I think RSE ubers is a pretty fun tier, but it gets no attention. I still like modern ubers, but the influx of strange threats like xerneas, genesect, and arceus in later generations distorts the tier and takes away from its older values of building an excellent team and having long and strategic battles. I haven't had that many matches myself, but I'd really like to have more. If this thread gets some activity I'll see if the mods will let me organize stuff for RSE ubers like a mini tourney. What you should post is stuff about cores, mons that you think are good, good sets etc.

I'll be on the old gens room a lot and willing to play.

Welcome to the general generation 3 discussion thread! Generation 3 brought forth a LOT of mechanics that we take for granted today, such as the EV system and Abilities. However, because it was a transitional generation of sorts, there are still some pretty serious mechanical changes compared to Generation 6!

Physical and Special Attacks

Unlike the 3 generations after it, Generation 3 does not categorize if a move is physical or special individually. Instead, a move is physical or special depending on what type it is! Here are the types and what attack stat they correspond to! This is especially important in Hidden Power's case. Unlike latter generations, Hidden Power here can can be physical or special depending on which type it is.

The lack of Hidden Abilities

Hidden Abilities were introduced in Generation 5, meaning that a lot of Pokémon lose significant abilities in Generations 3! Pretty much all the relevant ones aren't Generation 3 abilities, with one big exception: Poor Blaziken loses Speed Boost!

KO mechanics

In Generation 3, after a KO, the next Pokémon is switched in BEFORE the turn is over. This means that your next Pokémon will take damage from Sandstorm or Hail before the turn is even over (Sorry, Shedinja!). This is especially big in Doubles because of things like Explosion abuse.

Typing Changes

Fairy-types didn't exist until Generation 6. Also, Steel-types resist Dark- and Ghost-type moves in Generation 3.

Entry Hazards

Not only does Defog not even exist in Generation 3, Spikes is also the only entry hazard. This means that Flying Types and Levitators are 100% immune to entry hazard damage!

Weather

Unlike in Generation 6, weather-summoning abilities cause permanent weather, making Kyogre and Groudon even stronger! On the downside, Sandstorm does NOT boost Tyranitar's Special Defense in this generation, and Snow Warning doesn't even exist.

Leads and the lack of team preview

There is no team preview this generation, meaning that the first Pokémon on your team will ALWAYS be the first Pokémon that gets sent out! Also, the lack of Team Preview means that you will have NO IDEA what the opponent is packing, so playing carefully at the beginning can be key!

Explosion and Selfdestruct

Unlike Generations 5 and 6, Explosion in this generation halves defense right before it fires off, effectively making it double the base power! This makes it an extremely dangerous and effective move, so when you see potential exploders like Metagross, beware! Also, these moves end the turn, so if your target survives, they won't use their move.

Shadow Tag

Shadow Tag traps EVERYTHING in Generation 3, no matter what. There isn't any Shed Shell in this generation either! Yes, even Wobbuffet traps other Wobbuffet. This infamously leads to a match never ending if both Wobbuffet have Leftovers, since Struggle's recoil is based of the amount of damage it does in this generation. This means that Leftovers is banned on Wobbuffet. Hell, even NINTENDO banned Leftovers on Wobbuffet in their tournaments for this reason!

Other Move and Ability changes

Critical Hits: Unfortunately, Critical Hits do DOUBLE damage this generation, not 1.5x.

Various special moves: Generation 6 nerfed the power of a lot of special moves, such as Dragon Pulse, Fire Blast, Hydro Pump, Surf, Thunder, etc. These moves are more powerful
this gen!

Sturdy: This does not act like a Focus Sash. Sorry, Forretress, that Groudon Fire Blast will always OHKO you in the sun!

Paralysis: Unlike in Generation 6, paralysis status DOES effect Electric-types.

Sound moves: These moves no longer ignore Substitutes.

Mean Look: In this generation, Mean Look traps Ghost-types. It can also be Baton Passed.

Mental Herb: This item only blocks infatuation in this generation.

Magic Coat: This does NOT deflect hazards in Generation 3.

Knock Off: This move is always 20 BP in this generation.

if you wanna play adv ubers, go to po, ps doesnt need a ladder when there's only like 3 players

You know Ubers started with RBY Mewtwo right? ._.

But yeah this is a pretty fun metagame, not quite as stally as you might think it is though given powerful offensive threats like Deoxys-A, Latios, Groudon, Kyogre, Mewtwo, etc. That being said Stall is pretty good with stuff like Blissey and Lugia. Calm Mind on anything that learns it is common, Forretress is more or less the only viable spinner, and DD Ray/CB Deoxys-A are probably the best cleaners.

I'm not sure if it was ever common but I like using Magneton in RSE Ubers, it traps Forry/Skarm/weakened CB Gross easily to open up holes for stuff like Groudon or Latios. Magneton also resists BoltBeam so it can Toxic/Para Latis and is also a pretty good Lugia switchin, only thing it can't really come in on is CB Earthquake. CB Ho-Oh is also pretty decent, it has enough coverage to hurt a lot of things and Sacred Fire scares off the usual switch-ins to Banded stuff.

Kind of want to try Mew, SD + Boom with 100 Speed seems pretty rad.

Oh, I guess it doesn't. Toxic or TWave might be good to run then, not like Magneton has any good moves otherwise.

Anyways what do you guys think of Baton Pass since we now have epic Baton Passer Mew and best receiver Deoxys Attack with full stats maxed out with defense boosts so you can live Rapid Spin or something.

Oh god I'm gonna get murdered for mentioning baton pass aren't I.
 
AFAIK most gen 3 Ubers analysis are pretty outdated. Let's revive the only tier where Flygon and Kyogre are both kinda viable.

We are pretending Wobbuffet doesn't exist because Wobb vs Wobb never ends due to Leftovers negating the damage done by Struggle. If anything, ban Wobb + Leftovers, but idk if that's worth it.

BP probably isn't too good with Mew, shit like Roar Latias and Roar Kyogre is pretty common, and they are too bulky for Mew to damage them directly. 252 Mew Ice Beam vs. Soul Dew 4/0 Latias: 93-110 (30.7 - 36.4%) -- 59.8% chance to 3HKO
252 Mew Thunderbolt vs. 240/0 Kyogre: 130-154 (32.4 - 38.4%) -- 2.1% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery (RestTalk w/Roar, EV's are changeable)

I guess you can Taunt Ogre(as well as Latias on the switch), but STAB Surf hurts a lot in rain, and you will struggle to pull the BP of. Also, what are you gonna pass the boosts too? Deo-A dies to anything anyway, while CM can be learned by pretty much every Uber-mon anyway. Passing Swords Dances to physical Ho-Oh could work I guess, since Ho-Oh's natural bulk can allow it to tank a hit or two, plus it has Recover. Safely passing a Drum to Deo-A or Rayquaza is probably GG, but I can't see that working against better players. Interresting idea though, I'll definitely play around it sometime.

Mew is generally outclassed by Mewtwo in any other role though.

Thing is with Baton Pass Mew your already fast enough to out speed any possible Roar/Taunt Pokemon with Taunt since you almost defiantly have Ninjask's boosts. So I think that strategy might actually be really good. Weather teams may be a problem tho.

Also this is probably the one thing Mew can do where it is not outclassed by Mewtwo:

Mewtwo does have higher Speed/Attack and Selfdestruct, but Mew has Explosion (stronger) and boosts quicker since it gets Swords Dance whereas Mewtwo only gets Bulk Up, helping make up for the lack of STAB and letting pressure stuff like Skarm better. Basically you just boost up and attack with physical Ghost/Fighting coverage, which is resisted by nothing and rips apart a lot of common stuff. Explosion all but guarantees Mew will get at least one kill. You can also try Hypnosis on this set, its something Mewtwo doesn't get and can potentially incapacitate the opponent's Mew check for a little while.

Even with the SD boost, I don't feel like Mew hits amazingly hard, and its 100 across the board bulk isn't as good in Ubers. I'd take CB Deo-A or CB/DD Quaza over Mew any day. Shame, cuz it was one of my favorite mons as a kid.
The thing is though is that they can't Explode. Mew is more of a pure wall/stall-breaker whereas Deo-A/Ray are cleaners.
 
i would assume gengar is pretty good in this tier, it rapes forretress trying to spin (especially with the non-existence of pursuit tyranitar / houndoom), the ground immunity is amazing, and it can explode on blissey/ho-oh to pave a sweep for something. sun boosted fire punch probably smacks the fuck out of metagross too.

Anyways I was wondering if Deoxys-N has a niche at all since the smogon analysis is pretty barren and really only says just use Speed or Attack instead.

Also couldn't you just not run Deoxys-A and instead run Deoxys-D and get hazards up and not worry about trapping and probably stalling out spinners since you have epic pressure and recover and seismic toss and...

gengar can works versus stall, but falls through against offense(which generally is better). it can literally switch into nothing unless its like e-speed/superpower from deo-a/quaza/mew, and all the cm spam/specially bulky mons forces it to boom earlier than you might want it to. ogre, groudon(dislikes burn), lati@s are all solid answers to it, assuming standard ou set, and it might not even be able to boom vs lati. its great spatk just isnt as great in ubers, and it lacks the bulk to take hits. id use it solely because of its immunities tho. but yea, it shuts down stall very well if played right

Recover it off I guess? Though your right it does sort of beats not rest/taunt variants. But Forretress does kind of die from Seismic Toss/Night Shade spam so your gonna have to run HP bug but then your just running a ton of attacks, so it's not a reliable poke to stall it out at all.
 
i would assume gengar is pretty good in this tier, it rapes forretress trying to spin (especially with the non-existence of pursuit tyranitar / houndoom), the ground immunity is amazing, and it can explode on blissey/ho-oh to pave a sweep for something. sun boosted fire punch probably smacks the fuck out of metagross too.
its at this point i ask myself is there a tier where gengar doesn't work in
 
Just noticed there's no ADV Ubers viability rank thread. (well, I at least searched through the threads with the ADV tag) I would be willing to write up the OP and maintain it as I have been able to play this tier more lately. (not as much as a long time ago but still) It'll at least start some discussion and maybe get more people to join?

This thread has been in hibernation for a while, but now that it's in a general Ubers forum, I hope it gets more activity.

I have updated this thread to be like the others, but the original post is still in a hide tag. I really respect Asterat for getting discussion on this started early. I hope to learn much from this thread, because this is the only generation of Ubers I've never played. Here's hoping that won't be true soon!
 
I don't think this has been stated clearly enough: The Lati twins own the metagame. With the exception of Toxic, HP bug, explosion, HP ghost, shadow ball, strong extremespeed, or augmented ice beam or dragon claw these things really never die. They are also by far the strongest special attackers in the game (life orb and choice specs were nonexistent) and the best bulky pivots. Actually fully SpD latias takes hits more than 3/4 as well as blissey. They also have an excellent speed tier, the only common things that outspeed are Deoxys-A and Mewtwo- two huge threats that team support can easily handle. I don't think they are broken, but they do shape the metagame. I can't really think of a scenario where one or more latis doesn't fit into your team. It isn't GSC snorlax, but I think they're better than ADV OU tyranitar, or about that good.
