I know Boredoms / No Age / Shellac in here and I like the first two and never really got into the second.

I'm not sure if wavves count? everyone knows them/him, and the popular label is just lo-fi pop but there's definitely a noise element to it.

Tortoise is again, somewhat post-rocky but again elements of noise, and they're very good!

Japanther - noise punk

more drone than anything else, but stars of the lid are decent.

psychedelic ambient - LAVA|OX|SEA, they're a three-piece from He Fei (China) and are actually really cool!

sorry if i 'didn't keep on topic' but noise is a pretty umbrella term...

Vision Creation Newsun is fucking rad

I want to tell you guys about this band you've never heard of probably, they're called The Killers.

Maybe they'll be big one day

noise is a really shitty umbrella term but 'whatever' lets talk about music.
I try to be as open as possible to different kinds of music. I've been exploring a lot of electronic music (mostly dubstep) and classical stuff lately, as well as indie/alternative and a little bit of folk rock. I've been into classic rock and some metal for as long as I can remember. My favorite band of all time is probably Muse, based on overall consistently good quality studio and live work.
I really wish I was more familiar with good jazz. The only jazz album I have is Miles Davis's "Kind of Blue".

I've never heard of any of the stuff in the OP before. I can tolerate it, but I'd probably have to be high to truly appreciate it.

Wow, that's who I was forgetting. I can't believe I didn't mention Boris earlier. I mean, Boris at Last -Feedbacker- is a legendary album. If you haven't already, then definitely look that album up.

Funny you mention Boris, I was just about to. I remember 5 years ago or so when Sanders gave me the album Pink. I wasn't a big fan at the time, but when I listened to it again a few years later it hit me quite differently. Decent stuff.

I'm seconding whoever said Sleigh Bells. They're not noise per se, but they are a nice pop group that has noise "elements". That, and they are fuckin awesome.

man this stuff is really good, first one especially!!! i'm a sucker for anything with a repetitive minimalist feel to it, early italo-disco and stuff like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNfYGRT58zA especially

the problem with me making this thread is that it makes 'noise' seem like a genre when it really isn't. i don't think any of the bands i listed sound very similar to each other!!!!
If you liked them I'm not gonna be able to help but recommend

Mark Fandiulli - The Tide (Joris Voorn edit)
and
Azari & III - Hungry for the Power (Jamie Jones remix)

I definitely prefer that John Bender track to the others (having a hard time believeing it came from 1980, seems way ahead of its time). I've approached this kind of music from an electro/house/dnb/dance background as that's what I liked before I found minimal kind of stuff. I like something that has a beat, or I can bob my head to, which is why I'm not as big a fan of the rock stuff.

Also, many people into Infected Mushroom? again not really noise but kind of industrial, trance and I reckon it relates.

I`m actually laughing really hard at the rage my simple post caused. Allow me to clarify. I enjoy classic rock as a genre better than other genre`s. I prefer music made by instruments as opposed to the techno crap that is completely synthesized. I posted random bands and artists I enjoy. All of these statements were independant of each other. Seriously, this thread`s purpose as I saw it was to talk about music in general, hence the title, not to shit on types of music people like. Glen, CaptKirby, I don`t know what I did to offend you so whatever it was, I apologize.
DM, if you don`t like classic rock that`s fine, but don`t bitch it out in a thread about music, thanks.

Back on topic, yes dloosh, there were several bands I could have further added, I just skipped over the more well known ones I saw.

I also really like a number of songs from soundtracks.

You Know My Name by Chris Cornell, is the theme song from Casino Royale and is an excellent mixing of guitar riffs and lyrics.

Pokemon Theme Song, yeah yeah, I know, lol. Listening to the full version however I discovered that it is actually a pretty solid work that is enjoyable to listen to.

The Phantom of the Opera Soundtrack - Canadian Cast, a brilliant combination of songs, the lyrical performances are brilliant, Colm Wilkinson in particular (Phantom), and its quite easy to imagine the scenes based off of the music.

Again if you don`t like a type of music just ignore it, its that simple.
No one in this topic cares about the original Lean On Me or Def Leppard, and while some people might care about actually classic stuff like Led Zeppelin or The Beatles, the way in which you went about expressing yourself and also actually seriously recommending something like Motley Crue was not going to let anyone engage with what you were saying. While Glen made the mistake of hedging and saying "okay if you do not like noise but want to talk about music say stuff!" because he wanted to be friendly (always a mistake), being the first reply and shitting all over what someone else wanted to talk about was obviously inflammatory.

I cannot believe your last line was "if you don't like it, just ignore it." You came into a topic about one type of music and said "no, I don't like it; classic rock is the only good genre." I doubt you will understand the hypocrisy though.

Try backing shit up before you make baseless claims. Not once did I ever say classic rock is the only good genre, "classic rock is the way to go" is simply an expression of my personal tastes. For that matter not once did I ever disparage any other genre of music, nor say that only ony type of music is good.

Again, give me a single example of a place where I said real instruments were superior, you can't, because I didn't.

I came into a thread that appeared to want to talk about music. I didn't like the music in the op, I posted about a type of music I did like. I made no comments, implied or otherwise about the music in the op. Yeah, real hypocritical.

Finally, @ Glen and Matchbox 20, does everyone know about them? Has everyone heard their music? No. Therefore they are lesser known.

I hadn't intended to post here again but the volume of bullshit personal attacks changed my mind. I won't bother again.

Matchbox 20 is pretty far from lesser known. Just because nobody listens to them (because honestly they aren't that great) doesn't mean nobody knows them.

They get tons of radio play, even now.

They were on the Billboard top charts multiple times from the late 90s into the 00s. "Unwell" stayed on the charts for over a year - if you turned on the radio any time in 2003/2004, you probably heard them at least once a day, and most adult alternative stations probably still have the song come on once in a while.

Everyone in the world has NOT listened to Beethoven's music, therefore he is lesser known.

Thank god you won't be posting anymore.

ANYWAY I am obsessed with Chromeo, lately. Especially their song Call Me Up. They're an 80's Synth Pop band but they're so good, and definitely stupidly catchy. I do get sick of them easily, but that only lasts an evening.

I'm not sure how the Wrens are in this conversation, I'd just say they're an alt-rock band who changes it up here and there.

I have had little exposure to "noise", but I recently got Liars' Drum's Not Dead and kinda liked it. It didn't blow me away or anything, but I kept it around for future listening.

EDIT: Oh, and all you little (BAN ME PLEASE)s trolling this thread with your classic rock bullshit: either stay on topic or sit on your fucking fists. Thanks in advance.

yeah, idk how wrens got in here, but.... i guess they fit the bill more than Boston..........

Ryoji Ikeda does like, glitch noise shit that is p. chill sometimes
lots of bleeps bloops skreeps n skitzz

Lightning Bolt is classic noise, although I don't love LB I think they deserve a mention in any noise thread. abrasive as all-be!

idk if Grouper really fits in here, but its great drone! Totally great chillin or readin or cryin or uh..... yeah... just great atmospheric sounds.

Co-signing No Age, and adding Crocodiles and Japanther to the que. They are more in the noise rock category, so its a lil more consumable
and i'll be honest, i prefer that. A lot of the really abrasive stuff.... its too much for me on a typical afternoon. Japanther's Wolfenswan is fantastic, and I love C-Diles Summer of Hate too.

Sort of amusing, I heard something I guess I'd have to call Noise Hop the other day. Death Grips - Takyon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89F5fpvwPr0

man, i been outta the noise game, and into the jazz game x_X

whenever I play League of Legends / online games I usually listen to dubstep or electronica (stuck on Kill Paradise atm), but I think I just found a new genre to listen to...

I'm huge into dubstep / dnb right now. I'm a also a big fan of whatever the fuck genre the limousines are. I guess they would kind of qualify based off glen's description of "minimalist repetitive beat". But whatever, if you haven't listened to them, you probably have. Internet Killed the Video Star is a pretty "big" song I guess.

This stuff is pretty cool though, its kind of like dubstep but less retardedly bassy. (That didn't make sense at all but I know what it meant). I think I'll pick it up.

P.S. when I opened this thread I was expecting it to be complaining about some derelict tenants in an apartment above or something now I'm kinda disappointed.

I wouldnt classify chromeo as synth pop...

However they ARE ridiculously catchy and i'd highly recommend Business Casual. Got some really good hard-to-let-gos on there including the FIFA 2011-featured best, Dont Turn The Lights off.

yeah death grips definitely qualifies to this genre, i had a really hard time getting past the vocals initially... and they're still not one of my favs, but i do like 'em

edit: @ texas, an example of you saying, or at least implying that real instruments are superior

...No. (answer to your question)

Classic Rock is the way to go, I like music made primarily by instruments.
the tone speaks for itself......

hi

'noise' to me so far has a few categories within itself. the first is actual noise -- music that is abrasive or offensive to the ear. stuff like that spawned from the japanese harsh noise genre (hijokaidan, incapacitants, et cetera). but i won't recommend this because i don't enjoy it.

another category i have within 'noise' is simply alternate instrumentation (i.e. not instruments). mostly this is voice, but i also include bands that use percussion (usually with voice) as their primary instrument as a personal cop-out. here i'm mostly thinking of tonstartssbandht (intro to 'an then' and black country) or, hmm, fuck buttons (colours move). i really like fuck buttons, they're drony and hypnotic yet noisy at the same time. i like listening to them when i'm going to sleep.

and if you're mentioning boredoms i have to put in a bid for OOIOO, a side project of yoshimi (sans any pink robots) from boredoms. they're great -- very tribal, very percussion-driven, distinctly japanese (reminds me of okinawa). here is a great live vid by them, UMO. similar to OOIOO is nissenenmondai, another japanese all-girl band that is also very repetitive and percussive. here's a vid: mirror ball.

and then (to me at least) there are 'noise x' bands, with x being whatever genre. these are relatively accessible. noise rock bands like lightning bolt (stream 'colossus' here) and zach hill's myriad projects (biblical violence by hella and a vid for 'primitives talk,' made by steph davidson of risingtensions no less!) come to mind and of course they are very drum-driven (brian chippendale and zach hill being two of my favorite drummers and also not of this earth). i'm also putting in pygmy shrews, dads and boulders in there because i want to support them (here's the blog for dads/boulders where you can download some of their stuff). for noise pop, gotta have times new viking (which i recommended to you, glen, a while ago) and no age for starters. then there are bands that i wouldn't classify as 'noise' per se but definitely incorporate noise (usually guitar noise, i.e. cacophony, dischord, atonality and sounds that generally come from treating your guitar badly): sonic youth of course, and i would put grooms in there as well (definitely a sonic youth influence coming out of their first album, rejoicer), and off the top of my head, the grifters. the first two bands i think incorporate noise really well and somehow make it musical. gotta respect that.
