[GHOST] Gym Leader zarator vs. Geodude6

Arena: The Forlorn Graveyard
Restrictions: None

People have stopped burying people in this abandoned graveyard for centuries, but there is still an eerie aura all over the place. The grass looks more grey than green (despite this not affecting Grass-type moves at all), and most Pokemon and people avoid the place instinctively. Some trainers however still visit this place to strengthen the link with their Pokemon, especially Ghost-type ones. A still lake formed in a fissure in the ground, however the dark water makes it impossible to see what lies in its depths

The odd aura of this graveyard has several effects in battle:
  • Focus Blast has 100% accuracy, and the base power of Aura Sphere and Hidden Power is raised by (2). It is very easy to focus oneself's soul in this place.
  • Will-O-Wisp has 100% accuracy. There are always wisps floating around to provide decent enough fodder for this wicked spell.
  • Pain Split has its base energy cost reduced by (2), and all draining attacks are empowered as if the Pokemon were holding Big Root, but without incurring the extra energy cost (this effect doesn't stack with Big Root itself). Life energies are easier to drain and consume in this place.
  • All Pokemon's max HP are reduced to 90. The aura of sorrow which permeates this place withers the strength and the resolve of all the Pokemon battling in its surroundings - even Ghost-types.
  • There are some leftover scrap parts, scattered around the arena. Rotom can tap into them, raising its Special Attack and Special Defense by 1 rank as long as it stays in its original form (without any appliance).

Hi to all the creepers that happen to be hanging out in this spooky graveyard, and welcome to the match between zarator and Geodude6! Geodude6 was recently selected to be the Dark-type gym leader. I don't really think these things help in challenging opposing gyms, but will Geodude's expertise with Dark-types help him beat the Ghost gym? We'll see! Regardless, this is what the challenger will have to face:

zarator's team is about as varied as it could be, but it looks like they all have 2 things in common: a) they're Ghost-type (duh!) and b) they have max movepools (except his Sableye is missing Power-Up Punch but technicalities...). This will definitely not be an easy bunch of Pokemon to overcome!

What has Geodude brought to take on these Ghost-types? Let's see:
Geodude6's Pokemon:

Furialgon [Braviary] (M)
Nature: Adamant (+1 Atk, -1 SpA)
Type:

: Normal STAB; +1 BAP on attacks that match dominant arena type after 3 actions. Unable to have Thrash or Outrage disrupted by oncoming damage.
: Flying STAB; immunity to Ground attacks and the Arena Trap Ability except under the effects of Smack Down and Gravity, even for ground-based flying Pokemon. Will always hit foes with Dig (except other Flying types) and Dive. Cannot be hit by Dive unless the attacking Pokemon has a size class greater than four (4). Unaffected by Spikes or Toxic Spikes. when switching in. Able to hit Pokemon in the evasive stage of Bounce, Fly or Sky Drop with single target moves that hit Pokemon on the field regardless of position.

Abilities:
Keen Eye: (Passive) This Pokemon has extremely good vision and cannot have its accuracy lowered by an opponent through any means (including accuracy lowering attacks, Smogs, Hazes, Fog, etc.). Its vision also enables it to see through any attempts by an opponent to increase their own evasion.
Sheer Force: (Toggle) No default effect. When toggled, this Pokemon can energize all its attacks with a secondary effect (These are damaging moves that either lower the target's stats, raise the user's stats, or inflict a status condition on the target). The Base Attack Power of every move with a secondary effect increases by two (2), but they will never have their usual secondary effect.
Defiant: (Passive) The Pokemon has a deep sense of honour, and whenever one of its stats are decreased by an opponent's Attack or Ability, its Attack increases by two (2) stages. Attack Boosts gained this way are not subject to deterioration that round.

Zuki [Pangoro] (F)
Nature: Quiet (+1 SpA, -15% Spe, -10% Eva)
Type:

: Fighting STAB; ignore weight restrictions on Circle Throw, Seismic Toss, Sky Drop, Storm Throw, Submission, and Vital Throw.
: Dark STAB; ignores Attract and Confusion status entirely when using Dark-type damaging and non-damaging attacks.

Abilities:
Iron Fist: (Passive) The Base Attack Power of this Pokemon's "Punch" attacks is increased by two (2). [Pangoro's attacks affected: Comet Punch, Hammer Arm, Sky Uppercut]
Mold Breaker: (Passive) Whenever this Pokemon attacks, it emits an invisible, blindingly quick pulse preceding the attack that disables the opponents natural abilities. (e.g. Levitators plummet towards the ground before Earthquake hits, etc.) Attacks are still redirected by Lightningrod/Storm Drain, but damage is dealt normally. Status-immunity abilities such as Limber will remove their relevant status at the start of the victim's next action.
Scrappy: (Passive) This Pokemon's Normal and Fighting attacks carry a special signature that can damage Ghosts, even if they have phased out.

Splendid Screen [Aegislash-S] (F)
Nature: Brave (+1 Atk, -15% Spe, -10% Eva)
Type:

: Steel STAB; immune to Sandstorm damage, immune to Poison/Toxic status, but can be corroded specifically by Acid and Acid Spray, making them susceptible to Poison-type attacks and Poison/Toxic Status.
: Ghost STAB; immune to the effects of full trapping moves and the Arena Trap, Magnet Pull, and Shadow Tag abilities. Ghost types can switch out while affected by a partial trapping move, but they will be damaged every action by their effect.

Abilities:
Stance Change: (Passive) This Pokemon changes its stance from Shield Forme to Blade Forme when ordered to use a damaging attack (regardless of that attack's success or failure to execute), and will revert to Shield Forme when using the move King's Shield. Non-damaging attacks will retain the Pokemon's current Forme at the time of use.

Three very interesting choices! This is a fairly well-balanced team all things considered. None of the Pokemon are guaranteed to do well, so it looks like this match will come down to player skill, specifically which player can make the best use of their matchups. It really could go either way!

Well, let's get down to business. I'll flip a coin to determine who sends out first:

RNG Roll (Turn Order) [1 (zarator)|2 (Geodude6)]: 1 (zarator)

zarator sends out first

zarator leads off with Golurk, while Geodude6 sends out Braviary! This is a somewhat neutral matchup, but I think Braviary's sheer power gives it the upper hand.

Braviary immediately starts charging up a powerful move. Golurk gets in a strike before Braviary can finish charging, pummeling it with a Stone Edge! Stone Edge does really good damage to Braviary, but suddenly Braviary unleashes its Sky Attack, which impressively outdamages the Stone Edge. It seems Braviary will be able to win this matchup if both Pokemon just attack with full power.

And it looks like both Pokemon will just continue to exchange blows, as Golurk attacks with Ice Punch, while Braviary continues to use Sky Attack. Braviary is easily outdamage Golurk despite attacking with neutral moves instead of super effective moves. zarator will need to change things up if he wants to win this matchup...

Braviary goes in for a third Sky Attack, nailing Golurk before it even attacks back. But that's because Golurk was charging up for a superpowered Stone Edge+Stone Edge, which nails Braviary for insane amounts of damage! Braviary falls to the ground, knocked out! zarator has managed to seize the lead, but Golurk is now on the cusp of fainting. It won't be able to attack a1 next round, and zarator can't even switch it out! All in all, this match is still quite even.

Geodude recalls the fallen Braviary, and sends out Aegislash! Aegislash is an interesting Pokemon, and many doubt that it's a "good" choice in ASB. It definitely has a lot of versatility when ordering second, but its movepool is somewhat underwhelming and it can probably be taken advantage of when ordering first. Let's see what it can do here!

It looks like Aegislash will be doing some setup, as it firstly creates a Substitute. Since Golurk is so low on HP, that is clearly intended to be helpful against whatever Pokemon zarator sends out next. In fact, Golurk can't even do anything, as it's cooling down from its last attack.

Aegislash then protects itself using its signature move, King's Shield. Golurk, recovered, attempts to strike with Shadow Punch, but the attack fails to bypass Aegislash's shield. In fact, it looks like Golurk's attack was sharply lowered! Geodude could have gone for the KO, but it looks like he's trying to stall out the round with minimal damage and KO Golurk next round instead, so he doesn't have to order first against a fresh opponent. Smart move and it might help him come back from behind.

Again, Aegislash puts up a defense, this time with Reflect. Golurk goes in for another Shadow Punch, but due to the reflective barrier and its lowered attack, it just barely scratches the Substitute. Geodude6 seems to be in a good position here. Aegislash has set up nicely, and will be in a good position against zarator's second Pokemon. As long as he KOes Golurk next round, Aegislash will be able to have the coveted second-order against Golurk's replacement, which is always important, but especially so for Aegislash.
