Applying to college

Rejected MIT
Rejected UChicago
Apparently forgot to send test scores to Michigan??? oh well

Got in UVA a while ago, still a few reach schools left I guess (feeling kinda hopeful for Dartmouth because their applications went down 18% after they stopped giving AP credit but we'll see...)

Rejected UChicago, Georgia Tech's tomorrow.

That being said, I love how almost every competitive college releases their decisions late friday so angry applicants can't yell at a live person until the following monday.

WOO I'M GOING TO AN OUT-OF-STATE SCHOOL THAT 38K A YEAR! I'M SOOOOOOOOOOOO EXCITED!

Seriously though, I applied for the honors program at my in-state crappy back up school that anyone can get into and I was denied. Meanwhile, I apply for honors at an out of state school that's harder to get into and I get into their program with a scholarship.

I AM SO READY TO GET MY WALLET DRAINED.

I remember the process of applying to college's last year (C/O 2013'er here), it was definitely an exciting time! While I didn't get accepted into the schools I wanted to (other than 1 which I currently attend), I decided not to let it get to me, and I urge you guys to do the same if you were rejected from your dream school! Use the rejection, if anything, as motivation to do well in college so that you can go to a great grad school (if that's your plan)!

Best of luck to those applying to college's right now :)

Yea, I was gonna go to SMU, but it turned out to be even more crazy expensive than I anticipated. Instead, I'm falling back on Generic Texas Honor Student's Backup Option, sometimes colloquially known as UT.

I'm either going to go to UVA or stay in HK (got offers from HKU and CUHK).

I think I prefer UVA at the moment, though the difference in price is huge..and my parents may convince me to stay in HK.

accepted and committed to american u in DC. it was my top school after my reaches and they're giving me a nice scholarship, so im pretty happy. would be cool if other smogoners went there so we could meet up or something?

How much do you think you'd enjoy America, do you like american culture? Do you think you will socialise with Americans or other Chinese people? If you don't think you'll socialise much with Americans or enjoy american culture as much as Hong Kong, I'd stick with Hong Kong. I'm on exchange at UCLA at the moment, whilst I am enjoying my time here I still prefer Australia. Weigh up if you really want to spend 4 years in the US because I thought University of Hong Kong is just as prestigious as Virginia.

That being said if you really want to experience something new and are up for the adjustment then go for it. I just find that many international students just stick with themselves and don't really adjust.

Freshman of Highschool here.

Not sure where to ask this, but being a 99 percentile student now, and most likely continuing through Highschool (I am taking Calc BC senior year, and at least 10 AP Classes total) I am wondering if I need College, and how bad I need it. My school has a great Applied Tech department, so I will be able to build a portfolio in 3DS Max, Autodesk and other such programs all the way through Senior Year. I plan on either going into Engineering (I know I need some sort of degree here), Animation (what I want to get into the most, not sure if I need a degree for some jobs), and Biology (Paleontology and Evolutionary Biology really interest me, and I assume I will need some sort of degree).

I just want to know what other people did in a similar situation, or what I should do going on. I really don't want a massive student loan and I don't want to live at home. Sorry if that sounds angsty or rambly or whatever.

Please PM or reply in the thread if you can help in any way. Thanks!

(Sorry if I should post this somewhere else)

Trust me, stick with the cheaper option if there's anything in question. :(

My parents aren't discouraging me to go to UVA, since on one hand they agree that the experience will be beneficial, but then again total costs at UVA are going to be 40-50K US per year and HKU will be around 40000 HK, which is around 1/8th of the cost.

The_Chaser I agree; I don't think UVA is any more prestigious than HKU, but my main reason of wanting to go to the US is because I've never lived outside of HK, and experiencing something new and different is definitely something I'm looking forward to.

I'm still deciding where I'll be headed atm and will probably make a decision within the next two weeks. Making this decision is a lot more difficult than I thought it would be...

Thanks for the advice though :)

My school is based on the US curriculum (AP, SATs, etc.) and the majority of graduates apply to the US, with a couple of them applying to UK/Canada/Australia.

I applied to many other US schools, its just that out of the ones I've gotten accepted into, UVA is the only one I'm considering.

I don't know how well your standardized test taking ability matches up with your courseload, but if you can do well on your standardized exams you should be able to earn yourself a free ride to some decent schools. When I was searching for colleges earlier this year, I got an offer from the University of Alabama for 4 free years + priority choices for housing and class courses because I had an ACT score higher than 32. By the time you're a senior, I'd wager that 4 straight years of taking all of the smartest kids that normally couldn't go to college will have boosted their standing academically, but even as is its not like its a horrible school.

Also I'm going to be taking computer science at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign in the fall.

If you do come to a US school SA, please don't fall into the rut of only hanging out with other Asians when you get here. It's such a common thing to do, which I get because you share cultural and social things with each other; but, especially here in Madison, it's to the point to where you won't see any Asians being friends with non-Asians. It's a complete divide (and Whites and the other colors are also part of the issue, it's not a one-way thing lol) Just keep that in mind if you do come over and begin making friends, you'll be able to really get into American culture if you separate a bit out of the Asian crowd.

I'm a paradox. 2340 SAT, top 5% of class, could probably go wherever I want... and yet I'm looking to major in journalism and as such am applying to such paragons of academic achievement as... the University of Missouri.
As well as SMU and UT Austin, which are pretty good I guess, but all my friends are pestering me to apply to ivy league and I'm sad.
this post makes me fucking gag. the tone of the second line alone is enough to rob my entire body of oxygen but honestly just fuck this attitude cabron. its always the niggas who are pure books and aint even top cut of that spewin this shit. u get an earful of it on the regular like "wasn't really feelin the college process, yea i just kind of ended up here lulz, didnt even tour tbh, u know mix zard-y-- haha that was me, idgaf only undergrad but i always felt like i was destined for ivy, i wonder if im throwin a wrench in the fuckin order of the universe here." and i mean what kind of blunt ass tool pools his skools around majoring in journalism lmfao. Got quite a bit off of my shoulders. The only reason I am able to call myself a 99 percentile student is because of these tests, so I should be okay. Again, thank you.

sorry for party rocking?

(for the record decided to go with UT)

ITT: ego boosting

No need to post what percentile you're in or anything else obnoxious.

Anyway I'm actually done my first year of uni so if anyone has any questions feel free to ask! It was easily the most enjoyable year of my life. It's easy to make some amazing and genuine friends if you put yourself out there (people are a lot less shallow etc compared to hs).

Also do what you want to study/major in. I didn't really follow that advice and kinda regret it, so learn from my mistake!

Im currently a Junior in Connecticut looking to apply to UVA by Senior year. Any advice? I heard it is brutally difficult for out of state kids. I'll be doing some BME at Yale over the summer but other than that I havent done much volunteering or such, so Im wondering whether I still have a good chance of getting in, and whether I should start considering other colleges.
