The hot stench of the metropolis suffocates all newcomers. The streets bustle with activity: businessmen scurry, children yell, and the homeless beg. The hustle-and-bustle city is tireless; it is clockwork. Everyone lives within their own microcosm, content to keep their head down and live another day.

Rather, most are content. There are those who know how to escape. They yearn for something greater, something primal. They gather at a pub down by Main Street and 10th called The Antidote. No, they're not there for the tempting booze or the allure of getting laid. They come to fight. A man with a missing eye and ripping biceps guards the back doorway which presumably leads to the basement. He spits on the ground and address you firmly.

"Oi, where you off to?" he grumbles.

"Nowhere in Particular," you reply candidly.

The man gives a knowing nod and steps out of the way. It worked!

Down and down the concrete stairs go. They lead you into a cavernous underground room. The basement: Nowhere in Particular. Its floor is cold pavement and its brick walls are unforgiving. Metal folding chairs, wobbly card tables, and other materials litter the room. But none of that matters; what catches your eye is the middle of the room. Underneath the flickering fluorescent lights is a battle. A formidable Fighting-type Pokemon slams an unsuspecting foe into the floor with a deafening thud. Its trainer sticks a fist pump of pride into the cool air, as the basement reverberates back to silence.

"Nice fight," calls a blond-haired figure with green pants, sitting backwards in a chair. "But I believe our training is over... We have a visitor."

They both turn towards you. A lithe young woman with short pink hair grunts and stamps her foot into the ground. "LET'S DO THIS."

The blond makes a motion to stop her. "Easy there, Maylene." He approaches you and offers a firm handshake. "Hi there, I'm Birkal!" he says, brimming with enthusiasm. "Welcome to Nowhere in Particular. Or more formally, welcome to Fight Gym. Let me give you a quick rundown on the rules here."


"Rule Number One: You do not talk about Fight Gym."

"Rule Number Two: Each Pokemon battles for the knock out. Here at Fight Gym, if a damaging combination brings its opponent's HP to zero and scores a KO, that move has no cooldown. Passive damage from combinations will not work; the combination must KO outright with damage output alone. Go nuts."

"Rule Number Three: All Fighting-type Pokemon can equip Expert Belt or Black Belt on top of their held item. They've trained hard enough that they've earned their stripes."

"Rule Number Four: This one's a flurry of minor rules, so stick with me here. All Special Attacks cost two more energy. Our low ceiling prevents Bounce, Sky Drop, and Fly from being used entirely. Fire-types and Dark-types have a flat 10% accuracy boost due to the darkness. Vacuum Wave and Mach Punch receive a +1 priority boost. And finally, Hidden Power is a physical-type move down here."


"Think you can handle all that?" Birkal asks with a smile. "Let me know if you have any questions."

"UGH, SHUT UP," Maylene shouts angrily. A small crowd emerges from the shadows; their interest is piqued. "ENOUGH CHAT. LET'S GET THIS FIGHT STARTED."

Down here, it's kind of hard to see what's going on in the lightning-fast fighting gym. What I definitely just saw, though, was Lucario displaying some of his trickery to work around a difficult Pokemon and land some damage as well - still, Tomohawk lands about a million damage on Lucario, who is already nearing half health...its up to Birkal to keep the momentum momentating if he wants to keep up!

I'm going to have to ask you to show your calculations, Leethoof. Lucario should have only taken 29.25 damage from Tomohawk's Aura Sphere (which should also cost seven energy). Blaziken is at +2 Speed which should have cost 1.38 energy. It's been a pain to have to go back and recalculate every single one of your reffings -- you do the math already, just post it.

Alright then, here we go, friendly neighbourhood Flamestrike back off hiatus to bring you some live Gym Battle action from Nowhere In Particular! Huh, what do you mean, where is it? It's Nowhere In Par-actually you know what never mind. Anyway, we come to the match already in progress with the leader Birkal and his Blaziken in a bit of a hole against deadfox081's Gallade, Shank! But Blaziken has Mega Evolved into Mega Blaziken and certainly won't go down without a fight! And sure enough, he starts us off with a thunderous Brave Bird, sending Shank halfway across the room! However, Shank decides not to resort to physical fighting and opts for a Psyshock, harming Blaziken with mental energies as the crowd booes the long-range offense. Oh, but looks like he's trying for the best of both worlds with a Psychic to throw Blaziken right back to the other side of the room! But what's this? Blaziken shielded himself with a timely Protect, and now he's going to make Shank pay! BAM! Another big Brave Bird! Shank is really starting to feel those, but at the same time that recoil has to sting! And there's another Psyshock, leaving Blaziken wobbly! He can't take much more! But now those flames are burning brighter than ever! Blaziken lives for the tight moment, and as his Blaze activates and his Mega Speed Boost boosts his speed right into the stratosphere, it's time to see just how Birkal and Blaziken react when the chips are down!

Endure can save Blaziken from Shank's offense, but not from himself! Will he break through the confusion and hit the Gallade? Oh no! Blaziken hit himself in his confusion! And that's enough! Blaziken has fainted! First blood goes to deadfox, and now the Gym Leader is going to have to work extra hard to come back! But the leader is a wily one, and it's still anyone's game! Birkal wastes no time choosing a new Pokemon to replace the fallen Blaziken, sending out Tinku the Tomohawk with a Rare Candy and an Expert Belt! The Tomohawk wastes no time intimidating Shank and thus dropping Shank's Attack, but then deadfox decides he doesn't like this matchup, and switches Shank the Gallade for Predator the Braviary! Predator comes in with a Life Orb to take full advantage of Sheer Force, and Birkal ends up counter-switching, bringing Aikido the Lucario back into the fight! Now that we finally know which Pokemon will be fighting this round, let's see what happens!

Aikido starts us off, and wastes no time trying to take down Predator, slamming the Braviary with a powerful Rock Slide! That had to sting! And sure enough it stung quite a lot; Predator flinched because of it! Talk about a tough break for deadfox! Birkal and Aikido have no mercy though, and they charge back in with an Ice Punch! Another strong hit, and already Predator has taken some major damage! But this time he's able to strike back, and does so immediately! There's a Heat Wave! You would think that a Braviary wouldn't do much with a Special attack given its poor Special Attack stat, but with a Life Orb and Sheer Force almost any attack will do some solid damage! And now, it looks like Aikido was about to attack but stopped, sensing a move from its opponent! Looks like it's following Birkal's order to Counter any Superpower attack from Predator! But I think Predator has a bit more in mind than a mere Superpower... Oh my! It's a Crush Claw + Superpower combination! It hits for massive damage and slams Aikido into the club wall as the crowd cheers wildly for the huge blow! And sure enough Aikido has fainted! That's two down for the leader! Things are looking grim for Birkal now, but now three of deadfox's four Pokemon have sustained serious damage! With two Pokemon still at full health, and one of them still unknown, can Birkal turn the tide of this fight, or will deadfox run away with the win and the badge?
