Arena
Nowhere in Particular
The hot stench of the metropolis suffocates all newcomers. The streets bustle with activity: businessmen scurry, children yell, and the homeless beg. The hustle-and-bustle city is tireless; it is clockwork. Everyone lives within their own microcosm, content to keep their head down and live another day.

Rather, most are content. There are those who know how to escape. They yearn for something greater, something primal. They gather at a pub down by Main Street and 10th called The Antidote. No, they're not there for the tempting booze or the allure of getting laid. They come to fight. A man with a missing eye and ripping biceps guards the back doorway which presumably leads to the basement. He spits on the ground and address you firmly.

"Oi, where you off to?" he grumbles.

"Nowhere in Particular," you reply candidly.

The man gives a knowing nod and steps out of the way. It worked!

Down and down the concrete stairs go. They lead you into a cavernous underground room. The basement: Nowhere in Particular. Its floor is cold pavement and its brick walls are unforgiving. Metal folding chairs, wobbly card tables, and other materials litter the room. But none of that matters; what catches your eye is the middle of the room. Underneath the flickering fluorescent lights is a battle. A formidable Fighting-type Pokemon slams an unsuspecting foe into the floor with a deafening thud. Its trainer sticks a fist pump of pride into the cool air, as the basement reverberates back to silence.

"Nice fight," calls a blond-haired figure with green pants, sitting backwards in a chair. "But I believe our training is over... We have a visitor."

They both turn towards you. A lithe young woman with short pink hair grunts and stamps her foot into the ground. "LET'S DO THIS."

The blond makes a motion to stop her. "Easy there, Maylene." He approaches you and offers a firm handshake. "Hi there, I'm Birkal!" he says, brimming with enthusiasm. "Welcome to Nowhere in Particular. Or more formally, welcome to Fight Gym. Let me give you a quick rundown on the rules here."

"Number One: The entire gym fight is played as a series of one versus one matches. It is a best of series, meaning that whoever wins the majority of the rounds wins the match. One a Pokemon has fought its round, it remains benched for the rest of the series. The arena is cleared anew after every match; hazards and field effects disappear."

"Number Two: The Gym Leader sends out the first Pokemon of the match. From there, the loser of each round sends out first in the following matches."

"Number Three: Both Challenger and Gym Leader may only bring one of each typing. For example, Avalugg would take up the Challenger's Ice-type slot. Similarly, Noivern would take up the Challenger's Flying-type and Dragon-type slots for the series. Fighting-type is exempt from this rule for the Gym Leader alone. However, the Gym Leader cannot bring two of the same typed Pokemon outside of Fighting-types (e.g. Gallade and Medicham cannot both be brought).

"Think you can handle all that?" Birkal asks with a smile. "Let me know if you have any questions."

"UGH, SHUT UP," Maylene shouts angrily. A small crowd emerges from the shadows; their interest is piqued. "ENOUGH CHAT. LET'S GET THIS FIGHT STARTED."

Summarized:
1) Best of Series (1 vs. 1).
2) Gym Leader sends out first match; loser sends out first afterwards.
3) Can only bring one of any single type to the fight.

Leader Birkal

Aikido Lucario (M)
Practice primarily in Japan, Aikido is the combination of martial arts with philosophical beliefs. The form creates shifts in momentum to stop incoming assaults. Those who have perfected this art are said to have a harmonious spirit. Lucario learned its name by taking out Gerard's Mega Gardevoir and severely hampering his Aurumoth in the Best of Best Tournament: Round 1. ▶

Fresh off a rethink of arena we walk into a brand new Fight Gym with a very strong challenger. Not that the previous arena was totally terrible but this new one does the best job of potentially any gym in preventing counterteaming. Whether I agree completely with the fairness of the arena is not to be stated. Gerard has still done his best to bring a powerful team with as much SE STAB on fighting as the arena allows him to pack in and even the others bring strong types to resist the Gym's main offence. Match ups are going to be crucial in this place and the first battle could be pivotal in deciding the momentum of the rest of the match. Lets see how Birkal leads us off then..

This seems like a clear battle for you to be in. I'm thinking Expert Belt will be the item for you this day, it may seem like an odd choice but I'm confident it will be the right one. Seeing we wouldn't be able to cash on the power of Black Sludge in here. Let's see what you our foe can do. Ruby is dying for some chicken.

Well here we go. After a slight delay the combatants in this here Fighting Gym get right down to the business at hand... fighting! Gerard finds himself with the double edged sword of getting to choose his match up but having to order first as a result and looks to sure up his chances by having Ruby the unseemingly fast Tentacruel set up a Reflect to hide behind. Safe in the knowledge that most of even Mega Blaziken's offence is on the physical side. Unforunately Capoeira just completely shrugs off the idea of that screen doing a god damned thing and boosts her damage to boot with a timely Focus Energy. Both mons then spend the rest of the round trading their best blows. All the while Maylene yells a heck of a lot and does her best to distract me. In fact even Blaziken's somewhat strange nature choice comes in handy when she is able to tank repeated bursts of Muddy Water from the Tentacruel without taking obscene amounts of damage and win the race by firing off a one-two combo of Earthquake and Thunder Punch, taking full advantage of Ruby's bounty of weaknesses. Momentum is critically (get it, critically!) important in this gym and those boosts on Capoeira's next three attacks might be crucial in securing the leader that crucial first points in this revamped Fight Gym. Mind you Gerard is by no means a mile behind and anything could happen from here.

Gerard is in an unenviable position. With the Switch=KO mechanic giving Birkal the easiest possible way around Endure and having lost the set up battle last round he has to revert to stall. Ruby is able to tank a Thunder Punch while setting up some replenishment on herself with an Aqua Ring. She then has to Protect against the incoming Earthquake to allow Aqua Ring to do its thing. This lets her live the second Earthquake but only barely. She then finally hits back with another spout of Muddy Water but relying on an accuracy drop (which honestly may not have helped anyway) instead of just dealing more damage might not have been the best idea in the world. Ruby is hanging on by but a thread and Capoeira is moving in for the kill. Also did I mention the Blaziken is now absolutely ridiculously fast? Well it is.

Well Birkal thought he had it all figured out. Knowing full well that Ruby was set to Endure he had Capoeira do it too. Plan A was then to tank a Muddy Water while removing the Tentacruel's Endure with a little Roar knowing that her own was still safely there to take another hit. Of course that was until Gerarg finally got that Accuracy drop he's been aiming for this entire match-up. Somehow this prompts Capoeira to miss completely with an Earthquake (seriously explain to me how an Earthquake misses??) but at least the leader's plan had a bit of a fail safe in it when Endure makes sure Ruby's Brine can't secure a first match victory for the challenger. Unfortunately though the HP tables have turned. Birkal is now hanging by a thread and Aqua Ring sees Ruby now at a much healthier state. Of course it isn't totally safe as a bevy of attacks from the mega chicken can still KO her but its time to see if Gerard can better take advantage of now ordering second. Watch closely Pokefans, this one is going to end next round one way or the other.

And it does indeed turn out that acting second is the key. Wary of the accuracy drop the leader has his Mega Blaziken use an ever reliable Aerial Ace so a hit can be totally assured. Of course he didn't exactly account for that silly Gen I movepool and Ruby is able to barely survive thanks to the defence boost afforded by lowering her head. She then completely overkills Capoeira with said Skull Bash to earn a very hard fought initial victory for our challenger! I can only hope all the match ups are this exciting.

Having to play it coy once again sending out first the leader thinks it best to simply chuck out a Legandary. Not a bad plan at all really but Birkal may find that Keldeo's relatively shallow movepool might be a bit of a handicap. Indeed Gerard sees this possible flaw and sends out Elphaba the Mismagius safe in the knowledge that she faces absolutely no super effective coverage. Unfortunately for the little musketeer it does not sit so safely. The ghostly opponent leads off with a powerful Thunder which immediately cripples Keldeo with paralysis. After wincing for a moment the Water type responds with the one STAB it can actually hit with as it swings an Aqua Tail to make the most of the physical advantage it has over the somewhat frail Mismagius. The round sort of continues like that, with Gerard and Elphaba throwing out electric attacks and Keldeo just simply responding time and time again with watery tails. At least it was able to act every action despite the paralysis. But it now hangs over Birkal's head while ordering first, so that might be a tiny issue.

Possibly resigned to the fact Keldeo was a pretty terribly choice Birkal all but admits defeat in this match up, not even bothering with substitutions. Between this and the absurd power of Gen VI Hex Mismagius makes short work and secures Gerard a strong 2-0 lead. Even throwing a crit in there for good measure.

The leader faces a definite uphill battle from here on out and we haven't even gotten to the members of Gerard's squad with SE STAB over Fighting yet.
