO sweeper is bullshit and so is Heart Swap. Neither of those help us counter anything and we've succeeded in turning it into the very disaster we've been trying to avert. I've now been forced to run Krilowatt checks/counters because you can't just ignore it and send out some random bulky sweeper. The coverage and speed are just too good, not to mention you need something to flat out OHKO it or it just won't die.

Where I stand right now is that Heart Swap and Magic Guard need to go. Krilowatt is just another sweeper now and I'm not sure that's what the metagame needed.

Blissey stops Krillowatt so cold it isn't even funny. The best Krillowatt can hope for is a stalemate, and that's only if it has Rest. Seismic Toss finishes it eventually.

Btw. I've been testing the CounterCoat set I mentioned in the pre-playtesting thread.

Krillowatt @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Guard
Bold
88 HP / 252 Def / 168 SpD
Move 1: Counter
Move 2: Mirror Coat
Move 3: Rest
Move 4: Toxic

It is amazing. The only thing Metagross can do to it is Explode, and Counter is extremely useful against CB Scizor since if it U-turns into anything other than a Ghost they take massive damage. It's incredibly durable and laughs at other Krillowatt as well. I haven't faced any DDTar but I seem to be seeing a lot of Scarftar and it can take two Scarftar Earthquakes and KO back with Counter. It really screws Pokemon that can only use attacks or have a lot of low PP stallish moves.

I am a bit miffed that Recycle isn't implemented so I can't really test Recycle and Chesto Berry > Toxic and Leftovers, but so far its done as I predicted, stopping unboosted attackers cold.

Its the centerpiece of a stat-up disruption team I've put together. The ability to abuse the many unSTABbed Earthquakes and STABbed neutral special attacks is a huge bonus. It has so much PP it can easily outstall opponents. I've yet to test other options over Toxic like Overheat for SD Scizor or Thunderbolt for Gyarados, but otherwise most stat-up users are incredibly exploitable.

Not really. A max attack life orb brick break will 2hko standard Wishbliss. Krill can beat Blissey if it wants to. With a sub+brick break with life orb, blissey can't break its subs nor will status do any good due to Magic Guard.

ok, but I didn't say it was broken. I said it was one annoying motherfucker that does everything besides actually counters OUs. There are almost no tank sets on the ladder because Heart Swap/LO Magic Guard fuck up most of OU as it is. I'm starting to see a Grass type on every team, even Sceptile. Why do you think that is?

Once the two weeks are up I'm sure there are going to be all of two different mindsets regarding this:

1) Krilowatt isn't functioning the way it was intended. We need to fix this.
2) Krilowatt is great. It's winning me matches and it's totally not broken, so let's keep it the way it is.

If anything, what I'm learning from CAP10 is this: there is a good reason there aren't any OUs with Heart Swap or Magic Guard and we should keep it that way.

easily the best set so far, i played it once and was mightily impressed and have seen it in action in other matches. this thing is really good.

right now, i've been using trace krillo with perish song/discharge/rest/surf. i'm basically stuck in a stall mentality with my team (if you have seen me on ladder you know im using a ridiculous stall heavy team) and this thing is the glue that holds it together from gyara, mence, nape, etc.

i think fuzznip pointed out that without MG, you will be worn down by residual damage and i think he is right, that may backfire on me in the future, but right now, i just love this little guy.

I actually think the early stages are going quite well. Yes, LO + Magic Guard is powerful. We had that discussion a long time ago. People have compared it to Scarf Heracross but I think that's erroneous.

Over the course of just today We've had the LO Sweeper set hyped, I've been trying CounterCoat (along with kd24) with some level of success, and I've been seeing physical Krilowatts pop up to deal with the Blissey that beat the tar out of the LO Special Sweeper. 4 Attacks is really what makes that set hell. Remove one of them and you end up with something of a Starmie that hits fewer speed targets. I have found myself switching out one or two moves based on the changes I see.

Even my defensive set has been having a lot of trouble with boosted moves. Switching in is a lot more difficult on big attacks, so even defensive sets can't wall. Prediction is really key to switchins, the typing allows for a lot.

I'm quite pleased that Heart Swap works so well against CM strategies. Calm Mind is extremely powerful in general and without it CMers walk all over Krillowatt.

In any event we did add something significant to the metagame. The idea that it would not change is ridiculous. Sceptile is supposed to be the harbinger of doom? It's faster than Krillowatt, has decent physical and special attacks, and its special defense isn't too bad. I've been seeing Roserade and Shaymin too which has been pushing more Krilowatt to run +Spe to beat them. Grass is hardly an unbalanced type.

It's very early, I don't think we've seen all the potential sets. I haven't seen many Trace Krilowatt yet but considering the high presence of Magic Guard Krilowatt it may not matter. So yeah, Magic Guard is dominant now but we'll see what develops.

Incidentally I did forewarn of the Thunderbolt/Surf/Ice Beam/Overheat set >_>. Just sayin'.

Honestly, I can see a lot of potential with Krill. One of my old teams had a massive BU Revenankh problem, and hey, Krill can instantly fix that. Another team had Crocune and defensive DD Gyara issues. Krill can fix that. We made a Pokemon that does its job perfectly fine; the primary issue is that more teams could use a generic LO sweeper than they can a specific niche check, especially one which is this fast and this bulky. My Krill has survived Flygon Earthquakes, LO Draco Meteors from Latias, and all sorts of other crap with just 20 points in SDEF by way of defensive investment. Not a lot else is this fast, hits this hard, and tanks this much. I'm not saying it's broken, I'm not even saying it needs to be nerfed, just that Magic Guard combined with this thing's movepool and bulk leads to some pretty obvious results.

I actually think that Krilowatt has been a success so far. It stops what you want it to, but fails against others, which is actually its concept. I've been using BB/Waterfall/tbolt/ice beam and it has been working out really well.

I haven't been playtesting on the server, but would it be possible for a Focus Sash-Magic Guard set to be effective? It could allow for a safety net in case there were an opponent Pokemon who nabbed a set-up or two and would otherwise go in for the sweep but Krillowatt could then survive any hit and take it down. Is this plausible or is Krillowatt too bulky to necessitate a Focus Sash just to survive?

Very, VERY little is going to be OHKOing Krillo (SpecsTile w/ Leaf Storm?), so it's much easier just to give it a different item. Defensive sets are much better at countering set-uppers.

Krilowatt really doesn't fail against much of anything. It gets walled by certain Pokemon like sweepers do, but it can be pretty bold about taking on other sweepers, as it has the massive bulk to take a hit or two from them.

We may have made Krilowatt useful, no denying that, I just can't help but feel we've lost the spirit of its intended use and are just hopping onto the bandwagon of what it does now. :/
