Mesprit

[Overview]

  • good bulk, bad typing.
  • levitate and healing wish all it has over mew
  • highly outclassed by other pokemon with same typing due to more specialized stats
  • not all bad though because it gives mesprit the ability to surprise opponent with set
[SET]
name: Trick Room
move 1: Psychic
move 2: Thunderbolt
move 3: Trick Room
move 4: Healing Wish / Ice Beam
item: Life Orb / Leftovers
nature: Quiet
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA
ivs: 0 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

  • Niche in UU. slow enough to use trick room unlike mew, and has an offensive presence unlike cress or uxie
  • useful on full trick room teams to set up trick room, or can be used as a stand alone sweeper
  • healing wish useful to get a sweeper back at full health
  • psychic for obligatory stab. psyshock useless cause you wont get through chansey anyway
  • thunderbolt gives good neutral coverage
  • ice beam can be used over healing wish if one has wish support or does not need healing wish. boltbeam good coverage
[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

  • hazard support useful to get more kos
  • chansey walls you to hell and back
  • deoxys-d, cresselia, celebi, uxie all wall you
  • heracross best teammate, and come in on most of those without issue and hit with close combat or megahorn
  • bug types like durant are useful for the many psychic types that wall you
[SET]
name: Weather Support
move 1: Rain Dance
move 2: Psychic
move 3: Thunder
move 4: Healing Wish / U-turn
item: Damp Rock
nature: Modest
evs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

  • not outclassed by uxie with healing wish and offensive presence
  • help swift swimmers
  • healing wish great move to help when main sweeper gets randomly statused
  • u-turn can be used over thunder or healing wish to help swift swimmers come in.
[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

  • HEAT ROCK AND SUN SWEEPERS. adamant fire punch zen headbutt. sunny day
  • abomasnow and hippotas are pains with perma sand and hail removing weather started.
  • bulky grass types such as celebi destroy hippotas while abomasnow is killed by victini or other fire types
  • kingdra kabutops ludicolo great teammates.
  • sawsbuck victreebel victini and lilligant
[Other Options]

  • support set. uxie outclasses
  • stealth rock
  • knock off
  • physical set with zen headbutt andel emental punches. psyshock outclasses this
  • grass knot.
  • choice set
[Checks and Counters]

  • chansey and snorlax
  • weavile and houndoom with pursuit
  • durant can set up on it.
  • deoxys-d sets up hazards on it and outspeeds it.

Mesprit can run an effective Trick Room set, separating itself from Mew and Uxe with its low speed and access to Healing Wish. Furthermore, it gets access to Knock off, which definitely deserves a mention. It has a few other options with its wide movepool, though pretty much every other set is outclassed by Uxie, Azelf or Mew.

ya when i get back home i will be adding a healing wish set, though im not 100% sold on trick room. i can try it because mesprit does have offense and lower speed than mew, making it less outclassed. ill test that.

ya its very hard to make sets for this guy. defensively, he has healing wish over uxie, stealth rock over cress, and healing wish over mew. offensively, azelf just beats him all around. i could just slash scarf next to band, because it would function realitively the same, just using a scarf instead of band

With the current set, I feel like this is a bit outclassed by Azelf. People can correct me if I'm wrong, but I always thought Mesprit's strong points over other psychic types were:

-A better offensive movepool (this thing gets Ice Beam, suck it Azelf)
-Levitate (to differentiate it from Mew)
-Low(er) Speed can be used for Trick Room

Looking at Bulk, Speed, Movepool, Mesprit is absolutely outclassed by Uxie in a support/defensive role. This pixie really has to take on a more offensive route to differentiate itself, and I don't thinking throwing CB and some Attack EVs on a support set similar to Uxie/Azlef's is really doing it.

I think we want to see an offensive Special Sweeper utilizing Mesprit's impressive Bolt-Beam coverage, and Calm Mind. Trick Room is another set Mesprit wants to give a shot.

Frankly, even with these sets Mesprit has a hard time differentiating itself from say, Mew, but that problem is pretty unavoidable.

ya thanks chou ill test from there... i didnt know exactly what to do while being completely outclassed by mew... ill edit the op after some testing. so tmr maybe

I think Chou's got it spot on here. I've tested some Mesprit sets and the ones which I found that it could do better than other Psychic types: Offensive TR, Offensive CM (Just about) and Utility counter (mainly because it can check Mamoswine). In RU, Mesprit has a myriad other options, but unfortunately, in UU, it is outclassed in almost everything it tries to do.

Anti Lead Mesprit used to be one of the best leads in late 4th Gen UU. I'm sure it isn't as good as it was, but imo still viable.

[SET]
name: Anti Lead
move 1: Psychic
move 2: Grass Knot
move 3: Stealth Rock
move 4: U-Turn
item: Leftovers / Lum Berry
nature: Quiet
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA

I still think the weather set probably still deserves an analysis. Is it outclassed? Possibly. Is it still very usable? Hell yes. Unlike Uxie and Cresselia, Mesprit has offensive presence (therefore isn't utter Taunt bait), as well as Healing Wish over Uxie. If anyone remembers my 4th gen UU rain warstory, it almost turned a certain victory for me into a near defeat. Unlike Azelf, Mesprit can take a number of hits, allowing it to come in repeatedly to set up weather. Here:

[SET]
name: Weather Support
move 1: Rain Dance / Sunny Day
move 2: Psychic / Zen Headbutt
move 3: Thunder / Fire Punch
move 4: Healing Wish / U-turn
item: Damp Rock / Heat Rock
nature: Modest / Adamant
evs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 Spe (Or 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe)

Firstly, I have no idea how this is going to work in terms of formatting. What I'm trying to get across in terms of the set is that if you're running rain, use Psychic / Thunder with SpA and Damp Rock, while if you're running sun, use Zen Headbutt / Fire Punch with Atk and Heat Rock. The set should seem quite self-explantory. Just a note, that the 4 Speed EVs actually do something for once, because it allows you to outspeed Jolly max Speed Rhyperior =D.

Yeah, a weather support with Healing Wish definitely wouldn't be outclassed. It's hilarious to let your main sweeper get hurt and statused to remove an important wall and then bring it back to full health with Mesprit. And unlike Cresselia, Mesprit has actual offensive options and a very nice movepool. I'd say a weather support set is warranted.

Sounds, good, Prem, put in the weather support set and I'll stamp this

edit: Generally, we will say "no" to most weather supporter sets (everything and it's mother gets rain dance/sunny day), but Mesprit's got some very special qualities to it that make the above set exceptional, and it's obviously a well constructed strategy.

talked to chou and figured out how to add the set which has now been added. jubilee antilead sets dont work without a lead.

a choice set is what i tried at first, but it really seems way too outclassed by azelf to warrant a set

A scarf set with Healing Wish sets it apart? Maybe oeven offensive Scarf set with Healing Wish over Trick as last resort.

I think it deserves an OO mention at least

The offensive CM sweeper set is a 90% outclassed by Mew. Mesprit trades bulk, speed for slightly more power and levitate. To me, thats enough to differentiate it from Mew, so I think the set should either get scrapped or completely reworked to avoid getting outclassed by Mew.

ok removed the calm mind set after testing both cm mesprit and mew. despite the fact that no one uses cm mew, it was obviously better... so done

Enough or not enough to differentiate? Your meaning is a bit ambiguous there.

Anyway, Levitate is quite a big player, especially on a bulky-ish attacking set since you don't want to get taken down by Toxic Spikes. This should be emphasised. That aside, I don't think sets should be omitted if they are largely outclassed by a different Pokemon. This cropped up many times in 4th gen UU. I think the question is more about "Is this set viable in the metagame?". If Calm Mind Mesprit is very good in its own regard and is a genuine threat in the metagame, even if it is totally outclassed by Mew, it still deserves to be written up in my opinion.
