Gen 4 Sample Teams for Starting Ubers (Community Thread) [WIP]

With all of this talk about banning things from Ubers, I thought it would be a good idea to take a step back and remember the days when Ubers was nothing but pure fun. Following Fireburn’s [Gen 6] Sample Teams for Starting Ubers, I decided we needed a similar thread for the superior generation of Ubers, DPP. DPP is often considered to be one of the most balanced Ubers metagames. While Arceus was allowed in very late DPP in the form of “Farceus” (an arceus with 100 EV’s across every stat), current DPP Ubers tournaments and most casual matches do not Arceus in play. The lack of Arceus in DPP allowed for a much more versatile metagame. Sure, mons like Kyogre and Groudon were still as popular as ever, but as the tier aged so did the average play style. While early DPP teams were often stallish and slow, many later teams took a form of heavy offense, which one may attribute to the heavy offense phase DPP OU suffered when Deoxys-S was first dropped from Ubers to OU.

But the purpose of this thread is not to explain the differences between DPP and its future (and past) counterparts, but instead to give newer players an equal opportunity to participate in this fantastic tier. I have taken teams which I believe serve as the best representation of the tier with some help from some very high profile players during the generation. As this is a community thread, you are free to submit teams of your own, and I would encourage active participation in this thread as a whole. I believe the best way to decide if a team should be submitted is by majority, so if the community AND high profile players during DPP believe a team should be submitted, I would be more than happy to add it here. Because my time will be cut short in the near future, anyone willing to volunteer to write brief descriptions of the submitted teams would be playing a large part in giving this tier a second chance at its past glory.

[Don't judge me for using XY sprites in a DPP thread]

Japanese Killer Wasps is a great example of a classic Uber stall team. Unlike the stall teams at this current time, stall teams back then focused entirely on outstalling the opponent. This team dates back to shortly after Platinum’s release, where the dominant team set up is Deoxys-S and 4-5 powerful attackers, often unaccompanied by a spin blocker. By using Forretress to easily set up and spin entry hazards, and Shedinja to wall a decent portion of the metagame, as well as the unorthodox Taunt/Will-o-Wisp Mewtwo to defeat opposing stall teams, this team often gave Ace Matador the upper hand against many battlers during that time, and remained in the top 5 in the Uber leaderboard for quite some time.

Earthworm's stall team, while similar, forgoes Stalltwo and Giratina in favor of the more reliable Kyogre check, Latias. Both teams continue to utilize Shedinja as an excellent pivot, as it comes in easily on mons such as Kyogre, forcing them to switch, while gaining for a free Baton Pass to the respective counter of whatever their opponent brought in. This actively keeps the momentum in EW's and Ace Matador's favor, despite both of them using pure stall teams. Earthworm's inclusion of Kyogre also not only allows for dual weather, but also as a late game sweeper when he has significantly weakened his opponents team using his various hazards.

Rayquaza @ Life Orb
Ability: Air Lock
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature

- ExtremeSpeed
- Dragon Claw
- Earthquake

This team of mine was designed to overrun my opponent with hard hitters to eventually find a late game sweep with either Lucario or Rayquaza. Similarly to the Rayquaza + Salamence core that was used by some players during DPP, many teams are generally only capable of handing either Lucario or Rayquaza, but not both. Because the most problematic mons that can stop a +2 Extremespeed sweep are bulky steels like Choice Scarf Jirachi, I tacked on a dual steel resist in Dialga + Palkia to help with that. Dialga has the added benefit of being a Hasty nature to outspeed offensive Groudon and the like with ease. Outrage 2HKO's RestTalk Kyogre which is nice too. Giratina-O is just an all around excellent mon in DPP. It's a great revenge killer with Shadow Sneak, handles Groudon relatively well and destroys unsuspecting Scizor + Forry so long as the sun is up.

Meteor Shower - reachzero

Rayquaza @ Life Orb
Trait: Air Lock
EVs: 40 Atk / 252 SAtk / 216 Spd
Naive Nature (+Spd, -SDef)

- Stealth Rock

Mewtwo @ Life Orb
Trait: Pressure
EVs: 24 Atk / 252 SAtk / 232 Spd
Hasty Nature (+Spd, -Def)
- Aura Sphere
- Ice Beam
- Selfdestruct
- Flamethrower

Reachzero's team was a huge contributing factor to the increase of lead Rayquaza's. While previously lead Rayquaza's often ran focus sash, reachzero opted for Life Orb to be able to 2HKO threats like Deoxys-S with Fire Blast + ExtremeSpeed and non specially defensive Groudon with Draco Meteor. reachzero opted for Brick Break > Outrage for the ability to OHKO Tyranitar, but it also has the added benefit of breaking screens in case you run into Baton Pass.

Scizor + Dialga act as reachzero's primary resists while still keeping offensive pressure with fast, offensive Dialga and U-Turn Scizor. Palkia acts as his much needed scarfer and he mentioned he opted for Outrage as he hates relying on Thunder's accuracy, but it should be noted that Outrage also has the added benefit of OHKOing Latias, 2HKOing most Kyogre, and not being completely walled by Blissey.

this team basically works by creating mometum from turn 1 and then it's really hard to stop it without something faster. Lum CM Ogre fucks with stall so bad it's not even funny. No spinblocker might seem counter intuitive with a Deoxys lead but HP Fire helps with that, as well as the very low amount of opportunities the opponent has to spin against it. Scizor's the only physical member for lack of a good special counterpart. Everything on the team hits as hard as possible to avoid giving free heals to defensive mons. Scarf Palkia mostly helps vs offense.

Deoxys @ Focus Sash

EVs: 24 Atk / 112 Def / 136 SpA / 236 Spe

Made this with BKC right before upl. Deo-N is kind of an odd lead but it does well against other Deoxys leads, especially the Speed forme. Rest of the team is pretty standard I guess, DD Groudon is an animal.

I'm looking for the original owner of the team Iconic used here: http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/smogtours-gen4ubers-12385

I've seen a lot of players change it around a bit so I'll list what I see of it below often. I want to add it to the OP but I'd like know whoever made it (could be Iconic for all I know).

Deo-S / CM Latios / SubCM Giratina-O / Wobb / Lucario / CM Taunt Mewtwo w/ LO or sometimes just 4 attacks

As a player who started competitive Ubers back in late BW2, I have to say, this tier is really damn refreshing. No team preview, no Ekiller, no Xerneas, just innovative sets and some really cool strategies. Thanks to absdaddy for teaching me how to play in DPP. It's really fun. For players who haven't tried DPP yet, give it a shot!

The team used in that replay is august's Henry. Obviously, it's not the exact variant you're looking for, but it is what Iconic is using imo.

love the thread idea though, i've heard quite a few times that not being able to build properly was the factor that was driving new people away, hopefully this thread will change it a bit - might post something in the future

I'm new to Gen 4, but this is my best team and I managed to peak the gen 4 ladder & go 4-0 in Ubersstars using mostly this build. Garchomp has an excellent base tier of 102, allowing it to outrun most dragons barring the Lati twins and Choice Scarf users. Once Salac Berry activates, even these dragons will get outrun and destroyed. Its high Speed and excellent offensive presence makes setting up Substitutes very easy, and Sand Veil often allows Chompy to obtain free Swords Dances if sand is up. With TTar and Garchomp decided upon, I knew I needed a check for Kyogre and a powerful wallbreaker in general, so I chose Palkia for the role. I also needed a check to Scarf Palkia and Dialga, both of which I was very weak to. I wound up picking specially defensive Jirachi and liberally abuse its slow U-Turns so it does not bring the team's offensive pressure to a halt. Giratina-O gave the team a much-needed Ground immunity and priority, and LO Deoxys-A is just a ridiculous Pokemon with sick power and coverage; it improves the team's match-up vs. Stall tremendously.

I've considered making Tyranitar a bulkier variant instead of the pure suicide lead it currently is. Doing so would give the team a better chance of keeping sand up, making enemy weather sweepers useless and increasing Garchomp's chances of haxing with Sand Veil. However, the current set has a great match-up vs common leads and usually gets me off to good starts, so if I can keep / continue to build up momentum I have an excellent chance of winning. This team is extremely weak to Skarmory, so I've considered running a coverage move over Shadow Ball on Deoxys to deal with it. I like nailing Mewtwo and Latios though! Jirachee helped a little with this IIRC, I know I showed it to him on IRC.

Well, this team is built around Scarf Kyogre, and weakening its checks. Deo-A is being used as the lead, as I kind of want the oop's lead out of the way as soon as possible, Signal beam is there to remove both Deo Formes, and hurt T-tar, whilst E-speed helps remove other deoxys. Ray is there to smash holes in things, like it was a proto-Ekiller, especially since finding an opportunity isn't too difficult in this gen. Yes, SD+Overheat is a thing in gen 4. Gira-O is in the same boat as Rayquaza, helping punch holes into the opposition, so one weakens a check, the other one smashed through.

Wobba is to trap stuff, mainly the likes of Blissey, Lati@s, and Palkia. While a mirror coat removes the latter two, Blissey is taken down by tickle+ pursuit. Yes, I'll likely lose Wobba in the process, but removing a team's best Kyogre stopper is worth it... usually. Scizor is the obligatory Dragon resist, and also pursuit traps the latis, non-Stalltwo/Flamethrower mewtwo, and Tickled Pokemon, as well as momentum-grabbing with U-turn, and being a 3rd source of priority via bullet punch.

Kyogre, I usually switch in twice. The first time to cause an opponent to switch to their Kyogre Stopper, usually after Deo-A gets KO'd, the second time sometime after Wobba removes the check. That STAB water spout just destroys, and with the opposing team's kyogre stoppers out of the way, it can often just rack up KO after KO.

How to use this team: try to anti-lead with Deo-A, trap and KO Kyogre Stoppers like Palkia using Wobba, use Rayquaza and Giratina to cause more destruction, and eventually, just have Kyogre use Water Spout.

people asked me so ok!!!

Note: all of my teams will beat iconic. This is a fact.

First is Neuer Neuer. One day on shoddy i thought of a tentacruel lead and wanted to piss off iconic so i added dual sub seeders. What was supposed to be a joke turned out to be quite a cool team that ive changed very few times over the years. Giratina has had hp fire / stone edge / thunder / no eq / etc and ludicolo had grass knot for a little bit for sub cm kyogres. As for accolades, the team was used like 9 times in crystal geodude for an 8-1 record and recently won some gen 4 round steel was in. oh, i beat iconic in upl with it this year.

i hope this hides the team!!

This one is another famous team made in the shoddy days with a long lost dude named creelart. We both split on some differences like lugia and he had a gira o over forretress but the core was the same. While having some horrible matchups (sr leftovers dialga / gira a's / ho ohs), it more often than not will beat very common deoxys a / s offenses. this team was built largely from memory so i added sub whirlwind on lugia only recently as its my favorite lugia and reflect is quite lame. Armaldo was lum but since lead darkrais are non-existant and LO Rays are all the rage now, sash fits better. The only problem with non lum is the trick scarf deoxys s that jibaku uses and people imitate. Wish CM no protect is legit. F hsa. It is 2-0 in upl but i think it lost to someone in crystal geodude.

Armaldo (M) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Battle Armor
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def

The last one for now is a cool team that uses or used some lesser seen pokemon and sets. Skarmory is almost never seen but destroys a lot of teams. Most groudons do not run fire moves anymore, scizors / jirachis are the usual dragon checks now, gira o can usually never touch it in rain or sand with SpD with just Hp fire, lugias, bu dialgas; even deoxys a's as they used like SR / Grass Knot / super power / espeed / shadow ball / spikes. Tyranitars were really uncommon when i made this team and i can only name locopoke as someone whom really used it frequently. It beat deoxys s and non LO Darkrais and dialgas which were all the common leads of the era. Now ttars are quite common, especially the fast variants with sash. A cool ttar that people need to use is sash counter tar used by ciele a lot!! Scarf metagross was really just to take people by surprise and beat SD rays. I thought i had ice punch but i guess i went with earthquake. Trick allows last ditch cm kyogres / bu dialgas / bu palkias (!!) / CM lugias / etc to fail. Now everyone switches out of metagross because scarf is now the norm which is stupid and defeats the purpose of my gimmicks!

Tyranitar (M) @ Lum Berry
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 56 Atk / 192 SpD / 8 Spe

- Earthquake
- Explosion

Skarmory (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Keen Eye
EVs: 252 HP / 200 Def / 56 SpD
Impish Nature

- Whirlwind
- Roost

Latias (F) @ Soul Dew
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 40 SpA / 196 Spe
Timid Nature
- Dragon Pulse
- Calm Mind
- Thunder
- Roost

Giratina (Giratina-Origin) @ Griseous Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 196 HP / 252 Atk / 60 Spe

- Earthquake
- Dragon Claw

Kyogre @ Leftovers
Ability: Drizzle
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Bold Nature
- Surf
- Calm Mind
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Don't use the worms / am teams unless you lead Forretress. His team relied on DP gameplay where no gira os existed so offense never had a spin blocker. If you must, lead with forrey and change blissey's evs!!

Last thing yo, Jolly Sheddy always. Outpacing skizzors for the baton pass is way more important than doing whatever pathetic damage the lil dude can do!

great thread idea & sexy teams dudes :pimp:

i just wanted to nitpick out Iris that on his MANUEL NEUER team Jirachi should be careful>calm nature to do more dmg with iron head, and on the metagross team latias misses out 20 EVs

thanks for sharing with us guys, wish i could contribute too but i haven't played the tier in 2 years and i brought shitty teams to upl :[

oh thanks dude. My B yo. I'd start putting 32 evs on jirachi for all the fast tars now too. So to all building teams now do that!

and i guess just add 20 to attack on latias. Maybe max speed is worth it these days...
