Countdown to XY: A Nostalgia Thread

Day 21: What are your plans for release day (October 12)?
As far as I know, we don't get midnight releaases here for this, so I'll pick mine up as soon as it opens, head home and shut my phone and get playing.

Day 22: Who is the coolest NPC in the Pokémon games?
Lorelei Pryce Glacia Candice Brycen

I don't really have a serious reply to this, because I rarely think of the NPCs as cool. They are more or less fodder to steamroll.

Lance. He's not my avatar on PS for nothing. Awesome hairdo, kick-a cape, and the best theme music in any Pokemon game ever. (Eat your heart out Miror B.)

Day 21: Riley. You don't hang with him very long but he has a slick outfit and we share a love with Lucario. I named the first Riolu I got from the egg he gave me after him. He's just an overall cool trainer that I'd like to be like!

Day 19: What is the most unfortunate thing that has happened to you while playing Pokemon?
Luckily, I haven't really had any unfortunate things happen to me while playing Pokemon. I guess the dumbest thing I did was teach my Bulbasaur Cut in my first run-through of Red, but luckily it didn't impact things that much. I still had room to run razor leaf/leech seed/sleep powder, so it was still a beast in-game. Oh and I used to be the sort of dumbass who had things on her team like an Ampharos with a moveset of ThunderBolt/Thunder/ThunderWave/ThunderPunch LOLOL. But didn't we all go through that stage as young peeps?

Day 20: How much did you spoil yourself before launch in previous generations?
As much as possible. This gen is no exception. Honestly, I like to know what the game is going to be like before I go out and get it. I have never really thought of spoilers as "ruining the game"; rather, they actually make me enjoy it more! I mean, I am SUPER hyped about a lot of the new mons, features, and locations of X and Y, and getting to actually experience these things in-game actually feels like I've accomplished something. For example, back in 5th gen, I was incredibly excited when I finally got to evolve my Lampent into a Chandelure. Knowing that Lampent evolved into Chandelure did not detract in any way from my experience; rather, it gave me a concrete goal to achieve, and I was ecstatic when I finally achieved it! So yeah, spoilers are awesome.
The only gen where I wasn't that spoiled was 2nd gen. 1st gen I already knew all the gym leaders and mons from the Anime, so I consider myself spoiled for RBY, but 2nd gen I only knew about Togepi, Bellossom, and HootHoot (and maybe a couple of others) going in. Granted, I DID enjoy 2nd gen more than any other gen, so maybe this is telling. I dunno. It's not like I didn't enjoy all the other gens, though!

Day 21: What are your plans for release day (October 12)?
I am going to go to my local Gamestop, pick up my pre-ordered X version, and then lock myself in my room with my 3DS, my newly-acquired game, LOTS of soda, some Doritos, and a pint of chocolate ice cream and play Pokemon for as long as I can get away with. I will probably stay up until 5am playing mons.

Day 22: Who is the coolest NPC in the Pokémon games?
I'm gonna be all cliche and say Blue/Gary is the coolest. He is the best rival of all time in that he is a total jerk to you but can also be somewhat helpful when it counts. He is also really smart and strong-- he's the only rival to beat all the Gym Leaders before you and then become Champion! Granted, he loses to you... but at least he got there and put up an amazing fight! And he becomes a Gym Leader himself 2nd gen, which I thought was a really cool touch. I always enjoyed fighting him more than any other NPC, so he wins hands-down.

Runner-up goes to Erika. I always wanted to be her when I was little, because she seemed really awesome. She had an awesome team of Pokemon (at least in terms of using some of my favorites like Gloom/Vileplume/Bellossom depending on what game you're playing), while holding the prestigious title of Gym Leader. Her gym was located in my favorite city at the time, Celadon City. And she was all about achieving great things while also embracing her femininity (just look at how gorgeous her gym looks!). Yup, one of my biggest role models in the 4th grade was... Erika. DON'T JUDGE ME.

Day 22:
N. First person to address unfortunate implications of the Pokemon World. Then the dude had the audacity to interrupt the Elite 4 challenge, and he has at least three rocking themes (Battle Music, Mission Bridge, N's Castle). Then he shows up to give you the most impressive Legend versus Legend fight in the series. Honorable mention goes to Miror B, because Miror B.
This. Just this. I've also got soft spots for Blaine and Wattson. Wattson just seems like a fun old man (I probably like him so much because of his awful jokes in Pokemon Special), and as for Blaine... Well, someone else said it best:

As for the coolest character, I'm thinking of an old man that loves two main things in life: riddles and blasting opponents with powerful Fire attacks. He's the guy that taught us that Tombstoner isn't a move, the guy that carries a question-mark cane, the guy that saw his hometown get destroyed and simply packed up and moved his gym to a cave. In the anime, he has a weird design and hid his gym in a volcanic crater, with his strongest Pokemon living in the magma. In Adventures, he's a scientist, started off as a bad guy but quickly redeemed himself and has strong connections to some interesting legendary Pokemon. Giovanni aside, I'm not sure any other gym leader has the kind of character depth that this guy has, and every additional detail just makes him cooler. Have you figured out who it is yet? If not, you'll have to battle one of the burglars he employs before you can proceed.

"Hah! You better have Burn Heal!"

I don't really have a plan for the release date. Seriously, I haven't even decided which version I want yet. I'm leaning toward X right now, but that hasn't always been the case.

I have always liked Cynthia. She cool, confident, smart, and kicks ass. She traveled Sinnoh and found all the strongest and rarest Pokemon that lived there, and became champion. Now she apparently travels the world, living in fancy houses and catching the rarest Pokemon in the regions she visits.

Day 21: What are your plans for release day (October 12)?
Man, it's already been three weeks!
Well... Depending which version I get and when... I'll be pretty much outside the door of my GAME store waiting to pick it up and the Kalos region guide... And then coming home and spoiling it for all you americans :3

Day 22: Who is the coolest NPC in the Pokémon games?
(Can be a gym leader, Elite Four member, escort partner, regular trainer, etc.)
Coolest NPC? If anyone doesn't say Red they have their hat on backwards. If Red doesn't count then probably Koga for me. I mean he is a proper Ninja, and his skills gave him enough differentiation to be invited into the Elite 4! It seems strange that in Pokemon World, you do not get "directly" promoted a long the chain, you must prove yourself to be just as good as the Elite 4 at any point and then they accept you or not.

Day 19: What is the most unfortunate thing that has happened to you while playing Pokemon?
This is very painful to think about.. It happened in Emerald, Battle Frontier :( I was at a pretty high win-steak and then this super horrible thing happened.. Opponents Focus band activated 5 times in a row :'( I lost..

Day 20: How much did you spoil yourself before launch in previous generations?
Gen 4: All the pokémon and some japanese videos, but definetely not everything.
Gen 5: All pokémon, most moves and I also played the japanese ROM. Didn't understand the story completely, but locked it up. Played a patched version before the release date. So yeah, pretty horrible -__-

Day 21: What are your plans for release day (October 12)?

I've pre-ordered it on a Swedish store called Webbhallen so my plans are to be there probably 10 mins before they open (don't think it will be a queue or something.). Pick up my game, and not sure if I will be able to resist playing it on the bus home or not, haha xD Then I obviously going to play till my eyes hurt. Rest, and then play even more. Repeat for the whole weekend ;) I am not a big gammer, in fact it can easily go a month or two when I don't play anything at all, but during pokémon releases I'm pretty no-life :P

Day 22: Who is the coolest NPC in the Pokémon games?
The pervert outside Celadon City gym :)

B2/W2 had the best NPC's. There's a dude running around in Desert Resort, filling his backpack with sand, trying to stop Relic Castle from getting buried.

In Route 19, where you start the game, there's a guy who teaches you about jumping over ledges (typical intro NPC). There's also another guy in Route 2, who taught ledge jumping back in B/W. He says "Know what? You know the guy at the ledge on Route 19? He's my rival!" -- ledge jump rivals!

Also the old man and his Abra at the pokemon league from HG/SS. You talk to him and he's like "Some trainers suddenly feel discouraged and leave. My Abra can take you home. But... Trainers just Fly home lately... I feel left out. I am sure my Abra feels the same way." -- Poor dude D:

Most of the good ones have been mentioned already. But everybody seems to have forgotten Mr. Briney? With his darling Wingull Peeko at his side, he happily gives you free transport between Petalburg, Oldale and Slateport. How nice of him! He starts the game sitting lonely in his cottage, Peeko his only company. Then Peeko is taken away from him, crushing the poor old man. But luckily, the protagonist saves Peeko, and Mr. Briney shows his gratitude by taking you out to sea. The fresh air seems to do him good, so he gets more out-going after being your personal driver for a while. He later becomes the captain of a big ship. And Peeko remains at his side.

Forget Hugh, his sister and the Purrloin. The relationship between Mr. Briney and Peeko is easily the most touching human-Pokémon relationship in the history of the games. And probably the subject of some... disturbing... shipping.

Day 21: What are your plans for release day (October 12)? Head to the local GameStop, grab Y, then play Pokemon till I don't want to anymore.

Day 22
: Who is the coolest NPC in the Pokemon games? Cynthia and Lance. They both like Dragon types, both have cool outfits. And Red...b/c he's Red.

Day 22: I think Drake from RSE is the coolest. He's a sea captain who's life-long experience and knowledge is spoken not with words but from the tatters on his trench coat. He's always been a mysterious one that we knew very little of, which at the time, was personified by his dragon pokemon.

Day 21: My favorite NPC has to be Drayden. He wrestles with his pokes to toughen them up for christs sake! And when Opelucid gets frozen over, and he has his Haxorus try to destroy the ice pillars. He's just that cool.

Day 1: What is your first memory of Pokemon?
Ah yes, this was a good 'un. Fresh off of Chinese New Year, I had cash to splash via the lycees from my Chinese relatives. Being a young child, around 6 or 7, my impatience got the better of me and I opted to buy a Pokemon TCG Booster Pack, one from the ex era as I recall. Delta Species~ Strangely, the only card I remember receiving from that pack was Staryu. Nevertheless, the cards piqued my interest, so what did I do? Buy 30 more. Thus began my spree of pokemon cards, where I bought and bought and bought, right up until Year 6 where I decided that the cards were getting wayyy too expensive. I bought from France as well. And in France, I also bought a Pokemon game, giving it a try. That game was called Pokemon: Version Perle. And I played it and it was GLORIOUS, despite me not understanding half the words due to it being in French. Aaaand that's how my love of Pokemon began :P

Day 2: What was your first experience with a shiny Pokémon?
Hehe, I got really lucky with my first (and only). Discounting Red Gyarados, I was playing Pokemon Black when I came across a Shiny Drilbur. Adamant. With Sand Rush. This was when I actually knew a bit about competitive Pokemon so I knew that it was great and I should keep it. Haven't seen any other shiny though :/

Day 3: How close have you come to "catching 'em all"?
Pfft, nowhere near. I've completed every Regional dex but nah I haven't caught them all, nor do I intend to as that would put me under intense agony over the gruelling process as well as the fact that I have to catch an Emolga x_x. I can't punish myself THAT much.

Day 4: What was your first level 100 Pokémon?
Heatran, Version Perle, and I considered it a huge achievement. That feeling of getting your Pokemon to Level 100 without Action Replay is absolutely wonderful. Palkia followed swiftly afterwards, and then Infernape. Elite Four da best.

Day 5: What is your favorite Pokémon and why?
Ohoho where to begin. I can't name a singular favourite Pokemon since I have a few I like equally. And sadly, my justification for liking each one isn't solid as such, and it just goes by personal preference. As a lot of people know, I adore Ludicolo. That goofy grin, kick-ass colour scheme and overal what-the-fuckery of the design just makes it perfect. Shuckle is also a great Pokemon and one I have grown to love over time, it has that perfect mix of cute, derpy, and badassery. Probopass is also one of my favourites for the same reason as Ludicolo -- you have no idea what Gamefreak was thinking. Whimsicott is so aesthetically pleasing, although my love for it only blossomed after sweeping one of my friends' Ubers team with Whimsicott and only Whimsicott. Grumpig and Granbull also deserve mentions; I've always been a hipster when it comes to Pokemon designs, and these are often noted as the most "forgettable" designs, but hey, I love them. I think Granbull is one of my favourites due to a Pokemon card of it I have. Out of the XY mons, Helioptile (see: my avatar) is my favourite and Gooby comes a close second.

Day 6: Which Pokémon rumors did you believe when you were younger?
The obvious one is the most prominent for me, which is hold down <enter random buttons here> to increase catch rate of the Pokemon. For me, it was the up button and vigorously mashing A. I still do it haha. Also I heard rumours about Chimecho being a legendary. Soooo I encounter a Chimeco, have a master ball at hand, and decide to catch it. Disappointment was inevitable.

Day 7: Which aspect of XY are you looking forward to the most?
Mega Evolutions and fairy type!!!!111 Nah, I'm mainly looking forward to the kick-ass 3D graphics and world overview, with the fancy areas to explore. It's been the same for every new game, and I'm not gonna stop looking forward to that the most. Even if XY has already thrown a lot in my face; I'm lukewarm about the new Fairy typing while being displeased by the news of the MegaEvolutions. Taking photos and character customisation is cool, but not tooooo noteworthy. Roller skates and riding Pokemon is decent too :)

Day 8: What are your Pokémon "quirks"?
Nothing except the previously mentioned catch rate technique. Actually, I arrange my PC boxes so that each pokemon of each type goes in each box. All the grass type pokemon go in the fiirst box, the fire type in the second, etc. Oh I also scream BLUB BLUB NOT A MAGIKARP every time I fish.

Day 9: What is your favorite region and why?
Hoenn. I've never played it, but it has most of my favourite Pokemon. If not Hoenn, then Unova. Sorry for the lack of a detailed answer x_x

Day 10: If you could change one thing about the Pokémon games, what would it be?
Uh, many things. More than one save file is a biggie. A nerf to rain and a buff to hail would also be on the list. A dark type gym badge? Actually a gym for every type would be swell. Uh, getting rid of Stealth Roc. And Jynx. elcheeso

Day 11: What is your favorite mini-game?
Never played them. Pbbbbbbbbbft

Day 12: Which song/theme is the most nostalgic?
I wanna be the very best - Miley Cyrus

Day 13: How do Colosseum/XD compare to other main-series games?
Never played them. Pokemon Battle Revolution counts right? I gave that game up since it was slow as fuck. Other non-series Pokemon games I've plated is oh gosh just remembered POKEMON CRATER OH MY GOD MAN. That was the best i mean i just get sad thinking about how it stopped. Man, that game was the craze back in primary school. I remember getting a Blaziken, and Wailord and being so happy about it and thinking that I was the best, and then somebody in my class logged in to my account since my brother told them my password and stole both of the mons and I got really upset but she denied everything despite her suddenly having Blaziken and Wailord jesus christ I need to calm down but seriously yeah pokemon crater was the best.

Day 14: If you were given a pill that erases all memory of Pokémon, would you take it?
Yes. Despite me loving Pokemon, it consumes a lot of my life and my social life as I'm stuck to Smogon AND the new XY coming out, which is a bit of a bummer. Plus Pokemon is kinda frowned upon and while I don't want to give in to peer pressure I think I may be better off giving into peer pressure.

Day 15: Which past feature do you want to return in XY?
Dreamworld abilities. But here's the catch. The DW abilities are DIFFERENT to the current ones. That would make the meta much more diverse and would give a completely different playstyle to the OU meta which we can all agree that for the most part was shit. Also I want items and moves featured in XY FOUND A LOOPHOLE Stellar

Day 16: Did you enjoy the experience of starting fresh in BW?
Yes.

Day 17: What is your favorite Pokémon movie/anime episode?
Hehe, back in the day I was a wee rascal. My school was having a junk sale and the first Pokemon movie was being sold (on VHS of course, no petty new fangled DVDs or "Net Flicks". And.. and I SHOPLIFTED omygod. That guilt is still on my mind. So ANYWAY I watched it and I loved it end of.

Day 18: If you could erase one Pokémon from existence, which one would you choose?
Jynx elcheeso

Day 19: What is the most unfortunate thing that has happened to you while playing Pokemon?
I'm a p lucky guy.

Day 20: How much did you spoil yourself before launch in previous generations?
Not at all.

Day 21: What are your plans for release day (October 12)?
I will buy the game.

Day 22: Who is the coolest NPC in the Pokémon games?
your mom hehe

These last few questions are dumb huh

Let's do this:

I first saw something Pokémon related back in '96, when a Nintendo magazine made an article about upcoming Japanede games. Pokémon got 2 lines and a picture (of Red) in said article.

I was EV training in the Cave of Origin in Ruby, when a Shiny Zubat popped up. I immediately caught it in a Luxury Ball, didn't care that it had a -Speed nature, evolved it as fast as possible because I hate green, made it win 3 of the 5 possible contest categories, traded it to XD to get more Ribbons, traded it to Emerald to clone it, and is currently waiting for Pokémon Bank to become available.

It was the first of many over the years. Ironically, after catching it, I continued EV training on the same spot and on that very same day, I caught another Shiny Zubat with another -Speed nature! That one… is rotting in the PC for now.

Not counting Event Legendaries, I completed the National Dex in Platinum (thanks to Ruby, Emerald, Colosseum, XD, and the GTS). I completed the Hoenn Dex in Emerald, as well.

MATTLE's Ho-Oh.

Typhlosion. Cyndaquil was my very first Pokémon ever (in Gold), we went through so much together, and while he's gone, his memory lives in a Shiny that I RNG'd from Prof. Birch that I've cloned to death.

While I didn't believe any rumours, the "official" Nintendo magazine said that Murkrow was the evolved form of Farfetch'd. Months later, they acted like it never happened…

Honestly, everything in general.

Oh boy:
I always organize my PC in Regional Dex order, then the remainder in National Dex order.
Before Gen.5, I manually organized all items on the Bag by use/category.
I always buy one too many recovery items.
When buying Pokéballs, I always buy them in sets of 10 to get one Premier Ball, even if I never end up using them.
I always pick the Fire Type Starter, and, unless dealing with special circumstances, never put it in the PC.
I avoid Water Type Pokémon as much as humanly possible.
Besides my Starter, I don't tend to stick to a set team and I rotate my party with all Pokémon that I happen to like.

While not exclusive to Pokémon, I always save my games 2 times in a row.

Sinnoh in Platinum. While Super Contests were, in my opinion, a gigantic letdown, everything else was spot-on, despite the lack of Fire Type Pokémon in general.

Stall. I'd make it disappear forever.

Battle Bingo.

Shadow Lugia's Theme (I don't know if it has an official name).

The lack of Gyms and Pokémon League, while sticking with strict linearity, give them a significant difference while still being legitimate Pokémon games.

No. While I'd gladly erase like half of my life, Pokémon is not one thing that I want out of it.

The Vs. Seeker, the Mach Bike, the Trick House, and the Pokétch's Step Counter.

I enjoyed starting with only new Pokémon and it was a great experience. What I didn't enjoy was to have to leave all my Items behind. This one still stings…

シンオウリーグ準決勝!ダークライ登場!! Watching Ash getting steamrolled was both delicious and satisfying.

Only one? Hmm… Chansey.

I captured a Shiny Unown P, but with an emulator during a test run. To this day, I'm still searching for a Shiny Unown P.

Everything, because of the delayed English launch. Which is why this time, I'm avoiding all spoilers like the plague.

Assuming that my preorder gets a midnight release, keep playing until I get a migraine. If not, start playing until I get a migraine. (In all seriousness, the 3DS battery is going to die way before that happens…)

Ghetsis. How can you not love the guy? The only thing wrong with his was not being voiced by Norio Wakamoto.

Day 22:

Favorite gym leader: The plot twist of Giovanni being the final gym leader in Kanto was mind blowing as a kid. He's tough for a novice, his gym was fun, and he mysteriously disappears. He's so cool, when Mewtwo blows up his lab and goes on a rampage... he just decides to go on vacation.

Escort: Riley, because he's Riley (and not that bad looking).

Random person: the guy who tries to sell you that Magikarp. It wasn't that bad a deal.

Overall: Natural Harmonia Gropius, otherwise known as N (queue screaming fan girls). Awesome personality, highly attractive, awesome theme music, awesome quotes, highly attractive, sad back story, mysterious, highly attractive, highly attractive, highly attractive...

Day 23: Which Pokémon was the biggest disappointment when you used it in-game?
Gulpin in Emerald; I replaced it as soon as I could find anything better, and I didn't even evolve it until I had to...
Other than that, though, I don't think I've had too many disappointments...

Quite possibly my Gardevoir, it had synchronise on careful nature- all the pokemon i caught were careful (that 50%) because of her. ANd i wasted so much time trying to find her in Emerald. THen it was swellow who failed to Revenge Norman's slaking after aron valiantly rolled-out to his death in an epic sacrifice to bring it to ko range, and in a separate incident failed to ko linoone after it had drummed

When Platinum came out (I somehow missed DP), I was excited about using Leafeon. I already used Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Espeon in game, and they were awesome. Umbreon and Flareon wasn't as easy, but I've managed to make them work as well. I expected Leafeon to do well. I was rather disappointed by his lack of movepool. I was stuck using Razor Leaf as his main STAB for the whole main game. His other moves just sucked, and had I known his movepool would be THIS bad, I would have saved Return for him instead of my Bibarel. He was decent offensively and took enemies down when needed, but I wished he could be better.

Day 23: Gonna have to second Leafeon...it's very frail, has a bad move pool, i mean it was able to kill somethings..but didn't really impress me.
