Rediscovery: A 200 Metagame Tournament

Tournament Information (Please Click And Read Before Battling!):

What Is 200?

The 200 Metagame is consists purely of the parameters from the Ruby and Sapphire cartridge games. Before the other GBA games (Emerald, FireRed, LeafGreen) and the GCN games (Colosseum and XD) these versions had no access to many Pokemon and moves that the Full Advance metagames are comprised of today. As such, they had their own competitive metagame - the metagame made up of the 200 available Pokemon and their compatible moves between the two versions. This means A LOT of options are now viable and allow for a bit more diversity amongst teams. This also means some of your favorite threats from ADV OU are also toned down or nonexistent, so choose wisely!

General Rules/Guidelines
  • Single Elimination.
  • Matches are Best 2 out of 3 games.
  • Players may switch teams between games.
  • Netbattle Supremacy has a mode that facilitates 200 play (It omits moves/Pokemon not available in Ruby/Sapphire automatically) through its "Ru/Sa Only" mode. This is not available in Pokemon Online. I understand that players have issues using Netbattle, so to remedy this you may create your team in "Ru/Sa Only" mode in NBS, then import the team into PO. You will play under the server's 3rd Gen tier.
  • If you do play on NBS, use the Advanced Connect: atq.zapto.org
  • As an alternative/extra step, you can use Veekun's List to cross reference Pokemon and moves available to you.
  • ONLY Pokemon from the aforementioned list are allowed EXCEPT FOR Wynaut, Wobbuffet, Latias, Latios, Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza, Jirachi, and any form of Deoxys.
  • *** IMPORTANT *** It is recommended to those unfamiliar with the metagame to take a look at Smogon's 200 Metagame Analysis. Some Pokemon aren't included in this analysis and doesn't cover all of your options, so you'll want to use it mostly as a good reference.
  • Too check on whether or not an egg move is allowed, I recommend using Psypoke's Psydex. Search for a Pokemon, check out its Breeding Info, and if the Pokemon required to breed with is not allowed, the resulting Egg Move is consequentially not allowed.

Battle Rules
  • Evasion Clause
  • Sleep Clause
  • Freeze Clause
  • OHKO Clause
  • Self-KO Clause
  • Species Clause
  • Battle Timeout

Any participant who can not adhere to these rules are subject to disqualification/substitution.

Notable Metagame Restrictions
Via Smogon's 200 Metagame Analysis:

In addition to removing many standard Pokemon from play, the 200 metagame also places many restrictions on the movepools of the remaining Pokemon.
  • Substitute is removed from a good majority of the Pokemon that could normally learn it due to it being an Emerald tutor move. Grumpig, Azumarill and Kecleon remain part of the few usable Pokemon that still retain the move.
  • Thunder Wave is now restricted to the Electric-type Pokemon that learn it.
  • Sleep Talk is no longer allowed, so putting an opponent to sleep is now a safer option. Breloom and Milotic can take advantage of this.
  • Explosion is removed from Pokemon such as Metagross and Camerupt, although many Pokemon still learn it via level up or as an egg move.
  • Rock Slide is no longer anywhere near as widely spread. Salamence can no longer use it, and neither can Ground-type Pokemon such as Donphan.
  • Elemental punches are no longer usable on many Pokemon, as most require move tutors to learn them. Alakazam is one of the few Pokemon that still has access to these moves and can use them effectively.
  • Egg moves obtained from Pokemon banned in 200 play are disallowed. For example, Misdreavus is not obtainable in Ruby or Sapphire, but Dusclops needs to breed with Misdreavus to obtain Pain Split as an egg move. Therefore, Pain Split Dusclops is not allowed.
  • While Extremespeed Linoone is in NetBattle's 200 database, it's debatable whether it should be allowed or not, as you need Pokemon Box to acquire it.
There are few item bans in the 200 metagame. Other than Liechi Berry, no pinch berries are obtainable, as Liechi Berry is found on Mirage Island, whereas the others come from Jirachi via Bonus Discs. Aside from this, there are no other bans that affect competitive play. For example, while Thick Club is only obtainable outside of Ruby and Sapphire, Marowak is banned as well, making no real difference to a competitive 200 play team.

The restrictions set in place make 200 play quite an offensive metagame. Many of the Pokemon that would be used to stall have been removed from play (Blissey, Snorlax, Forretress etc.). On top of this, Skarmory, one of the few remaining walls, still has to contend with Magneton.
With that said, the only Box/NYPC move allowed is Extremespeed on Linoone.

*** IMPORTANT *** An oversight from what has previously been stated, but NBS's Ru/Sa mode does NOT account for all moves and item restrictions. It restricts the Pokemon roster to the Ruby/Sapphire cast and omits Move Tutor moves from later games. However, certain Egg moves are currently not restricted by default. Once again, it is recommended that you adhere to movesets in the 200 Analysis or cross-references your move and item choices with the resources above. I'll reiterate for you to remember:
  • Egg moves obtained only from Pokemon not found in Ruby/Sapphire are not allowed (Dusclops can only get Pain Split through Misdreavus, who is unobtainable in 200).
  • NBS includes all ADV items in the item list, but the only *noteworthy* item restrictions are that stat-boosting pinch berries (EXCEPT FOR LIECHI BERRY) are NOT allowed.

*** IMPORTANT *** A couple of new things to take note of from now on:
  • From this round forth and until I designate otherwise, the ONLY Box/NYPC move allowed is Extremespeed for Linoone.
  • If you catch your opponent violating team format rules during a game, that player loses that game, NOT THE WHOLE ROUND (ie. If it is game #1 and the opponent violates team format rules, you are up 1-0 in the set). Play the "Best of 3" accordingly.

Make sure you guys read all of the stuff up above carefully. Moving along:
