I saw some trailers and some footage about the product but haven't followed or read any thing technical about it. Is this a 5th gen console? Are they still using DS gamecards for this?

Yes it is a completely new system. Its a jump similar to gba>ds. They are using gamecards similar to the ds's but that wont work in a ds console, though the 3ds is backwards compatible.

Ugh no kidding. I have a couple of games I want to buy for PS3 / DS but now I need a bigger budget to pay the rest of Pokemon B/W(dropped $20 for pre-order), 3DS console, plus at least one game for it. Ocarina of Time 3D, Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil and that Kid Icarus game look like good candidates.
