Yanma [QC 1/3]

Yanma

Overview
########

+Outspeeds the entire unboosted tier with Speed Boost
+STAB moves hit many fast and frail Pokémon

-Frail defences
-Many weaknesses, including a 4x weakness to Stealth Rock
-Lack of boosting moves means Yanma cannot get past most bulky Pokemon
-Heavily reliant on OHKOing opponents before they can strike back
-Requires a lot of support to be effective

Life Orb
########
name: Life Orb
move 1: Bug Buzz
move 2: Air Slash
move 3: Giga Drain
move 4: Protect
ability: Speed Boost
item: Life Orb
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
nature: Modest

Moves
========

  • Air Slash is a STAB move that hits Pokemon that don’t resist it for solid damage. Can cause flinching, but can't be relied on to do so.
  • Bug Buzz is a STAB move that hits Pokemon that don’t resist it for solid damage. It can also hit through Substitutes in the event they attempt to set up through Yanma's Protect.
  • Giga Drain offers coverage, hitting many Pokemon for good damage and some that would otherwise be capable of switching into Yanma’s STAB's and fire back with OHKO moves. It also increases Yanma's longevity by helping to deal with Life Orb recoil.
  • Protect can be used to guarantee you outspeed the whole unboosted tier, and to scout moves during sweeps.

Set Details
========

  • A Modest natured 252 Special Attack EV Yanma takes advantage of a decent base 75 SpA, allowing it to dent the majority of the tier with powerful stabs in the form of Air Slash and Bug Buzz. Modest is important for Yanma's special attack power, as Speed Boost handles Yanma's speed allowing it to go first in the majority of cases.
  • 252 EVs in speed allow Yanma to reach a speed of 289, outspeeding the majority of sweepers in the tier. After one Speed Boost this hits 433, outspeeding Accelgor and making it the second fastest Pokémon in the tier after Ninjask.
  • The remaining 4 EVs go into defence rather than HP, because it would make Yanma's HP divisible by 2, only allowing 2 Stealth Rock switch-ins at most even without LO recoil.
  • Life Orb is the item of choice for a Modest Yanma, as it requires a versatile moveset while still having boosted power moves.
  • Speed Boost is Yanma's niche ability, and the sole reason for using Yanma in the first place.

Usage Tips
========

  • Only put Yanma in as a free switch in, as its frail defenses mean that it is unlikely to survive multiple blows.
  • Stealth Rocks cripple Yanma meaning a rock-free field is necessary.
  • Yanma is best used as a late game sweeper where it can pick off a weakened offensive team, assuming powerful priority users have been eliminated. It is also possible to use Yanma as an early game attacker, where it can heavily dent or even KO offensive sweepers, before you bring in a setup sweeper, or Late game sweeper.

Team Options
========

  • Yanma appreciates spinners that can keep the field clear of Rocks. These include Cryogonal and Sandslash, and even Kabutops. Cryogonal can come in on special ice and electric moves that would KO Yanma. Kabutops can come in on fire moves aimed at Yanma, and proceed to threaten Fire-Types with Aqua Jet. Sandslash can also take electric moves aimed at Yanma including the crippling Thunder Wave, giving it a free switch in.
  • Defensive Xatu synergises well with Yanma, as if Yanma is up against a Stealth Rock user it can't OHKO, Xatu can switch in and bounce the rocks back as well as being able to U-turn out to maintain momentum. It also returns all status moves that Yanma lures, like Thunder Wave.
  • Thick Fat users like Grumpig and Miltank can also come in on Fire and Ice moves that Yanma lures. They are both capable of using Heal Bell to remove crippling statuses, or absorb status moves themselves. Sandslash can take physical rock moves that Grumpig and Miltank’s defences would otherwise prefer not to.
  • Yanma's main job is to threaten offensive sweepers, which Bulkier/Slower sweepers on your team would appreciate. Examples include Feraligatr, Golurk and Granbull.
  • Works well with wallbreakers such as Magmortar which can switch into fire moves and hit back extremely hard.

Other Options
########

  • HP Ground has a honorable mention here for use against physically defensive Steelix, where it would have a 96.9% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery.
  • Yanma's access to Substitute can allow it to shrug of incoming status moves from non-Prankster Pokemon and status back with a Toxic, without fear of being KOed. However, Substitute costs Yanma a significant amount of health that it often cannot afford to lose, and is very easily broken.
  • Yanma has access to Tailwind which can be used as a final effort to help the team before Yanma faints. This tends to be a sacrificial move, as Yanma is extremely unlikely to pull it off without being KOed. It is useful for slower sweepers on your team that require some setup. There are better users of Tailwind, such as Prankster Murkrow, which guarantees it, even through priority moves, and other Pokemon such as bulky Altaria which can safely set it up and survive handily.
  • Access to U-Turn can allow it to switch in counters, but is best left to other users of the move, as Yanma's physical attack is lackluster and will not be doing any significant damage.
  • Hypnosis is a useful option for Yanma, either to shut down a switch in, or purely to outspeed a counter with Protect+Speed Boost and shut them down safely. It is also useful against Pokemon that normally wall Yanma's moves, allowing free turns to rack up extra damage or to get a KO that would normally be out of reach. This also allows you to safely switch in another Pokemon if desired.

Checks & Counters
########

**Bulky Pokemon**: Anything that Yanma cannot 2HKO on the switch threatens it. Yanma is unable to beat most bulky Pokemon, and due to its frailty, these walls can even 2HKO or OHKO back.

**Priority Moves**: Priority users can check Yanma, though none in the tier is capable of OHKOing unboosted without prior damage dealt to Yanma. Best checks include Sucker Punch Pawniard and Kangaskhan as well as Quick Attack Toxic Boost Zangoose which can all tank a hit from relatively high health if not able to OHKO with priority. They are likely also able to force Yanma out entirely. Aqua Jet users like Feraligatr and Kabutops can check, but need to be careful of Giga Drain if they fail to KO.

**Stealth Rocks**: Stealth Rock is pretty much a hard counter as Yanma can only switch in once to it, and most probably will die from 50% health against unresisted attacks afterwards.

**Choice Scarf Users**: Choice Scarfers can potentially check Yanma, but Yanma's use of Protect in conjunction with Speed Boost makes them less than surefire checks, particularly if Yanma already has one speed boost up.

Honestly, Tailwind and phazing support are not necessary. Phazing support is better used on bulkier Pokemon like Rhydon that can take multiple hits Remove Dusknoir from Checks and Counters, Dusknoir is a really bad Pokemon that gets worn down fast, has little offensive presence, and cannot wall the Pokemon it is supposed to wall, such as Sawk, because of its horrid HP stat and its vulnerability to Knock Off. If anything, mention a viable wall like Audino.

252+ SpA Life Orb Yanma Bug Buzz vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Audino: 117-138 (28.5 - 33.6%) -- 0.4% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Audino Double-Edge vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Yanma: 160-189 (59 - 69.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
(Audino can make do with the recoil from Double-Edge, by the way)

Alright, so this needs a LOT of work.

Overview
------------
+Outspeeds everything in the tier bar Ninjask after one Speed Boost
+Dents a lot of the tier with powerful STAB moves
+Tailwind Support
+Can Phaze with Whirlwind or throw out crippling Toxics against bulky walls.

-Frail defences
-Extreme weakness to Stealth Rocks with the Bug/Flying dual-typing
-Completely walled by Muk and Dusknoir
- Outspeeds the entire unboosted tier (even Ninjask doesn't run speed investment)
- Say that its STAB moves hit many fast frail Pokemon
- Remove Tailwind and phasing mentions
- Remove mention of Muk and Noir
- Say that Yanma's lack of a boosting move means it cannot get past most bulky Pokemon, and relies heavily on KOing opponents before they can strike back

Life Orb
----------
Move 1: Air Slash
Move 2: Bug Buzz
Move 3: Giga Drain
Move 4: Roost/Protect
Ability: Speed Boost
Item: Life Orb
EV Spread: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Nature: Modest
- Bug Buzz should be before Air Slash, since Bug Buzz tends to be Yanma's main attack. You can even make a not of its ability to hit Pokemon behind Substitute, in the event they set it up while Yanma Protects.
- Remove Roost; it almost never finds the time to use it, and Protect is absolutely essential to buy a free turn to allow Yanma to revenge opponents. Protect also blocks Fake Out.

Set Details
--------------
  • A Modest natured 252 Special Attack EV Yanma takes advantage of a decent base 75 SpA, allowing it to dent the majority of the tier with powerful stabs in the form of Air Slash and Bug Buzz.
  • 252 EV’s in speed allow Yanma to reach a speed of 289, outspeeding the majority of sweepers in the tier. After one Speed Boost, this hits 433, outspeeding Accelgor and making it the second fastest Pokémon in the tier after Ninjask.
  • Life Orb is the item of choice for a Modest Yanma, as it requires a versatile moveset while still having boosted power moves. Choice Specs variants are useless due to the fact that all of its major STAB moves have many resistances.
  • Speed Boost is required, since no other ability does anything for you.
- Emphasize that the power of Modest is crucial for Yanma, as Speed Boost handles its Speed
- Remove the point about Choice Specs; being unable to switch moves or more importantly, use Protect, severely hampers Yanma
- It's not so much that other abilities don't help Yanma much, it's more because Speed Boost is its niche, aka the whole reason to even use Yanma.

Usage Tips
--------------
  • Only put Yanma in as a free switch in, as its frail defenses mean that it is unlikely to survive multiple blows.
  • Stealth Rocks cripple Yanma meaning a rock-free field is necessary. Avoid Thunder Waves for the same reason.
  • Yanma can ruin a Rain Team’s day, with one Speed Boost allowing it to outrun many Swift Swim users in rain other than the likes of Floatzel, and cripple them with Giga Drain.
- Yanma cannot outspeed any Swift Swimmer outside of Carracosta after a single Speed Boost (since Rain sweepers havce a +2 boost). Instead mention that Yanma can pick off a weakened offensive team, provided powerful priority users are rid of.

Teammates
---------------
  • Yanma appreciates spinners that can keep the field clear of Rocks. These include Cryogonal and Sandslash. Xatu gets a mention with Magic Bounce, and its TWave support can stop Yanma taking damage from things it can’t OHKO.
  • Thick Fat users like Grumpig and Miltank can also come in on Fire and Ice moves that Yanma lures. They are both capable of using Heal Bell to remove crippling effects like Poison and Paralysis. Sandslash can take physical rock moves that Grumpig and Miltank’s defences would otherwise not like to do.
  • Pokémon like Audino can use Wish to increase Yanma’s longevity, though it’s better spared for Setup Sweepers.
  • General setup sweepers like Feraligatr and Kabutops or all out attackers like Floatzel appreciate Yanma’s ability to heavily dent walls that they may otherwise fail to OHKO.
- You can mention Kabutops as another spinner. You could also mention the defensive benefits the spinners provide for Yanma: Cryo switches into Ice moves and special Electric moves, Kabutops can switch into Fire attacks, while Sandslash takes Rock and Electric moves for Yanma. Also, you could just say 'defensive Xatu' to avoid unecessary confusion. Xatu's Thunder Wave seems too inconsistent to be considered a form of support, maybe mention its access to U-turn to bring Yanma in safely?
- Just say that Heal Bell cures status off Yanma in general: it's not like Poison is any more an annoyance to Yanma than burn. You could also mention they can absorb Thunder Waves aimed at Yanma, since Yanma detests paralysis.
- Yanma is too frail to make use of Wish, and at the very least can sustain itself with Giga Drain. Remove this point.
- Yanma does not do a good job of denting walls, its main purpose is to threaten offensive sweepers, which bulkier/slower attackers appreciate. Bulkier attackers or wallbreakers should be mentioned as good Yanma teammates for this reason.

Tailwind Support/Phazing Support Set(If considered Viable to you guys?)

*Adding Soon*
Nope.

Checks and Counters
-------------------------

  • Countered by Assault Vest Muk which can take all of Yanma’s moves with impunity and OHKO back.
  • Checked/Countered by Dusknoir that can take multiple Air Slashes, and likely OHKO back with a Fire Punch after Life Orb Recoil.
  • Priority users ‘can’ check Yanma, though none in the tier is capable of OHKO’ing unboosted without prior damage dealt to Yanma. Best checks include Sucker Punch Guts Raticate and Quick Attack Toxic Boost Zangoose which can both tank a hit from relatively high health if not able to OHKO with priority. They are likely able to force Yanma out.
  • Stealth Rock is pretty much a hard counter as Yanma can only switch in once to it, and most probably will die from 50% health against unresisted attacks afterwards.
  • Choice Scarf users can force Yanma to switch if it hasn't got a speed boost up. Roost Variants cannot stay in versus Scarfed users like Rotom and Swellow.
- Don't be so specific when mentioning bulky Pokemon that wall Yanma, because lots of Pokemon can do just that, such as Audino, Dragalge, Mantine, Lanturn, Muk (don't need to mention Assault Vest), Probopass, Klinklang, Rotom, Cryogonal, Steelix, Piloswine, etc... To be honest, almost anything that Yanma does not OHKO, or 2HKO on the switch, can easily cripple Yanma, since it is so frail and vulnerable to status. Just mention that anything that can take hits from Yanma can easily stop it.
- Remove Raticate as a Sucker Punch user and replace with Pawniard and Kangaskhan. Mention Kabutops and Feraligatr, and that they have to be wary about Giga Drain if Aqua Jet fails to KO.
- Remove the point about Roost when mentioning Scarfers, Roost does absolutely nothing to stop them. Remove Swellow since it is virtually never a Scarfer. Do mention that Protect allows Yanma to outspeed Choice Scarfers if it already has +1 Speed from Speed Boost, which makes them less than surefire checks.

You really need to fix the formatting on this analysis. Use this thread here and fix it so that it matches that (obvs still in bullet points tho :]).

Also u need to fill in the Other Options section.

Fixed with suggestions made. Thanks to Punchshroom and Alfalfa.
Fixed Formatting to match correctly. Thanks for the link gamer boy.

Added Tailwind and Phazing possibility to Other Options. Mentioned that other Pokés perform either job better, and is gimmicky anyway. Still may throw people for a loop if they expect the standard LifeOrb set.
Small mention of Toxic, because that's a useful status Yanma can lay down, and U-Turn as a scout Yanma in conjunction with SpeedBoost+Protect. Added Substitute as an option to absorb status moves, if not using Protect.
Moved Roost to Other Options, as a possibility in place of Protect - too gimmicky and situational to use over Protect in the main set/only really viable set.
Moved HP Ground to other options as main set has no wiggle room for other moves without sacrificing a lot of Yanma's ability to hit the majority of the tier at least neutrally.

Let me know if there's any further changes I need to make. Added QC tag, assuming no further changes need to be made to the skeleton.

Giga Drain also helps Yanma deal with Life Orb recoil. Protect does nothing to stop Thunder Wave, it merely delays it.

Best to avoid taking anything, really.

Sandslash can also take electric moves aimed at Yanma including the crippling Thunder Wave, giving it a free switch in.
I don't get what that point is supposed to mean in context, it feels like it is unnecessary and doesn't need to be said. You could say it can proceed to threaten the Fire-types with Aqua Jet.

Other Options
########

  • HP Ground has a honorable mention here for use against physically defensive Steelix, where it would have a 96.9% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery.
  • Yanma gets access to Tailwind, but is nowhere near the best user of it in the tier.
  • Yanma can phaze with whirlwind, and in conjunction with Protect and Speed Boost, can be an annoying phazer, but is still outclassed by bulkier phazers like Rhydon and shut down by Prankster Taunt.
  • Yanma's access to Substitute can allow it to shrug of incoming status moves from non-Prankster Pokemon and status back with a Toxic, without fear of being KOed.
  • Access to U-Turn can allow it to switch in counters, but is best left to other users of the move.
  • Roost can be used over Protect to heal Life Orb recoil, but Protect is favoured as opposing Pokemon may simply OHKO Yanma if they're faster before a boost.
You'll need to specify what makes Yanma an inferior user of these moves to consider "leaving them to other Pokemon". Remove Whirlwind and Roost, Yanma cannot afford to let the opponent hit it directly whatsoever to justify using these. Tailwind can stay since Yanma's Speed Boost allows it to use it as a last-ditch/sacrifice attack, speeding up its teammates to finish the job, but it costs a moveslot. U-turn isn't terrible since it can soften up foes and nab momentum, but Yanma is too weak to weaken opponents with it. Mention that Substitute costs significant health, and is very easily broken.

Checks & Counters

I think Roost can stay simply because of how attractive it sounds, but be sure to mention in that Yanma rarely has time for it and it's mostly a waste. I'd rather it get mentioned and downplayed rather than not get any negativity.

In addition to Punchshroom's changes:

add Hypnosis to OO because it's cool, but not worth the moveslot usually

Also, you can remove Tailwind from OO too. I see no reason to use it when you're constantly boosting your Speed already.

Changes made.

Kept Roost in OO, but not sure if you two will disagree over that. I thought it was worth a mention when I first wrote it so... If it still needs more 'downplaying' versus other options I can do that. It's a partially viable option still, especially if your opponent expects Protect and decides not to waste PP with an attack, etcetera.

Removed Tailwind, but can add back in later if wanted. Better users included Bulky Altaria which can safely set it up, and Prankster Murkrow guarantees it. (Tailwind doesn't help Yanma personally, true, but as Punchshroom said, it is a last ditch effort to help your team.) Tailwind is damn useful if you have a slow sweeper too. Yanma can at least do something useful before it faints. (Imagine bringing in a setup sweeper on something that cant hurt it, with a tailwind up. Brrr.)

Added the extremely gimmicky hypnosis to OO. Compound Eyes, Timid Yanma is the only real option with that. (Personally I think no one will ever use it - but it does sound fun. In any case, it's outclassed by Sleep Powder Butterfree for that kind of thing.)

Altered the Checks and Counters section. Split it into Bulky Walls, Priority Users, Stealth Rocks(since spikes don't hit, I didn't call it Hazards.) and Choice Scarfers. Not sure what you'd call a check that if Yanma can't 2HKO, it gets demolished? Left it as a Bulky Wall thing, they usually are anyway.

Thanks to scorpdestroyer and Punchshroom.

Atractive as far as sacrifing precious coverage (unlike Archeops), and the fact that it has Giga Drain to help compensate for LO damage while still threatening opponents. If Roost does stay in OO...

Also, you can remove Tailwind from OO too. I see no reason to use it when you're constantly boosting your Speed already.
Tailwind can stay too. Tailwind is not for Yanma itself, rather using it as a last-ditch attack just when Yanma is about to be KOed, so that its teammates get the full benefit of +2 Speed for 3 turns. Thanks to Speed Boost, Yanma will most likely be fast enough to pull this off, which warrants some merit.

furaiz Don't mention Compound Eyes or Tinted Lens, because again, why use Yanma without Speed Boost?

You can expand the Bulky Walls thing into Bulky Pokemon in general: Pokes such as Bouffalant, Rotom, and Klinklang aren't walls but they can easily keep Yanma in check by taking a hit and retaliating for big damage.

Changes made.

Kept Roost for now, mentioned Giga Drain versus Roost option. Again, it's an option some people will consider, despite there being better options. Again, probably need someone to 'cast a deciding vote' as it were.

Re-added Tailwind - included Prankster Murkrow as a better user and Bulky Altaria. Was unsure whether to mention something like Articuno, or whether just Prankster Murkrow would be enough.(Besides, quite a few pokes can use it, like Archeops, Articuno, Drifblim etc.) Either way, it doesn't detract from it's usability. I felt that discussing the various other Tailwind users would probably draw attention away from Yanma itself, since it is Yanma's analysis. Keeping it small was the idea in my head, and limiting it slightly to Yanma's use of it, while mentioning one or two pokes that could do it better.

Removed Hypnosis because it can't be used without Compound Eyes, due to its terrible accuracy. Seeing as you said not to mention Compound Eyes, it wasn't worth keeping. It is another option(barely), but a terrible+hilarious one anyway.

Expanded Bulky Walls into Bulky Pokemon: Didn't mention Pokemon by name, since there are so many anyway. *Can't believe I didn't make that link between the overview and C&C.*

Again, thanks to Punchshroom. And scorpdestroyer. Can you guys reach an agreement on Roost? As it is, I'm not sure whether I should keep roost, mainly because of Punch's dislike of it.
I strongly agree with Punch on Tailwind though, despite it being a suicide play.

P.S: About that Hypnosis Compound Eyes thing: It was generally used back in the day to sometimes outspeed some lead Pokémon like Uxie(Base 95) and Mesprit(Base 80) and put them to sleep. Not sure if that's something that's worth doing now, but there we have it. Very limited use though, it depends on what a person commonly runs into. Not 100% sure that current Uxies run max speed, but I believe they run enough to guarantee they outspeed Mesprit.

Edit: Finally figured out the tagging thing lmao.

I have a dislike for Roost but that's because you already have Giga Drain, I feel it deserves to be slashed with Protect(meaning that I never use Roost) or put in OO. I used both Eviolite Yanma and Lefties Yanma and I enjoy them more than Roost.

Roost is in OO. Yanma has a plethora of weaknesses, and even with Eviolite, will likely be OHKOed by super effective moves due to it's natural frailty, unless you can drop me a few calcs which show otherwise. As for leftovers Yanma, I can't see how much use you'd get out of it. One move perhaps? It can't do much damage without a life orb or wall anything imo.

Discussed with Punch and we agreed on:

- Remove Roost from OO
- Keep Tailwind in OO
- Keep Hypnosis in OO (talking about Speed Boost + Hypnosis to cripple a counter)

Removed Roost.
Put Hypnosis back in: Mentioned how it can cripple a counter/switch in, to allow Yanma free reign to deal damage to a wall that it otherwise would struggle to KO, or to allow the option of getting a safe switch in for another Pokemon.
Kept Tailwind as is.

Tagging scorpdestroyer & Punchshroom to check the changes requested.

never used yanma and i kinda think its not good enough for an analyse, but if the other did let you do it then it must be 'ok'. just mention in Overview that Yanma needs A LOT of support to work and qc 1/3 furaiz

Mention some examples of bulky Pokemon that especially hardwall Yanma, particularly Pokemon with large special bulk or dual resistances, such as Rotom, Dragalge, Audino, Klinklang, Mantine, etc.

Choice Scarfers cannot really revenge Yanma since Yanma would likely already be at +1, and +2 after a Protect. Replace that section with status users can cripple Yanma: Toxic and Wisp shortening its lifespan while paralysis utterly ruins Yanma. Mention relevant users.

Sorry if it's been a while, been in hospital unfortunately. Making changes in a bit. Added first QC Check.
