Hunter x Hunter (spoilers ITT)

Hi there. Since this has become one of my favorite animes and there wasn't a thread for in The Great Library, I decided to make one myself. This series was originally made in 1999 but has been rebooted and redone recently in 2011. While the plot has not changed, the animations and visuals have been cleaned up and improved. There is a manga that goes along with this series, but it is currently on hiatus and is set to return in June.

A Hunter is one who travels the world doing all sorts of dangerous tasks. From capturing criminals to searching deep within uncharted lands for any lost treasures. Gon is a young boy whose father disappeared long ago, being a Hunter. He believes if he could also follow his father's path, he could one day reunite with him. After becoming 12, Gon leaves his home and takes on the task of entering the Hunter exam, notorious for its low success rate and high probability of death to become an official Hunter. He befriends the revenge-driven Kurapika, the doctor-to-be Leorio and the rebellious ex-assassin Killua in the exam, with their friendship prevailing throughout the many trials and threats they come upon taking on the dangerous career of a Hunter.

That's a the plot summary in its most basic form. For those who are caught up or need a refresher on what has happened up to the most recent episode of the anime (ep 130).

Hunter Exam Arc Episodes 1-21: The journey begins with Gon taking a series of bizarre tests to become a Hunter, which includes navigating a deadly jungle, hunting other applicants, killing a wild boar, an extraordinarily long underground marathon and making sushi. During the Hunter Exam, Gon meets and befriends three of the applicants, Kurapika, Killua andLeorio. The series' first antagonist is also introduced as one of the applicants. Hisoka, is a complex villain who uses playing cards as weapons, and who views Gon as an "unripe fruit" that he will take great pleasure in killing once he's grown up enough to present a challenge. Before the end of the Hunter Exam, Killua faces his brother, Illumi, who makes him come home before he can even finish the Exam.

Zoldyck Family Arc episodes 22-26: After passing the Hunter Exam, Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio goes off a new adventure of springing Killua out from his parents' mansion in Kukuroo Mountain. After three reunite with Killua, Leorio leaves for medical school, so he can become a professional doctor, and Kurapika, to find work as a bounty hunter. Gon and Killua decide to go together in Heavens Arena to gain combat experience by training.

Heavens Arena Arc episodes 27-36: Gon and Killua enter to Heavens Arena, a 251-floor building where people compete through fighting tournaments around the clock for cash. It is here they meet the Kung-Fu master Wing, who teaches them about Nen, a chi-like energy that can be use to manifest superhuman powers. He teaches a young child named Zushi, who joins Gon and Killua to fight in the tournament to gain money and experience. Hisoka is also in the tournament. Gon finally get to battle Hisoka again, to show off how much he has improved.

YorkNew City Arc episodes 37-58: The four main characters reunite for the world's largest auction in a sprawling metropolis called Yorknew City.Gon, Killua, and Leorio try different methods to make enough money to buy Greed Island, a Joystation Console video game that could help Gon find his father. Meanwhile, Kurapika works as a bodyguard for Neon Nostrade, flesh collector and daughter of the head of a Mafia family, in order for him to get closer to his clan's Scarlet eyes that are said to to be auctioned at the said city. The Phantom Troupe, a group of thieves, who had slaughtered Kurapika's clan are also gathering at Yorknew City.

Greed Island Arc episodes 59-75: Gon, Killua, and Leorio return to help Kurapika’s recovery after the battle against the Phantom Troupe. Leorio and Kurapika leave again, returning the focus to Gon and Killua. Gon and Killua are able to join a team hired by the billionaire, Battera, to play the game. Gon and Killua are joined and later Nen-trained by Bisky, a 57-year-old woman who looks like a 12-year-old girl, and is a master and experienced teacher of Nen. As the story progresses, a player nicknamed the Bomber is blowing other players up. Gon, Killua, and Biscuit team up with other players and take the Bomber out. The Phantom Troupe also travels to Greed Island, looking for a Nen-Remover to remove the Nen dagger on Chrollo Lucilfer put by Kurapika to null his powers.

Chimera Ant Arc episodes 76-Ongoing: After leaving Greed Island, Gon and Killua meet up with Kite. They're all hired to investigate a strange insect leg that washed up on a beach. Genetic testing determines that the leg belongs to an abnormally large Queen Chimera Ant which just happens to wash up on the shore of an island called the NGL (Neo Green Life). The Chimera Ants proceed to wipe most of the population out and spawn hundreds of offspring for next generation before Gon, Killua, and Kite arrive to stop her.

  • What theories do you have on how things play out?
  • Who are your favorite characters? Least favorites?
  • Which characters would you like to see come back after this season?

Super pumped for the new manga chapters, I should probably reread the whole thing one of these days so I'm not lost when the story continues.

Stopped following the anime after like 40 eps, so can't really talk about that...

im stoked for SPACE

the manga is good but the art becomes frankly atrocious as it goes on. you can tell that the mangaka is phoning in the drawing, I remember a scene in greed island where he just scribbled where there were supposed to be crowds. that said, I think HxH has the coolest "power system" and nen/hatsu allow for a wide range of abilities while keeping them relatively balanced, meryem notwithstanding

if anyone else is a hxh manga superfan vm me we can discuss the plot/space/kurapika/etc!!

I always considered making this thread because it saddened me that nobody else ever took the initiative...and I absolutely love HxH.

I'm an anime only viewer (for now) so I may shy away from this thread in fear of spoilers (although the internet spoiled most of Chimera Ant for me), but I plan on starting the manga when the new chaps start this Summer after CA is all said and done. HxH has quickly become my favorite anime (surpassing FMA:B) when I started it last August, and continues to impress me today. Episode 126 is probably one of the most flawless episodes I have ever seen of any anime, so I'd really recommend watching it just for that reason, Aladyyn

Super stoked for next weeks ep!

Oh and I tend to save gifs from Tumblr and shit so I may shit up the thread with them at random times but I'll be sure to spoiler mark them in case people have not seen the most recent ep. :x

I love HxH as well, and I'm glad the new chapters are coming out soon, especially since the last chapter built up a lot of excitement!
So one thing I'd like to discuss is favorite characters. While I like all of them, my personal favorite is Ging, simply because he's been hyped to be very powerful and also because he's a source of a lot of humour whenever he's been seen. What about you guys?

I think I speak for a lot of people when I say that killua was my favorite until we hit the ant arc. Killua is pretty bad ass and takes nothing from anyone, but after seeing Gon in this arc, oh lawdy, I have changed my mind. Gon is so optimistic and hopeful that he will one day meet his father, was hopeful that kite could be saved, etc and combined with a ridiculous power he could be unstoppable in the very near future. I also really like Hisoka because he's just so fucking weird, and hella strong. I can't wait for the next arc, but I'm sad to see the ant one go. I don't read the manga yet so idk what is coming next. I can't imagine it will disappoint though.

and this was after episodes 130...
after what I saw from this episode I am literally pissed I am all the way caught up because I have to wait a whole fucking week to see the next episode. Tuesday come quick pls, ty.

The latest manga chapter is really exciting, the Dark Continent saga seems to be building up - but I wish Gon and Killua make an appearance soon :)

133:

Really solid ep. This episode confirmed for me how the king dies, which I sort of expected but wasn't 100% sure. I fucking hate Pouf so I love seeing him in this state. Youpi's death(?) was odd, but if he's really gone I'll miss him. I feel like Pitou's puppets falling should have been a instant giveaway to Pouf that she's dead but I guess not.

134: I seriously feel like I'm finishing a lengthy show in itself when this is just an arc. But so many damn things have happened up until this point that it is insane. The King is one of the most complex / badass / GOAT characters I have ever seen in any anime. I can't wait to see how it all ends next week (even though I know) and how they'll approach the next arc. I think I'm more excited for the new OST's than anything else. HxH has some A+ music that fits the characters / setting / etc perfectly.

Ko....mugi

fwiw in the manga, chimera ants takes up more chapters of hxh than any other arc and when it finished was almost half the manga (132/318 chapters, ~40%)

That moment when you would be happy that the end of the anime was the actual end because it was pretty darn good and also because you are scared that togashi will end up doing shit or not finishing the manga

148 was awesome, but it really looked like an actual ending, it was weird because togashi said he is only half-way done with Hxh.

I just finished the anime. It was indeed excellent. A few notes from me:

- The Meruem/Komugi episode was probably the best of the series.
- Gon being so enraged over Kite's death... meh. I didn't really get to know Kite well enough to care. Oh my, he punched Gon as a child. What a deep bond they have. Reminds me of Luffy and Ace--you see pretty much nothing of Ace throughout the series, and then are expected to care when he abruptly dies in the war. And then AFTER the death, they spend several episodes talking about Luffy and Ace's backstory. You'd think they would do that BEFORE he died.
- Have you all noticed specialists tend to be of ambiguous gender? Alluka (most of the family calls them a boy, Killua calls them a girl), Neferpitou (apparently much more ambiguous in the manga than the anime), Kurapika (there was a minor scene in the anime where he was dressed as a girl and someone makes a comment about it). Related, Komugi seems to be a specialist but is completely unsexualized, even in her relationship with Meruem. Yes, she's a child, but we all know that doesn't mean shit in anime.
- Alluka is an awesome character and I am disappointed they were introduced at the very end. Are they actually a child of the Zoldyck family? There were a few lines suggesting Alluka "came from elsewhere." Killua commanded Alluka to not grant wishes for anyone else--does that actually work? So Alluka can meet other people and won't make requests of them? Or, if Alluka starts making requests, can Killua tell them to cut it out? Is "Something" a demon? An entity made of Nen?
- I take it Kite's slots are a Nen restriction that enables him to transfer his soul to other bodies?
- The ending: What happened to Hisoka?!? What happened to "Gon is my prey"? Hisoka wasn't even shown in the ending montage! This bit was built up to be a major part of the story early on, and then they did nothing with it. Boooooo.

^ About the last point: HXH the anime (like most shonen) is based on HXH manga, and HXH the manga has had crippling hiatus issues (the greed island arc took about 7 irl years to finish because the mangaka, Togashi, had to take multiple hiatus because he was sick).

Basically, the anime ending isn't the "real" ending, but we have no idea if we'll ever get more because Togashi goes on hiatus too often.
