WITJ is great apart from the chorus. I can't fucking stand the way Het says 'whiskey in the jar-oh', it just sounds terrible.

On topic:
Stargazer Dream Theater, originally Rainbow.

That feels so natural I forget it's a cover. I was thinking about Muse for this and I was like 'nah they've never covered anything decent'. There's also House Of The Rising Sun and something else I think.

Might as well provide one of my actual favourites
Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Higher Ground
For comparison:
Stevie Wonder's Original Version
After reading the first page I was hoping to be the first to post Higher Ground, sadly you outposted me :( Higher Ground is one of my favourite Peppers' songs, and my favourite cover too. It's very different from the original, but well-executed, and you can still hear the original in it.

Some more covers I like:

Mothership Reconnection (Daft Punk Remix) - Scott Grooves: cover from Parliament Funkadelic's Mothership Connection. I love electronic music, and this version (not really a cover, but whatever) keeps just enough of the funk to keep it true to the original.

Fire - Red Hot Chili Peppers: faster and heavier than Jimi Hendrix' original, but I like it like that. Not the best cover ever, but it's energetic and all, plus I love the Peppers.

Wild Thing/Purple Haze - Popa Chubby: excellent guitarist Popa Chubby covers excellent songs.

All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix: the original is a bit dull if you ask me, and this adds the little spice it needs to be something good. Just noticed a lot of my favourite covers include Hendrix, hmm.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxl2epHHO8c
Snow (Hey Oh) - Igor Presnyakov: the original (Peppers again) is fantastic as well, but this is in my opinion the best cover of the song in existence. Presnyakov is a fantastic acoustic guitarist, and manages to play like a whole band with just his guitar. Most of his other covers are worth listening to as well, the man is all-round great and can turn even the crappiest songs into masterpieces.

A Perfect Circle - Imagine

Thrice - The Earth Isn't Humming

Johnny Cash - Hurt

Good covers are hard to make because they require mastering the original song to the point where the band can add something of their own to it. There are covers that have been made by replicating the original song exactly, and where the artist tries to sound exactly like the original artist of the song. These covers generally do not work in my opinion. Such as Bullet For My Valentine's cover of Metallica's Welcome Home (Sanitarium) sounds hideous:

Then again, adding something of your own might not work too well either. You can't cover songs from a totally different genre and imagine them working out that well, especially when the original song is considered something short of a masterpiece. It Dies Today's cover of Enjoy The Silence by Depeche Mode:

Ex-indie rock bands and mainstream rock bands covering pop songs was pretty cool a few years back but they overdid it and the result makes me shake my head slowly from disappointment. A Day To Remember did a decently catchy cover of Kelly Clarkson's Since U Been Gone but that's about it. Mostly it's just repetitive, boring and slightly annoying. Here's Biffy Clyro with Umbrella:

Umbrella

and Plain White T's:

Ella

and All Time Low:

Ella

and Vanilla Sky:

Ay ay ay

They all sound really bad and there are a thousand more of the same song covered by various bands.

Pretty much anything on Mike Tompkin's youtube channel.

This one happened to be the first thing I saw of his, but I like plenty of them.

Oh, and skip to 4:00 if you just happen to hate the song. It's the coolest part.

A Perfect Circle - The Nurse Who Love Me
actually I just wanted to point out how awesome and underrated the original band was:
Failure - The Nurse Who Loved Me

I'm sure no one needs an introduction to the original here...
Smashing Pumpkins - Landslide

Not exactly a cover, but loosely based on Grand Funk Railroad's We're an American Band. One of their last live performances before their painful hiatus (note Melissa Auf Der Maur on Bass after D'arcy disappeared)...
Smashing Pumpkins - Cash Car Star

James Brown...
Smashing Pumpkins - Soul Power

Minor Threat ... this is the first time I've listened to this in like 8 years. seriously.
Rage Against the Machine - In My Eyes

MC5... right now it's time to kick out the jams mother fucker
