Hello all and welcome to the awesome Rock Qualifier! Awesome because I am reffing and awesome because it is between two people that held the title the Rock Gym Leader at some point. And this gym is one that is really hard to open for some reason.

Didn't understand? then let me explain.

The first Rock Gym Leaders were the pair Leethoof + SevenDeadlySins, that was around 2 years ago (august 2012 to be more precise). But due to many reasons, that gym took 8 months to open, with only Leethoof as the Leader.

Leethoof then proceeded to defend his gym soundly against Elevator Music. A significant victory that made the Rock Gym a Gym to be truly feared.

Or not.

On the next three matches, against LouisCyphre, Complications and Waterwarrior, Leethoof, while played well, was pushing the DQ beyond the acceptable limits. He ended up being DQ'd on two of those battles (his match vs Lou has simply stopped as both disappeared). If you like history, a DQ on a Gym Leader, aside from that, only happened once. Certainly not twice in a row. Because of that he was stripped of his position as Gym Leader by a very angry Gym Committee (he was like an inch away from being banned from gyms entirely).

Around that time akela, a newcomer, somewhat, was reffing like a mad maniac and training/maxing all Rock mons. The purpose, at the time, was to challenge Leethoof for the leadership. But I guess without Leethoof, the path was clear. His Rock Team was (and is) second to none, having all non-legend rocks, a lot of them maxxed and was (and is) without a doubt, a team any leader would dream to have and any challenger would have nightmares to face.

Akela was "kinda" assigned to the Rock Gym position a little after Leet was gone. Emphasis on kinda. While it was a well-known fact around IRC and on the backstage, there wasn't (iirc) any post saying "akela is rock gym leader". That and akela's difficulty in creating and, more importantly, testing a suitable arena meant that Rock went without a leader for quite some time.

And then Leethoof returned determined to prove himself worthy of getting the Rock Gym back. That operation involved posting swiftly on Gym Matches he was as battler and as ref, winning a badge and quickly finishing a match in the process. That coupled with the good performance against Elevator Music, made the Gym Committee (still mad) willing to give leet a second chance, against the natural candidate akela.

To get the Gym, leet will have to prove able to play seriously enough to win and to not get DQ'd. On the other hand, akela will have to show, once and for all, that he isn't all about reffing and that he can convince as a battler.

And now let's get to business! Hopefully this will decide, once and for all, who is the leader.

Looking at the teams, pay special attention, from Leethoof's team, to Gumbo the Cradily as it defeats half of akela's team and is always a strong contestant on Rock Gym Battles (qualifiers and real ones). From akela's team, pay special attention to Gigan the Kabutops, since its interesting movepool allows it to hit really hard all Leet's mon, aside from the aforementioned Gumbo.

Do you have a favourite? Well I do. Let's hope that our favorites win (and are the same :D)!

Now let's take a look at the teams!

Team Leethoof

Bastiodon (Vanguard) (M)
Nature
: Quiet (Adds * to Sp Atk; A 15% decrease (rounded down) in Base Speed and a +10% increase in accuracy (e.g. 85 becomes 95) on an opponent's attacks)

Vanguard is cool-headed both in and out of battle. Slow to act and slower to rouse, he calmly prepares himself and his team for any situation. Recently, however, Vanguard has taken more of a backseat approach to his leadership, content to let others do his work for now. He is proud of how he brought together his ragtag band into some sort of a cohesive team, and is now ready to harvest the fruit of his efforts.

Rhyperior [Helton] (Male)
Nature
: Sassy (+ Sp.Def, -Speed)

In the presence of Helton's big jolly and outgoing personality, nearly everyone instantly feels comfortable, as if they have known him for decades. A dedicated partier and generally social guy, Helton has taken the reins of leadership for Lee's team. He fights instinctively and without much thought, but is usually rather successful. And when he isn't, he shrugs it off as some good training and cheers on the rest of his team.

"Alright everyone - this is it! Together, we can reclaim our title as gym leader! I want you all to do your absolute best for this match, and I truly believe that we can do it! Do just as we have trained, and work together as the close-knit team I know you are, and we can manage to grab ourselves another gym victory! Helton, you take it from here."

"Har har har! Remember everyone, we are the best rocks around, hands down. Ain't nobody going to take our title from us again! Har har! Don' be nervous, though an' don' worry, as long as you work hard, it don' matter whether we win or lose - the fight - and party afterwards - will ROCK! Let's get 'em, Stratons! This is our fight, and it will be our victory!"

Hopes run high amongst Don's proud and eager team, and a resounding cheer goes out in favor of Helton and Don's pep-talks. The Pokemon are itching at a chance to fight, even those like Slag and Cradily who could usually care less. The entire gang is here, from Don's entire family to the twin's favorite Musharna and Don's original fighting duo of Voodoom and Toxicroak. Even with the pressure of the importance, the tension is very low amongst Don's supporters - whether this is from some of Siddhartha's machinations or just pure confidence, the crowd and the team is ready. Everyone awaits the inevitably explosive beginning of the match.

"Anyways, let's see who's fightin' it out first. Har har, some folks we ain' seen in a while. Gumbo, Ra, rock 'em hard!"

"Alright, Helton, if you say so. I'll take whatever they can throw at me!"

"Down in the sky, I will fight. Their flames and my mind will crash yesterday. Up there, is victory."

[Expert Belt] [Focus Sash]

"There will be no party for you. Nor will there be a party for me. When this is over, we shall return to the mountain and continue with our lives. The day is never over and neither is our job."

"Let us begin. First out will be the Guardian of the mountain. Olmec, take your Charged Stone and fend off any invasions."

Probopass @ Charged Stone

"And Littlefoot, ready your eyes for tricks and trades. If need be, you shall strengthen our defenses and leave them wondering how to penetrate our womb."

Aurorus @ Expert Belt

Probopass: Flash Cannon (Cradily) > Stealth Rock > Flash Cannon (Cradily)
IF Cradily uses Mirror Coat, THEN Thunder Wave (Cradily) the first time, Toxic (Cradily) the second time, and Iron Defense the third time.
IF Cradily is under the effects of a Protective/Evasive maneuver, THEN Flash Cannon (Solrock) instead

Aurorus: Ice Beam (Cradily) > Flash Cannon (Cradily) > Ice Beam (Cradily)
IF Cradily uses Mirror Coat, THEN Light Screen the first time, Reflect the second time, and Dragon Tail (Cradily) the third time.
IF Cradily is under the effects of a Protective/Evasive maneuver, THEN Dark Pulse (Solrock) instead

Gumbo: Protect -> Ancientpower (Littlefoot) -> Ancientpower (Littlefoot)
Ra: Light Screen -> Rock Slide -> Rock Slide

Round 1!

And we are on!

After a bumpy start both trainers arrived in the battlefield and now we are about to see some intense battling! Here is hoping that both trainers keep it up throughout the entire battle.

And you can be certain: keeping focus on battle in the entire time is extremely hard. A mistake is bound to happen sometime when you lower your guard. And for that to happen, you can't lose focus...which is hard and extenuating.

well enough babbling, let's get to the battle!

Leethoof/Don Straton sends out the unusual pair of Gumbo the Cradily and Ra the Solrock, to which akela/akela counters with Olmec the Probopass and Littlefoot the Aurorus. Aurorus may seem like a weird move, and it kinda is, but Cradily is an extremely good pokemon in this situation and having a mon capable of defeating it is crucial. Solrock may also seem strange, but it is great for support and this is the first round and setting up is a marvelous strategy for the begining of a hard battle.

So the sendout was all-in-all lovely.

The battle begins with Gumbo erecting a Protective Barrier and Ra a Light Screen against the special attacks that will sure come. Also Gumbo is really important, so this was kinda expected. On the other side of the field, Olmec and Littlefoot attack Ra with Flash Cannon and Dark Pulse respectively, ignoring completely Gumbo's barrier.

On the second round, the roles are reversed and akela's team set up, with Olmec setting up Stealth Rocks, unharmed by Ra's Rock Slide...although the same can't be said about Little Foot. Still, the Aurorus managed to attack Gumbo with a powerful Flash Cannon, right before receiving an Ancient Power to the face.

Finally, Ra creates a second Rock Slide and this time Little Foot flinches! Olmec carries on though, feeling the need to be the example for his partner, and resumed the assault on Gumbo with a powerful STAB Flash Cannon. The cradily is unfazed by it though and continues to attack LittleFoot with Ancient Power.

With a round in, Leethoof has a small hp advantage, as well as light screen. But Akela got Rocks up and will move last this round. So this is still an even game!
