Spiritomb (Offensive Update) [QC 3/3] [GP 2/2]

name: Offensive Support
move 1: Sucker Punch
move 2: Pursuit
move 3: Will-O-Wisp
move 4: Foul Play / Taunt
ability: Infiltrator
item: Black Glasses / Leftovers
evs: 212 HP / 252 Atk / 44 Spe
nature: Adamant

Moves
========

Sucker Punch is Spiritomb's strongest physical Dark STAB move that uses its Attack stat, and gives it priority to help mitigate its low Speed. Pursuit is an amazing move on Spiritomb, as it lets Spiritomb trap Psychic-types such as Meloetta, which Spiritomb can easily switch in on by virtue of its typing. Will-O-Wisp is a handy move to cripple physical attackers such as Hitmonlee and Rhyperior. Foul Play does good damage to physical attackers such as Hitmonlee, Durant, and Escavalier, and OHKOes +2 Doublade. Taunt is another option for the last slot, as Spiritomb needs it in order to have a chance at Pursuit trapping Cresselia and Calm Mind Reuniclus. It also prevents the likes of Rhyperior and Bronzong from setting up Stealth Rock.

Set Details
========

The EVs make sure that Spiritomb hits as hard as it can and has as much bulk as possible, while outspeeding uninvested Rhyperior. Black Glasses boost the power of Spiritomb's Dark-type attacks, though Leftovers is a nice option on less offensive teams to provide more longevity. Infiltrator allows Spiritomb to burn Substitute boosting Pokemon such as Braviary, Gallade, and Cobalion, as well as SubSeed Pokemon such as Gourgeist-XL behind their Substitutes. Infiltrator also helps if your opponent tries to avoid Sucker Punch with Substitute.

Usage Tips
========

Spiritomb's good bulk and great typing allow it to switch in on Psychic-types, such as Meloetta and Slowking, and proceed to Pursuit trap them. Cresselia can potentially be Pursuit trapped, but Taunt is mandatory to do so. Spiritomb is able to switch into Hitmonlee rather easily and can do a nice chunk back with Foul Play or burn it with Will-O-Wisp. Spiritomb's natural bulk and typing allow it to be a great spinblocker. Should your opponent have a Pokemon that resists Dark-type moves, such as Cobalion, Drapion, or Aromatisse, using Will-O-Wisp is never a bad play since burning Pokemon such as Cobalion and Drapion is always helpful, and Aromatisse doesn't enjoy having to waste a turn to use Aromatherapy. Spiritomb can't do much to Aromatisse anyway.

Team Options
========

Aromatisse is a big threat to Spiritomb, so Poison-types such as Weezing, Roselia, and Amoonguss or Steel-types such as Escavalier make good teammates. Hone Claws Durant gets a special mention for being able to turn Aromatisse into a liability for teams by setting up on it. Hazard leads such as Cobalion, Accelgor, and Omastar appreciate Spiritomb's ability to spinblock on offensive teams. Life Orb Moltres also handles this set rather well, taking less than half from a Sucker Punch and being able to Roost off damage. As such, bulky Pokemon such as Slowking or Cresselia or fast Pokemon such as Jolteon, Sharpedo, and Heliolisk make for good teammates, as they can all take Moltres on. In return, Heliolisk and Sharpedo enjoy Spiritomb's ability to switch in to Hitmonlee. Pokemon that love Pursuit support and Doublade being dealt with make good teammates. Moltres, Delphox, and Sigilyph appreciate Psychic-types being trapped,and Swords Dance Cobalion loves Slowking and Doublade gone. The aforementioned Durant also appreciates Spiritomb's ability to deal with Doublade. In return, Cobalion can deal with Aromatisse with their Steel-type STAB moves. Choice Scarf Moltres gets a special mention, as it can U-turn on a Slowking switch-in for Spiritomb to Pursuit trap it.

this is mostly fine imo, but I'd slash leftovers with black glasses, since the longevity increase is sort of noticeable, and can be helpful in some situations (if you're using Spiritomb in less offensive teams for example). mention more things you can punish through foul play besides doublade (most physical attackers actually, hitmonlee takes a solid 66% min damage for example etc), how infiltrator gives you such a big edge in sucker punch prediction wars against things with substitute. also, there's a line that's really bugging me, although it's probably just me being picky:

  • Poison types like drapion or steel types like escavalier can remove aromatisse for Spiritomb
i think that drapion and spiritomb sort of overlap a bit, as their primary role is usually as a psychic-type check (or drapion can be a Swords Dance sweeper/lure, but Aromatisse chunks that for quite some damage on the switch, doing 46%-54%). id probably mention more solid aromatisse checks. lickilicky shouldn't be the main cleric getting mentioned also, due to being irrelevant for the most part (it does have a niche, but I'd rather use aromatisse, mola or even audino).

onto the most important part: why is there no mention of spiritomb + moltres or anything else that benefits from pursuit trapping? that's hugeeeee and the reason that got me into Spiritomb at first.

I think this is all though.

Cobalion DEFINITELY needs a mention in team options imo. SD Cobal is one of the best Pokemon to take advantage of all the Aromatisse running around, and Spiritomb matches up incredibly well against two of Cobalion's most common counters: Doublade and Slowking. Slowking is even vulnerable to being trapped by Spiritomb's Pursuit, eliminating it for the entire game! The same can be said for Durant, another Pokemon who takes advantage of Aromatisse and absolutely hates Doublade.

Otherwise this looks pretty solid

EDIT: Speaking of Cobalion, you should mention in usage tips that simply throwing out a Will-O-Wisp when the opponent has a solid resistance to Dark-type moves is always a good play, burning things that can take Spiritomb's attacks with ease such as Cobalion and Drapion on the switch is always incredibly useful, and even Aromatisse doesn't enjoy having to waste a turn to Aromatherapy.

Not QC but i have used this set for a lot of time now and i can help.
Delphox should be added in partners as it is as crippled by Slowking as Moltres is (and dislikes meloetta).
I also think that entry hazards setters in general (Cobalion, Omastar, Accelgor even) should be in team options too as Spiritomb is like the second best spinblocker for offensive teams anyway.
I'd also expand a bit on Taunt in moves on how Spiritomb /needs/ it not to be setup on by Reuniclus and Cresselia and to prevent Stealth Rock from Rhyperior, Bronzong, etc.
Destiny bond destroys aromatisse if used at the right moment and can take out almost anything slower than rhyperior

Just a couple of things

- Hard to Pursuit trap Cresselia without Taunt. If Tomb lacks Taunt, Cress just sets up to +6 at free will thanks to Moonblast. Stress you need Taunt to even have a chance of trapping Cress. Otherwise, her bulk is just too much.
- Make special mention of Choice Scarf Moltres, which can U-turn out of Psychic-types as they come in and go to Spiritomb for the easy Pursuit trap.
- Moltres doesn't exactly care about the moves on this set (takes <50% from Sucker Punch and has Roost to avoid it while taking a pittance from everything else) so packing Slowking or Cress to take hits from it or fast mons like Jolteon, Sharpedo, and Heliolisk can easily pick off Tres after a Sucker Punch. (the latter two especially like having Tomb to deal with Hitmonlee's revenge killing attempts)

Looks solid otherwise, so

I really don't like your usage tips explanation of tossing out a WoW if a dark resist is coming in. The former two would be very WoW-worthy even if they didn't resist Dark-type attacks, and you WoW aromatisse because you have nothing else to do to it-Aromatisse is not a terrible example for this reason, but I do feel it's a bit different than, say, some special attacker that still takes decent damage from Foul Play and can't recover it off. If we talked about, say, another special attacker that resists Dark-type moves(are there even any? Maybe CM Cobal or SpA sharpedo), is it really preferable to throw out Will-O-Wisp? If so, please mention that as well.

Comments:

I'm sure it DOES do good damage to hitmonlee, but isn't there an example of something that's not resistant to it, but also strong and relevant, that you can mention?

You outspeed Zero speed Rhyperior; Minimum Speed usually means 4 Speed Evs, which is speed creep and you don't outspeed that anyhow.

You can still trap Trick Room Reuniclus without Taunt. Also, doesn't Cresselia just Moonblast you in the face? Maybe the defensive set can be pursuit trapped, then again you have real trouble actually hurting it so it might just T-wave then Ice Beam+Moonlight for a while.

Infiltrator also lets you burn SubSeed Pokemon, and take on various other Sub boosters.

I feel like the way you talk about WoW'ing Aromatisse is a bit off. Certainly it doesn't enjoy wasting that turn, but the key reason you're WoWing it is because you have nothing else to do to it, so I feel that deserves a bit more of a mention.

Maybe talk about how it spinblocks against everything besides Hitmonlee? Espc. vis a vis WoW.

Top anti Aromatisse teammate is honestly Doublade, though it is another ghost. Doesn't take moonblast that great, but SDs on it; this goes for HC durant too. Maybe mention SD escav? The key here is, it's nice to have something that sets up on Aroma and makes it a legitimate liability, rather than something that just kind of forces it out while dying slowly. Any competent stall team should be able to wall that stuff anyhow.

You wanna say WHY those mons are good? Or just say they're good teammates "as such"? because that doesn't actually state that's what its for.

Alright, I implemented most of the above. I'm new to this n_n

I'm sure it DOES do good damage to hitmonlee, but isn't there an example of something that's not resistant to it, but also strong and relevant, that you can mention?
I mentioned Escavalier and Durant, both of which are 2HKOed by Foul Play.

Infiltrator also lets you burn SubSeed Pokemon, and take on various other Sub boosters.
I had Substitute + Bulk Up Braviary and Gallade mentioned, but I did add a mention of Gourgeist in terms of SubSeed Pokemon.

Maybe talk about how it spinblocks against everything besides Hitmonlee? Espc. vis a vis WoW.
Spiritomb can actually spinblock Hitmonlee - Spiritomb is 3HKOed by Knock Off while Hitmonlee is 2HKOed by Foul Play, and is even taken care of by Sucker Punch after one Foul Play depending on damage rolls.
