Avalanche hits 120 BP if the opponent attacks you. I wouldn't say that's worse than 75 BP Ice Punch.

Well, it attacks last, and depends on what your opponent does, so I wouldn't call it a "good" move. Punch you can definitely make a case for it over Ice Punch, which is probably has the weakest BP of any viable coverage move.
