Volcarona

Honestly, almost any EV spread that does not include attack can work on this bugger. Plenty of people attest to 252 HP/ 252 Def and I know for a fact that 252 SpAtk/ 252 Spd works wonders. It's really up to your discretion on how you want to EV it, just like what fire move you pick. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, there is no clearly superior set.

I finally got one with a 'relatively superior' rating. It's male, 31 sp.attk ivs and 28 speed, 25 HP. Only problem is that it has only a 6 in def and 15 in sp.def. I guess I'll use this one in-game for battle subway and work towards breeding a stronger, bulkier one later.

Volcorona @ Chesto Berry
Nature: Timid
Ability: Flame Body
Evs: 252 HP, 188 Def, 52 SpA, 16 Spd
-Quiver Dance
-Fire Blast
-Bug Buzz
-Rest

If anyone can help me with optimizing the Evs, please do so. But so far, this has been the most successful version of this pokemon I have ever run. I simply attempted to treat it like a bulky dancer and this was what I got. Slapped it on a sun team and called it a day.

Although it's got base 60 defense, the defensive EVs allow it to take hits extraordinarily well, especially if Flame body acitvates. Azumarill's Aqua Jet is now a 2-3HKO, and other priority is moot after that. The Speed Evs allow me to outrun all base 130 pokemon after one quiver dance. The rest are just dumped into SpA. This pokemon turns Chansey and Blissey into setup fodder, getting up to 4 dances on them and then 2HKOing them with sun boosted fire blasts(Evs can probably be redone to ohko at this point). The set simply manhandles everything that resists it, save for terakion.

What was I losing to? Phazer heatrans. Fire blast misses. More than one pokemon with unresisted priotity on the same team. Being unable to set up because my opponent's entire team either contains rock attacks or multiple phazers.

I think I'm seeing this pokemon in a better light.
Hey, so. I tried running this in a calculator for damage against Azumarill's Aqua Jet, and it seems to do more than 2/3 of Volcarona's HP at max.

I'm looking to try and optimize this set appropriately.

I think it requires 338 Special Attack (Modest + 8 EVs) in order to KO standard 4/0 Garchomp 100% after 1 Spikes entry damage.

Anyone else have anything else notable?

@Ulevo and Alphatron - the current spread does 96.4%+ on standard Blissey at +5, but with Modest and the same Evs you'll always OHKO it at +4 with SR.

Problem is, you're never going to get that SR since Lefties will be factored in, so in order to guarantee an OHKO at +4, you need 152 SpA and Modest. Chansey you absolutely need +5 to OHKO, so if it's feasible, run 180 SpA and Modest for it.

Perhaps your Azu calc wasn't in Sun, Ulevo, and Alpha's was? That may explain the discrepancy.

Ah, yes. That would make sense. I'll see about finding a spread that ensures a 2HKO with reasonable investment.

How does that prove bulk is more important? You just said that you won't take a hit(maybe), and get a quiver dance off the switch. Where does bulk come in?
Well if you are putting less EVs into speed and relying on Quiver Dance, you are putting those same EVs into bulk.

Well if you are putting less EVs into speed and relying on Quiver Dance, you are putting those same EVs into bulk.
I see your point, but what nature would one use for that? Using a bold nature doesn't make much sense to me unless you plan on completely maxing out the defense. Otherwise, I could see using a modest nature, and taking EVs from Special Attack and put into defense. My old policy for choosing a nature was to get the largest possible nature boost while and get the smallest possible nature loss. I see and completely agree with your point, but as far as taking physical attacks, Volcarona was not designed to do that.

It's not that it's designed to take physical hits, it's just that the nature of Quiver Dance means that physical attackers are its only real threat. With bold and 252hp/252def, you minimize its counters.

I've been using the set that Alphatron posted. While his seems partially geared towards a sun team, and I have yet to decide on my own special blend, it works well.

Simply put, Volcarona is really strong on its own, and if you manage to get a +2, you're likely to win. I've swept teams in the rain with Volcarona. What is most important is ensuring that your Volcarona is bulky enough to survive long enough to get those said boosts to sweep. Once you bring it in, you don't want to be switching it out to bring it back in later; namely because of Stealth Rock, but also because the most effective set (barring Morning Sun on a Drought team with Rapid Spin support) is the ChestoRest set, simply because you can still pray on Volcarona's key resistances even after taking 50% from Stealth Rock damage and still come out on top. You don't want to put it in danger by dealing more damage to it than you absolutely must to set up safely.

Using max HP/Def, Bold, Lefties and Flame Body
-Morning sun (yay for 67% recovery)
-Quiver Dance
-Bug Buzz
-Fiery Dance.

As you can see in the 1st log vs garchomp, I can usually stall physical attackers out until they get burned by flame body. The second sweep was cut short by Gliscor's Poison. If I had not been so greedy i would've probably swept as well.

I'd have to agree to be honest. Volcarona with near max def is incredibly tough to kill if played right, and ChestoRest makes it even deadlier since it's effectively laughing at status for a time whilst boosting.

The only thing a typical max spe/spatk set has over it is immediate power - but for this you may as well use a Heatran or something - and the ability to be impossible to outspeed after fewer boosts, which is helpful against things like Sun who may want to revenge you with a Sawsbuck.

Interesting to see an optimal ChestoRest set when you finalise it!

So I worked out some Special Attack EVs using some calculations. Please note that this is not with the use of Drought---I'm sure these calculations would be much more impressive if they were. If you use Volcarona on a team utilizing Drought, I highly encourage using a bulkier build. That said, I don't.

Here are the calc's for a Volcarona with 334 Special Attack (This set actually has 336 Special Attack; out of Timid, Modest, and Bold, Modest gave me the best investment for EVs). All attacks used are assumed as Bug Buzz on neutral threats, and Fiery Dance/Bug Buzz when not resisted appropriately:

Volcarona @ Lum Berry/Chesto Berry
Modest
248 HP/150 Defense/112 Speed
- Fiery Dance
- Bug Buzz
- Rest
- Quiver Dance

@ +2 Quiver Dance:

1HKO's 4/0 Garchomp with 1 Spike
1HKO's 252/0 Gliscor with 1 Stealth Rock
1HKO's 4/0 Landorus with 1 Stealth Rock
Chance of 2HKO 252/0 Politoed with 1 Stealth Rock + 1 Spike, or 3 Spike (Note: At +2, 252 Modest Choice Specs Hydro Pump in the rain does not 1HKO Volcarona barring a Critical Hit)
Chance of 2HKO 4/0 Togekiss with 1 Stealth Rock
2HKO's 252/0 Suicune, even after Leftovers

@ +1 Quiver Dance:

1HKO's 4/0 Gengar with 1 Stealth Rock
2HKO's 252/0 Hippowdon with no hazards after Leftovers
2HKO's 252/0 Swampert with no hazards after Leftovers
High chance of 1HKO 4/0 Tornadus/Thunderus with 1 Stealth Rock
(Don't know the %, only like 4 HP difference assuming minimal damage, needs to be at +3 in the rain with Bug Buzz)
Chance at 1HKO 4/0 Infernape with 1 Stealth Rock

@ +0 Quiver Dance:

1HKO 4/0 Excadrill with 1 Stealth Rock (Normally he'd out speed Volcarona and OHKO with Rock Slide, however some do not carry Rock Slide, and they may switch on you assuming you attempt to Quiver Dance when you force a switch)

And something to note, Ferrothorn needs to have more than 252/232 with a beneficial nature in Special Defense to have a chance at surviving a Fiery Dance at +0. Why this is notable is that some Ferrothorn run Thunder Wave, and that could potentially ruin your chance at a sweep. It's rather highly unlikely, butt da moar you no.

EV's are self explanatory for the most part. 248 HP to maximize bulk while allowing it to survive two switches in to Stealth Rock, and help you use Quiver Dance. The reason 112 EVs in Speed is so it hits 264 Speed to out speed 252 Jolly Breloom. This is important, as Volcarona has Chesto Berry/Lum Berry and will be able to switch in on Spore and OHKO with Fiery Dance or Quiver Dance on the switch. If your team doesn't have problems with Breloom, feel free to lower the Speed to something more that tailors to your needs. 262 Speed would have sufficed, but it was bumped to 264 to allow it to hit 396 after Quiver Dance to out speed the base 130's. The rest of EVs were put in to Defense. Modest is to push the Special Attack above 334.

This is the set I'll be using. If I make any modifications to it, in the event it doesn't have enough bulk, I'll post back. But usually you play off of resistances, using Rest to restore health, or take advantage of Volcarona's excellent base Special Defense + Quiver Dance to get your boosts in, so I think this should suffice.

Also. If these numbers prove anything, its that Volcarona needs Stealth Rock/Spikes/Toxic Spikes support. Especially Stealth Rock.

This is probably more of a testament to the players than the pokemon, but people still seem to think specially based pokemon with super effective STABs can counter this guy. Where I'm going with this is that well, its EASY to get to +2 with this guy, and I'd say I get to +3 in about 1/3 or 4 matches. If you people haven't caught on yet that is the beauty of Volcarona is that he's one of the few setup sweepers that you can get to +2 with regularly. I'd go so far as to say if you're settling for +1 or +0 in the majority of your matches you're either not very good or playing against someone who far outranks you. Anyway the point is that these calculations don't take that into account and therefore make it seem to necessitate the use of hazards.

For what its worth, I never use hazards, and I've been in the top 5 pages of the leaderboard before, using this guy.

I don't use a drought team either. I DO however run Espy (For magic bounce obviously) with dual screens (which are insanely underhyped). So maybe thats why I get to +3 and above on a regular basis. You people should try it.

Sandstorm teams can really cause trouble for this guy. Common Stone Edges hurt Volcarona greatly, and residual damage racks up quick. Not to mention the fact that every other team in this meta is sandstorm...

Volcarona seems to be indeed easy to get up to +2. Someone once switched one into my Chandelure locked on Energy Ball. It then survived an Earthquake and KOed the perpetrator, then another fodder Pokémon before being stopped by Lucario's ExtremeSpeed. I don't want to think about what would have happened without that.

One of my favorite things about Volcarona is that it can sweep Rain teams pretty handily with Bug Buzz. I run max SpA/max Spe with HP Ice for assorted threats, and I rarely have any issues outside of Azumarill. And thanks to Lum Berry, Ferrothorn's Thunder Wave or Thundurus Prankster Thunder Wave are useless. Too much fun.

You're missing the point. Just because Volcarona is able to easily gain a +1-3, doesn't mean you can take that for granted. If your opponent switches in a threat that is able to severely damage or cripple Volcarona, it's important to make those 2HKO's turn in to 1HKO's so you can get any major threats out of the way to ensure a sweep.

Like you said, Volcarona was born to be a sun sweeper.

Set name: It's sunny! *Quivers*
Urugamosu @ Leftovers
Ability: Flame Body / Swarm
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Nature: Timid (+Spe, -Atk)
~ Quiver Dance
~ Firey Dance
~ Bug Buzz/Solarbeam
~ Solarbeam/Hurricane

Firey Dance is good for extra boosting, STAB, and is beautifully spammable. After a few quiver dances, we know what Volcarona can do to weakened teams, or whole teams for that matter. Bug Buzz is a solid STAB and goes very well with Bug buzz, but Solarbeam is an option if you opt for Hurricane. Solarbeam requires no charge in the sun and can hit bulky waters like swampert, but hurricane is nice to have in case politoed decides to switch in somewhere or if the rain is up already and ninetails is down.

The only problem i'm seeing with this is that pretty much anyone's going to have Politoed in before a potential Volcarona sweep, and if you'll need enough boosts under your belt to make Hurricane actually work, so for that vital moveslot it doesn't seem incredible. If you've Quiver Danced enough then Bug Buzz will do enough damage to any rain team, and you need something extra like HP Rock to stop Heatran sitting in the way of a sweep.

Not that it's a bad set, coping against practically all weathers, but if you're going to rely on Sun, investing in Morning Sun or something similar might not be too bad, giving you less to worry about Stealth Rock.
