new metalheads thread

first three albums are boring as shit.
Blackwater Park and Still Life are very good.
Deliverance was boring as shit.
Damnation proved that they are better as a prog band than a metal one.
Ghost Reveries was meh, and Watershed is their worst album.

not going to bother with Heritage.

Akerfeldt is a fantastic vocalist however.

Akerfeldt has some of the best Vocals in the world... clean or growled.

And Reveries was a great album...

Also popemobile... I am forever amused by how much we are the exact opposite of each other.

but i'm not a tr00 metvlhead anyway so my opinion is meaningless.
not that many people on smogon are so i have no idea what you're talking about.

okay now lets talk about better shit

Cianide are releasing a new album this year, wouldn't be surprised if no one here knew them (not trying to be all I'M SO UNDERGROUND AAAA but yeah), so yeah, the band is pretty much if Master went death/doom (Autopsy, Winter, etc):

though a lot of their later stuff has a more straight up death metal vibe to it:

they did a split with Coffins if that tells you anything

fans of Hellhammer/Celtic Frost and other primitive black/death/thrash fans need to pay attention to Slaughter (not the American one):

Acid Bath have been popping up in my listening habits a bit more lately, i wish the vocalist would stick to his harsher screams/growls though because his cleans kinda piss me off:

Devastation are also pretty cool death/thrash with a heavy early Sepultura vibe:

that should get at least some discussion started right

right

Doom Metal is boring and a chore to listen to... Second Cianide song is better but it's still boring as fuck. Listenable but nothing impressive happening from the instruments. Slaughter had potential for having something interesting then didn't deliver in that song... I'd have to hear more.

Acid Bath I could dig... drums kept up a variety, not virtuoso status obviously, but not generic boringness, and the riffs were simple but catchy enough to keep going. Not gonna go out of my way to listen to them though, but still good.

I really liked Devastation. Going to check them out soon.

New Symphony X has leaked, pretty sure I can't link anything, but it's out there if you know how to find it.

Reviews look something like: 'similar to old stuff but heavier with one ballad, When All Is Lost, apparently one of the best they've ever written'.

going to have to disagree about doom metal being a "chore to listen to", but it guess that's just taste and all of that.

well, here are a couple other Slaughter songs:

if it means anything, Chuck played with them on a couple rehearsal tapes before forming Death, and i think he wrote Evil Dead with them since there's an old rehearsal song of them playing it together. doesn't matter too much, but it's a nice little piece of history.

edit: here it is, for anyone curious: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5FapeSUV4U (song actually kicks in around 0:43ish)

Yeah, I should preface that with "Personally" I guess... I just can't ever bring myself to listen to any Doom Metal... Too slow with nothing interesting happening. I understand fully why people like it, I just can't get into it in the same way.

And yeah, Slaughter's pretty cool, which I had the feeling that the first song didn't represent them well.

New Alestorm is hilarious. A lot of tongue in cheek about the band themselves and what they write about, "Scraping the Barrel" being a song literally about how their lyrics are becoming repetitive but they don't give a flying fuck. Another lyrical beauty is "Midget Saw" which is about cutting off the legs of a midget... with a saw, and also hitting him with an oar a few times. Solid Folk Metal all around, and I would say definitely stronger than their other albums.

Good shit, check it out if you're into that sort of thing. Obviously, Popemobile is exempt.

i may or may not check out the new Alestorm, a friend of mine linked me a song and it was meh, and it was apparently the best song on there. i like putting on Captain Morgan's Revenge occasionally, it's a fun album, but i can't say i need more than one album like that in general.

There's certainly no "Wenches and Mead" on this album as far as I can tell, so there isn't really a best "song" per se. This effort just gives the best overall experience compared to their other two. But I'm reasonable, I understand that if you're not into that sort of thing, you only need to have one.

But moving on to other things. I have listened to the new Symphony X album 3 times now(Sample Song: Dehumanized), and once while doing nothing else but intently listening to every detail, and I have a few thoughts:

1) They spent some money on their recording software, the production is fantastic and all home-brewed by Michael Romeo himself (The best way to do it).

2) Russell Allen is utilizing his fullest range to date on this album, he kept the grit low tenor from Paradise Lost, but also hits some soaring high notes in a few choruses and outro vocal riffs. Fantastic display of singing.

3) The music, from what I can tell with only one focused listen, is outstanding. Each players skills being showed off quickly, then moving on to the next melody, with a lot of complex rhythms, and odd time signatures as per usual.

and

4) Michael Romeo shreds to shit as usual. Symphony X is always good for hearing something on each song that you won't be able to do unless you practice it for 6-12 months.

I've also come to the conclusion that Jason Rullo is so quietly good as a drummer. He sits there, doing his thing, allowing the other members to take the forefront, but if you listen in he's doing something pretty damn cool every single time.

pookar

Banned deucer.
dunno if anyone's heard, but theres a portnoy/allen project titled Adrenaline Mob. after listening to the teaser... it seems more hard rocky with some metal elements. but its only a sample so who knows really. mite b cool

sounds better than anything on Crack the Skye and Blood Mountain. Looks like a move away from prog, which I'm happy about. I have pretty high hopes for the album tbh.
